The dust from the Texas Revolution had barely settled when investors advertised land grants for colonization in the Republic of Texas. Early pioneers were lured from the southern United States with the promise of cheap land, good soil, plentiful water, and abundant resources.
One such pioneer was William Andrew Murphy, born in 1816, in North Carolina. His parents moved to Indiana when he was a young child. William married Dorothy Hundiburgh in Indiana in 1841, and by the 1850s the family moved by wagon train, purchasing 170 acres on Dublin Road. By 1867, the family sold the Dublin land and purchased a
farm about one-half mile north of Maxwell Creek.
Thus began the story of William Andrew Murphy and his contributions to what is known today as the city of Murphy. The Murphy farm had an orchard of 200 peach trees, 10 horses,
16 hogs, and a few dairy and beef cattle. They raised corn and cotton and kept bees for honey. William and Dorothy had 11 children and were members of the Church of Christ which later changed its name to the Christian Church. The family home was once located at what is now 401 North Maxwell Creek.
As an early pioneer, William Murphy contributed to the community by donating land for religious and educational use. A portion of his land was donated for the Old Christian Church
and Decatur School, both of which were built near what is now FM 544.
When William’s sister, Susan Murphy Emberton, died in 1872, he set aside about one-half acre of land along Maxwell Creek for a family cemetery. He planned
the cemetery for his children and their families; however, the male members of the family moved to west Texas or southern Oklahoma and set up their own farms. The females of the family remained in Murphy and married men from the community, and their families were buried in the cemetery. The daughters planted 100 red cedar trees in the cemetery, of which only about 25 still stand. Eventually others outside the family were buried in Murphy Family Cemetery.
When the railroad expressed interest in passing through Old Decatur, as Murphy was then called, the Murphy family gave right-of-way for the railroad to pass through their land and built the first depot along the railroad tracks. The name Murphy was painted on the depot. The community needed a post office, but upon making application,
they learned that there was already a city called Decatur in Texas. The community chose the name Murphy from the name on the depot. Mail was shipped by way of the railroad and delivered on a hook mounted on the side of the depot. James L. Murphy became the first postmaster of the post office located inside the depot. The railroad was a boost for area farmers, providing a method of shipping cotton, corn, and wheat to market.
Murphy Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of all the local pioneers, including William Murphy. Although many citizens have asked if photos of this influential settler are available, the only photograph in existence is from a newspaper published around the time of his death in 1909. Family members said they discarded all the “old stuff” including pictures when William’s last granddaughter passed away. The society commissioned a Houston artist, Karen Murphy, to create a portrait of him utilizing the old newspaper clipping. The blackand-white photo didn’t provide a clue as to his eye or hair color, but since research had shown that Murphy was descended
from Irish and Scottish ancestors, the artist was asked to use light colors for his hair and eyes.
The historical society is also charged with preserving three of Murphy’s historical cemeteries: the Murphy Family Cemetery, the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy, and Herring-Hogge Cemetery. The pioneers, military heroes, farmers, ranchers, teachers, preachers, mothers, fathers, and children who lie in these cemeteries all contributed to Murphy’s beginnings. Of the many projects undertaken by the Murphy Historical Society, preserving the three cemeteries is perhaps the most costly. Volunteers are called upon at least two times each year to help clean and mow the three cemeteries; however, funds must be raised by the society to pay for repairs to the stones and fences, mow and cut bushes, and cut damaged trees. The society writes grants, collects donations, and holds fundraisers to preserve the cemeteries. Fundraisers such as the “1920s Murder Mystery Dinner Theater” last spring provide funds to preserve artifacts, pay for archival boxes and tissue, and archival storage. Funds are also needed for postage, printing, paper, programs, and other fees associated with maintaining a 501(c)(3) organization. The
society’s major fundraiser for 2024 will be “Blue Jeans, Bobby Socks, and Poodle Skirts: 1950s Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.” The murder mystery is especially written for and set in Murphy, Texas, and will be presented on April 13, 2024. Please make plans to attend. Another fundraiser is set for the fall.
Membership in Murphy Historical Society is open to all citizens in the Murphy area. We encourage high school students interested in local history to join the society. The historical group is always in need of workers and volunteers to help preserve the heritage of Murphy. We also encourage Eagle Scout projects and are especially proud of the four Scouts who contributed to the cemeteries’ upkeep in 2023.
