Atlast year's PEN WV festiyal, you said that you'd always fett it would take fiye years

fOl" the festiYal to settle into NYC's arts calendar. How do you feel going Into the sixth

year?

I'm feeling good. The festival is flounshing, and I think we may have our strongest Pfogram

ever this year.

Are there any authors 01" events you're particularty excited to see?

Toni Morrison with Marlene van Nlekerk, the discussion about war wming with Philip

Gourevitc:h and others, Sherman Alexie's Arthur Miller Lecture, and the big opening-nig,t

reading at the 92nd Street Y on the 'JVednesday.

The paucity of English translations of wortd literature seems to be one of the key focuses of the PEN WV Festival. Why do you make this a focus, and why would it benefil Americans to read mOl"e outside their culture?

RagJ1gBIu Killing wrth knmess This is Essential: F ilm Streep, surprisingly, has won only two Oscars: one for Kramer .S. Kramer, the other for Sophie's Choice three years later. She's been beaten at the finish line 13 other times, by the likes of Hilary Swank and the Oscar-rursed Catherine Zeta-Jones. This lime, she'll most likely be overtaken by a worthy opponent, Kate Winslet. Somewhere ne,.-the beginning of Daubl, Father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) preaches, "Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainly. ' Streep, as Sister Aloysius, is certainty personified (until she Isn't) . Her performance, which could have easily lapsed into Scary Nun melodrama, is an exercise in restraint. It's exciting because It reminds us how great actors can hold US by the power of their delivery alone; action ba-ely comes into It. Particularly In adaptations of stage plays, the saeen acting is all too often fumbled or overplayed, even by lt1e best of them . (Think of Michael Caine trying to do Pinter in Sleuth) John Patrick Shanley's masterful script gIVes Streep a helping hand, but the cred~ remains hers. This time around, his gay cI1aracters aren't the hustlers of My Own Private Idaho, but activists trying to effect change . In terms of our own poilhcal dim ate (not just Obama but Prop 8), Van Sant couldn't have pid<ed a better hme for Milk, and !hat can only help his chances of collecting a gold statuette.

Com in' at ya: 3-D inanity Movie theaters: Sights & 8 ligh ts Kiling with kind1ess

Realism and hedonism combine as Van Sant examines (but doesn't romanticize) Harvey Milk's milieu. The director works woriders with his usual team, including his director of photography, Hams Savides. One of the most effective scenes, visually speaking, is one in which Harvey and a cop discuss the murder of a gay man. In postprociJction, Van Sant decicled to show the tense conversalion reflected entirely in the victim's shiny personal-alarm whistle. It foreshadows another of the movie's scenes of violence: Wlen Dan Wlite points his gun at mayor George Moscone, we watch his actions reflected in a mirror.

MilKs Oscar experience may play out like the last gay movie to generate Academy Award buzz, Brokeback Mountain. 'MIile Brokeback lost out to Crash in the Best Picture category, Ang Lee slill snagged the prize for 8est Director. Siumdog MI"ionaire may undeservedly get [he grand prize, but we can fervently hope that Van Sant's still got the edge over Danny 8oyle.-Anna King later today : Man on Wire, Best Documentary

The clothes in Van Sant's biopic are an essential part of its authenticrty: They're a 1970s swirl of plaid and striped polyester-ny1on blend stretched over muscle, wrth a color palette of baby blues and browns (who would've thoughlthere were SO many Shades of beige?). Add to that some head-to-loe Levi's denim and a splash of burgundy corduroy, and Glicker encapsulates the Castro couture of the times. For versimilrtude. Self-abso<ption aside, Hathaways body language conveyS that Kym is struggling with an awful amount of pa.n. 'Mlen she's speaking, her gaze often turns inward; she's not so much talking to someone as continually reliving the past. II's gentle touches like these that emphasize her detachment. But let's assume for now that it's F. Scott Fitzgerald and scnpter Eric Roth who deserve all the credit for this particular freak show.

Only the central premise of the story and saeenplay are the same: Benjamin ages In reverse. In Fitzgerald's 1921 short story, the hero IS adun-size at birth (fortunately, the labor scenes are glossed over) with ' a long, smoke-colored beard, which waved absurdly bad< and forth : This wo.u ld'lIe been a fairly simple matter to film: Just call Ian McKelien. Happily for us, Roth (an Oscar winner for Forrest Gump) took huge liberties w"h the original piaL He has Benjamin arrive into the world as a baby, with the wnnkled, computer-generated face of an elderly Brad Pitt In Fitzgerakfs world, of course, there's no Hunicane Katrina approaching as Benjamin'S Daisy (Cate Blanchett) lies dying. But what's surprising is that Daisy hersen is entirely absent. Neither is there a Queenie, or a Bntish diplomat's w~e, or a daug,ter named Caroline. Instead, Benlamin marries a woman called Hildegarde, whom he t~es of quickly; they have a son; Benjamin leaves them. From that point on, he Irves and d~ ak:>ne. It's a fitting tribute to Fitzgerald that Roth elects to call Button's lover DaiSY, as it was a significant name for the Jazz Age writer. DaiSY was Gatsby's lover, who was modeled on Fitzgerald's first love, socialite Ginevra King. It's a neat trick, taking another timeless tale of love, and superimposing ,t with one simple act of renaming. No CGI wizardfy reqUlred.-Anna King

G,ven Ch.n~'s not-so-hot reviews, it's surprising that Angelina Jolie has even snagged a nomination. In the spint of full disclosure, I feel duty-bound to say that I've been smitten wrth Jolle Sil1Ce Girl. Interrupted (I love me a sociopath) and, as such, am beholden to defend her honor.

