Wetenschap als roeping Een geschiedenis van de Leuvense faculteit voor wetenschappen Geert Vanpae mel

Horen de natuurwetenschappen thuis aan een universiteit? Van bij haar oprichting in 1817 heeft de Leuvense faculteit voor wetenschappen moeten strijden om haar bestaan te rechtvaardigen. Daarbij moest ze steeds opnieuw het juiste evenwicht vinden tussen katholieke propaganda, maatschappelijk nut en zuivere wetenschap. Pas op het einde van de negentiende eeuw slaagde ze erin het roer in eigen handen te nemen. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek werd voortaan de norm.

Sindsdien staat de faculteit vooraan in de verwetenschappelijking van de universiteit. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van de Leuvense faculteit voor wetenschappen en haar steeds wisselende relatie tot universiteit en maatschappij.

Academisch onderzoek heeft vaak een utopisch karakter. Wetenschappers trachten de grenzen van het kenbare te verleggen en op die manier een nieuwe, betere wereld mogelijk te maken. In het jaar waarin de vijfhonderdste verjaardag van Thomas Mores Utopia werd gevierd, stonden de Lessen voor de 21ste eeuw in het teken van de utopie. De auteurs schetsen de intellectuele en culturele context waarin Mores baanbrekend boek kon ontstaan en staan ook stil bij niet-westerse utopieën. Verschillende bijdragen exploreren de utopische dimensies van recente ontwikkelingen in de gezondheidszorg, digitalisering en voedingsindustrie. Ook de Europese democratie, de publieke rol van wetenschap en de organisatie van het onderwijs in Congo worden tegen het licht gehouden. In de openingstekst betoogt minister en jurist Koen Geens dat de moderne rechtstaat geen utopie mag zijn, maar noodzaak is.

Bart Pattyn is hoogleraar aan het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte en directeur van het Overlegcentrum voor Ethiek van de KU Leuven. Hij is medeverantwoordelijk voor de ‘Lessen voor de eenentwintigste eeuw’.

Enkele maanden vóór zijn overlijden in 1750 voltooide Johan Sebastian Bach zijn muzikaal testament: de h-Moll-Messe. Hij creëerde hiermee een bewonderenswaardige synthese van de hele geschiedenis van de mis, het genre dat ook toen nog gold als dé toetssteen voor compositorisch vernuft en scherpzinnige tekstinterpretatie. Middeleeuwen, renaissance en barok versmelten in Bachs ultieme meesterwerk tot wellicht de meest universele compositie uit het West-Europese repertoire.

Op basis van het recentste onderzoek schetst Ignace Bossuyt de fascinerende ontstaansgeschiedenis van de h-Moll-Messe binnen het historische, muzikale en religieuze kader van Bachs tijd. Hij bespreekt in detail de vijf delen van de mis (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus en Agnus Dei), fragment per fragment, met aandacht voor zowel de puur muzikale aspecten als de theologische en symbolische duiding van de mistekst.

In een apart hoofdstuk gaat hij dieper in op het gebruik van de parodie of de herwerking van vroeger gecomponeerde muziek, een van de basistechnieken die Bach ook hier toepaste. Ten slotte komen we ook te weten hoe de mis onthaald werd vanaf Bachs sterfjaar tot op heden.

Ignace Bossuyt is emeritus gewoon hoogleraar van de onderzoekseenheid Musicologie van de KU Leuven.

In 1898 breekt in Gent een theatercrisis uit. Het officiële Grand Théâtre loopt leeg terwijl de café-concerten en variététheaters als paddenstoelen uit de grond schieten. Zij weten met hun ‘variétés’ heel wat toeschouwers te bekoren.

Aan de hand van onuitgegeven archiefmateriaal over de programmatie, de speelstijl, de technologie, de architectuur en de houding van de toeschouwer in de Gentse provinciestad tussen 1880 en 1914 analyseert de auteur de toenmalige kijkervaring en vergelijkt zij het populaire vermaak met het officiële theater. Waarom werd de ‘aandachtige’ houding in het officiële theater als ‘gezond’ beschouwd en de ‘verstrooiing’ van de café-concerten en variététheaters als ‘ziekmakend’? En wat vertelt deze zogenaamde ‘problematiek van de aandacht’ over een provinciestad als Gent in het fin-de-siècle?

