ANNA MARIA – City commissioners have decided that Kebony hardwood will be used for the decking on the new Anna Maria City Pier. On Tuesday, March 6, commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of this being the material of choice for the pier to be built later this year. At an estimated cost of $3.24 per linear foot, the Kebony decking will be placed atop the concrete spun pilings and concrete support frames approved at the commission’s previous pier meeting. Kebony is a wood product made of 25- to 30-year-old pine that is then modified to give it characteristics similar to tropical hardwoods. Kebony is touted as being more stable than natural wood, splinter-free, barefoot-friendly and cooler to the touch. It comes with a 30-year warranty and an estimated life expectancy of 50 to 75 years. Eventually the decking will fade to a shade of gray that resembles the existing wooden pier.

Commissioner Carol Carter made the motion for the Kebony decking and Commissioner Dale Woodland cast the only opposition vote. Woodland again expressed his preference that the existing pier be repaired and rebuilt instead of being completely replaced. Woodland said some city residents were looking forward to the pier being rebuilt pretty much the way it is. “You can’t build character, that comes with time. But we had that time on that pier and that’s the part I miss; and there’s nothing you can do about that when we chose to rebuild the entire pier,” Woodland said. Carter’s motion was preceded by Commissioner Brian Seymour’s unsupported motion to go with Ipe Brazilian hardwood that touts a 75-year life expectancy at $3.91 per linear foot. The commission gave no serious consideration to the Azek plastic and wood composite decking options offered at $2.75 to $3.91 per linear foot. With the basic construction materials now selected, Ayres Associates Vice President Jay Saxena said the design firm now has the direction it needs to proceed with the design of the pier structure and decking. Architect Barron Schimberg then presented preliminary plans and renderings SEE PIER, PAGE 33

ANNA MARIA – Mayor Dan Murphy said the city’s $750,000 pier replacement appropriations request is included in the $89 billion budget to be sent to Gov. Rick Scott for his signature and final approval. The 2018 legislative session scheduled to end Friday, March 8, was extended through Sunday afternoon to allow state legislators more time to finalize Florida’s annual budget.
Murphy said the city now has firm funding commitments for approximately $3 million of the estimated $4.5 million needed to replace the Anna Maria City Pier and the restaurant and bait shop at the pier’s T-end. “We should be able to do it for less than that, but $4.5 (million) is the worst case,” Murphy told city commissioners on Thursday, March 8. Murphy said he anticipates $1.7 million in pending FEMA funds – for pier damage sustained during Hurricane Irma in September, which resulted in the pier closure. SEE FUNDS, PAGE 33
