Holmes Beach by boat, planning on spending the day rescuing pelicans. In a strange turn of events, they also wound up rescuing U.S. mail that had flown out of a semi-trailer that had been struck by a waterspout while on the Skyway Bridge.

The tractor-trailer was northbound on I-275 on a lower portion of bridge when the waterspout struck between 9:45 and 10 a.m. The trailer was heavily damaged, but its driver, Randall Leaver, suffered only minor bruises. see twister, page 38

HOLMES BEACH – Dignitaries will gather on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 9:30 a.m. to break ground on Mainsail Lodging and Development’s new Waterline Marina Resort at 5325 Marina Drive, near the intersection of Marina and Gulf drives.

The ceremony, which is invitation-only, will featuring local officials and development partners speaking about the project, as well as entertainment and refreshments. The ceremony will include comments

Bayfest activities at Roser The 100-year-old Roser Memorial Chapel will be open on Saturday, Oct. 17, during Bayfest. At 10:30 a.m. the Roser Chancel Choir will sing, at 11:30 a.m. the Grace Notes Trio will perform and at 12:30 the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir will sing. All children are invited to explore the Children’s Tent and enjoy free crafts, games, and snacks.

Roser Pastor Dr. Bob O’Keef will sign his book, “Through the Crystal Snow,” outside the Chapel. The cost is $20.

The book is set in 1806, when Robert Tyler, a successful North Carolina planter, businessman, and politician, learns that he is both the father of an adult son he has never met and that he is the target of an assassination plot.

Pine Avenue will be closed off to traffic during the free festival to make room for vendors offering one-of-a-kind gift items, jewelry, local artists’ works, collectable items, T-shirts, island crafts, gifts and more.

Music begins at 10 a.m. with emcee Mike Sales, followed by Can’t Turn Left from 11 a.m. to noon, Billy Rice from 1-2:30 p.m., Whiskey Blind from 3-5 p.m., Koko Ray from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Shotgun Justice (The Karen and Jimmy Band) from 8-10 p.m.

in brief Deputy clerk resigns

Deputy Clerk Emily Long quit Monday morning.

According to Mayor Jack Clarke, Long was scheduled for a disciplinary hearing with the mayor and the city attorney Monday morning, but the city attorney was unable to attend and the hearing was postponed.

According to City Clerk Teri Sanclemente, Long then informed her she was quitting. Sanclemente said she wrote Long up on Wednesday, Oct. 7, for failing to perform her job duties; which included not publically noticing several city meetings that had to be rescheduled.

The manner in which Long expressed her displeasure with Sanclemente the following day led to the disciplinary hearing. In an effort to bring this matter to a formal conclusion, a disciplinary hearing was rescheduled for Tuesday.

DEP receives plans for seagrape incident The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has received the consent order detailing required proposed vegetation and lighting plans and payment of a $1,0000 administrative penalty in the case of illegal sea grape trimming in the 4300 block of Second Avenue.

In May, Jose Vivero, the property owner across the street, hired a tree service to trim the sea grape trees located along the beach access and the neighboring property without permission from the city or the neighboring property owner. The DEP investigated and issued a consent order to outlining action Vivero must take to resolve the issue.

Roadwork continues on Island There are several projects to watch out for on the Island this week. Florida Power and Light crews will be tying in existing power lines to new power poles along SR 789 (Gulf Drive) from SR 684 (Cortez Road) to SR 64 (Manatee Avenue West). Various locations will be closed from now through Oct. 16.

Crews are constructing sidewalk and new bus shelters, making drainage improvements, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect daytime lane closures and flagging operations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Gulf Drive from 27th Street to Manatee Avenue West.

The Florida Department of Transportation is making improvements to State Road 789/Gulf Drive from the Longboat Key Bridge to 13th Street South in Bradenton Beach. Crews are edging and sweeping the bike lanes.

Expect intermittent north and southbound lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Tuesday, Oct. 13. Motorists and bicyclists should use caution and expect possible delays.

Mayoral candidates share their views

The mayor and the former mayor air their contrasting views.

First of two parts BRADENTON BEACH – Mayor Jack Clarke and former Mayor Bill Shearon did not participate in the recent candidates’ forum, but they each agreed to answer the following questions submitted by The Sun. The candidates for the two-year mayor’s term that will be decided in the city elections that conclude on Tuesday, Nov. 3, were provided with the same questions and given a week to respond in writing. Their responses are being printed verbatim, other than being edited for length.

When city voters cast their votes, why should they vote for you instead of your opponent?

CLARKE: I have provided an effective and cohesive work environment for city employees. Employees who did not see the value in my approach are now former employees by resignation or termination.

I have stepped up and faced long ignored items such as the BP oil spill money and addressing the anchorage situation. Stormwater projects are back on line, we are truly lawsuit free and legal bills have plummeted.”

SHEARON: Our citizens are being ignored. My opponent has had two general citizen meetings at which the citizens have raised their wishes on the moratorium and the vacation rental problem. Each time the mayor has rejected the citizen’s consensus and pursued his own agenda, not that of the people.

What is your approach to regulating the vacation rental industry in Bradenton Beach?

SHEARON: I have and will listen to the citizens and will support their views. This is a democracy not a monarchy. I would attack the party

house problem by advocating a moratorium against large houses to give us time to enact a thoughtful, effective ordinance while utilizing the wisdom and experi- Clarke ence of Holmes Beach and Anna Maria.

Expand enforcement of our current ordinances on noise and parking especially on weekends and at night when most of the Shearon complaints are being made and enforcement is not available currently. Code enforcement should be made more proactive than reactive.

Create an ordinance that balances the property rights of the owner with the rights of citizens to enjoy their neighborhoods, without burdening the mom and pop rentals that have existed in the past, without creating the problems of these big party houses now being built and run by non-resident investors.

CLARKE: We need a quality of life ordinance to tie all our assorted ordinances together to address citizen concerns with transient public lodging establishments.

Enforcement: Chief Speciale has clearly stated what he needs to have to ensure compliance. We need to provide the police department and code enforcement with the necessary tools.

Accountability: Uniform standards and conditions of operation of transient lodging establishments.

Process: Follow-up by the city to ensure constant and consistent application of the ordinance.

SHEARON: I strongly support a moratorium. A moratorium will be on my first agenda when I am elected. The current rush to create a new ordinance without due diligence and the opportunity of the citizens to express their views will only lead to further problems and litigation. Let’s do it right when we have breathing time while delaying the influx of these large party houses.

Do you feel City Clerk Terri Sanclemente is qualified to hold that position and how would you rate her performance since being promoted from Clerk Pro Tem to City Clerk?

CLARKE: Yes. Excellent. Over and above the call of duty despite personal and professional pressure from outside the city that amounts to character assassination. Ms. Sanclemente’s dedication to Bradenton Beach and her ability to excel in her very demanding job are amazing. We are fortunate to have here.

