Op elk moment treden nieuwe academici in het spoor van hun leermeesters, maakt men gebruik van nieuwe methoden en ontwikkelt men nieuwe interesses. Niet alleen de aard van de navorsers en van hun methoden evolueren, ook hun onderzoeksobject verandert. Zeker in het veld van de politiek en de wereldeconomie maken we revolutionaire tijden door. De geo-politiek van de VS en Europa ten opzichte van groeilanden zoals China, India en Brazilië wijzigt drastisch en in de Arabische landen groeit het verlangen naar echte democratie. Intussen neemt de druk op de draagkracht van onze blauwe planeet verder toe. In 2050 zijn we wellicht met 9 miljard mensen. Zal er voldoende voedsel zijn? Welke energie zal aan onze toekomstige behoeften op een duurzame manier kunnen voldoen? In welk soort voertuigen zullen we ons verplaatsen? In onze eigen gemeenschap doet de vergrijzing vragen stellen over de houdbaarheid van ons pensioenstelsel en over de kwaliteit van het leven van een steeds ouder wordende bevolking. Wie een vinger aan de pols wil houden van de ontwikkeling van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek zal in deze publicatie opnieuw een staalkaart vinden van wat voor vandaag en voor morgen relevant is.

een origineel portret van het museumbezoek in het negentiende-eeuwse belgië
Over the last decade the technique of X-ray fluorescence has evolved, from dependence on laboratory-based standalone units to field use of portable and lightweight handheld devices. These portable instruments have given researchers in art conservation and archaeology the opportunity to study a broad range of materials with greater accessibility and flexibility than ever before. In addition, the low relative cost of handheld xrf has led many museums, academic institutions, and cultural centres to invest in the devices for routine materials analysis purposes. Although these instruments often greatly simplify data collection, proper selection of analysis conditions and interpretation of the data still require an understanding of the principles of x-ray spectroscopy. These instruments are often marketed and used as ‘point and shoot’ solutions; however, their inexpert use can easily generate deceptive or erroneous results. This volume focuses specifically on the applications, possibilities, and limitations of handheld xrf in art conservation and archaeology. The papers deal with experimental methodologies, protocols, and possibilities of handheld xrf analysis in dealing with the complexity of materials encountered in this research.

Begin van de negentiende eeuw openden ze hun deuren voor het publiek en kon het museumbezoek zich als nieuwe culturele activiteit ontplooien. Steunend op uitvoerig archiefonderzoek en rijkelijk geïllustreerd met fraai beeldmateriaal biedt De intrede van het publiek een brede geschiedenis van het museumbezoek in België in de periode vanaf de onafhankelijkheid tot het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Liesbet Nys schetst de snelle expansie van het museumwezen, analyseert de ideeën die leefden over het museumbezoek, beschrijft hoe het museumbezoek concreet verliep, tracht het toenmalige museumpubliek een gezicht te geven en staat ook stil bij hoe dat publiek zijn bezoek aan de Belgische musea heeft beleefd. Op die manier krijgt de lezer een origineel portret van het negentiende-eeuwse Belgische museumlandschap.

De decennia 1960-70 vormen een scharniermoment in de geschiedenis van het wonen in Vlaanderen. De toename van de welvaart en de democratisering van het autobezit lagen aan de basis van een suburbanisatiegolf. Tegelijkertijd brachten deze evoluties nieuwe vraagstukken met zich mee. Een douche, auto of televisie kwamen binnen het handbereik van de brede middenklasse, maar hoe ging zij best om met die nieuwe technologieën en waar gaf men deze technologieën een plaats in het huis? Koos je voor traditioneel of modern? In Hoe zouden we graag wonen? belicht Els De Vos de rol van socio-culturele middenveldorganisaties die hun leden begeleidden bij het bouwen, inrichten en bewonen van hun huis. Enerzijds fungeerden ze als doorgeefluik tussen architecten, de overheid en bewoners, maar tevens drukten ze als zelfstandige partijen hun ideologische stempel op het wonen. Met de ontzuiling van de samenleving, de commercialisering van het wonen en de groeiende mondigheid van de burger kwam hun opvoedkundige taak echter algauw in het gedrang. Op basis van rijk iconografisch, archivalisch en empirisch materiaal reconstrueert de auteur de geschiedenis van het wonen in Vlaanderen als een dynamisch proces tussen diverse actoren.

