Transformation

Triumphs There have been a lot of “butterfly” sightings lately at the Anne Carlsen Center .. .

Adam Wahl flashes a huge smile, as he and his date, Trisha Johnson, pose for photos in the ACC auditorium.

A

t Prom 2012 we saw them in their unfurling glory gliding along the dance floor.

These “butterflies” are the remarkable individuals we serve. And, every two years, our students— ages 16 and older—don sparkling gowns and stylish suits for a fun and memorable evening of elegance. The prom on May 5 included a dance, formal dinner, grand march and coronation. More “butterflies” soared to the stage to receive their diplomas at graduation.

During a touching ceremony on May 25, five students graduated from the Anne Carlsen Center. Their class motto was “Let us go out and be a light in the world.” They lit up the ACC auditorium with their smiles, as they looked out and saw family and friends who had gathered to help celebrate their achievements and the promise of the future. The “butterflies” of the Anne Carlsen Center experience an impressive process of metamorphosis. With the guidance of the Center’s highly-trained staff, individuals of all ages develop the skills, strength

and confidence needed to break through their “cocoons” to experience greater independence, meaningful relationships and satisfying opportunities—at home, at school and throughout the community. Soaring. Dazzling. Strong. Inspiring. These breathtaking transformations are made possible with your support. We are deeply touched by your compassion, generosity and faithfulness.

Purposeful Growth

E

verywhere you turn at the Anne Carlsen Center, there is evidence of growth.

Step inside the solarium on our Jamestown campus, and as you bask in the warm sunlight, you will see and smell a variety of vegetables, herbs, perennials and ornamentals. Our students grew them all from seed to plant in the school gardens or to sell in the annual plant sale in May. Just outside the solarium, you’ll find the lush, beautiful gardens. Some are at ground level; others are in raised planter beds to allow for greater accessibility. Throughout this summer, our students will water and weed, tend and nurture. The end results are always awe-inspiring. As our gardening program continues to thrive, so do the individuals we serve. The Anne Carlsen Center provides children and young adults with a nurturing environment, highly-skilled care, and an innovative and individualized approach to our services and programs. While we empower and equip, they match our efforts—every step of the way! These remarkable individuals never cease to amaze us with their determination and zest for life. It is thrilling to see all those we serve—from infants to adults—grow in every aspect of their lives. This organization, thriving since 1941, places particular importance on growth. A leader in the disability services arena, we are continually expanding and enhancing our programs in order to address important needs and challenges in North Dakota. In this ACC Stakeholder Report edition of The Ambassador, we provide you with a detailed look at our programs, services and progress. As a non-profit organization dedicated to transparency, we know how important it is for supporters of the Anne Carlsen Center to fully understand how funds are used. You’ll find a variety of important figures and information in our 2011 Annual Report on pages 14–16. The funding for the services the Anne Carlsen Center provides comes from local, state and federal sources, as well as from the current and long-term giving of our faithful donors. We are grateful for each and every gift and for all who support our mission in so many ways. Of all these sources of revenue, 88 percent in 2011 went directly toward our programs and services for children, adults and their families. We are pleased to report that this is an extremely high percentage in the non-profit sphere. The Minnesota Charities Review Council recommends at least 65 percent of annual revenue be used for direct program support, and the ideal range, the Council says, is 70–90 percent.

T HE

With strong and deeplyestablished roots—and the inspiration of our namesake Dr. Anne Carlsen—the Anne Carlsen Center continues to expand its reach. In 2002, we served 165 individuals. Ten years later, we are providing valuable programs and support to about 1,300 children and adults throughout the state. Whether individuals receive our services on our Jamestown campus, in their home, or in their community, they and their families can count on the Center’s heritage of dedication, expertise and compassion. Research points to growing needs in the area of autism services and intervention. We continue to enhance our services for those affected by autism and related disorders, and our newly-established Autism Services and Centers focuses on systematic and purposeful skill development. Direct services are provided by specially-trained interventionists, and a licensed clinical psychologist provides clinical oversight. It’s all part of our passion for purposeful growth. And just as our students experience the educational and sensory-rich (and tasty!) rewards of their efforts in the ACC gardens, we are rewarded to see those we serve grow and develop as they benefit from our programs. What a privilege it is to witness individuals with disabilities achieve greater independence, make meaningful contributions in their communities, and become part of the fabric of society! Thank you for the role you play in providing “growing” opportunities for the individuals we serve. Your faithful support empowers this organization to meet diverse and critical needs. It’s our passion to make the world a more inclusive place where independence is a gift to all, and we are honored to have you as a vital partner in this mission. With gratitude,

