Experience the brilliance of Narong Prangcharoen’s Raging Fire, followed by Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor - his only concerto, performed by the celebrated violinist Elissa Lee Koljonen. With the moniker Pathétique, Tchaikovsky’s final symphony is overflowing with emotion, and is the piece he termed “the best thing I have composed.” It represents the heights of his achievement as a composer. Our stage will be filled with our finest. We bring this to you with a passion that drives us all.

Elizabeth Richebourg Rea, in honoring the legacy of her father as co-founder and first board president of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, has created her own legacy with the ASO. Her continued support, beginning with the largest single gift in the history of the orchestra for the 50th Anniversary Season in 2011, has been noted as transformational in inspiring future donations of substantial amounts, in addition to gifts by pledge over multiple years. She has pioneered new levels of giving and today an expanded ASO continues to thrive to greater heights. Elizabeth is sponsor of the The Artistic Director and Conductor’s Chair in her father’s name and in addition is the founding member of the annual Philip Richebourg Encore Circle.

My father Philip Richebourg conducted his own orchestra every day of his life.

He personified exactitude and precision in business; in service to his community and in leadership on numerous Boards. He was meticulous in his passions as pilot, musician, archivist. Dedicated to each task at hand my father approached all things in life as if resolute in achieving one goal, that of perfect harmony.

Elizabeth Richebourg Rea is a fine art photographer and curator. Rea’s art career began in the 1970s working for The Museum of Modern Art and Leo Castelli. Curator of numerous exhibitions of Joseph Cornell, she was also catalogue editor and research consultant for two Roy Lichtenstein Museum Retrospectives. Elizabeth is President of the Dungannon Foundation, sponsor of The Rea Award for the Short Story. She is active on the Peggy Guggenheim Advisory Board in Venice and is Honorary Trustee of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Elizabeth Rea lives in Connecticut.

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is indebted to Philip Richebourg, Co-Founder and First Board President (1967-1974). Philip Richebourg’s stalwart support, organizational vision and strong leadership during its formative years helped solidify the orchestra financially and administratively, ensuring its longevity and signature as one of Maryland’s most distinguished performing arts organizations. Philip passionately supported the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra as it sought to enrich the lives of the community through classical music and educational programs. Raging Fire NARONG PRANGCHAROEN Born Jul. 23, 1973, Pha Chuk Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen has a history with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, while still a DMA composition student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he won the Annapolis Charter 300 Young Composers Competition with the piece Tri-Sattawat (Three Centuries). The piece fittingly celebrated the tricentennial of Annapolis with references to the Revolutionary War while also speaking to Prangcharoen’s own Thai history with influences from sacred Na Phat music. This fusion of cultures is typical in Prangcharoen’s compositions, which seek to bridge the cultures of Thailand, East Asia, and Western classical art music.

While growing up in Thailand, Prangcharoen taught himself piano and played trumpet in the school marching band and wind ensemble. He received his music education degree from Srinakharinwirot University

in Bangkok, where he also studied piano and music theory under pianist Kit Young. Prangcharoen eventually switched his concentration to piano though the stress of the performance lifestyle led him to turn to composition, with which he had some practice from occasionally doing arrangements. After taking private composition lessons in Thailand, he received his graduate degrees in the United States. This global education, and especially his studies at UMKC under Chinese-American composer Chen Yi, helped to create his compositional style that pulls from many cultures.

Raging Fire, composed in 2018 and commissioned by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, takes inspiration from an element that is present in every culture. Prangcharoen notes the universal use of fire and its power, used for both good and destruction, throughout the world. In his own program note to the piece, Prangcharoen describes how the piece is a study of fire’s effects: [Raging Fire] is inspired by the relationship between human[s] and fire. Fire can give warmth but on the other hand can be dangerous; [it] depends on how you deal with it. In meditation, if you put fire in your heart, you will not be able to find your inner peace. In motivation, if you put fire in your heart, you will have endless energy to drive yourself further and [get] better. […] The piece focus[es] on the contrast between the destructive heat of fire and the comfort[able] warm[th] of fire to show both side[s] that [affect] human life […]

This duality is audible in the music; the piece begins with the loud, fast sixteenth notes in the full orchestra, rising in pitch to imitate a rush of fire.

The mix of octatonic, whole tone, and tritone harmonies create a frenzied atmosphere. Prangcharoen explores the timbral potential of the orchestra, calling for trumpet mutes, bowed cymbals, sliding glissandos in the strings, and the French horns to alternate stopped and open hand positions. He also asks musicians to play out of sync with each other, giving performers improvisatory freedom that is typical in his compositions. The more meditative qualities of fire are then explored in the repetitive woodwind solos, floating above the timbral experimentations of the strings and brass. As the piece comes to a close, the orchestra’s chords build in volume, and it returns to the fiery rhythms of the opening.

