Education and research are essential domains in society, especially in times of crisis and uncertainty, when we all rely heavily on experts and researchers who offer us knowledge, insights, guidance, and solutions. To foster global understanding of disease control and stimulate transdisciplinary initiatives, our open access (OA) journal Transdisciplinary Insights launched in early spring 2020 a ‘living paper’ on the COVID-19 virus (www.lup.be/livingpapers). It provides a structured compilation of scientific data about the virus, the disease, and its control. Its objective is to help scientists identify the most relevant publications in the mass of information. Leuven UP also wants to offer knowledge, insights, guidance, and solutions with the new academic books in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Many of the titles presented in this catalogue show societal engagement and/ or respond to vibrant topical issues such as postcolonialism, racism, feminism, human rights, equity, migration, and experiences of dislocation. It goes without saying that the HSS, from different angles and perspectives, contribute in a fundamental way to a better understanding of human conduct today and in the past. Our authors do not refrain from shifting paradigms and questioning current practices. #educateyourself. We could not agree more. What the pandemic has convincingly shown is that the online environment is more crucial than ever. The importance of digital resources that allow remote education and research, at all levels of specialisation, cannot be overestimated. Neither can the value of fair Open Access and flexible digital printing services that play a vital role in keeping supply chains alive when cross-border logistics are interrupted. Therefore, it is our pleasure to offer in this catalogue a beautiful set of new digital and Open Access titles, including some richly illustrated volumes in the fields of photography and cultural history. Leuven UP is very pleased to see how the OA collection steadily grows, meeting the accelerated need for open academic content. Postcolonialism and migration are major themes in contemporary French comics and have roots in the Algerian War (1954–62), anti-racist struggle, and mass migration to France. This volume studies comics from the formal dismantling of the French colonial empire in 1962 up to the present. French cartoonists of ethnic minority and immigrant heritage are a major focus, including Zeina Abirached (Lebanon), Yvan Alagbé (Benin), Baru (Italy), Enki Bilal ( former Yugoslavia), Farid Boudjellal (Algeria and Armenia), José Jover (Spain), Larbi Mechkour (Algeria), and Roland Monpierre (Guadeloupe). The author analyses comics representing a gamut of perspectives on immigration and postcolonial ethnic minorities, ranging from staunch defense to violent rejection. Individual chapters are dedicated to specific artists, artistic collectives, comics, or themes, including an anti-racist comic strip serialised in Charlie Hebdo, undocumented migrants in comics, and racism in far-right comics. Mark McKinney is professor of French at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, USA. He has written The Colonial Heritage of French Comics (2011) and Redrawing French Empire in Comics (2013).

Mongameli Anthony Mabona (1929) is a singular South African scholar with an exceptional life path. The history of British imperialism and apartheid shaped the world into which he was born. To a large extent, these powers had his destiny carved out for him. Nevertheless, a curious set of coincidences enabled him to obtain a tertiary education as a priest, to pursue his doctoral studies in Italy and to befriend Alioune Diop. He is one of the first published philosophers of Anglophone Africa and holds doctorates in theology and anthropology. His opposition to institutionalised racism – including co-authoring the 1970 ‘Black Priests’ Manifesto’ – eventually led to his exile. This book documents his life and offers a synoptic reading of his scholarly and poetic work. We seem to be living in hysterical times. A simple Google search reveals the sheer bottomless well of ‘hysterical’ discussions on diverse topics such as the #metoo movement, Trumpianism, border wars, Brexit, transgender liberation, Black Lives Matter, COVID-19, and climate change, to name only a few. Against the backdrop of such recent deployments of hysteria in popular discourse – particularly as they emerge in times of material and hermeneutic crisis – Performing Hysteria re-engages the notion of ‘hysteria’. Performing Hysteria rigorously mines late 20th and early 21st century (primarily visual) culture for signs of hysteria. The various essays in this volume contribute to the multilayered and complex discussions that surround and foster this resurgent interest in hysteria – covering such areas as art, literature, theatre, film, television, dance; crossing such disciplines as cultural studies, political science, philosophy, history, media, disability, race and ethnicity, and gender studies; and analysing stereotypical images and representations of the hysteric in relation to cultural sciences and media studies. Of particular importance is the volume’s insistence on taking the intersection of hysteria and performance seriously. Johanna Braun is Erwin Schrödinger Senior PostDoc Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna, where she conducts her FWF project ‘The Hysteric as Conceptual Operator’.