Day on Links Makes Big Difference for ACC

T

he 29th Annual Anne Carlsen Center (ACC) Benefit Golf Tournament was held August 6, 2011, adding another successful chapter to North Dakota’s longest-running golf event of its kind. The Mixed Scramble offered an enjoyable day on the course, as well as an awards ceremony and dinner. The team of Tom Kenna, Craig Kemmet, Doug Wahl and Cory Wahl received top honors in the Scratch Division, while the team of Nic Spenningsby, Zach Welding, Katie Eggl and Matt Eggl took top honors in the Handicap Division. The funds raised by the tournament players and sponsors are helping support the summer camp experience for about 20 teens with disabilities. During ACC Week at Elks Camp Grassick near Dawson, N.D., youth with the high degrees of physical, cognitive and/or communication impairments enjoy functional learning activities paired with traditional camp favorites like hayrides, bonfires, swimming in the lake, and talent shows. Mark Your Calendar!

The 30th Annual ACC Golf Benefit will be held Saturday, August 11, at Jamestown Country Club. Tournament highlights will include a hole-in-one contest and a putting contest. The day begins with registration at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Play is limited to the first 144 paid entries. The cost is $100 per person. “As with everything about the Center, the Annual Anne Carlsen Center Benefit Golf Tournament has grown to be one of the biggest in the area,” says Donna Zimmerman, ACC’s Interim Development Director. “This is our 30th year, and the added good news is that—after two years of flooding issues—the Country Club course is back up to full speed with 18 great holes that will truly challenge participants as they compete in this Tournament with a Heart.” If you are interested in participating as a golfer, sponsor or volunteer, please contact Naomi Grueneich at 701-952-5156 or naomi.grueneich @annecenter.org. 6 The Ambassador

Highly-trained staff, assistive technology and adapted equipment helped campers fully participate in the summer camp experience and become more proficient in their communication and computer skills. REVENUES – The Anne Carlsen Center (ACC) has a proud heritage of wise stewardship. In 2011, ACC continued this tradition, demonstrating efficiency and effectiveness in the use of the funds we receive. Of all our sources of revenue (outlined below), 88 percent in 2011 went directly toward our programs and services for children, adults and their families. This is within the ideal range, according to the accountability standards developed by non-profit databases. Note: The Charities Review Council of Minnesota, Inc., recommends at least 65 percent of a non-profit’s three-year average annual revenue be used for direct program support, and the ideal range, according to the Council, is 70–90 percent. The funding the Anne Carlsen Center receives comes from local, state and federal sources, as well as from the generous support of donors who believe in our mission and values. Local Funding – The Center receives funding from local school districts for the children unable to attend the public school system. State Funding –The state of North Dakota believes the care for individuals with intellectual disabilities is important, and the legislature generously appropriates Medicaid funds for these individuals. Federal Funding – The federal government allocates funding for individuals with disabilities through Special Education appropriations. Development Funding –The Anne Carlsen Center Foundation provides funding for special projects that support the needs … and enhance the abilities … of the children and young adults we serve. Our generous donors have provided funds for our therapy pool, the solarium, technology tools, a Chaplaincy Program, adaptive playground equipment, and a variety of other specialized equipment. Current Giving – The Anne Carlsen Center receives contributions from multiple sources, which include: Donations – From specific donor events such as Giving Hearts Day, to designated appeals, to contributions given in response to our Ambassador publication—gifts from friends of the Center represent an important portion of the money used to fund our unique and special projects. Memorials/In Honor Of – Donating in memory of an individual who has passed away or in honor of a close living friend or relative provides an opportunity to empower others for years to come. Securities– Gifting an investment to the Center may be the optimal way to provide a significant gift that is sure to change lives. Planned Giving – Anne Carlsen Center donors also participate in a variety of unique giving opportunities that ensure sustainability of our programs. Long-term gift opportunities include: 14 The Ambassador