SHEARON: Terri currently lacks the credentials according to the employee handbook and base education required of a credentialed city clerk. She was just given a $20,000 dollar raise, not including benefits, without any achievements made towards obtaining a clerk’s certification. Currently, she has been put over department heads with college degrees, certifications, and expertise that she does not share and has had no significant management experience to justify such a position.

Do you support or oppose a temporary building moratorium in the residential districts?

Do you feel the city treasurer should report to the city clerk or CLARKE: In general I do not support legislation that denies citizens serve as an independent departtheir property rights. because of deficiencies and material weaknesses pointed out in previous city audits.

This insures accountability. The city clerk does not have the qualifications to oversee the accounting and budget processes, much less the building and planning departments as it is currently structured.

CLARKE: “City treasurer is in actuality a title for one employee, not a department.

Best practices indicate there should be a certain separation within the administration section regarding signing of checks, accounts payable, and receivables. Common sense dictates that there is only room for one boss when there’s only four employees in the administration department.

The city clerk is not expected to oversee the nuts and bolts of the treasurer's job, but there needs to be a competent knowledgeable person, the clerk, to insure that statutory deadlines and required paperwork is transmitted in a timely fashion.

This month the city paid over $1,700 in penalties and fines based on reporting and submission errors by the treasurer during the previous administration. Records indicate that two staff members who have since resigned were well aware of this and deliberately remained silent on the subject to avoid being caught.

What your thoughts on the 201516 budget compared to the 2014-15 budget and the manner in which each of you as mayor guided the budget process?

CLARKE: As the new mayor I directed staff to follow all the previous years’ procedures in constructing the budget. It was only after the abrupt departure of the treasurer that questions arose about the process. Despite this, all deadlines were met and all applicable statutes and regulations were satisfied.

I put forth, and commission approved, an operating budget with the least shortfall – the difference between income and expense – in recent memory, with approximately one-quarter of the previous budget shortfall established by my predecessor. This is not a deficit budget. A deficit budget is one wherein you owe third party debt, as in money borrowed to cover your shortfall.

SHEARON: My budget process was a six-month public meeting and commission committee process. The current budget process had no committee meetings or the opportunity for public involvement.

The mayor, without commission, filed the

notice of the proposed tax increase from last year. The only city budget workshop was for a 3 percent wage increase without the opportunity for public comment. The approved budget with increased tax revenue continues to be balanced with deficit spending using city reserves. To continue deficit spending will be unacceptable in my future budget proposal to commission.

What can and should be done to better manage the anchorage area?

SHEARON: The strict enforcement of maritime laws, on a regular schedule, should be developed. Vessels with derelict registration need to be removed. We need to develop a plan for a controlled anchorage.

CLARKE: This issue has been under study for years. Recently I have reinstituted frequent enforcement activities with positive results. Proposed changes in FDEP regulation of anchorage/mooring fields may allow us to go forward with plans I have had under discussion for some time.

Autumn fun at Bayfest

O

ne of Manatee County's premier festivals takes place on Anna Maria Island this Saturday. For many on the Island, Bayfest signals the beginning of the best time of year to live here, with cooler weather flowing in and a slower pace taking over day-to-day activities.

Mother Nature may not provide us with the blazing fall foliage and dramatic dip in temperatures found further north, but her subtle influence each October is surely a welcome one, regardless.

As for Bayfest, it has evolved from humble beginnings as a strictly fine art festival 15 years ago, to an allinclusive autumn celebration with something for just about everyone.

High on any list of top attractions has to be the wonderful cuisine offered up from a wide variety of local restaurants. Everything from fish tacos and fresh grouper to hot dogs and hamburgers can be found in the food court, all of which can be washed down with the beverage of your choice, including some concoctions made specially for the festival.

he music menu traditionally has been every bit as tasty as the food, and this year is no exception.

Beginning at 10 a.m. and going all day, the list of bands is like a who's who of local performers, including Koko Ray Hansen, Billy Rice, Shotgun Justice, Can't Turn Left, Whiskey Blind and Mike Sales.

The classic car show is always a crowd favorite and features plenty of vintage American muscle, restored to pristine condition and the envy of anyone who ever owned a '65 Mustang or '68 Camaro.

When you add in all of the arts, crafts, one-of-a-kind items and an expanded Kids Zone full of games for the little ones, Bayfest really does have something for the whole family to enjoy.

Parking close to Pine Avenue is limited and gets harder to find as the day unfolds. People are encouraged to park at CrossPointe Fellowship or Manatee Public Beach Park and then take the free trolley up to Pine. The trolleys run until 10:30 p.m.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Carter responds

As a candidate for re-election to the office of commissioner in the city of Anna Maria I was surprised to see the AMI Sun publish a campaign advertisement in the Letters to the Editor section in the Oct. 7 issue.

I assume you also will publish my response to John Damato’s letter.

Mr. Damato alleged a number of actions by someone he called CC. As my initials are CC, I can only assume he was accusing me. I want to be very clear here; although I was aware of the controversy swirling around his candidacy, including his Homestead claim, I took no action.

Period. I have chosen to be positive and focus on my message as to why my experience and knowledge make me the preferred candidate.

Since Mr. Damato opened the door to this conversation I will point out the following: Sections 193.155 (9) and 196.161 of the Florida Statutes: Owners who intentionally cheat on Homestead and other exemptions will have a tax lien placed against their properties, be back taxed for up to 10 years (as applicable), be required to pay a substantial penalty (50 percent of the unpaid taxes for each year) and pay an interest rate of 15 percent per year The violation listed first in the statute is: 1) The owner(s) claim Homestead exemption, but perma-

nent residence is elsewhere.

If this sounds familiar, it should; it is exactly what Mr. Damato states he did. This is all the more egregious as he is a licensed real estate agent.

Shouldn’t he know the Homestead laws? As a former officer of the law, shouldn’t he be abiding by state and local laws?

My decision to run for re-election is based upon my belief that everyone should have a voice in the city’s future, not just the investors.

Residents need to be heard and have someone to speak for them. I have been that person and will continue to be that person. And, I will do so while honoring and obeying the laws.

Help fight cancer Last week, I traveled to Washington, D.C., with more than 750 of my fellow American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) volunteers from across the country to urge Congress to support lifesaving policies that help people prevent and fight cancer. I called on lawmakers to increase federal funding for cancer research, co-sponsor legislation to improve patient quality of life and remove cost barriers to colorectal cancer screenings for seniors.

When I met with Representa-

tive Vern Buchanan and others in Congress, I told them that Congress should seize these opportunities to put partisanship aside and make defeating cancer a top national priority.

I let our lawmakers know that people and families touched by cancer in Florida and across the country are counting on them to support legislation that would help make cancer history. With one in two men and one in three women being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, we can’t let another year pass without taking legislative action.

THE ISLAND – Island arts and culture groups are finalizing plans for the 2015 artsHOP celebration, which ushers in the Island’s arts and culture season.

Two events are set to kick off the weekend on Friday, Nov. 13.