Prangcharoen describes the end as “[the] great power of fire as if the entire world is burning, but all the mankind [sic] will somehow survive from [sic] this great power and will somehow find the inner peace.”

Violin Concerto in D minor, op. 47 JEAN SIBELIUS Born Dec. 8, 1865, Hämeenlinna Died Sep. 20, 1957, Järvenpää Born Johan Julius Christian, Sibelius lost his father when just three years old. The family was forced to rely on extended relations for support, and it is through the close relationships with his family that Sibelius first learned to love music; his uncle Pehr was an amateur violinist and was a strong influence on the young Sibelius. He did not begin formal music lessons until age 15, when he began studying violin; his earliest compositions are also from this time. In 1885 Sibelius moved to the capital to study violin at the new Helsinski Music Institute, though he would turn his attention to composition while a student. It was during his time at the Music Institute that Sibelius

PROGRAM NOTES continued assumed the name Jean as his “musicname.” After graduation, Sibelius honed his compositional skills in Europe and became increasingly influenced

by Finnish language and history, an interest that would eventually lead him to become a musical figurehead of Finnish nationalism.

Even while establishing himself as a composer, Sibelius still aspired to be a performing violinist, even auditioning for the Vienna Philharmonic. His oeuvre contains several works for violin, indicating his preference for the instrument, and he had ideas for a violin concerto over a decade before starting its composition. Sibelius started writing the Violin Concerto—the only concerto he would compose—by September 1902, after having met the violin virtuoso Carl Adolph Wilhelm Burmester that summer. The initial plan to have Burmester premiere the work fell through when the date was moved up, and instead Victor Nováček premiered the Concerto in Helsinki in February 1904. Famously, Sibelius pulled the work after its unsuccessful first performance, completing revisions in 1905 before the second premiere in Berlin by Karl Halir, under the baton of Richard Strauss, in October 1905.

serves as the movement’s development section. Interestingly, the original (1904) version of the concerto had two cadenzas in the first movement; one was cut during the revision process, perhaps because it was more in the style of Bach and seemingly written for Burmester, who would in the end never perform the work.

After the furious close of the first movement, the Adagio di molto second movement’s singing melody provides a contrast. The orchestra builds in tension and volume, and the solo violin takes over to demonstrate technical and lyrical mastery. For example, when the violin reenters, the theme features double-stops (playing two notes simultaneously) with different rhythms for the upper and lower registers, and the rest of the movement explores the full range of the instrument. The Allegro, ma non tanto third movement begins with fast rhythms in the timpani and strings. The solo violin enters with a sprightly tune reminiscent of a folk dance, again recalling Sibelius’s Finnish style. Throughout the movement, Sibelius seamlessly blends virtuosic lines for the violin into the main theme, allowing the solo instrument to shine even with a heavier orchestral presence.

The first note of the solo violin is offbeat and dissonant with the strings’ muted ostinato, the minor modality and timbral contrast quintessential features of the Finnish style that Sibelius helped to establish. After being echoed by the winds, the violin turns virtuosic, with rapid passagework highlighting the performer’s skill. An extended cadenza

those, especially Rubinstein, who did not want to grow a Russian musical culture in total isolation. At the same time, Tchaikovsky was also influenced by those, namely “The Five” (Modest Mussorgsky, César Cui, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Mily Balakirev), who wanted to reject all western influence.

Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 74, “Pathétique” PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Born May 7 (O.S. Apr. 25), 1840, Kamsko-Votkinsk Died Nov. 6 (O.S. Oct. 25), 1893, St. Petersburg Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky began piano lessons at age five and his parents, who had musical training themselves, encouraged music education, though they did not yet consider it to be a viable career. The status of music would change in Russia, and partly because of Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky was part of the inaugural class of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, founded

by Anton Rubinstein with the goal to increase and sustain a specifically Russian style of music. Tchaikovsky studied western styles and his own compositional style was influenced by

Symphony No. 6 in B minor is Tchaikovsky’s last complete symphony, written from February to April during the final year of his life. While sketching the symphony, he wrote to his nephew Vladimir Davydov—to whom the symphony is dedicated—that it would be called A Program Symphony, but that he would not disclose the program.

This riddle has remained a point of fascination, especially given the musical structure and the work’s coincidental connections to the composer’s death.

Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere on October 28, 1893, and the piece received mixed reviews. He became severely ill with an unknown sickness five days later and died on November 6. That night, Symphony No. 6 was performed again, this time with the subtitle of Symphonie Pathétique, which Tchaikovsky had added to the manuscript sometime in the last five days. This second performance, the day of the composer’s death, was a resounding success and many viewed Symphony No. 6 as the Tchaikovsky’s swan song, or even suicide note. Rumors abound regarding Tchaikovsky’s death and its ties to this work, yet assigning this meaning to the piece ultimately clouds fact and fiction.

PROGRAM NOTES continued The symphony is in four movements but deviates from the standard symphonic structure by having a slow—not fast— final movement, a feature that has given fodder to the ideas that Tchaikovsky was foreshadowing his death. In the first movement, the introductory bassoon solo alludes to Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Pathétique” sonata for piano, providing a musical connection for the symphony’s added subtitle. This melody speeds up and becomes the first theme of the sonata form. Rocking cellos transition to a lush second theme in the strings, supported by brass chords. Throughout the first movement, Tchaikovsky uses rhythms found in the panikhida, the chant used in the Eastern Orthodox memorial service. The second movement is reminiscent of a waltz,

though slightly off-kilter with a 5/4 time signature. Rapid, staccato dance rhythms in the third movement create an atmosphere of joy. Swirling strings, bright brass, and rolling timpani bring the movement to a triumphant close, as if it were the finale. The Adagio lamentoso fourth movement begins with a weeping theme in the strings, passed down to the bassoons before the tutti orchestra crescendos to an intense, yearning climax. After a pianissimo low brass chorale, the theme descends through the orchestra. The cellos and basses close the piece, slowing down and fading to silence.

panish-born José-Luis Novo has instilled a new and vibrant artistic vision into the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra since his appointment as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Maryland-based symphony in 2005. Highlights of Novo’s tenure include numerous appearances at the Music Center at Strathmore with violinists James Ehnes, Anne Akiko Meyers, Leticia Moreno, and Chee-Yun, pianist Olga Kern, late cellist Lynn Harrell, guitarist Manuel Barrueco,

pipa virtuoso Wu Man, and the Naval Academy Glee Club. Also remarkable are a 2012 return appearance at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, national broadcasts on NPR’s Performance Today, debut TV broadcasts on Washington’s WETA Metro PBS, the launching of the ASO’s award-winning streaming platform Symphony+, the creation of the Annapolis Symphony Academy, and the ASO’s first commercial CD commemorating the 300th anniversary

of the signing of the City of Annapolis’ Royal Charter. In July of 2022, Maestro Novo and the ASO stunned audiences on both sides of the Atlantic in a debut international tour to Spain with guitar virtuoso Pepe Romero as guest soloist.

In addition to his directorship of the ASO, Maestro Novo held an impressive thirteen-year tenure as Music Director and Conductor of the Binghamton Philharmonic in New York state from 2003 to 2016. Prior to this, he served as Assistant Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under both late Music Director Emeritus Jesús LópezCobos and former Music Director Paavo Järvi, and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the late Erich Kunzel.

Recent and upcoming guest conducting engagements include debut appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Grand Rapids, Hilton Head, Palm Beach, Alexandria, and South Bend Symphony Orchestras, and return appearances with the Baltimore Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, Symphoria, and a Kimmel Center debut in Philadelphia conducting the Curtis Institute Orchestra. After a successful debut with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) for the Thailand International Composition Festival in 2015, Maestro Novo has been invited back regularly to guest conduct the TPO on several occasions. Other guest conducting engagements have included appearances with the Symphony Silicon Valley; the Minnesota Orchestra; the Syracuse, Modesto, Windsor, Stamford, Tulsa, and Tallahassee Symphonies; the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra; the Cleveland and Abilene Philharmonics; and most of the major Spanish orchestras.

CONDUCTOR continued José-Luis Novo has also fostered a reputation as a keen educator of young musicians. He has held conducting positions with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Miami University Symphony Orchestra, and National Repertory Orchestra, and has been on the conducting faculty at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina since 1999. In addition, he has conducted many noteworthy college and youth orchestras such as the Curtis Institute Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, the Bard Conservatory Orchestra, the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, and the Portuguesa State Youth Orchestra of the Venezuelan El Sistema. Under the auspices of the Annapolis Symphony

Academy, he presided over the debut of its Orion Youth Orchestra, conducting the inaugural concert in June 2022.