What is the gender of political power? Since the beginning of political thought, rule has been a male prerogative in European imagination. This is of course not to say that there never were women sovereigns. In-depth studies of women sovereigns have grown considerably in number in the past three decades and have added substantially to our understanding of the complexities of their rule of power. Yet what is often obscured by such in-depth analyses is the fact that all women rulers throughout the entirety of European cultural history have had to operate in a context that could not think of power as female – except in grotesque terms. This continuity, as this book demonstrates, can only be brought out by studying women’s political rule comparatively and in the longue durée. This collection of essays brings together studies of female sovereignty from the Polish-Lithuanian to the British Commonwealth, and from the Middle Ages to the dawn of modern democracy. It demonstrates how the strategies and imagination women rulers adopted against the backdrop of an all-pervasive scepticism toward female rule are comparable across regions and periods. To illustrate its point, this book not only addresses historical figures and queens, but also takes stock of the rich yet unsettling imagination of female rule in philosophy, literature and art history. Anke Gilleir is professor of German literature and gender theory at the Department of Literary Studies at KU Leuven. Aude Defurne received her PhD in German literature in 2020 at KU Leuven.

The presence and participation of women in European Christian Democratic parties is one of the most important and radical changes of the past fifty years. After World War II, the acquisition of full voting rights for European women initiated a slow process of acknowledgement of their role in politics: not only as a reservoirs and collectors of votes but also as driving forces. Female Activism and Christian Democratic Parties in Europe traces the history of Christian Democratic women in Italy, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany from the end of World War II to the early 1990s, and investigates the participation of women in institutions and in political life. By using a gender perspective this volume embarks on a new chapter in the history of Christian Democratic organisations. It sheds light on figures, movements, associations, and experiences, and brings together gender and political history. The volume addresses not only the presence and position of women in Christian Democratic European parties, but also their activism in relation to the development of ideology, party programs, and female Christian Democratic movements. New perspectives on human rights prosecutions in various regional contexts

Human rights prosecutions are the most prominent mechanisms that victims demand to obtain accountability. Dealing with a legacy of gross human rights violations presents opportunities to enhance the right to justice and promote a more equal application of criminal law, a fundamental condition for a more substantive democracy in societies. This book seeks to analyse the impact, advances, and difficulties of prosecuting perpetrators of mass atrocities at national and international levels. What role does criminal justice play in redressing victims’ wrongs, guaranteeing the non-repetition of mass atrocities, and attempting to overcome the damage caused by systematic human rights violations? This volume addresses critical issues in the field of human rights prosecution by drawing on the experiences of a variety of post-conflict and authoritarian countries covering three world regions. Contributing authors cover prosecutions in post-Nazi Germany, post-Communist Romania, and transnational legal complaints by victims of the Franco dictatorship, as well as domestic and third-country prosecutions for human rights violations in the pioneering South American countries of Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, prosecutions in Darfur and Kenya, and the work of the International Criminal Court. The Impact of Human Rights Prosecutions offers insights into the difficulties human rights trials face in different contexts and regions, and also illustrates the development of these legal procedures over time. Over the past 60 years high-income countries have invested over 4000 billion euros in development aid. With varying degrees of success, these investments in low-income countries contributed to tackling structural problems such as access to water, health care, and education. The willingness to migrate in search of employment is in itself insufficient to compel anyone to move. The dynamics of labour mobility are heavily influenced by the opportunities perceived and the imaginaries held by both employers and regulating authorities in relation to migrant labour. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the structures and imaginaries underlying various forms of mobility. Based on research conducted in different geographical contexts, including the European Union, Turkey, and South Africa, and tackling the experiences and aspirations of migrants from various parts of the globe, the chapters comprised in this volume analyse labour-related mobilities from two distinct yet intertwined vantage points: the role of structures and regimes of mobility on the one hand, and aspirations as well as migrant imaginaries on the other. Migration at Work thus aims to draw cross-contextual parallels by addressing the role played by opportunities in mobilizing people, how structures enable, sustain, and change different forms of mobility, and how imaginaries fuel labour migration and vice versa. In doing so, this volume also aims to tackle the interrelationships between imaginaries driving migration and shaping ‘regimes of mobility’, as well as how the former play out in different contexts, shaping internal and cross-border migration. Based on empirical research in various fields, this collection provides valuable scholarship and evidence on current processes of migration and mobility. Fiona-Katharina Seiger is a sociologist by training who has worked with women, children, and youth in Japan and the Philippines. She holds a PhD from the National University of Singapore. Christiane Timmerman (†) was professor of anthropology and director of the Center for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS) at the University of Antwerp. Noel B. Salazar is research professor in anthropology at KU Leuven, Belgium. Johan Wets (PhD social sciences) is migration research manager at the Research Institute for Work and Society (HIVA), an interdisciplinary research institute from the University of Leuven, Belgium (KU Leuven).