In dit bekroonde werk belicht Evelien Jonckheere de unieke geschiedenis van het Gentse variététheater in de negentiende eeuw. Nooit voorheen verscheen in België een wetenschappelijke publicatie integraal over deze historische amusementsvorm.

Evelien Jonckheere promoveerde in 2014 aan de vakgroep Kunstwetenschappen van de UGent. Haar proefschrift, waarop deze publicatie is gebaseerd, werd in 2015 bekroond met de Cultuurprijs voor kunstgeschiedenis en archeologie van de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen.

Dutch literature is increasingly understood as a network of texts and poetics connected to other languages and literatures through translations and adaptations. In this book, a team of international researchers explores how Dutch literary texts cross linguistic, historical, geophysical, political, religious, and disciplinary borders, and reflects on a wide range of methods for studying these myriad border crossings. As a result, this volume provides insight into the international dissemination of Dutch literature and the position of a smaller, less-translated language within the field of world literature.

The title Doing Double Dutch evokes a popular rope-skipping game in which two people turn two long jump ropes in opposite directions while a third person jumps them. A fitting metaphor for how literature circulates internationally: two dynamic spheres, the source culture and the target culture, engage one another in a complex pattern of movement resulting in a new literary work, translation, or adaptation formed somewhere in the middle.

Elke Brems is associate professor at the Arts Faculty of KU Leuven, where she heads the Research Unit of Translation Studies.

Ton van Kalmthout is senior researcher in literary history at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Orsolya Réthelyi is associate professor of Dutch literature at the Eötvös Loránd University Budapest and researcher in literary history at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands.

The ‘Düsseldorf School’ has become a household name in the art world for one of the most successful and influential strains of modern photography.

Coined in the late 1980s, the name refers mainly to the pioneer group of students of the late Bernd Becher, who in 1976 became the first professor for creative photography at a German arts academy. His students included Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Struth, all of them today internationally acclaimed artists in their own right.

Whereas ‘Düsseldorf School’ initially was used as a handy term for a group of artists with the same university’s background, it quickly turned into a powerful brand name both in critical and commercial contexts.

Despite its welcomed impact on the art scene, the members of the ‘School’ felt rather ambiguous about their perception as a group which turned them into stars but simultaneously risked levelling individual profiles and differences. What exactly connects and distinguishes them aesthetically is for the first time thoroughly explored in Maren Polte’s pioneering study.

In commemoration of the destruction of the University Library of Leuven (Belgium) in August 1914, the projection work Parzival, created by Victor Burgin (°UK, 1941) in 2013, was installed within the rebuilt Library. The installation uniquely marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, which left its profound traces on both the consciousness and physiognomy of the city of Leuven. Parzival is a montage piece combining digital images of ruins and bombed out cities with audio-visual and literary material that references, amongst other works, Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal (premiere in 1882), Roberto Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero (1948) and Milan Kundera’s novel Identity (1998).

This publication provides an in-depth analysis of Parzival, a work that is inspired by the period of seven months that Wagner spent in Venice (1858–1859). Burgin’s Parzival raises questions about some of the most fundamental elements in Wagner’s operatic work: the longing for a savior, the complex connection between violence and catharsis, and the presentiment that destruction awaits humanity in the future (Götterdämmerung). In an associative manner, Parzival brings together various artistic and political features to confront the romantic ideal of the ruin with the horrors that might result from such a myth.

In addition, this book contains a reprint of Michel Foucault’s essay “The Imagination of the Nineteenth Century” (1980).

Stéphane Symons is an associate professor in aesthetics and philosophy of culture at the Institute of Philosophy at the KU Leuven.

Hilde Van Gelder is professor of modern and contemporary art history at the KU Leuven and co-director of the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography, Art and Visual Culture.

The shift from Lower to Middle Palaeolithic in northwestern Europe (dated to around 300,000–250,000 years ago) remains poorly understood and underexplored compared to more recent archaeological transitions.

During this period, stone tool technologies underwent significant changes but the limited number of known sites and the general low spatio-temporal resolution of the archaeological record in many cases has impeded detailed behavioural inferences.

Brickyard-quarrying activities at Kesselt-Op de Schans (Limburg, Belgium) led to the discovery and excavation of a well-preserved early Middle Palaeolithic level buried beneath a 10 m thick loess-palaeosol sequence. The present volume offers a comprehensive report on the site, dated to around 280,000 years ago, set against a wider northwestern European context. An in-depth study of the lithic assemblage, including an extensive refitting analysis, provides detailed information on the technological behaviour of prehistoric hominins in the Meuse basin during this crucial time period.

