LO SPETTRO

DELL’ACQUA

THE WATER'S SPECTRUM

What happens when we catch sight of The Water’s Spectrum? In this exhibition, Annalisa Mercuri explores the fragile threshold between presence and dissolution, where water, in its ever-changing states, becomes a metaphor for time, memory, transformation, and life, suggesting possible and urgent pathways

At the heart of the exhibition is The World Weather Diary , a project launched on 22 April 2024, Earth Day, as an invitation to reflect upon our shared responsibility toward the planet 160 people across 43 countries received from the artist a kit for creating cyanotypes, including origami templates for making an ice cube and photosensitive postcards on which to place it, to be exposed to sunlight during the autumn equinox. Each participant was invited to record environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light), yet many found themselves spontaneously adding personal reflections as well. The postcard was then sent back to the artist through traditional mail, completing a cycle that brings together the digital and the analogue, presence and absence, gesture and contemplation

The 121 postcards received from 33 countries now bear witness not only to climatic conditions but also to fragments of life, intimacy, and global interconnectedness, forming a collective work, a poetic map in shades of Prussian blue During the equinox - a moment of balance between light and shadow - we are called to pause, to take stock, to let go, and to prepare for renewal, recognising value even in emptiness. Each cyanotype is the trace of a gesture, of a period of waiting, of a relationship with matter, dimensions often overlooked in the digital age It preserves the past without rigidly fixing it, rather, it interprets it It does not privilege objective data but instead becomes a metaphor for the fragile, selective, and poetic nature of human memory.

At a time when climate change is affecting and altering natural cycles, Mercuri proposes a secular and sensitive ritual through which to resynchronise ourselves with the rhythms of the Earth. The postcard - a threshold between public and private, and the physical memory of a moment - is marked by a postage stamp, a symbol of authenticity and travel that also transforms it into a message, an act of waiting, a relationship The message itself is deferred, the writing requires interpretation, desire enters the scene and becomes bound to anticipation

This global reflection is interwoven with a local investigation rooted in the artist’s homeland Mercuri gathers water imprints from the Adige River, the Adriatic Sea, Lake Garda, and the Tartaro River The latter in particular, together with traces of the surrounding landscape and ecosystem - created on Narushima Washi , a traditional handmade Japanese paper produced from plant fibres, a living medium capable of receiving and preserving natural memory - were documented by the artist on the occasion of the inauguration of the Mulino Novo in Erbè, celebrating the rebirth of a space restored, through remarkable commitment and foresight, to the community and to beauty

Through this exhibition, Annalisa Mercuri tells us how urgently our contemporary condition calls for the rediscovery of slowness, care, and connection. Her artistic practice is at once a solitary and a collective ritual, a meditation on time transformed into poetic gesture, an invitation to return to listening to the world that surrounds us, to which we belong, and which, ultimately, we are.

IL CANTO

DELL’ACQUA

THE WATER’S SONG

The theme of water and the difficulty of translating it into an image represent one of the most complex artistic challenges Giving form to what is nature's quintessential fluid element, capturing in a static dimension what is the fruit of incessant dynamism, might seem like a response to the effort to denature it of its intrinsic component Annalisa Mercuri's process aims to translate moments of becoming into successive sequences, never identical to one another, as if we were dealing with lemmas of a cipher whose expressive code is its own movement Cyanotype, a technique based on the use of a primary color, Prussian blue, is a perfect match for water and the language of rivers, lakes, and the sea; salts applied to paper, when exposed to sunlight, generate chemical reactions that create gradations from intense to pale blue, modulated by the intensity of the sun; Thus, the impressions produced, perfectly imitating reflections, replicate their transparencies and ripples, in what are, sometimes, evanescent compositions of a highly evocative nature.

The works documented here were exhibited in September 2025 at the MuMu - Mulino Multimediale, the ancient Mulino Novo di Erbé, near Verona, recently returned to the territory and the community, thanks above all to the commitment of Chiara Reggiani. A central theme of Annalisa Mercuri's research is the fragile threshold between presence and fading, where water, in its changing states, becomes a metaphor for time and memory, transformation and life Annalisa Mercuri tells us how, in our contemporary world, it is urgent to rediscover the slowness and care of a watchful and patient gaze in capturing what a superficial and hasty approach often misses.

Her exploration begins from a familiar dimension. Mercuri collects water imprints from the Adige, Garda , Adriatic, and Tartaro, presenting images to the viewer on exquisite media, such as the precious Narushima Washi, a special Japanese paper crafted according to ancient artisanal practices. Her artistic endeavor is a meditation on time that becomes a poetic gesture, an invitation to listen to the secret voice of the world And time, in turn, banishes all frenzy, punctuating the undulating flow of water, following its silent and unstoppable movement

Annalisa Mercuri has pursued a unique path that has not lost an interest in science After classical studies, she embarked on scientific research, which then led to artistic creation Her profession fosters an analytical approach in addressing the most diverse themes, linked to conditions of grief, loss, loneliness, and the need to establish connections, even through unusual formulas. Of central interest is The World Weather Diary, a participatory project launched on April 22, 2024, as an invitation to reflect on shared responsibility for the planet It involved 160 people in 43 countries worldwide in a collaborative effort of observation and creation The exchange of postcards created using cyanotype printing and sent by post reaffirmed how it is possible to forge a common thread of relationships on issues related to ecosystem protection.

The profound value of her research is a source of pride for an institution like the Accademia Cignaroli, with which she has established a close relationship over the years, committed to promoting and supporting innovative languages and outcomes based on originality of expression and quality of content. I was pleased to accept the invitation to present her work, believing it is our duty to give voice to those who can offer new interpretations of meanings and events relating to an everyday life that is too often destined to go unnoticed, but which should be reinterpreted, however, from unusual and, for this reason, new perspectives.