In the months and years immediately following the First World War, the many (European) countries that had formed its battleground were confronted with daunting challenges. Luc Verpoest is emeritus professor at the KU Leuven where he has been teaching architectural history and theory and history of heritage conservation. He is still publishing in these particular research fields. Leen Engelen is historian of media and visual culture at LUCA School of Arts/KU Leuven and president of the International Association for Media and History. Rajesh Heynickx is intellectual historian at the KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture. In his work he focuses on the history of architectural theory and the transformation of aesthetic theories in the twentieth century. Jan Schmidt is historian of modern and contemporary Japan at KU Leuven, focusing on political and media history. Pieter Uyttenhove is associate professor of history and theory of urbanism at Ghent University. Among a wide spectrum of American Protestants, the horrors of World War II triggered grave concern for Europe’s religious future. They promptly mobilised resources to revive Europe’s Christian foundation. Saving the Overlooked Continent reconstructs this surprising redirection of Western missions. For the first time, Europe became the recipient of America’s missionary enterprise. The American missionary impulse matched the military, economic, and political programs of the US, all of which positioned the United States to become Europe’s dominant partner and point of cultural reference. One result was the importation of the internal conflicts that vexed American Protestants – theological tensions between modernists and traditionalists, and organisational competition between established churches and independent parachurch associations. Europe was offered a new slate of options that sparked civic and ecclesiastical responses. But behind these contending religious networks lay a considerable overlap of goals and means based on a shared missionary trajectory. By the mid-1960s, most Protestant American agencies admitted that the expectation of a religious revival had been too optimistic despite their initiatives having led to an integration of Europe in the global evangelical network. The agencies reconsidered their assumptions and redefined their strategies. The initial opposition between inclusive and exclusive approaches abated, and the path opened to a sustained cooperation among once-fierce opponents. Peter de Rivo (c. 1420–1499), a renowned philosopher active at the University of Leuven, is today mostly remembered for his controversial role in the quarrel over future contingents (1465–1475). Much less known are his contributions to historical chronology, in particular his attempts to determine the dates of Christ’s birth and death. In 1471, Peter made an original contribution to this long-standing discussion with his Dyalogus de temporibus Christi, which reconciles conflicting views by rewriting the history of the Jewish and Christian calendars. Later in his career, Peter tackled the issue of calendar reform in his Reformacio kalendarii Romani (1488) and engaged in a heated debate with Paul of Middelburg on the chronology of Christ. This book edits the Dyalogus and Reformacio and sets out their context and transmission in an extensive historical introduction.

Thomas Aquinas’ Summa theologiae is one of the classics in the history of theology and philosophy. Gebruik van vroegmoderne geschiedenis in discussies over canonvorming, (post) kolonialisme, nationalisme en historische vergelijkingen

De vroegmoderne periode kan de laatste jaren rekenen op grote belangstelling in Nederland en Vlaanderen. In maatschappelijke discussies over (nationale) identiteit, onderwijs en de erfgoedsector wijzen opiniemakers bijvoorbeeld graag op de economische, politieke, sociale en culturele verworvenheden van de periode voor 1800. Deze interesse in het verleden is uiteraard toe te juichen, maar het politieke gebruik van historische verwijzingen staat ook op gespannen voet met wetenschappelijke geschiedbeoefening. Beleidsmakers lijken geschiedenis te zien als een grabbelton waaruit ze naar believen kunnen putten. Vele vroegmodernisten staan dan ook eerder sceptisch tegenover de maatschappelijke benutting van academische inzichten. Hoe gaan historici van de vroegmoderne tijd best om met deze praktijk? Deze vraag staat centraal in dit nummer van Nieuwe Tijdingen. De bijdragen besteden onder andere aandacht aan het gebruik van vroegmoderne geschiedenis in discussies over canonvorming, (post)kolonialisme, nationalisme en historische vergelijkingen. Het jaarboek werpt daarmee nieuw licht op de vraag hoe en waarom (onderzoek over) de vroegmoderne periode wordt geïnstrumentaliseerd en gerepresenteerd in actuele maatschappelijke debatten, en welke rol vroegmoderne historici daarbij zouden kunnen spelen. Hans Cools is verbonden aan de KU Leuven, waar hij onder andere Geschiedenis van de Nieuwe Tijd en Politics and Societies in the Early Modern World doceert. Jasper van der Steen is postdoc-onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Leiden. Hij werkt momenteel aan zijn NWO veni-project ‘The Nassaus and the Family Business of Power in Early Modern Europe’.