Art galleries and shops in Anna Maria and Holmes Beach will host an Artwalk showcasing various artists and offering refreshments, prizes and live music from 5 to 8 p.m.

Symphony on the Sand to complement artsHOP Symphony on the Sand (SOS), a musical and gourmet event featuring the award-winning Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus & Orchestra (AMICCO) takes place on Nov. 14, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the beach at Coquina Gulfside Park, 2650 Gulf Drive S., Bradenton Beach.

SOS features a full 45-piece symphonic orchestra, chorus and professional soloists performing the sounds of classical and patriotic American songs, Broadway and movie selections, plus songs from the Beatles, Queen and Simon and Garfunkel. New market manager The seasonal Bridge Street Sunday Market will have a new manager when it resumes operations next month. Cindy Thompson is taking over for Melissa Enders, who managed the market for the past four years.

“I will miss my market family, but I’m still very involved with Bridge Street,” Enders said in a recent press release distributed by the not-for-profit Bridge Street Merchants association that hosts the weekly market.

“Events are what I really love to do most,” Thompson added.

She will have 23 weekly events to manage once the market season opens on Sunday, Nov. 15, and continues through the end of April.

Thompson was one of the original Bayfest organizers and helped turn that into one of the most popular festivals in all of Manatee County. She also opened Paradise Bagels with her mother, Jackie and helped organize the Concert in the Park music series in Holmes

Center’s art program to focus on kids and adults Kids will make art projects as part of the after school program, and adult classes will be in the evenings.

ANNA MARIA – “I saw a need,” artist Janet Kingan said about initiating an art program at the Community Center.

She said the conversation on developing the program began last year online, and when Cindy Thompson became director, it began to gel.

“She thought I needed a room dedicated to the purpose – a place where kids could leave their art projects to dry and we didn’t have to worry about getting paint on the floor. We looked around the Center and we found this room (a storage room off the gym).”

Center staff went to work cleaning out the room and saving anything that might be used for art projects. In addi-

tion, they brought art supplies found in other parts of the building for Kingan to organize and inventory.

“I began developing projects for the kids based on what I found,” she said.

Their first project was haunted houses now hanging in the after school area. Their second project, that they made last week, was colorful sun catchers, now displayed in the lobby.

“I love seeing the kids having fun,” she said. “It’s nice for them to come into a funky spot where music is playing and they can let their hair down and make things and not worry about making a mess. I want them to be excited about coming into the art room.”

She said future projects for kids include painting ghosts and making bloody eyeball masks from paper egg cartons, followed by a banner featuring portraits of themselves and a Thanksgiving project.

Center’s new logo, mission and vision unveiled A new simpler membership structure and new staff members were introduced.

ANNA MARIA – A large crowd came to the grand re-opening at the AMI Community Center last week to see the new and refreshed areas and the new logo, hear about the new membership structure and met the new staff members.

“Welcome. We’d like to see you here all the time and enjoy each other’s company,” Bill Shuman, chairman of the board said.

“We want to bring the community together. I think some of the changes we’ve made have done that.”

Executive Director Kristin Lessig told the group, “The vision is to rebuild the trust of the community in the Center. We believe we are the center of this Island, and we want to continue to serve it.

“Our mission is to be a place for the community to gather and make friends.

We want to grow that relationship with the community. We serve our local families and residents and are trying to meet all the needs in one building.”

Center staff goals are to create a family friendly atmosphere that is fun, safe and social; provide experiences that are welcoming and stimulating; offer healthy lifestyle programs and activities for all ages; and be a socially responsible member of the community.

Lessig said their values include being truthful, honest and well; bringing passion, energy, excitement; working together with each other and their partners and making a positive difference in the lives of staff, members and community.

“We have five focus areas based on a survey we did in July,” she said. “They are to deliver a consistent message, expand beyond the walls of the building, constantly re-evaluate our program structure, elevate our citizen engagement and develop partnerships with local businesses and non-profit organizations.”

Center treasurer reports financial results Community Center board treasurer Jim Froeschle reported the following for the month of August at the September board of directors meeting: • August revenues far exceeded plan and previous year levels due to strong membership revenues because the rental units renewed their memberships and the Center received a high level of private donations, primarily from board members in response to a matching gift program.

• Year to date showed a very strong start to membership revenues, which more than offset a slower than planned start to the sports program revenues and enabled total revenues to be above the budget plan YTD. However, total revenues were well below July-August period last year when large donations came in during the Save the Center campaign.

• Cost levels in August were well below the budget plan and below last year. The primary factor was low spending in the administrative/overhead area due to the timing of when expenses will occur on computer support and marketing.

• Year to date costs were well below the budget plan and slightly below last year.

• Net income in August showed a $12.7K gain, which is $47.3K better than budget and $58.7K better than last year.

• Net loss year to date was $11.8K, which is $49.9K better that budget, but $79.4K worse than last year.

Home True Value Hardware has been truly an Island business, serving customers for more than 60 years in the same location in the Island Shopping Center and under the ownership of Tony Caminite for the past 40 years.

“I often thought our motto should be, 'The need to satisfy the customer,' Caminite said, “because it’s all centered around Islanders and their needs.”

Caminite said the store’s first owner was a man named Mr. Dickey, who sold the business to Ernie Bradow, who in turn sold it to him.

“Ernie asked me to go fly fishing in Labrador, Canada, with him. It was there he said he wanted to sell the store and asked me if I wanted to buy it,” Caminite recalled. “We discussed it a couple of days while fishing, and I decided to buy it.”

Because he had other business interests, he asked his sister, Joan to manage the hardware store because she was able to manage the store while raising three kids. In 2000, Joan became ill and passed away, and Caminite sold his other interests and took over the store.

Carter named alumna of the year Commissioner Carol Carter has been recognized by her alma mater.

McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., recently named Anna Maria Commissioner Carol Carter as its Alumna of the Year for 2015.

Carter grew up in Maryland and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1969 from Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College. She was a Phi Alpha Mu sorority sister, a member of the Trumpeters leadership honor society and president of the Tri-Beta honor society.

In addition to serving as a city commissioner since 2013, Carter also works with her husband and his Bob Carter Companies, which is headquartered in Sarasota and provides fundraising counsel for non-profit organizations in the

United States, Mexico and Europe.

The self-described “small-town community activist� helped lead a successful recall of Anna Maria Commissioner Carter Harry Stoltzfus in 2011.

In 2014, she helped to establish the Anna Maria Island Women’s Giving Circle, a donoradvised fund of the Manatee Community Foundation.

She also serves on the Vestry, chairs the stewardship committee and is a member of the church rector search committee at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Holmes Beach.

Carter began her career in 1975 working at her alma mater as assistant director of development and alumni affairs. She moved to Pittsburgh in 1982 after accepting the

position of director of annual giving at Carnegie Mellon University, where she was later named associate vice president for development.

In 1996, Carter was named vice chancellor for institutional advancement at the University of Pittsburgh, becoming the first woman to hold the position and the first female to serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet. She also served as vice president for university advancement at Duquesne University and vice president for development at The Pittsburgh Foundation.

