We continue to expand our Young Entrepreneur Program, offering leadership skill-building opportunities and introductory principles of building a business to kids under 18. We are now also a certifying organization of the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award to those who apply and meet

It takes time to build the long-term, nurturing relationships that eventually return dividends for both you and your business. The Murphy Chamber Scholarship Foundation was founded as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation in 2006. Our mission is to award graduating Murphy resident seniors scholarship monies to further their education. To date, we have awarded $124,000 to 80 Murphy students. In 2022, eight awards of $1,500 were open to all Murphy resident students who graduated the end of the 202122 school year, including CTE (Career and Technical Education) students, home-school and private school students, along with our PISD and WISD college bound Murphy resident seniors.

Murphy’s ‘Corridor’: Looking Back Fondly, Looking Ahead Eagerly

The Murphy Grocery Store is as iconic to area residents as Pegasus is to Dallas or the Stockyards are to Fort Worth. Opened as a general store at the intersection of Murphy Road and FM 544 by J.T. and Lovinia Knight in 1910, the first customers arrived on horseback to purchase household goods and get information, such as who had a house or land for sale or how to acquire electricity in their homes. After crops were harvested, men met to play dominoes, cards, or croquet, and the locals had a “Spit and Whittle Club,” made up of three or four old men who met to chew tobacco, whittle, and discuss the world’s problems. Kids walked or rode horses for a cold soda, no doubt kept in an “ice box.”

By the time the Knights sold

the store to T.E. Posey in 1925, automobiles had begun to make the trek down that twolane road, and folks came to the store to use the telephone before they had one of their own. Posey may well have had the first local gasoline pumps and air compressor for tires.

Charlie and Mildred King purchased the store in the 1960s. Now it boasted “something for everyone”: candy, soda pop, gasoline, fishing supplies, cigarettes, and thread. Don Chaddick, who grew up in Murphy, was the final owner of the

landmark, and locals visited the store for its famous Texas-sized hamburgers. Sadly for some – and happily for those who considered it an eyesore – the Murphy Grocery Store was razed in the ’90s to facilitate the widening of FM 544.

been immortalized, not just in the collective community memory, but also in more tangible ways. Country recording artist Mark David Manders, who grew up in Plano and now lives in Frisco, paid tribute in a song:

Murphy, a town?

Well, she wasn’t much more

Than the crossroads of two farm roads

Where stood the Murphy Store …

And the Murphy Store stood for a better way of life

And the Murphy Store stood for fifty years

Perhaps the most familiar tribute is the painting by local artist John Pototschnik, featured on the cover. Patrick Hoare interviewed Pototschnik for his blog. “I was a freelance commercial illustrator for 10 years and left that profession in 1982 to concentrate on the fine arts. Wanting to create paintings for a living, I put my work in galleries and over time built a strong collector base.”

Pototschnik and his wife Marcia moved from Garland to Wylie in 1980 and built a house in what was then “the country.” When he discovered the Murphy Grocery Store, he couldn’t resist capturing its image on canvas. “Several times I set up my easel across the street and created small oil studies from life,” Pototschnik said in the blog interview. “At that time, FM 544 was a small, winding two-lane road from Plano. One day, I was there painting … when the owner of the store crossed the street,

came over to me, and said, ‘What are you doing? I didn’t give you permission to paint my store.’ I said, ‘What do you mean? This is a public building.’ He was not very happy with me, but eventually he just walked off and I continued working. Those studies proved very helpful as I created several large paintings of the store from them, even creating a series of paintings to sell.” Murphy’s women’s league purchased several of the prints to sell as a fundraiser for their organization. The idea of the Murphy Grocery Store being located at a crossroads – FM 544 and Murphy Road –has been carried forward by stakeholders hoping to brand the area and attract even more businesses and retail to the rapidly growing two-mile stretch along FM 544. Once the road was widened, commercial development quickly followed, transforming the quiet stretch “between” places to a destination, providing jobs, supporting the economy through robust sales and use taxes, and forming the central point for consumers seeking goods, services, dining, and entertainment options. However, realizing that consumers have many choices, city officials began in earnest last year to maximize their chances of keeping the momentum going by undertaking a rebranding campaign for the district.

Jared Mayfield, director of the city’s Community and Economic Development Department, said a steering committee comprised of board members of the Murphy Development Corporation and the Murphy Municipal Development District verbalized its goal: “to improve brand awareness of Murphy and its shopping district.” A seven-person branding

committee worked with Eisenberg & Associates, a consulting firm with a long history of branding and marketing campaigns. After the thorough and exhaustive review process, the committee settled on a concept: “The Corridor.”

“’The Corridor’ as a brand is distinctive and stands out in a cluttered marketplace of competing business districts,” said firm Creative Director Arlo Eisenberg. “The name speaks directly to the unique property of ‘the corridor’ of businesses along FM 544 but also elevates the brand into something marketable; it sounds like a gathering place, where things are happening.”

So this historic intersection of roads becomes a successful intersection of old and new: the nostalgic early days of the Murphy Grocery Store, and the energetic, forward-moving future of Murphy’s commercial district. •
