Large quantities of oil were discovered in the Albertine Rift Valley in Western Uganda in 2006. The sound management of these oil resources and revenues is undoubtedly one of the key public policy challenges for Uganda as it is for other African countries with large oil and/or gas endowments. With oil expected to start flowing in 2021, the current book analyses how this East African country is preparing for the challenge of effectively, efficiently, and transparently managing its oil sector and resources. Adopting a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and comparative approach, the book identifies a broad scope of issues that need to be addressed in order for Uganda to realise the full potential of its oil wealth for national economic transformation. Predominantly grounded in local scholarship and including chapters drawing on the experiences of Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, the book blazes a trail on governance of African oil in an era of emerging producers. Oil Wealth and Development in Uganda and Beyond will be of great interest to social scientists and economic and social policy makers in oil producing countries. Funding, efficiency, and equity in education In OECD countries the average expenditure on primary and secondary education institutions is about 3.5% of GDP. The investment in education has large implications for economic development and the proper functioning of democratic institutions, as well as overall well-being. However, clear consensus and guidance on which system leads to the best educational outcomes is lacking. This volume describes the resource allocation for compulsory and special needs education for a selection of well-performing countries and regions on PISA tests. Aberrant Nuptials explores the diversity and richness of the interactions between artistic research and Deleuze studies. ‘Aberrant nuptials’ is the expression Gilles Deleuze uses to refer to productive encounters between systems characterised by fundamental difference. More than imitation, representation, or reproduction, these encounters foster creative flows of energy, generating new material configurations and intensive experiences. Within different understandings of artistic research, the contributors to this book – architects, composers, film-makers, painters, performers, philosophers, sculptors, and writers – map current practices at the intersection between music, art, and philosophy, contributing to an expansion of horizons and methodologies. Translation, Interpreting and Transfer takes as its basis an inclusive view of translation and translation studies. It covers research and scholarly reflection, theoretical and methodological, on all aspects of the core activities translation and interpreting, but also similar rewriting and recontextualisation practices such as adaptation, localisation, transcreation and transediting, keeping Roman Jakobson’s inclusive view on interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation in mind. The title of the series, which includes the more encompassing concept of transfer, reflects this broad conceptualisation of translation matters. Through its Research Summer School and other activities, CETRA (Centre for Translation Studies) has a reputation in supporting young researchers unfold their potential and in fostering excellence. Most of this translation is done not by translators, but by journalists with practically no training in translation. What happens when norms of journalism and those of translation clash? In this book, the author, a trained conference interpreter and former international journalist, takes the example of news translation in Japan and analyses translation choices. Her extensive analysis of texts from six major Japanese newspapers and interviews with Japanese ‘journalators’ focuses on direct quotations, where accuracy is a top journalistic priority but can generate loss of communication impact if implemented rigidly. She argues that many shifts from accuracy can be explained by risk management strategies. When News Travels East provides invaluable insight from an insider about news translation in Japan and beyond and paves the way for further research in the field.

Alles verandert altijd is een onmisbaar instrument voor de literair vertaler in opleiding en de beginnende en gevorderde professional bij het vertalen in en uit het Nederlands. Voor het eerst worden hier alle belangrijke aspecten van het literair vertalen helder en bevattelijk samengebracht: de zakelijke en financiële aspecten, de basiskennis en vaardigheden die deze activiteit veronderstelt, de algemene kernbegrippen en uitdagingen, het vertalen van de traditionele literaire genres, maar ook van kinder- en jeugdliteratuur, literaire non-fictie en filosofie, en de ‘nazorg’ in de vorm van revisie, marketing en promotie. Het boek is een initiatief van het Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen (ELV), en bevat bijdragen van 23 vertaalexperts (wetenschappers, opleiders en vertalers), onder eindredactie van Lieven D’hulst en Chris Van de Poel. Beiden zijn lid van het wetenschappelijk comité van het ELV, een partnerschap van de Taalunie, de KU Leuven en de Universiteit Utrecht, in samenwerking met het Nederlands Letterenfonds en het Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren. Lieven D’hulst is gewoon hoogleraar Franstalige letterkunde en vertaalwetenschap aan de Letterenfaculteit van de KU Leuven. Chris Van de Poel is coördinator van de opleiding literair vertalen aan de Letterenfaculteit van de KU Leuven, campus Antwerpen.

Kwantitatieve methoden zijn fundamenteel voor het historisch denken en een onmisbaar onderdeel van het métier van de historicus. Vervolgens komt de lezer meer te weten over de opleiding tot industrieel ingenieur. Leuven Studies in Mission and Modernity is a peer-reviewed book series which aims to showcase groundbreaking works on the history of missionaries and missionary organisations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The series will steer mission history towards new thematic frontiers by exploring the multiple ways in which missionary operations have affected local societies and cultures around the globe, and how their significance is negotiated in the present. Leuven Studies in Mission and Modernity provides a forum for original contributions to the study of religious missions and how they have been embedded in broader processes of colonisation/ decolonisation, globalisation, secularisation, and humanitarianism from the nineteenth century onwards. MiMoRA Leuven Studies in Mission and Modernity is an initiative by the Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA). Created in 2018 by several partners within KU Leuven, MiMoRA aims to reinvigorate international research on missionaries by providing a forum for academic debate and by creating new research networks and publication possibilities for young and promising scholars across the globe. MiMoRA is coordinated by KADOC-KU Leuven, the interfaculty Documentation and Research Centre on Religion, Culture and Society associated with KU Leuven and supported by the Flemish Community. All books are published in English for an international audience of scholars. All manuscripts are subject to peer review. The series welcomes contributions by established scholars as well as by promising young researchers, and embraces diversity in terms of gender, nationality, and ethnicity.