In 2001, Carter was honored as the Fundraising Executive of the Year by the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

She relocated to Florida and was named vice president for development of the New College Founda-

ANNA MARIA – According to Anna Maria Building Official Jimmy Strickland, the city has authorized the resumption of electrical and water services for Shawn Kaleta’s property at 9802 Gulf Drive.

Due to unpermitted work taking place, the city issued a stop work order on the cottage renovations. When the work order was ignored, Mayor Dan Murphy requested the electricity and water be disconnected until the property and its permits were brought into compliance.

According to City Attorney Becky Vose, the water service had actually been discontinued prior the Murphy’s requesting the water be turned off in mid-September.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Vose sent an e-mail to Kaleta’s attorney Louis Najmy that said, “I just found out that the water was turned off for non-payment, the city had nothing to do with that. The city was going to have the electricity turned on Friday, but when the city contacted the tenant for the inspection needed before turn-on, the tenant said that she was too busy and that the city should wait until next week.

It appears that you made a very big deal out of a non-issue.”

Vose note referred to an e-mail Najmy sent to Murphy on Friday, Sept. 25, which was later forwarded to all five city commissioners by one of Najmy’s associate. Najmy’s e-mail demanded services be restored and threatened legal action if they were not.

“I’ve extended my olive branch, and the threats seemed to have stopped, “Mayor Dan Murphy said on Friday.

Murphy has informed Kaleta’s attorney that the city will again consider permit applications submitted by Kaleta.

Whitmore ethics complaint dismissed The Florida Elections Commission found no probable cause for the complaint.

MANATEE COUNTY – An election-related ethics complaint filed against Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore has been dismissed.

The complaint was filed by Terry Wonder, who challenged Whitmore in Whitmore the 2014 county elections. Filed in August 2014, the complaint stemmed from remarks Whitmore made at candidate’s forum hosted by the Manatee Tiger Bay Club.

Whitmore’s remarks pertained to Wonder’s participating in past elections, including a special election regarding a county health care issue.

Dated Sept. 17, 2015, an order of no probable cause issued by the Florida Elections Commission says, “Based on the complaint, report of investigation, staff’s recommendation and oral statements,

if any, made at the probable cause hearing, the commission finds that there is no probable cause to charge the respondent with the following violation: Section 104.271 (2), Florida Statutes, that prohibits a candidate from making a false and defamatory factual statement with malice about an opposing candidate. Therefore, it is ordered this case is dismissed.”

The hearing took place in Tallahassee on Aug. 27.

Whitmore responds

After learning the complaint had been dismissed, Whitmore recently said, “My opponent charged that I stated untruths in a debate about her voting record. I stated, according to the Supervisor of Elections office data, she voted twice, ever. She did not vote in the special election for the healthcare tax which was a very hot issue during our race.

“One issue on my opponent’s campaign platform regarded the special election, healthcare and how the county handled it. When checking voting records, I discovered she did not vote that day. My opponent filed a complaint stating that in fact she had voted three times in her life.”

Addressing the intent behind the complaint, Whitmore said, “This

was politically motivated and an abuse of the system. My opponent stated after the election that she would continue to be committed to fight for our county. She has since moved to Colorado, and I was cleared by an unbiased commission that looked at all the facts and found the complaint to be baseless.”

Whitmore defeated Wonder in the 2014 election by a 59.5 percent to 40.5 percent margin.

Museum gets a make over The museum reopening coincides with a new historic city tour and a new YouTube channel.

ANNA MARIA – What’s old is new again at the newly-renovated Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum.

Located in the Historical Park at 402 Pine Avenue in Anna Maria, the museum reopened to visitors Tuesday morning. A grand opening will take place in November.

Last week, Historical Society President Maureen McCormick provided a tour of the renovations that took place after the museum was temporarily closed in September.

When asked what’s new, McCormick said, “Everything. What was once a thing of panel boards and cases is now a wide open space. We have a much better flow and we tell the story of the Island in a chronological manner now.

We have a new color-coded timeline that tells the story of the three cities, juxtaposed against national events too.”

Pointing to the timeline display, McCormick said, “People can pull out the drawers and look at the fun things contained inside.”

The museum now has a map kiosk that includes maps and aerial photos displayed on a digital screen; and McCormick pointed out a new wall-mounted map she is particularly proud of.

“This map was never available; we were able to obtain the rights to it,” she said of the map that shows the Island when it was known as Palm Key. “This is the original homesteads; this is how the Island was given way by the federal government under the Homestead Act of 1862 and the Land Act of 1820.”

Story time

The museum experience is enhanced by volunteer docents who share their local knowledge, and volunteer docents are always needed, especially during summer months.

“We talk about the first settlers and what they did. People are amazed when they learn this was once a homesteaded island, and the government gave people this land. They just love the stories and the charm of it all. The story of the pier, the Anna Maria Beach Company and how Holmes Beach developed. We talk about the post-war boom and also tell the fishing stories.”

Pointing to a vacant space, McCormick said a new exhibit was expected to be installed this week.

“We’ll have the story of Jack Holmes and his development of the center of the Island.”

Standing by the front door that faces Pine Avenue, McCormick said longtime museum volunteer and board member, Betty Yanger’s wish has finally come true.

“Betty always dreamed of having that front door open. It was blocked in the past, and we’d lose people who didn’t know to come around to the side door.”

The museum also has new thermal windows that will help protect the exhibits from the Florida sun while making the museum more energy efficient.

New floors also were installed.

Team effort

“The board went out and pursued the grants and asked for the money. We had matching grants from the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs. We worked with a preservationist, Ashley Burke from Burke Preservation, and Ashely helped us obtain the grants from the state,” McCormick explained.

“John Crane went to the TDC (Manatee County Tourist Development Council) and wrote the story of why we felt we needed this, and they were able to give us $25,000 in matching funds for the capital improvements that we would match that with other gifts, which we got from Lizzie Vann, the Bishop Foundation, the AMI Chamber of Commerce Save the Trolley Fund and the Mary E. Parker Foundation. Without their generous support this would not have been possible.”

McCormick served as the project manager and managed the grant paperwork, but she was quick to share credit for a group accomplishment.

“Many hands made light work of this,” she said, noting that Lynn Brennan and Nancy Deal were among those who worked diligently on the project.

“The city’s been wonderful to us with our lease and giving us this space,” she added.

“I call it a walking tour, but you can walk or bike it. It tells the story of each

of the places you’re seeing, when they were built and what makes that spot special,” McCormick said.

Murder takes a hilarious turn The volunteer community theater cast did themselves proud opening night.

ANNA MARIA – It’s no mystery. The Island Players’ 67th season is off to a rollicking start with last week’s opening night performance of “Murdered to Death.”

The murder-mystery, sleuth-spoof opened Thursday, Oct. 8, and continues through Sunday, Oct. 18.