In the changing world of interwar Europe a longing for stability rose to the surface of social life. Newly developed neighbourhoods and buildings were designed to create the healing community that many people were dreaming of. Various social groups with nationalist, ideological, or religious agendas made this concept of community a cornerstone in their framework and appropriated it to prescribe the relations between architecture and modernity. Making a New World analyses the various ways in which these relations were determined. Most activists/entities encountered the potentialities of modernity, such as technology or mass media, in an accommodating way. In a broad spectrum of actions and proposals – from art exhibitions to séances, photo reports to roof tiles, landscapes to sanitation – these reformists were hoping to create a universe in which their communal dream could become a reality. The 17 contributions to this richly illustrated volume draw the contours of this new world by analysing its foundations and working mechanisms at its heart.

The notion of the minor, developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Kafka, Towards a minor literature (1975), is introduced and connected applied here for the very first time to the field of photography theory. Deleuze and Guattari defined minor literature in terms of deterritorialization, politicization and collectivization. By transferring ‘the minor’ to the medium of photography, this book enlarges the idea of ‘the minor’ and opens it up to all kinds of mutations in the process. The essays gathered in this book discuss the ways in which photography can make the dominant codes of representation stammer and how it can produce new affects and address people yet to come. The authors consider ‘the minor’ as a valuable tool to help photography research move beyond, or in between, binary and hierarchized ways of thinking (of high and low art, for example, or centre and periphery). As such, it aims to contribute to a rethinking of photography as multiplicity and variation. Consequently, the term is connected with both marginal and canonical photographic practices, covering photographers as different as Miroslav Tichy, Paul McCarthy, Tacita Dean, Dan Graham, and Paul Nougé. After developing a theory of the minor, this book explores how the operations of the minor can be found in major art practices. It closes by tackling the question of photography as variation in case studies of belated forms of surrealist photography.

The different psychopathologic syndromes show in an exaggerated and caricatural manner the basic structures of human existence. These structures not only characterize psychopathology, but they also determine the highest forms of culture. This is the credo of Freud’s anthropology. This anthropology implies that humans are beings of the in-between. The human being is essentially tied up between pathology and culture, and there is no ‘normal position’ that can be defined in a theoretically convincing manner. The authors of this book call this Freudian anthropology a patho-analysis of existence or a clinical anthropology. This anthropology gives a new meaning to the Nietzschean dictum that the human being is a ‘sick animal’. Freud, and later Lacan, first developed this anthropological insight in relation to hysteria (in its relation to literature). This patho-analytic perspective progressively disappears in Freud’s texts after 1905. This book reveals the crucial moments of that development. In doing so, it becomes clear not only that Freud introduced the Oedipus complex much later than is usually assumed, but also that the theory of the Oedipus complex is irreconcilable with the project of a clinical anthropology. The authors not only examine the philosophical meaning of this thesis in the work of Freud. They also examine its avatars in the texts of Jacques Lacan and show how this project of a patho-analysis of existence inevitably obliges us to formulate a non-oedipal psychoanalytic anthropology.

