Mayoral candidates speak out

ANNA MARIA – A second request for proposals (RFP) for the construction of the Anna Maria City Pier has been issued, and city officials have decided to purchase the spun concrete pier pilings directly. During the City Commission’s Sept. 13 meeting, Mayor Dan Murphy said Oct. 5 is the deadline for construction firms to submit their pier proposals. “We’ve already gotten some feedback from some new people who are extremely interested in bidding. Some of them are rather large companies that do work world-wide, so that’s encouraging,” Murphy told the commission. The new RFP was issued earlier this month after the original RFP produced only two bids – both of which exceeded the $2.5 million Murphy and the commission anticipated spending on the construction of the pier platform. In response to the original RFP, Speeler & Associates, the firm that demolished the old pier, bid $3.72 million. I+iconsoutheast, the firm building the new pier in St. Petersburg, bid $4.13 million. The construction specifications were then modified in the second RFP in hopes of lowering the cost without impacting the quality of the pier to SEE PILINGS, PAGE 31

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE JOB OF THE MAYOR?

Linney: “The job of the mayor is to dutifully execute the will of the commission and represent the city in a legal capacity. I think that I am pretty much trying to mimic

that now without even having been elected.” Titsworth: “The mayor is the chief executive officer of the city, and he’s administrator of all the SEE MAYOR, PAGE 33