Before the performance began, Director Heiko Knipfelberg addressed the audience and said, “I’ve assembled a cast of characters that no doubt will tickle you, three of which have never graced our stage before and haven’t been in a production since high school,” He was referring to 18-year-old Lucas Piety, Palm View Elementary teacher Susan Mergens and Island resident Kristin Allen.

“Murdered to Death” stars Island Players' veteran Mark Shoemaker as the bumbling, stumbling, word-butchering Inspector Pratt, a longtime sergeant trying desperately to make a good impression while conducting what appears to be his first murder investigation.

Tripletail a triple treat A

s we were leaving the dock at Ken Thompson Park last week, the sun was just making its first impression on the eastern horizon, painting the silhouette of Sarasota’s expanding skyline in beautiful shades of pink and purple. Captain Rick Grassett and I were headed south towards Big Pass to scout the Gulf waters off Sarasota for false albacore and Spanish mackerel.

As we cleared New Pass and headed into the Gulf, the signs looked good as schools of bait were beginning to appear on the surface and a number of birds were in the air. We headed south towards Casey Key where there had been reports of false albacore and Spanish mackerel working schools of bait just off the beach. We were early but hoped to be in position when any action started.

After traveling as far as Grassy Point off Casey Key, we hadn’t seen any action so we waited off the beach as the sun rose and began to warm the scene. As can often happen, especially early in the season, the action never materialized. After about an hour, we decided to run some of the stone crab trap

The decision was a good one and changed the course of the day and our target of choice. After only running a few traps, we spotted a small tripletail on a crab trap marker. Grassett waited a minute and then returned near the float and dropped his trolling motor.

After closing in, I made several casts before getting the shrimp fly in a position where the fish attacked it. Unfortunately I didn’t hook up and after trying several more passes we decided to move on. That’s when we started seeing tripletail on what seemed like every

then on, we alternated as we started seeing more and more fish, including floats that held multiple targets.

After missing a few fish, we started hooking up. On one float we actually found four tripletail and caught three.

For the most part, they were small, but we did find and catch several respectable fish.

We headed back to the dock just after noon where we compared notes on how different these fish are and the approach required to entice and hook them. The tripletail has a compressed body with a triangle-shaped head. Their eyes are small but they have a large mouth.

The name tripletail is given because of the fish's three rounded fins: dorsal, caudal

and anal.

They are ambush feeders and essentially lay on their side near a float looking more like weeds than fish. When an unsuspecting food source approaches, they make their move. When fly fishing for them the best approach is to actually pull the fly right at their mouths, completely counter to other species.

In the end, we were catching them by just pulling up near a float, cutting the motor and casting. What had started out as a day seeking false albacore and Spanish mackerel had turned into a banner day on tripletail. This is the time of the year to keep your options open. Make a plan but be flexible and be prepared make a change for the better.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, blues and Jacks in Sarasota Bay and tripletail in the coastal Gulf on flies during the past week.

Chris Smith, from Nashville, Tenn., fished Sarasota Bay with me on Monday. We worked deep grass flats and edges of bars on both sides of the bay. It was his first saltwater outing, and he did well catching and releasing trout, Jacks and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies fished on a sink tip

fly line.

Nick Thompson, from the UK, fished the same areas with me on Tuesday and had similar action catching and releasing numerous trout and a bluefish on the same fly patterns. Rusty Chinnis, from Longboat Key, fished the coastal Gulf with me on Friday. We found baitfish plentiful although the water is still a little warm for some migratory species at 80 degrees.

With stone crab season opening on the 15th, there are plenty of places for tripletail to be, and we caught and released a few tripletail on a shrimp fly pattern.

Although the tripletail were small,

the challenge is still big! Cooler water should push some larger tripletail as well as albies, Spanish mackerel and more into our area.

Action with false albacore and Spanish mackerel should turn on as each passing front cools the water. Tripletail are also a good option now in the coastal Gulf. You may find trout, Spanish mackerel, blues and Jacks on deep grass flats. Snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges close to passes with flies and DOA Lures should also be a good option. Look for reds, snook and big trout mixed with mullet schools on shallow flats and edges of bars.

HOLMES BEACH – With only three sea turtle nests remaining to hatch on Anna Maria Island this season, volunteers were gratefully acknowledged for their contributions in saving the threatened species at the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring awards luncheon at CrossPointe Fellowship on Saturday.

From beach walkers who record statistics on sea turtle nesting and hatching to their coordinators, Debbie Basilius, Kathy Doddridge, Pete and Emily Gross, Maureen McCormick, John Schimkaitis and Marv and Lee Zerkel, to people who paint stakes that mark the nests to photographers who donated their work to a notecard project to benefit the non-profit organization, Turtle Watchers were treated to a luncheon topped off with turtle cupcakes, a silent auction and an update on the season, which ends on Halloween.

Half of the 356 turtle nests laid on the Island this season successfully hatched, with heavy rains that flooded the beach causing 175 nests to not hatch, Director Suzi Fox said.

While flooded beaches drowned turtle eggs in their nests, relocating the nests would have caused other problems, she said.

Turtles in their eggs develop into males and females depending on the temperature of their nests, she explained, with warmer nests, higher on the beach, producing females and cooler nests, closer to the water, producing males. By relocating nests out of the path of floodwaters, too many female hatchlings result, putting the population out of balance, she said.

Instead of protecting turtles from nature, volunteers are focusing on protecting turtles from people, educating them about lighting and removing items from the sand at night, she said.

The organization also continues to collect data for submission to scientists, including that nesting on the bayside of the Island, which has not been renourished, is increasing, Fox said.

In addition to shepherding more than 12,500 hatchlings to the Gulf this season, volunteers also saved five adult or sub-adult sea turtles that stranded on area beaches, releasing them into the Gulf of Mexico, she said.

The group had its first satellitetagged turtle monitored by the Sea Turtle Conservancy this year; Amie, named for Anna Maria Elementary School, is swimming in last place – in true turtle form – in a competition with a dozen other turtles to see which one travels the farthest on their migration routes.

A popular new program, Tuesday Turtle Talks, was so successful that it is being relocated to the larger CrossPointe Fellowship, which also has more parking than Annie Silver Community Center, where it was held this year, she said.

Doddridge initiated the project, asking volunteers for their best work; 14 volunteers submitted 89 photos for judging.

The notecards will be available for purchase at area festivals for $10 for a package of eight. Proceeds will benefit Turtle Watch.

The group is considering producing a shorebird notecard series in the future and possibly a Christmas card, Doddridge said.

During sea turtle season, May 1 – Oct. 31, please follow these tips: • Turn off lights visible from the beach and close blinds from sundown to sunrise; lights confuse nesting sea turtles and may cause them to go back to sea and drop their eggs in the water, where they won’t hatch.

Light can also attract hatchlings away from the water.

• Don’t use flashlights or camera flashes on the beach at night.

• Remove all objects from the sand from sundown to sunrise; they can deter sea turtles from nesting and disorient hatchlings.

