Since the late 1960s Peter Downsbrough has been an important figure in contemporary art, associated with major international art movements as minimal art, conceptual art, and visual poetry. This book provides, for the first time, a profound insight into Downsbrough’s diverse and complex use of photography within his artistic work over the last 40 years. A substantial essay by Alexander Streitberger discusses the artist’s photographic work – which includes single prints, series, postcards, collages, and books – within its aesthetic and historical context. De Goldbergvariaties (1741) van Johann Sebastian Bach (1695-1750) mogen beschouwd worden als het belangrijkste klavierwerk van de 18de eeuw. Zij vormen het hoogtepunt van Bachs oeuvre voor klavecimbel. Bovendien zijn zij het eerste van een reeks ‘encyclopedische’ werken waarmee Bach tijdens het laatste decennium van zijn leven hulde bracht aan de eerbiedwaardige traditie van het contrapunt. In dit monumentale werk realiseert Bach een briljante synthese tussen het constructieve (de ‘ratio’) en het emotionele (het ‘affect’), de twee polen van de West-Europese muziek. De variatiereeks, op basis van de basso ostinato, vertoont een doordachte cyclische opbouw, gekoppeld aan een virtuoze en expressieve stilistische verscheidenheid.

At once a royal secretary, a poet, and a composer, Guillaume de Machaut was one of the most protean and creative figures of the late Middle Ages. Rather than focus on a single strand of his remarkable career, Elizabeth Eva Leach gives us a book that encompasses all aspects of his work, illuminating it in a distinctively interdisciplinary light. The author provides a comprehensive picture of Machaut’s artistry, reviews the documentary evidence about his life, charts the different agendas pursued by modern scholarly disciplines in their rediscovery and use of specific parts of his output, and delineates Machaut’s own poetic and material presentation of his authorial persona. Leach treats Machaut’s central poetic themes of hope, fortune, and death, integrating the aspect of Machaut’s multimedia art that differentiates him from his contemporaries’ treatment of similar thematic issues: music. In restoring the centrality of music in Machaut’s poetics, arguing that his words cannot be truly understood or appreciated without the additional layers of meaning created in their musicalization, Leach makes a compelling argument that musico-literary performance occupied a special place in the courts of fourteenth-century France.

The series Plutarchea Hypomnemata, published by Leuven University Press, focuses on the voluminous oeuvre of Plutarch of Chaeronea, one of the most prolific and multi-faceted authors of the ancient Greek world. Until the 19th century his fame as an author was primarily based on his Parallel Lives but today the miscellaneous collection of his ethical writings is highly appreciated as well. Nearly all of his works illustrate both his intelligent interpretation and appropriation of the Greek tradition, as well as his critical interaction with contemporary society. As a popular school author, his work exerted an immense influence on the education of the Western intelligentsia up to the 19th century. The second half of the 20th century witnessed a renaissance of scholarly research on his works, with the International Plutarch Society acting as a forceful catalyst. The series Plutarchea Hypomnemata intends to further the scholarly study of, and international dialogue on, this rich Corpus Plutarcheum. To that end it welcomes monographs that explore specific themes developed in one or more Plutarchan writings, offer a thorough interpretation of and/or commentary on a particular text, or discuss various aspects of Plutarch’s authorial activity, philosophical thinking, religious ideas, political convictions, and attitude towards history, science, and the arts. We also welcome studies that situate him in broader ideological and literary contexts (such as the so-called ‘Second Sophistic’, ‘Middle Platonism’, ancient biography) and/or in a contemporary political, social, and religious context. Plutarch of Chaeronea, Platonist, polymath, and prolific writer, was by no means an armchair philosopher. He believed in the necessity for a philosopher to affect the lives of his fellow citizens. That urge inspired many of his writings to meet what he considered people’s true needs. Although these writings on practical ethics illustrate in various ways Plutarch’s authorial talents and raise many challenging questions (regarding their overall structure, content, purpose, and underlying philosophical and social presuppositions), they have attracted only limited scholarly attention. Virtues for the People contains a collection of essays that deal with these questions from different perspectives and as such throw a new light upon this multifaceted domain of Plutarch’s thinking and writing. Coping with Social Change Life Strategies of Workers in Poland’s New Capitalism Adam Mrozowicki
The concerns of the people, whose experiences are explored in this book, rarely make it through to the academic discourse and political praxis in Central and Eastern Europe. In the public discourse and in many sociological accounts, manual workers tend to be represented as disoriented victims of post-socialist transformation. But how can such an approach explain the diversity of the actual ways of coping with social change adopted by workers in the new capitalist reality?

To address this question the author turns to workers themselves, to their life strategies and personal experiences. He reconstructs the processes of adapting to and resisting structural changes in working-class milieus in one of the industrial regions of Poland (Silesia). Through this in-depth analysis of 166 personal interviews with blue-collar workers, Mrozowicki reaches general conclusions. The workers rarely resemble the passive puppets of historical forces. Their ability to reflect upon their lives, upon their deeply-ingrained moral ethos, and upon their social circumstances emerge as the foundation of their efforts to overcome socially imposed limitations.

hisclass A Historical Social Class Scheme Marco H.D. van Leeuwen and Ineke Maas
Social class schemes, contemporary as well as historical, always involve something of a mystery. While this book does not claim to have solved that mystery completely, it does shed significant light on it. For the sake of comparability, it is advisable not to develop new class schemes but to use old ones. Yet presenting a new class scheme – hisclass – is exactly what this book does. Unlike existing historical schemes, hisclass is international, created for the purpose of making comparisons across different periods, countries and languages. Furthermore, it is linked to an international standard classification scheme for occupations – hisc0. The chapters in the book show how historical occupational titles classified in hisc0 can form the building blocks of a social class scheme for past populations. The dimensions underlying classes are discussed. How, for instance, can manual work be distinguished from non-manual work? Skilled from non-skilled? And what did ‘supervision’ really mean? A rich source of detailed occupational information is used to measure those dimensions. The result is an instrument that can be used to systematically compare social class positions, distilled from a dazzling variety of occupational titles, around the world and over a range of periods.