Gifts by Will – Bequests, both large and small, account for a major portion of the Center’s endowment, and provide significant funding for programs, facilities and student/client support. In addition to being one of the simplest ways to distribute your estate, your will can also be a creative vehicle through which you can make a thoughtful gift to the Anne Carlsen Center. Charitable Gift Annuities – This is a wonderful way to make a meaningful gift to the Center while enjoying income and tax benefits that can also help enhance your future financial well-being. When making a charitable gift of cash or other property, you— or another person you designate—receives fixed payments that will continue regardless of how long you or your designee live. Charitable Trusts – If you are interested in making a substantial gift to the Center over a period of years, consider making us a beneficiary of a charitable trust, whereby assets are transferred to a trust that pays income to the Center for a predetermined number of years. At the end of that period, the assets are returned to you or other persons you name including the Center. Retained Life Estate – Using a life estate arrangement, you can make a real estate gift to the Center now but retain the security of knowing you may live there or own the property as long as you wish. By gifting the property by deed, it does not pass through your probate estate at death, possibly saving unnecessary expenses and delays. Insurance Proceeds – One of the simplest ways to make a significant gift to ACC is to name it as the recipient of all or a portion of the proceeds of a life insurance policy. In this way, you can ensure a gift that may ultimately be larger than its cost.

EXPENDITURES – The Anne Carlsen Center believes in using the most cost-effective and responsible methods for spending on programs, infrastructure and administration. Our passion and purpose revolve around those we serve, with new programs and projects serving as investments in the care we provide to students and clients. The growing needs of individuals and their families has been the driving force behind ACC’s growth over the past year, and will continue to transform the way we deliver services in the years to come. The following are some of the life-changing programs and services that donor support has helped make possible. Community Based Services – ACC assists individuals with disabilities and their families in building lives of dignity, independence and well-being. We provide services in the home through customized supports for individuals from birth to age 21. For adults, we create a unique plan for independence, vocational skill development and community involvement. Our investment in providing these communitybased services has meant the addition of offices and staff in Fargo, Grand Forks and Devils Lake, in addition to Jamestown. This year ACC will open another Community Based Services office in Bismarck.

KIDS Infant Development Program – The KIDS Program is an early-intervention, home-based service for children from birth to age three. Our staff helps identify learning opportunities in the home and natural environment, and provides support, instruction and resources. We empower parents and caregivers to help their child learn and develop to his or her full potential. Resource Center – As ACC has grown in size and expertise, we recognize that the needs of some individuals are best served outside of our Jamestown Campus. Through our newly developed Resource Center, we seek to share our staff’s expertise with other professionals and families in an effort to improve the lives of others. The Resource Center offers diagnostic services; an evaluation team; training, education, and conferences; and a variety of additional assistance options for families, guardians and professional caregivers. Technology – In 2011, the Anne Carlsen Center made a significant investment in placing new technology tools in the hands of the individuals we serve. The equipment we utilize throughout ACC helps children and young adults develop critical skills for everyday tasks. From mainstream consumer devices—like the iPad—to voice activated computers, we actively look for ways to enhance the lives of those we serve. Technology investments in 2011 included: • iPads • SMART Boards and TAP-it interactive learning stations • Specialized education software • Specially equipped vehicles for accessible transportation • Specialized curriculum including CARD Skills® Autism Services – The Anne Carlsen Center is always looking to the future and the potential need for additional services to better serve our clients. Research indicates the need for autism services is increasing in North Dakota and all across the United States. In 2011, ACC devoted significant resources to developing and expanding programs designed to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families enjoy lives of quality and learning at home, at school, and in the community. Extended Services – In May 2011, ACC served 874 individuals. A year later, that number increased to 1,244. Our growth in services has also meant growth in staff. In addition to our well-established campus in Jamestown, we are now providing critical services in many corners of the state. We take pride in the professionals and caregivers who all contribute to continuing the legacy started by Dr. Anne Carlsen. We have added training initiatives and programs such as the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) program, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), and course work through the College of Direct Support (CDS).

2011 SUMMARY – As you can see, donors to the Anne Carlsen Center are vital in helping us accomplish our mission. Your gifts—in the form of contributions, memorials and bequests/ trusts—empower us to provide quality services and programs, and remain on the cutting-edge of service delivery and technologies. As the Center continues to expand and enhance our services, your generosity is nurturing abilities and changing lives. We are extremely grateful for the many individuals who believe in our mission to make the world a more inclusive place where independence is a gift to all.