• Fill in the holes you dig in the sand before leaving the beach; they can trap nesting and hatching sea turtles, which cannot live long out of the water.

• Don’t use sky lanterns or fireworks; they litter the beach and Gulf.

• Do not trim trees and plants that shield the beach from lights.

• Never touch a sea turtle; it’s the law. If you see people disturbing turtles, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

To be harvested, stone crab claws must be at least 2¾ inches in length when measured from the elbow to the tip of the lower immovable portion of the claw (see illustration).

Claws may not be taken from egg-bearing females, which are identifiable by the orange or brown egg mass, also known as a sponge, visible on the underside of the crab when it is picked up or turned over.

Recreational harvesters can use up to five stone crab traps per person. Stone crabs may not be harvested with any device that can puncture, crush or injure a crab’s body. Examples of devices that can cause this kind of damage include spears and hooks.

Recreational and commercial traps may be baited and placed in the water 10 days prior to the opening of the season, but may not be pulled from the water for harvest purposes until Oct. 15. Traps that are not being fished should be removed from the water to avoid

ghost fishing, a process in which marine species get caught in the trap for extended periods of time and are not harvested.

Harvesters are encouraged to take only one claw, even if both claws are of legal size, so that the released crab will be better able to defend itself from predators. A crab that is returned to the water with one claw intact will be able to obtain more food in a shorter amount of time and therefore regrow its claw faster. There is a recreational daily bag limit of 1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons per vessel, whichever is less.

The season will be open through May 15, closing May 16.

NOAA grants fund red tide research NOAA recently awarded $2.1 million to improve observation, forecasting and mitigation of harmful algal blooms (HABs), such as red tide, and hypoxia, which it calls two of the most scientifically complex and economically damaging coastal issues.

“Understanding and predicting if an algal bloom will become toxic remains one of the biggest technical challenges,” said Mary Erickson, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, which is providing the funding. “These projects will help communities and agencies understand, detect, and predict toxic algae and hypoxia. They are part of a larger NOAA effort to develop a national

network of ecological forecasts to protect communities and make them more resilient to these threats.”

The grants will allow organizations to implement new monitoring technologies to address emerging HABs and investigate the role of climate change, nutrient pollution and other factors to better predict and manage blooms, according to NOAA. They will also improve upon current monitoring and seasonal forecasting for HABs, as well as apply robotic technology to improve hypoxia monitoring.

Team Blake wins The Team Blake Day fundraiser that took place Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Fish Hole adventure golf course in Bradenton Beach on Saturday will help 13-year-old Blake Carpenter and his mom Chrystal deal with a variety of serious and lifelong health issues Blake is dealing with.

The money raised through the entry fees, silent auctions and other activities will assist the Carpenter family with medical expenses, including prescriptions, lab work and other services not covered by insurance, including fuel for trips to All Children’s Hospital and therapy appointments.

“We had a great turnout with a steady flow of golfers all day. We estimate that at least 200 people attended Team Blake Day,” said event organizer Jeanette Morris.

“That number doesn’t reflect the handful of people who simply stopped as they walked past and decided they wanted to contribute and those who stopped their vehicles in the middle of Bridge Street and ran over to the admission table and said, ‘Here’s a donation.’ We are so grateful to all the businesses and individuals who contributed and made that possible, and we are overwhelmed by the generosity,” Morris said.

Dredging done, beach expanded City Pier visitors now have some additional shoreline to enjoy.

ANNA MARIA – The dredging of the Lake La Vista channel entrance and the resulting beach renourishment near the Anna Maria City Pier has been completed.

Last Wednesday, Joel Smith from Siteworks of Southwest Florida used a Takeuchi Excavator to finalize the shoreline site work that produced renourished beach areas on both sides of the City Pier. Smith estimated 2,500 yards of new sand had been removed from the channel area and placed on shore.

On Thursday, Paul and Carrie Wrubel from Plainfield, Illinois were among the first to enjoy the renourished beach area.

“Love it,” Paul said, while relaxing in a beach chair.

“It’s awesome, and I found a lot of sand dollars,” said Carrie, noting that she left them on the beach rather than taking them home.

In September, Mayor Dan Murphy told city commissioners the dredging project would cost approximately $87,860, depending on how much sand was removed and relocated.

Women’s writing group to meet The Anna Maria Island Art League will host a women’s writing group, “Writing From Art,” by author and writer Susan Huppert.

First time home buyers fading fast

nce upon a time, there was the American dream of home ownership. The story went something like this: You graduated high school and college, landed a good job in a field you loved, met the person of your dreams, got married, had 2.5 children and somewhere along that timeline bought a home. But has that dream turned into a nightmare?

A National Association of Realtors’ survey conducted in July reported that first time home buyers made up the smallest share of U.S. buyers in nearly 30 years.

According to the NAR report, about 33 percent of home buyers were first time purchasers during the 12-month period ending in June. That percentage is down from 38 percent from the year earlier and down from 40 percent, which has been the historical norm. Also, more than 30 percent of the first time home buyers had incomes in the $45,000 to $75,000 range, leaving those in lower income levels struggling.

In addition, the cost of rentals has gone up considerably, creating the perfect financial storm of high debt and low income, without much left over for a down payment. In addition, some young buyers, after having watched their parent’s home lose a tremendous amount of value, may not be that motivated.

One interesting statistic also reported by the National Association of Realtors in its 2014 end of year report is the single woman’s influence in the real estate market. According to the NAR, single women are buying homes twice as frequently as single men. In fact, 23 percent of first time

buyers are single women – a cultural shift unheard of even 10 years ago.

First time home buyers who can scrape together enough cash to even consider a home do have some first time buyer programs available to them. Fannie Mae, in an effort to make it easier for working class people to get a mortgage, are easing restrictions that were put in place after the financial crisis when borrowers had to have high credit scores and higher down payments. Over the past couple of years, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have loosened some of those restrictions allowing down payments as little as 3 percent.

First time buyers, of , have the option of a fixed-rate mortgage and an adjustable rate mortgage. Adjustable rates could work for young borrowers who anticipate an uptick in their income or who plan on relocating before the rate adjusts. First time buyers may also have the option of an FHA loan, which has easier credit qualifying criteria, lower closing costs and less stringent debt to loan ratios. FHA mort-

gages do come with other restrictions and possibly inspections, so this choice needs to be carefully reviewed. And for those in the military service, VA loans could be a great option.

The newest Fannie Mae program to be rolled out this year addresses multigenerational households. This new program will allow lenders to include income from nonborrowers who live within a household to help qualify for a mortgage. Geared for low income and minority borrowers who frequently have non-traditional households, Fannie Mae is hopeful that more working class people will be able to achieve homeownership.

Mortgage financing has come a long way during the years I’ve been buying real estate, when the only thing the mortgage application asked about the wife was her name. Hopefully, first time buyers will find a way back into the market as well as all combination of households. That said, I still worry about everyone’s ability to meet that monthly payment.

