Vernieuwende bijdrage in het onderzoeksgebied New Rural History Meer dan boer alleen vertelt het verrassende verhaal van de Landelijke Gilden. Deze sociaal-culturele vormingsbeweging voor plattelandsbewoners ontstond na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in de schoot van de Boerenbond. Met de openstelling voor het brede plattelandspubliek reageerde deze klassieke landbouworganisatie succesvol op het sterk veranderende naoorlogse platteland in Vlaanderen. Chantal Bisschop schetst op een verfrissende manier de geschiedenis van de Landelijke Gilden en levert zo een belangrijke bijdrage op het vlak van New Rural History. Vernieuwend is onder meer de aandacht voor rurale bewegingen, het reflexieve gebruik van interviews en de focus op de beleving en betekenisgeving van zowel leden, personeelsleden als bestuurders. karel dobbelaere is Emeritus Professor of Sociology of the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven. alfonso pérez-agote is Professor of Sociology at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. Research by GERICR (Groupe européen de recherche interdisciplinaire sur le changement religieux), a European interdisciplinary research group studying religious changes coordinated by Alfonso Pérez-Agote.

The waning influence of the Catholic church in the ethical and political debate For centuries the Catholic Church was able to impose her ethical rules in matters related to the intimate, that is, questions concerning life (from its beginning until its end) and the family, in the so-called Catholic countries in Western Europe. When the polity started to introduce legislation in opposition to the Catholic ethic, the ecclesiastical authorities and part of the population reacted. The media reported manifestations in France against same-sex marriages and in Spain against the de-penalization of abortion. In Italy the Episcopal conference entered the political field in opposition to medically assisted procreation. In Portugal the Church made a ‘pact’ so that the law on same-sex marriages did not include the possibility of adoption. And in Belgium the Episcopal conference expressed its opposition to such laws with religious, legal and anthropological arguments, which all other Episcopal conferences did also. In this book, the authors analyse the full spectrum of the issue, including the emergence of such laws; the political discussions; the standpoints defended in the media by professionals, ethicists, and politicians; the votes in the parliaments; the political interventions of the Episcopal conferences; and the attitude of professionals. Science as an instrument to justify religious missions in secular society The relationship between religion and science is complex and continues to be a topical issue. However, it is seldom zoomed in on from both Protestant and Catholic perspectives. By doing so the contributing authors in this collection gain new insights into the origin and development of missiology. Missiology is described in this book as a ‘project of modernity,’ a contemporary form of apologetics. ‘Scientific apologetics’ was the way to justify missions in a society that was rapidly becoming secularized. Mission & Science deals with the interaction between new scientific disciplines (his toriography, geography, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics) and new scientific insights (Darwin’s evolutionary theory, heliocentrism), as well as the role of the papacy and what inspired missionary practice (first in China and the Far East and later in Africa). The renewed missiology has in turn influenced the missionary practice of the twentieth century, guided by apostolic policy. Some ‘missionary scholars’ have even had a significant influence on the scientific discourse of their time.

This edited volume brings together many of the world’s leading theorists of multinational justice in order to analyse two of the most frequent areas of debate and dispute in multinational federations: recognition and redistribution. The authors address questions such as the following: What are the most appropriate forms of institutional recognition for sub-state national groups? How is the concept of redistributive justice affected by the presence of federal institutions and autonomous sub-state nationalities? Named after a ground-breaking figure in the Belgian photography industry, the Lieven Gevaert Series is a peer reviewed series of innovative books on photography. Launched in 2004, the Lieven Gevaert Series takes into account the ubiquitous presence of photography within modern culture and, in particular, the visual arts. Images Performing History Photography and Representations of the Past in European Art after 1989 Katarzyna Ruchel-Stockmans

The role of photographic media in making and remaking history History is increasingly made in images, not only because its records are largely photographic but also because our ideas about the past are formed in visual terms. This book offers a discussion of contemporary art practices which question the received notions of historical representations after the pivotal changes of 1989 in Europe. These art practices reveal, in different ways, the operative role of the photographic media in making and remaking history. Not limited to a particular artistic medium, they demonstrate how history is forged through enacting or re-enacting its past forms, while, on the other hand, they indicate how copying and quoting can contribute to creating a new, operative aesthetics. By foregrounding a performative character of images, art is shown to construct an alternative knowledge of the past.

