Welcome to In Retrospective Forethought
, the Cornell Fashion Collective’s 39th Annual Spring Runway Show. We invite you to enter into this mindscape of fashion, where you will watch our designers’ creations reminisce of the past while moving forward to forge new ideas. Our first level designers will take you through their revamp of the history of fashion, to the suggestion of its future by our second level designers. The show will end with our third and fourth level designers’ individual collections, which you can read about in the following pages.
About CFC
The Cornell Fashion Collective, formerly the Cornell Design League, is a student-run organization that provides members of the Cornell community with an outlet to express creativity in fashion, management, and event production. Since its founding in 1984, our organization presents a professional runway show each spring, featuring the talent of students who both design apparel and manage the operations of the show. CFC has grown to have over 180 members representing all 7 of Cornell’s undergraduate colleges and 2 graduate colleges.

Mel Harlie Miller, In the Absence of Scarlet

This final year collection accompanies a study on the paradigm of sex and violence throughout classic cinema; and, the relative degrees of femininity. Allow your imagination to roam along themes of curiosity, temptation, subversion, crimes of passion, corruption, distortion… Classic cinema has, since the beginning, glorified patterns surrounding violence, enabling a rather seductive nature and ambience. This is where her research begins.
Maisie McDonald, Convergence by Play

Experimental knitwear designer who plays with color, soft sculpture, and unique textures
Yuchen Jessie Jiang, Recognization

Yuchen Jessie Jiang has interests in couture womenswear and virtual fashion, and hopes to integrate in her American Chinese cultural background, along with her passions in graphic design, photography, and fine art. Her design philosophy is to push people to accept themselves in whatever form that means to them. Through her clothing, she is taking the steps to find and create her own identity, free from societal standards and expectations.

Nadine El Nesr, The Day is a Dream, The Night is Real

Nadine is a high-fashion luxury designer creating innovative pieces that seamlessly blend techniques of sculpting, art-making, draping, and design practices. Her latest collection is inspired by the captivating allure of the night and incorporates a sleek sportswear aesthetic blended with an avant-garde twist. With unwavering attention to detail and a drive to push boundaries, each piece is a stunning representation that reflects her unique perspective and vision, curated to leave a dramatic and lasting impression.
Alli H Park, Second Skin

Inspired by the cyclical relationship between feminine freedom and lingerie, Second Skin aims to re-contextualize the skin through representation of the dynamic struggle for autonomy suffused by love, lust, betrayal, rejection, loneliness, and alienation in the truth.
Those bearing feminine bodies are forced into a narcissistic relationship with society, by society. Those who defy are judged. Those who conform are rewarded with a sickly “love,” consisting of obsession, objectification, violation.
Embrace effortful beauty: the perfect truth is gained by clawing through the dirt and the muck of hypocrisy, control, and social acceptance, the opiate of the masses.

Katherine Hogan, The evolution and distillation of 1950s era fashion: in comparison and contrast of the New Look

Katherine plans to pursue a career in bridal following her graduation this year, so for her final collection She has designed a line of bridal wear. The collection consists of 6 pieces and features hand stitched appliqués, embellishments, and beadwork. The inspiration stems from the 1950s shifts in fashion, and the evolution to modern looks.
Aidan Collins, Gregowicz
His menswear collection—combining American Western motifs with European refinement—is solely composed of leather, silk, and wool. Many of the garments experienced a series of chemical treatments to impart specific aesthetic finishes. Dedicated to Collins’ grandfather.