Bay Guardians boost Grassy Point vegetation A group of 33 Bay Guardian volunteers with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) planted 750 native Florida plants at Grassy Point Preserve in Holmes Beach on Saturday.

The 26 varieties of species planted include blanket flower, seaside goldenrod, leavenworth’s tickseed, yellow tops, muhly grass, Jamaica caper, coral bean, firebush, scorpion tail and white indigo berry.

Native plants help restore local habitat, which stabilizes shorelines and supports diverse wildlife species. The volunteers also removed trash and other litter from the 34-acre preserve.

Mayor Bob Johnson took the opportunity to present a proclamation honoring former Commissioner Billie Martini, who was instrumental in establishing Grassy Point Preserve.

SBEP project partners included the city of Holmes Beach, Around the Bend Nature Tours and the Manatee County Department of Parks and Natural Resources. The city purchased the plants and provided lunch to the volunteers, which included several Anna Maria Elementary School second graders and their parents.

Each outing includes environmental education and a picnic lunch following the morning project, with new volunteers receiving a T-shirt featuring the Bay Guardians logo.

“We we’re out there rescuing pelicans.

It was crazy,” Bystrom said.

“We were out where the fishing pier connects to the causeway, so we were close to the waterspout, but we had the pier to cover us. If it looked dangerous, we were going to take the boat underneath the bridge. We saw it from a distance when it hit the truck. We saw a ton of mail flying all around the sky. We shot across the causeway and under the bridge and there was mail all over the bay.”

Dwyer said, “We were approaching the bridge and saw a lot of debris in the water. We were searching for pelicans, but we soon found out the area was covered in mail, packages and envelopes. Everything you could imagine being in a mail truck was floating in the water.”

Bystrom called her nephew, Brian Hall, a detective with the Holmes Beach Police Department, and asked who they should contact about the mail.

“He said he would make the call for me,” Bystrom said. “Everyone knew the twister had hit the truck, but did they know that it picked the mail up and scattered it all over the place?”

“We picked up as much as we could get,” Dwyer said. “We handed it to the police officers at first and later on we handed more mail to FWC. We were finding checks for $60, for $100 floating around, and the FWC guys said they found a check for either $21,000 or $2,100.”

Added Bystrom: “We collected mail for a while and then decided to go back to rescuing birds because we only had so much time. But then we came back and there were Marine Patrol officers out there collecting the mail. We helped them out some more before we headed back to the house.

There were pictures, baby pictures, a title to a car, birthday cards… You name it, it was in the water. There were notifications from attorneys; there was one lady responding to a foreclosure notice on her home and giving the reasons she doesn’t think her house should be foreclosed,” she explained.

“I’m just wondering what’s going to happen when all these people think their mail was sent and it never made it? It’s kind of sad. There was also a chain link fence plastered with mail.”

When asked if she saw any Anna Maria, Holmes Beach or Bradenton Beach addresses, Bystrom said, “I didn’t notice any Island mail.”

Dwyer said, “A lot of it was for Palmetto, Fort Myers, Tampa, and out of state; and I saw a few for Canada.”

Letters: Employees rebut I’ve never seen such vile comments

Identified as paid political advertisements approved by the candidates, both letters are particularly critical of Mayor Jack Clarke and City Clerk Terri Sanclemente and have begun to arrive in the mailboxes of city voters.

Shearon is trying to regain the mayor’s seat he lost to Clarke in May. Robertson is trying to retain the ward 3 seat she current holds, facing a challenge from first-time candidate Ralph Cole, whom she never mentioned in her letter.

“While I am asking you to return me to commission, most importantly I am asking you to return Bill Shearon as our mayor,” Robertson’s letter says.

Targeting Clarke and clerk

Shearon’s letter states Clarke: • Hired a city clerk who has no credentials, formal training or formal education; • Promoted the uncredentialled city clerk to permanent status with a $20,000 pay raise, plus 13 percent in additional benefits, plus a city car; • Disrupted city operations and violated an existing ordinance by placing properly credentialed city staff under the supervision of the uncredentialled city clerk, resulting in the resignation of the treasurer.

Shearon’s letter also says Clarke “supported deficit spending” by giving city employees a 3 percent raise.

Robertson’s letter said Clarke “gave huge raises to two marginal clerks who had vaguely claimed harassment by Shearon and manipulated commission into a 3 percent raise to all staff.”

Clerk responds

In response, City Clerk Terri Sanclemente said, “William Shearon asked me on three separate occasions to become city clerk. He and former Treasurer Sheila Dalton’s plan was to keep me on probation.

"If they deemed my performance satisfactory, they would give me a small salary increase every three months, which after one year would have brought my

Sanclemente pointed out that Clarke actually proposed a 1.5 percent pay increase for city employees, and it was the commission majority, minus Robertson, that collectively agreed on 3 percent raises.

“The previous city clerks also had use of the city clerk’s car. The car is a 1997 and doesn’t even have a tape deck or overdrive,” Sanclemente added.

“Mayor Clarke is a fair and just mayor who city employees can approach and not be afraid of retaliation,” she concluded.

Chief critical

Commenting on Shearon and Robertson’s campaign letters and many other statements that have recently appeared in print, Police Chief Sam Speciale said, “I’ve been working for the city for almost 30 years. I’ve never seen such vile comments made or misinformation spread for one hateful little group’s own gain.”

Collective response

Several other city employees collectively responded to Shearon’s letter with a written statement presented on behalf of the public works department and some members of the administrative department.

“It truly is sad to read an election letter with such a venomous tone, vile accusations and bad grammar. Shearon couldn’t even spell his opponent’s name correctly,” the statement said.

In regard to the recent administration department restructuring, it said, “Mayor Clarke reinstated city staff supervision back to how it was before Shearon changed it. Treasurer Sheila Dalton and Deputy Clerk Audra Lanzaro chose to quit after not being able to answer for some of their actions.

"For example: they did not submit the 941 form to the Internal Revenue Service which resulted in late fees and penalties for the city in the amount of $1,773. They also falsified the 941 form by putting the wrong dates of submittal on it.”

The IRS revelations were discussed at the Oct. 1 city commission meeting.

The employees’ statement also noted that Clarke proposed a 1.5 percent pay raise for city employees and mentioned unbudgeted pay raises Lanzaro and former Deputy Clerk Tammy Johnson received from Shearon without commission approval.

The employees’ statement concluded by saying, “Mayor Clarke has restored stability and civility in city hall. We do not have that bully mentality anymore.

The black cloud has been removed. It has been an honor working with Mayor Clarke, and he, not Shearon, is truly the people’s mayor.”

Back on the field again: Fall youth soccer kicks off

Despite the new branding of the Island’s Community Center, some things do not change. With the fall breeze sweeping over the field, two youth recreational soccer teams took the field on Oct. 5 as the sun began to make its decent. The 8- to10-year-old league pitted two wellmatched teams against each other: Miller Electric coached

by David Johnston and The Feast coached by Chris Culhane.

