The Murphy Chamber Scholarship Foundation was founded as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation in 2006. Our mission is to award graduating Murphy resident seniors scholarship monies to further their education. To date we have awarded $103,000 to 66 Murphy students. In 2020, six awards of $1500 were open to all Murphy resident students who graduated the end of the 2019-20 school year, including CTE (Career and Technical Education) students, home-school and private school students, along with our PISD and WISD college bound Murphy resident seniors.

Plano ISD is a district

What? Monkey Business? by Donna Brumit Jenkins In Murphy? In August 1989, The Wylie News reported some monkey business was going on in Murphy. Murphy police officer, Ben Ferguson, said it was one of the strangest cases he ever worked. A citizen on Moonlight Drive reported there was a monkey in their trees. The police responded, but could not catch the grey primate with a black and white face capering around the trees on Moonlight, Horizon, and Skyline Drives. Ida Holloway, who still lives in Murphy, was the first citizen to report the monkey when her grandchildren rushed into her home talking excitedly about a monkey in the tree on her front lawn. First, she thought the monkey was just a joke and her grandchildren had placed a toy monkey in her

tree. When she found it was not a joke, she became afraid the monkey might bite the children, and she called the Murphy police. With a large number of neighborhood children loaded with bananas assembled around the tree, the monkey moved on to other escapades and continued to avoid capture. Another woman on Moonlight Drive looked out to see a monkey patiently sitting on her deck. By that point in the adventures, the police had located the monkey’s owners, Mr. and Mrs. Counselor from Kemp, who set up two cages on Moonlight hoping to catch the sly creature. However, the crafty monkey scampered across South Murphy Road into a group of trees. Mr. Counselor and police returned to Moonlight to
retrieve the cages while Mrs. Counselor stayed behind with a bunch of grapes, his favorite food. The monkey could not resist, and he jumped from the trees into her waiting arms. The cunning creature was on the loose for five days following his escape from the Counselors business in south Garland near Mesquite. This is only one of the many human interest stories the Murphy Historical Society wanted to research and record. The Society will celebrate their tenth anniversary in October 2021. They collect photographs, newspaper articles, and relevant historical archives and plan to share them with the public at the celebration. Over four hundred archives are recorded in the Murphy community collection, and

they hope to have a place to display and store the items, and someday have a museum to further the goal of “Preserving Murphy History for Future Generations.” The organization, likewise, is the guardian of three of four Texas Historical Designated Cemeteries. They maintain the cemeteries with the help of citizens who volunteer to clean and remove brush and weeds from the cemeteries and donations. The Society marks historical places in Murphy with state and county markers. To date, there are 13 county and state markers in Murphy.
The most recent marker dedicated is the Comfort Allen and Lydia McMillan Farm Marker located on the land which once to belonged to the McMillen family and currently is owned by Dr. Lorraine