Innovative exploration of the embodied cognition thesis in film studies The embodied cognition thesis claims that cognitive functions cannot be understood without making reference to the interactions between the brain, the body, and the environment. The meaning of abstract concepts is grounded in concrete experiences. This book is the first edited volume to explore the impact of the embodied cognition thesis on the scientific study of film. A team of scholars analyse the main aspects of film (narrative, style, music, sound, time, the viewer, emotion, perception, ethics, the frame, etc.) from an embodied perspective. Remembered Reading Memory, Comics and Post-War Constructions of British Girlhood Mel Gibson

mel gibson is a Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies at Northumbria University.

A reader’s history exploring the forgotten genre of girls’ comics Girls’ comics were a major genre from the 1950s onwards in Britain. The most popular titles sold between 800,000 and a million copies a week. However, this genre was slowly replaced by magazines which now dominate publishing for girls. Remembered Reading is a readers’ history which explores the genre, and memories of those comics, looking at how and why this rich history has been forgotten. The research is based around both analysis of what the titles contained and interviews with women about their childhood comic reading. In addition, it also looks at the other comic books that British girls engaged with, including humour comics and superhero titles. In doing so it looks at intersections of class, girlhood, and genre, and puts comic reading into historical, cultural, and educational context. Joannes Burmeister Aulularia and Other Inversions of Plautus Edited, translated, and introduced by Michael Fontaine

First critical edition of Burmeister’s the newly discovered Aulularia Joannes Burmeister of Lüneburg (1576–1638) was among the greatest NeoLatin poets of the German Baroque. His masterpieces, now mostly lost, are Christian ‘inversions’ of the classical Roman comedies of Plautus. With only minimal changes in language and none in meter, each transforms Plautus’ pagan plays into comedies based on biblical themes. Fascinating in their own right, they also bring back to attention forgotten genres of Renaissance literature. This volume offers the first critical edition of the newly discovered Aulularia (1629), which exists in a sole copy, and the fragments of Mater-Virgo (1621), which adapts Plautus’ Amphitryo to show the Nativity of Jesus. The introduction offers reconstructions of Susanna (based on Casina) and Asinaria (1625), his two lost or unpublished inversions of Plautus. Fontaine also provides the only biography of Burmeister based on archival sources, along with discussions of his inimitable Latinity and the perilous context of war and witch burning in which Burmeister wrote. Burmeister’s inversions bear witness to the special talent of his age for the creative reworking of classical literature, such as Monteverdi’s Poppea or Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, as well as to his tumultuous times, with his views on military abuses in the Thirty Years War prefiguring those of Grimmelshausen’s Simplicius Simplicissimus.

First critical edition of Petrus Thomae’s theory of non-causal dependence This work of Scotist metaphysics is an investigation into the ultimate constitution of things. In the course of this treatise, Petrus Thomae examines whether the essences of things ultimately depend on being thought of by God for their very intelligibility or whether they have it of themselves. Defending in detail the second option, Peter argues that creatures exist independently of the divine intellect in the divine essence. They enjoy real, eternal being in the divine essence and objective being in the divine mind. Aware that these views conflicted with his belief in the Christian doctrine of creation, Peter laboured to alleviate the conflict with a theory of non-causal dependence, according to which even if God did not cause creatures to be in the divine essence, nevertheless they are necessary correlatives of the divine essence.

Reflecties over een onderzoeksorgaan voor veiligheid in België In Nederland werd door de Rijkswet van 2 december 2004 de Onderzoeks raad voor Veiligheid opgericht. Deze raad stelt onderzoeken in naar rampen, ongevallen en incidenten en formuleert adviezen aan de betrokken actoren om de veiligheid te versterken. De gasexplosie in Gellingen, de treinramp in Buizingen en de trein- en giframp in Wetteren zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden van ernstige voorvallen die zich de afgelopen jaren in België hebben voorgedaan. Gedurende de periode 2010-2011 heeft het Leuvens Instituut voor Criminologie (LINC), in opdracht van de Algemene Directie Veiligheid en Preventie (FOD Binnenlandse Zaken) en in samenwerking met het Crisiscentrum, onderzocht of de beleidsmatige reactie ten aanzien van zulke voorvallen adequaat is en of de oprichting van een onafhankelijk onderzoeksorgaan ook zinvol zou zijn in de Belgische context.