The game started with Josie Alderson in the goal for The Feast and the kick off by Kiera Johnston for Miller Electric. With strong defense by both teams, Miller Electric’s goalie, Anthony Nguyen, kept the ball out of the goal for the entire first half of the game.

Gregory Jordan showed his defensive talents for The Feast. Alderson’s quick reaction in goals kept her team in the game, allowing only one goal in the first 14 minutes of play when Kiera Johnston kicked the goal.

Both Kendall Johnston and Mikaela Culhane showed their teams offensive and defensive play that assisted Miller Electric and The Feast, respectively.

Down by one goal at the start of the second half, The Feast came out playing hard. Kyle Samuels fought hard defensively for Miller Electric. The Miller Electric team passed the ball well down field. A smart cross-field pass by Nicholas Yatros to Nguyen allowed Miller Electric to score in the first two minutes of play taking the score to 2-0.

Alderson out of the goal showed her defensive maneuvers, forcing Nguyen to change directions and work harder for his second goal of the game. But The Feast quickly came back to score its first goal of the game.

With the scoreboard at 3-1, Samuels dribbled the ball down the field before being stopped past mid-field.

Nguyen took over the ball and dribbled past the lone defender to scoring, giving him a hat trick. After Nguyen’s goal, goalies for both teams changed: Langdon Bell for The Feast and Kiera Johnston for Miller Electric.

The game ended with the score of 5-1 after Nguyen scored his fourth goal of the game again with Alderson playing strong defense. Despite the score, both teams played strong and stayed tough throughout the whole game, proving this to be another competitive youth recreational soccer season at the Center.

When asked if the performances gets easier once opening night is under the belt, Piety said, “Yes it does. It gets easier as you go; not much easier, but a little bit.”

Dropping his faux-French accent, Pearl said, “Wonderful audience. It was really exciting to perform to a great crowd tonight. They laughed at all of the jokes. It was a real pleasure and a great experience.”

Standing outside the theater as the appreciative crowd exited, Knipfelberg said, “I’m very pleased the way it turned out. Everybody did a fantastic job.”

As for the notion that future performances would come even easier for the cast, Knipfelberg said in his perfect director’s voice, “No; they shouldn’t let up. They have to continue to discover things about their characters, and there are still a few little gaffs here and there they can work on.

It’s a learning process and they have to keep going.”

While waiting for the Monkey Bus to take her and her two friends back to the Silver Surf Resort in Bradenton Beach, a first-time theater patron named Christine said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I thought the guy who played the inspector was hilarious. How could he keep a straight face? I was cracking up just listening to him. He was wonderful.”

“Murdered to Death” continues this week with 8 p.m. performances Tuesday through Saturday and concludes Sunday, Oct. 18, with a 2 p.m. matinee.

PTO fundraiser to promote mammograms The Anna Maria Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization and Bowes Imaging Center are partnering to promote screening mammograms and raise funds for the PTO. Bowes is donating 100 percent of its fee for every designated screening mammogram to the PTO during the week of Oct. 26-30, and will write a check on Friday, Oct. 30 for the full amount that it would have received for every screening mammogram done in the name of the PTO. The average insurance co-pay for a screening mammogram is $141.

In the past, to raise $141 through traditional fundraising, a single student at AME would need to sell: • 30 rolls of wrapping paper • 24 tubs of frozen cookie dough, or • 300 chocolate bars With Bowes’ contribution, if 100 women participate, the PTO will earn $10,000-$14,000 in one week.

CEO Nathan Bowes has deep roots in the Island community, having attended Anna Maria Elementary as a child. His two sons currently attend classes at AME and, he says, “The history of Anna Maria Elementary is of strong community and business

support, and we wanted to continue that tradition. Working in the field of imaging also reminds us to care for the health of our community, so we combined the two for this partnership.”

Lindsay Sauls, AME PTO president, says she’s “grateful for this partnership with Bowes Imaging Center. Not only is this an opportunity to raise a significant amount of money for our PTO, but it is also an opportunity to remind women to take care of their health. We have one AME parent who said her mammogram prescription has been sitting on her desk for at least six months. When she heard about this fundraiser, she called and made her appointment. It was just the prompt she needed.”

A single membership is $20, a family membership is $30 and a North American Reciprocal Museums (NARM) membership is $100. NARM memberships provide free admission to more than 680 museums, including the Ringling Museum in Sarasota and the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. until January, when the hours are extended until 4 p.m. through season.

The victim arrived at police station and reported damage to his Mercedes that he believed occurred while parked at the Bridgeport condominiums. The vehicle owner discovered a large dent on his passenger side door and said it looked as though someone had kicked the door in. The victim could not prove when or how the $1,300 in estimated damage occurred.

No criminal intent was proved, but a report was issued for informative purposes only at the request of the victim’s insurance company.

10/3, 1:10 p.m., suspended license, 100 block of Bridge Street. A van advertising an adventure sports business was stopped for rolling through the stop sign at Third Street South before turning north on Gulf Drive. The officer determined the driver had a suspended license and had previously been warned for the same offense. The driver was issued a summons for driving on a suspended license, and the vehicle was removed by a licensed driver.

3100 block of Gulf Drive observed a white male suspect on a motor scooter traveling north and wearing earbuds in both ears.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on East Bay Drive. When advised the scooter driver had an ID card but not a driver’s license, the officer issued a summons for not having a valid driver’s license and a civil citation for wearing earbuds covering both ears.

9/27, 11:43 a.m., driver’s license/truck bed passengers, 3100 block of Gulf Drive. A stationary officer observed a silver Nissan pickup traveling north bound with three children 10 to 13 years old riding in the truck bed. During the ensuing traffic stop, the driver said his driver’s license has expired in 2009 and he was not a U.S. citizen. The officer issued a summons for driving on an expired license and civil citation for allowing the three underage passengers to ride in the truck bed.

9/30, 7:11 p.m., warrant, 8300 block of Marina Drive. An officer was dispatched to address a soliciting complaint called in by two people describing an African American male and a van. When the vehicle and subjects were located, one male walking the 200 block of 82nd Street was spotted carrying a tote and paperwork. The suspects said they were with a company called Gulf Coast Teens and trying to sell food to fund an amusement park trip for kids recovering from drug addiction.

One of the subjects was informed of the city ordinances for soliciting told to seek a permit in the future. When the officer learned that one of the suspects was wanted on a civil warrant for failing to pay child support in Sarasota that suspect was arrested and taken to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office District 1 station for additional transport.

John relocated from Michigan to Anna Maria Island, Fla., in 1984 and there he stayed. He did not like to cross the bridge! He worked on the water renting various water-sports equipment. He became dock master at Catcher's Marina in 2002 and remained there until his retirement in 2012.

Those were happy days for him.

John enjoyed golf and football.

He was always generous to a fault.

He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

There will be a Celebration of Life for him on Anna Maria Island on Saturday, October 24 at 3 p.m.