However, this ‘thesis’ has triggered some vehement debates, given that men have continued to dominate the churches, and the churches themselves have reacted to the association of religion and femininity, often formulated by their critics, by explicitly focusing their appeal to men. In this book the authors critically reflect upon the use of concepts like feminization and masculinization in relation to Christianity. By presenting case studies that adopt different gendered approaches with regard to Christian, mainly Catholic discourses and practices, the authors capture multiple ‘feminizations’ and ‘masculinizations’ in Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, it becomes clear that the idea that Christianity took on ‘charicteristically feminine’ values and practices cannot withstand the conclusion that what is considered ‘manly’ or ‘feminine’ depends on time, place, and context, and on the reasons why gendered metaphors are used. patrick pasture is associate professor in history at the University of Leuven, where he co-ordinates the research unit Modernity & Society 1800–2000 (MoSa). Although contemporary migration in and from Africa can be understood as a continuation of earlier forms of interregional and international migration, current processes of migration seem to have taken on a new quality. This volume argues that one of the main reasons for this is the fact that local worlds are increasingly measured against a set of possibilities whose referents are global, not local. Due to this globalization of the personal and societal horizons of possibilities in Africa and elsewhere, in many contexts migration gains an almost inevitable attraction while, at the same time, actual migration becomes increasingly restricted. Based on detailed ethnographic accounts, the contributors to this volume focus on the imaginations, expectations, and motivations that propel the pursuit of migration. Decentring the focus of much of migration studies on the ‘receiving societies’, the volume foregrounds the subjective aspect of migration and explores the impact which the imagination and practice of migration have on the sociocultural conditions of the various local settings concerned. knut graw is lecturer at the University of Leuven and associated researcher at Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin. His current research focuses on ritual praxis and migration in Senegal, Gambia, and Spain.

The Rationes super Praedicamenta Aristotelis of John Pagus is one of the earliest known literary products of the Arts Faculty of the University of Paris. Written in the 1230s, it is among the first extant commentaries on Aristotle’s Categories and reflects a period in which philosophers had already absorbed the full range of Aristotle's logical writings and were becoming increasingly familiar with his physical and metaphysical works. The present volume contains the first full critical edition of the text, preceded by an extensive introductory study consisting of two parts. The first part describes the life and work of John Pagus, the manuscript sources, formal features, authoritative sources, and date of his commentary, as well as its relationship to other known commentaries from the period. The second part is devoted to an analysis of some of the key features of Pagus’ interpretation of the categories. The author takes account of Pagus’ systematic construal of Aristotle’s text, focusing particular attention on his position on perennial issues such as what categories are, which categories there are, what sort of items they collect, whether or not they can overlap, and the relationship between logical and metaphysical categories. To more appreciate and understand Pagus’ approach, the volume also pays considerable attention to the views of his near-contemporaries Nicholas of Paris and Robert Kilwardby.

Historians have deliberated ever since over the role that Nicias, and especially his character and behaviour, played in this catastrophe. Five centuries later, Plutarch of Chaeronea, the author of moral essays and a series of twinned biographies known collectively as The Parallel Lives, entered this debate with his Life of Nicias. Drawing not only from historical sources like Thucydides but also from the works of philosophers, lyric poets, tragedians, comic playwrights, and many others, some of which writings are now lost, Plutarch wove a rich tapestry from the data available to him about Nicias’ career and times and created a new vision of the doomed general’s life-story. Their importance, and the importance of Latin as a literary language, is beginning to be recognized by scholars. Researchers from the universities of Glasgow and St. Andrews have now prepared the first-ever bibliography of Scottish Latin in print – unique both in its focus on the many works written in Latin and in the way in which Scottish writers are specifically targeted. Covering the years c. 1480-1700, this new reference tool carefully catalogues the work of some 500 writers, in both prose and verse. Thousands of works are named in a clear and original format, with their titles not so truncated as to be obscure (as sometimes happens in English ‘short-title’ catalogues). The editors take advantage of recent research, and many poetic works hitherto unknown or ignored are referenced. This ground-breaking reference work will be essential not only for those who study the progress of humanism and the history and literature of early modern Scotland, but also for those engaged in various kinds of research into the events and ideas of continental Europe, with which Scotland was closely linked in many ways.
