Greetings From the Mayor On behalf of the residents, City Staff and the Murphy City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the City of Murphy. Our Motto is: “Life Lived At Your Pace.”
Murphy is located in southeastern Collin County – the fastest growing county in the nation – between the cities of Parker, Plano, Richardson, Sachse, and Wylie. In Murphy, you can enjoy a variety of annual events and festivals that appeal to all ages. The City of Murphy remains in the top 10 listing of the best and safest places to live in Texas. The City Council and I are dedicated to our current and future residents and are excited for what the future has to offer to our growing community.

The Murphy Chamber Scholarship Foundation was founded as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation in 2006. Our mission is to award graduating Murphy resident seniors scholarship monies to further their education. To date, we have awarded $112,000 to 72 Murphy students. In 2021, six awards of $1500 were open to all Murphy resident students who graduated the end of the 2020-21 school year, including CTE (Career and Technical Education) students, home-school and private school students, along with our PISD and WISD college bound Murphy resident seniors.

Plano ISD is a district
steeped in history and a tradition of excellence spanning more than 100 years. With a mission to “provide an excellent education to all students,” Plano ISD serves the residents of approximately 100 square miles in southwest Collin County. This area includes the city of Plano, as well as portions of the cities of Richardson, Dallas, Murphy, Allen, Parker, Garland, Lucas, Carrollton and Wylie. Plano ISD employs nearly 7,000 faculty and staff members who serve more than 52,000 students in 72 schools and 18 additional instructional and service facilities. Young scholars, artists and athletes have brought numerous regional, state and national championships to the district. For more than 100 years the Wylie
Independent School District has emphasized academic excellence through outstanding educational opportunities and awardwinning extracurricular activities, all based on our core community values. Looking Back in Time Looking at all the rapidly developing Murphy neighborhoods and its ever-growing business community, it is hard to imagine how different the city was 150 years ago, both in its appearance and the population.
first settlers were Scotch-Irish, Presbyterian and Democrats; many were illiterate and could only sign their name with an X. Soon, doctors, lawyers, shopkeepers, teachers, and preachers joined
It all began in the southeastern corner of Collin County. Murphy, part of the Peters Colony, was located on the Blackland Prairie region. Native grasses included bluestem, buffalo, and mesquite, which flourished in the black clay soil. Moderate temperatures and ample rainfall made the area an excellent region for farming and ranching, which attracted settlers from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The low cost of land was a draw as well.
Mary Jane Cheatham
Ema Jean Christian donated the two photographs of Mary Jane Cheatham; they were discovered in a stack of towels in the bathroom of a relative who passed away. Mary Jane Marsalis Cheatham was born Nov. 28, 1844, in Mississippi. As a young girl, she moved to Louisiana with her parents, Thomas and Sarah Marsalis. In Beulah Wallis 1865, she married Hogge William P. Cheatham and had three living children; two others died as infants. William P. Cheatham died in 1872. According to the 1880 census, Mary Jane and her three children lived on a cotton farm with her parents in Murphy. Life was no doubt demanding for a widow whose occupation was listed as a cotton farmer.
The area was rich in natural resources including abundant Mary Jane Cheatham timber for cabin construction. Native trees included pecan, elm, bois d’arc, walnut, willow, hackberry, persimmon, and oak. Deer, bears, and rabbits inhabited the woods, and fish swam in Maxwell Creek and Daniel Herring other small streams. Other game, including wild pigs and turkeys, the early pioneers. Photographs of these trailblazers have been collected by the Murphy Historical Society over the last 10 years, part of its mission to “Preserve the History of Murphy for Future Generations.” Each of these pictures has its own unique history of recovery.
Unlike many early citizens, Mary Jane could read and write, and she enjoyed reading the newspaper near the cotton field. She passed away in 1932 at age 87 in the same house in which she had resided since 1876. She was buried in the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy Cemetery. Beulah Wallis Hogge was born in Murphy in 1875, the daughter of Charles H. Wallis and Mattie
Shelton Wallis. She married Thomas E. Hogge in 1837, and their children included Carl, Arthur, Huston, Charles, and DeWitt. Many of Beulah’s relatives, including her mother, were buried in the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy Cemetery, and Thomas’s relatives were buried in the Herring-Hogge Cemetery. Beulah and Thomas are both interred at Restland Memorial Cemetery.
Surprisingly enough, Beulah’s photograph was in an old photo album discovered in a McKinney antique store by Mike Massey. Mr. Massey was drawn to the album because it reminded him of one his grandmother had when he was a boy. He made the purchase and donated it to the Murphy Historical Society in 2010. Only six photos remained in the album, including one of Beulah Hogge. Another album found in a McKinney antique store was donated to the historical society in 2015. The Hogge and Herring families were represented in the 28 daguerreotypes.
Daniel Herring was born in 1812 and was a sixth-generation American colonist from Virginia. He arrived in Texas by way of Illinois on Dec. 24, 1848. His wife, Mary Deck Herring, died not long after arriving in Texas and is buried in the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy Cemetery. Daniel, along with his second wife, Elizabeth Newman, are buried in the Herring-Hogge Cemetery. MURPHY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Murphy Historical Society has been fortunate to accrue a number of historical photographs, including those above. The society’s collection began in 2011. Many of the photographs were digitized and are in the University of North Texas’s Historical Photography Collection
the goal of housing all artifacts, preserving photographs, and presenting programs for children and adults. Society members hope the citizens of Murphy and surrounding communities will encourage Murphy City Council to discuss such a museum, a location for it, and a way to assist the Murphy Historical Society in funding the project. •

Wa t e r / T r a s h Service: To set up up water/trash service visit our Customer Service staff at Murphy City Hall. Murphy residents enjoy weekly pickup of trash, recycle and bulky/yard waste. These pickups all occur on your regular service day. Bulky/Yard waste is limited to 4 cubic yards per week; limbs should be bundled and cut into 4 foot sections. P e r mi t s Permits are required for; alarms (annually), Garage Sales (3x annually), building, remodeling, enlarging a structure, fence replacement, water heater replacement, etc. Permits are not required for cosmetic things such as painting, wallpapering, carpeting, cabinet replacement, etc. R a v e / S ma r t 9 11 Alerts Residents are encouraged to stay informed about severe weather, city updates, and other emergency alerts by signing up for Rave/Smart 911 alerts. It's free and only takes a few minutes to sign up. In the event of an alert being sent out, you will be notified via text, email and/or phone call. You can also load important information such as medications and medical conditions that can help first responders in the event of an emergency. L o c k B o x / V i d eo Crime Watch The City of Murphy Police Department offers these programs free of charge to Murphy residents. The Lock Box program is intended to expedite access to older adults or individuals with major medical issues without damaging property from forced entry. The Video Crime Watch is a program where residents/businesses with surveillance systems can join the database and potentially help our officers with cases.