Ann Van Baelen obtained her PhD at KU Leuven in 2014 and currently holds a postdoc at the University of Cambridge. She is specialised in Middle Palaeolithic and Middle Stone Age archaeology.

Around 1800 anatomy as a discipline rose to scientific prominence as it undergirded the Paris-centred clinical revolution in medicine. Although classical anatomy gradually lost ground in the following centuries in favor of new disciplines based on microscopic analysis, general anatomy nevertheless remained pivotal in the teaching of medicine. Corpses, anatomical preparations, models, and drawings were used more intensively than ever before. Moreover, anatomy received new forms of public visibility.

Through public exhibitions and lectures in museums and fairgrounds, anatomy became part of general education and secured a place in popular imagination. As such, the anatomical body developed into a production site for racial, gender, and class identities. Both within the medical and the public sphere, art and science continued to be closely intertwined in anatomical representations of the body.

Bodies Beyond Borders analyzes the notion of circulation in anatomy.

Following anatomy through different locations and cultural domains permits a deeper understanding of its history and its changing place in society. The essays in this collection focus on a wide variety of circulating ideas and objects, ranging from models and body parts to illustrations and texts. Together, the essays enable rethinking the relations between metropolis and colony, university and fairground, and scientific and artistic representations of the human body.

Kaat Wils is professor in European cultural history and head of the research group Cultural History since 1750 at KU Leuven.

Raf De Bont is lecturer at the History Department of Maastricht University.

Sokhieng Au is programme staff in the Analysis and Advocacy unit of Médecins Sans Frontières and a research fellow in history at KU Leuven.

Religion and science on paranormal events

Described as ‘the hand of God’, as ‘pathological’ or even as ‘a clever trick’, exceptional corporeal phenomena such as miraculous cures, stigmata, and incorrupt corpses have triggered heated debates in the past.

Depending on their definition as either ‘supernatural’, ‘psycho-somatic’ or ‘fraudulent’, different authorities have sought to explain these enigmatic occurrences by stimulating inquiries and claiming jurisdiction over them.

As a consequence, separate ecclesiastic and medical forms of expertise emerged on these issues in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This incommensurability has since echoed in historical analyses of paranormal events. In this book the emphasis is not placed solely on the debates within one or the other epistemological system (science or religion), but also on the crossovers and collaborations between them. Religion and science developed through a process of interaction. A changing religious climate and new religious currents provided new cases for study.

Religious phenomena inspired new medical approaches such as the healing power of faith. New medical findings could be adopted to oppose new messiahs and medical imagery came to inspire the campaigns of opponents of aberrant of religious currents. Sign or Symptom? explores how the evolutions within religion and science influenced each other, a productive interaction that has been hidden from view until now.

Henk de Smaele is associate professor of history and member of the research unit Power in History: Centre for Political History at Universiteit Antwerpen.

The texts of Diogenes of Oinoanda (2nd century AD) who invited his readers to an Epicurean life is the largest ancient inscription ever discovered. This collection of essays discusses the philosophical significance of these discoveries and is the first of this kind entirely devoted to Diogenes of Oinoanda. Particular attention is paid to his philosophical aims and polemical strategies. Diogenes was apparently well aware of still ongoing philosophical debates, engaging in polemics against Presocratic philosophers, Platonics, and especially Stoics. His views about important issues like happiness, fear, old age, and the afterlife are explained on the bases of Epicurean physics and theology, ethics, politics, theory of knowledge, and psychology.

Les textes de Diogène d’Œnoanda (Deuxième siècle de notre ère), qui invitait ses lecteurs au mode de vie épicurien, constituent la plus grande inscription antique jamais découverte. Les essais réunis dans ce volume, le premier recueil d’articles entièrement consacré à Diogène d’Œnoanda, examinent la signification de ces découvertes. Ils portent une attention particulière aux intentions philosophiques de Diogène et à ses stratégies polémiques. L’épicurien était manifestement bien averti des débats philosophiques de son temps, engageant lui-même la polémique contre les présocratiques, les platoniciens et, plus spécialement, les stoïciens. Tuomo Pekkanen is one of the major Latin poets of our times. He is renowned for the Latin translation of Finland’s national epic poem, the Kalevala.