Conflicting Words The Peace Treaty of Münster (1648) and the Political Culture of the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Monarchy Laura Manzano Baena
The Peace of Münster, signed between the Catholic Monarchy and the United Provinces in 1648, went against the political culture of both polities. The fact that the Spanish Monarchy definitively accepted the independence of its former subjects clearly negated the policy put forward by the Monarchy during the ‘eighty’ years that the war lasted and to the Monarchy’s declared main goals. For the United Provinces, signing a peace with the archenemy without having brought liberty and religious freedom to ten of the seventeen provinces that formed part of the ancient Burgundian circle was also considered by important groups in the ‘rebel’ provinces as a defection. Portraying the political culture of both the Catholic Monarchy and the United Provinces, this work analyses the views held in both territories concerning the points which were discussed in pamphlets and treatises published during the peace negotiations. It also traces the origin of the arguments presented, showing how they were transformed during the period under study, and discusses their influence, or presence, in the diplomatic negotiations among the ambassadors of the United Provinces and the Catholic Monarchy in the German town of Münster. These discussions are inserted in the wider framework of a Christian realm that had to reassess its own values as a consequence of the confessionalisation process and the Thirty Years’ War, which affected not only the Empire but, in one way or another, all Central and Western Europe.

In Beurzen van België wordt de vroege geschiedenis van het beurswezen in de Belgische gewesten onderzocht. Napoleon vaardigde in 1801 een decreet uit voor de oprichting van beurzen in alle belangrijke handelssteden van het Franse Rijk. Deze beurzen zouden ten dienste staan van de handel in steden zoals Antwerpen, Brugge, Gent, Oostende en Brussel. Leuven, Dendermonde, Mons, Luik en Doornik volgden later. In de allereerste decennia was de hoofdactiviteit op de beurs niet de handel in effecten maar de handel in (gestandaardiseerde) goederen als graan, olie e.a. De zeer dirigistische beurswetgeving uit de Franse tijd werd haast probleemloos overgenomen zowel in 1815 tijdens de Nederlandse periode als na de Belgische onafhankelijkheid in 1830. Een nieuwe Belgische wetgeving zorgde ten slotte in 1867 voor een sterke liberalisering van de beurs. Beurzen van België geeft inzicht in de oorsprong van heel wat beursmechanismen zoals die decennialang (en soms zelfs tot vandaag) hebben voortbestaan. Het boek is van belang voor economische historici omdat het voor het eerst in detail blootlegt welk belang de beurs als onderdeel van de kapitaalmarkt had. Voor economen biedt het de achtergrond om langetermijnreeksen met betrekking tot het beurswezen te verstaan. Beurzen van België is het eerste boek dat op basis van archieven en cijferreeksen deze institutie onderzoekt.

Un pèlerinage psycho-pédagogique aux États-Unis. Édition annotée et commentée du carnet de voyage (1922) de Raymond Buyse Marc Depaepe & Lieven D’hulst (eds)
En 1922, Raymond Buyse, un jeune « pédologue » belge, entreprend, en compagnie du fameux docteur Ovide Decroly, un voyage d’études aux États-Unis d’Amérique. Les deux s’intéressent à l’étude « scientifique » de l’enfant et surtout à la psychologie appliquée américaine. Ils rencontrent des professeurs américains connus et visitent les universités qui développent ces aspects de la psychopédagogie. De retour en Belgique, ils consacrent plusieurs ouvrages et articles aux questions abordées au cours du voyage. On sait moins que Buyse tient, pendant le voyage, une sorte de journal, demeuré inédit jusqu’à ce jour. Dans un style alerte, Buyse livre les réflexions d’un voyageur curieux: pas seulement des impressions interculturelles et d’informations anecdotiques, mais également de fines observations suscitées par ses rencontres avec les « grands » psychologues et pédagogues de l’époque. C’est pourquoi cette édition ajoute une dimension nouvelle à l’étude de l’histoire des sciences psychopédagogiques en Belgique et bien au-delà. In 1922, Raymond Buyse, a young Belgian ‘pedologist’, undertook, together with the famous Dr. Ovide Decroly, a study tour of the United States of America. Both were interested in the ‘scientific’ study of the child and especially in applied American psychology. They met well-known American professors and visited universities that were developing these aspects of educational psychology. Back in Belgium, they dedicated several books and articles to the issues discussed during the trip. Less known is that Raymond Buyse noted his impressions and reflections of the trip in a diary. Buyse writes in a lively style about his encounters with the ‘great’ psychologists and pedagogues of that time and in doing so this – until now unpublished – diary adds a new dimension to the study of the history of educational psychology in Belgium and far beyond. marc depaepe teaches History of Education, Pedagogy and Psychology at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