Maestro Novo was featured in the League of American Orchestras Symphony magazine in “Podium Powers,” an article about emerging Hispanic conductors in the United States of America. He holds music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Yale University, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, and is the recipient of a 2010 Annie Award in Performing Arts from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, a 2008 American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Adventurous Programming Award, and a 2005 Broome County Arts Council Heart of the Arts Award.

ecognized as one of the most celebrated violinists of her generation, Elissa Lee Koljonen has thrilled audiences and critics in more than one hundred cities throughout the world. Ms. Koljonen received international acclaim when she became the first recipient of the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Award and the silver medalist of the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition. Her playing has been hailed by the Helsingin Sanomat (Helsinki) as “sparkling, sensual, and personal,” and the Chicago Tribune has said she displays “boundless technique and musicianship.”

Ms. Koljonen has performed with such orchestras as the Boston Pops, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the symphony orchestras of Bilbao, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Helsinki, and Seoul. She garnered critical acclaim for her appearance with the Orchestre Philharmonique de MonteCarlo in a special concert celebrating the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi Dynasty. She has collaborated with such noted conductors as Matthias Bamert, Dirk Brossé, JoAnn Falletta, Lawrence Foster, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Neeme Järvi, James Judd, Andrew Litton, José-Luis Novo, the late James DePreist, and the late Bryden Thomson.

Ms. Koljonen has performed in some of the world’s most venerated concert venues, including the Musikverein in Vienna, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Barbican Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Konzerthaus Berlin, Seoul Arts Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Symphony Hall in Boston, and the Academy of Music and Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. An avid chamber musician, Ms. Koljonen appears regularly at festivals throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

Ms. Koljonen is a protégée of the late Aaron Rosand, with whom she studied at the Curtis Institute of Music. Incorporating his influence, she carries on the legacy and tradition of Leopold Auer and his legendary school of violin playing.

Welcome from the Annapolis Symphony Academy!

By now you may be familiar with the Annapolis Symphony Academy, the largest investment of the ASO in the community and one of the more groundbreaking initiatives in the country due to its unique mission and structure.

The future of the Academy is now our main focus.

The base on which the program is built is incredibly strong and will sustain the short term growth of the program for the coming few years. A wider, institutional view is needed as the Academy is transitioning from an after-school program to a fully staffed music school, an exciting transition to undertake. In the next couple of years you will see an expansion in student numbers, new instruments in our private lesson program, locations, administrative staff, faculty, outreach performances, and most importantly the impact of the Academy in our community.

We are grateful to you, and our Annapolis community for supporting the Academy and Symphony. We are also immensely grateful to the generous donors that make it possible for the Academy to be a beacon for other programs around the country.

If there is one thing I can leave you with is: your voice matters! riends of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra was established in 1964 to support the ASO. Our work also supports the Annapolis Symphony Academy. FASO members volunteer their time at events, at outreach programs and musician auditions, and in general, promote community awareness of the Orchestra while building lasting relationships among fellow music lovers. This winter, FASO donated $12,000 to the ASO with a check we presented to Maestro Novo at the Holiday Pops concert.

Celebrate 60!

We invite you to celebrate FASO’s 60th anniversary at our French Country Evening at Le Salon de Heron Bleu (the Blue Heron Room) in Quiet Waters Park on April 27th. For so long, the country of France has inspired art, literature and music.

When we think of France, we think of romance and passion.

The cities, towns, and villages have that je ne sais quoi feeling that makes you want to linger and soak in the memory. Since we can’t all go to France, she will have to come to us. Ah, mes amis, let us together sip champagne and wine, and taste délicieuse food that warms the soul in celebration of FASO! Apres-diné, enjoy French pastries and cognac. We’ll sway with the beat of les chansons francaises, be it the Piaf crooning, the accordion-fueled musette, or the jazz band, we will all surely be delighted. Trip to Santa Fe

What is an anniversary without a trip? As a special anniversary treat, FASO added a domestic tour to its annual international trip. On May 15th we are taking in the magic of Santa Fe for a 6-day tour, where we’ll visit homes of Georgia O’Keefe, Spanish settlers, and the Pueblo People.

Of course, there will be music: two private concerts and Beethoven’s 9th by the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra. The trip is accompanied by Jonathan Palevsky, Program Director at WBJC.

Glyndebourne Festival

In August, we’ll cross the pond to England for the Glyndebourne Festival in the seaside town of Sussex. We’re in line for tickets to the BBC Proms Classical Music Festival held in Royal Albert Hall, London. Space is limited to 15 travelers only. Details will be available in March. One thing is for certain, this trip definitely Doubles the Harmony and is one you want to be on! Maestro José-Luis Novo and Jonathan Palevsky will provide insights and commentaries throughout our time in the United Kingdom.

Subscribers may exchange their tickets for the alternate performance of the same concert only. Exchanges are subject to availability.