Welke gebeurtenissen, plekken en figuren blijven er hangen in het geheugen van achttien prominente Belgen als ze aan hun land denken? Op deze vraag zochten Franstalige en Nederlandstalige academici gedurende enkele jaren een antwoord. Ze organiseerden ontmoetingen met Belgische duo’s uit uiteenlopende maatschappelijke domeinen: de journalisten Nina Verhaeghe en Christian Laporte, de politici Herman Van Rompuy en Philippe Moureaux, de dichters Dirk Van Bastelaere en Laurence Vielle, de regisseurs Jan Verheyen en Adil El Arbi, de schrijvers Kristien Hemmerechts en Vincent Engel, de atleten Laurence Rase en Jean-Michel Saive, de zakenmensen Yves Noël & Christ’l Joris, de syndicalisten Caroline Copers en Felipe Van Keirsbilck, de imam en islamleraar Brahim Laytouss en de theologe Myriam Tonus. Je ontdekt in deze unieke dialogen hoe er tijdens de ontmoetingen gedeelde herinneringen zijn – zoals de Rode Duivels op het WK in 1986 of de zaak Dutroux – maar ook waar de herinneringen tussen de gesprekspartners sterk uiteenlopen – over de Eerste Wereldoorlog bijvoorbeeld, of over Brussel. De verschillen lopen vaak langs de lijnen van de gemeenschappen van ons land, maar zeker niet altijd. Ook verschillen tussen de maatschappelijke domeinen van de gesprekspartners worden duidelijk. In een uitgebreide conclusie brengen de redacteurs de belangrijkste rode draden en lacunes in de gesprekken samen: wat zit er in het Belgische collectieve geheugen, wat niet en hoe komt dat geheugen naar boven in de gesprekken. Elke Brems is het hoofd van het departement Vertaalwetenschap van de faculteit Letteren van de KU Leuven. Marnix Beyen doceert hedendaagse politieke geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Antwerpen, waar hij verbonden is aan Power in History – Centrum voor Politieke Geschiedenis. Ariane Bazan is doctor in de biologie (Universiteit Gent) en in de psychologie (Universiteit van Lyon). Ze is hoogleraar klinische psychologie en psycho pathologie aan de Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) en heeft een privépraktijk als psychoanalyticus.

Olivier Luminet, doctor in de psychologie, is onderzoeksdirecteur aan het Fonds de la recherche scientifique (FRS-FNRS) en professor in de psychologie aan de UCLouvain en de Université libre de Bruxelles. Valérie Rosoux is senior onderzoeker aan het Fonds de la recherche scientifique (FRS-FNRS) en hoogleraar aan de UCLouvain waar ze les geeft in internationale onderhandelingen en transitional justice.

De beeldvorming over de ‘Nieuwe Wereld’ was de voorbije decennia aan fundamentele veranderingen onderhevig. Het perspectief bleef echter vaak westers. Het vijfde volume in de reeks Historisch denken volgt zowel de voetstappen van de veroveraars als van de overwonnenen. Van ontdekking tot ontwrichting analyseert chronologisch de gebeurtenissen in Amerika na 1492. De ‘ontdekking’ van Amerika door Columbus resulteerde in een ontmoeting met de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het continent, waarna de ontginning van het grondgebied begon, die een enorme ontwrichting met zich meebracht. De vier thema’s – ontdekking, ontmoeting, ontginning en ontwrichting – worden belicht vanuit een intercultureel perspectief van ‘wederkerigheid’ en steunen op de meest recente historiografie. Daarbij gaat speciale aandacht naar de rol van vrouwen in de ‘Nieuwe wereld’. In een tweede deel krijgt de lezer aan de hand van een waaier aan historische bronnen een didactische vertaling geschikt voor leerlingen van de tweede graad secundair onderwijs, helemaal conform de nieuwe eindtermen geschiedenis. Van ontdekking tot ontwrichting is een aanrader voor geschiedenis leerkrachten, zowel in lager als secundair onderwijs, en al wie geïnteresseerd is in de ontdekkingsreizen, interculturele contacten, vrouwengeschiedenis en Amerika na 1492.

Johan Verberckmoes is als hoogleraar verbonden aan de onderzoeksgroep Geschiedenis van de Nieuwe Tijd van de KU Leuven. Guy Putseys was gedurende bijna twee decennia als praktijklector verbonden aan de Specifieke Lerarenopleiding Geschiedenis van de KU Leuven. Tim Puttevils is pedagogisch begeleider cultuurwetenschappen en geschiedenis bij Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen.

Herman Sterckx is als praktijklector verbonden aan de educatieve master cultuurwetenschappen – vakdidactiek geschiedenis van de KU Leuven. Sophie Verreyken werkt aan de KU Leuven aan een doctoraat over de huwelijken van Hispano-Vlaamse elites in de Habsburgse Nederlanden. Karel Van Nieuwenhuyse is als hoofddocent geschiedenisdidactiek coördinator van de educatieve master cultuurwetenschappen KU Leuven.