Here's why she should get her second Oscar.

Jolie has become so defined by her action41ero roles that she faces the prejudice of recognrtion.

She has to wOO extra hard not to be seen as Lara Croft or ' Mrs. Smith.· Her performance in

Changeling is physically nuanced; yes, Clint Eastwood does Irain the camera on her face for an

annoyingly large amount of Oscar-baity lear-duct action, but lhere's more 10 illhan Ihat Unlll her

boy Weller disappears, Jolie moves like she's on roller skates, as she does I~erally al her day job,

as a 1930s phone operator Once watters gone, lhe manner in which she occupies screen space

changes . Her arms reach up 10 cover her face as she struggles 10 maintain composure; her body

hunches. From here, her charader evolves from weakness 10 strength, scene by scene, unlil Joile

does what she does best kick ass. Face-to-face with the creepy child-l<iller, she picks him up off

his feel and siams h,m againsl the walt. Bam

' Apparently , Jolie was hesitanllo lake the part, child abduction nol being her favorrte lopiC. Bul whal persuaded her was the idea of a fight, not against vRiains, but against poIftical corruption Viewed through that prism, the role fits . 11'5 just ~ period costume, rather lhan leather and glllS. PEN World Voices Festival: Adam Gopnlk apologizes to France On behalf of Canada Originally set to kick off today, PEN added an extra tidbit to Its program last week: a talk between Adam Gopnlk of The New YorKer and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, the 2008 winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. L Cl ezlo is very much a world vo ice. "You don't belong to a na onallty. you belong to the language in wh ich you wrlte/ he sa id t o Gopnlk, Citing Beckett as an Important example and sayIng that, in his Writing, his French owes an enormous debt to the creole of Mauritius ( he's both a Frenchman and a Mauritian) . But French authors, it seems, are not his favorite: His writing is more Influenced by wh at he calls "Jewish New York, " and American literature In general : J. D. Sali nger and Faulkner are among his favorites.

In 1948, Marlene Dietrich cut the ribbon outside the Paris Theatre on 58th Street. Jean Delannoy's La Symphonie Pastorale kicked off the theater's screenings, and went on to enjoy a 34-week run. Sixty years later, the Paris is the oldest continually runningart-house cinema in the U.S. To celebrate its anniversary, the theater hosted a special showing of Claude Miller's A Secret on September 13; members of the French consulate loitered in the foyer with Philippe Grimbert, author of Memory, the novel upon which the movie is based, After beinggreeted by the main usher, Paris fixture Eddie Argento (a baby-faced ringer for Frank Sinatra), cinemagoers lined up for complimentary soda and popcorn ; in lieu of multiplex faux butter, an old fashioned china saltshaker sat next to the cash register, The median age of the audience seemed to be a good deal older than that ofthe theater: Nestled together in the balcony, Paris regulars May and Philip Aisen were celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. After getting hitched in the Bronx, they came to Manhattan. Though they couldn 't recall where they dined or stayed on their wedding night, like true cineastes, they remembered seeing Oliver Twist at the Paris.

Sadly, there aren 't many old-style movie houses left in New Yo rk; most of the theaters built in the early years of the last century have, for the m ost part, been quashed by the tourism frenzy of Times Square. Lost gems include the Astor on Broadway and 45th (now the Site of a Marriott hotel) and the Roxyon 50th (demOlished in 1960 to make way for office space). The old Wonder Theater-turned Loews on 175th and Broadway is now home to God-fearing Rev. Ike's Palace Cathedral (better known for rock shows in the past few years),

while the Art Deco extravaganza that is Rad io City M usic Hall stop ped showing m ovies In 1.979. The Zlegfeld, which opened In 1927, remai ns a m id town stalwart, although in nam e only: It switched buildings In 1969 to itscurrentspot on 54 th Street. In contrast to th Paris's spa rse decoration. the Ziegfeld Is resplendent with gold trim and scarlet carpeting. In this respect, it's not unlike the old Paramount Theater, now part of Long Island University on DeKa lb Avenue In Brooklyn , Despite thesc:hool's conversion of the auditori um Into a baSKetball arena in 1962, the golden rococo ba lconies survive. Statues of merm a ids, eagles, dolphins and satyrs keep an eye on the act ion below. up a certain Belgian filmmaking duo in relation to your movie? You mean the Dardenne brothers? No, not at all; I think it's obvious that I'm really enamored of them! (Laughs 1My debt to them doesn't stop at the aesthetic, either. Their movies gave me tile cou rage to attempt things that I never would have done otherwise. There's an unwritten industry law that says, "American filmmakers, you can 'tdo those types of tllings here." But I felt like the Dardennes followed a character with a camera over his shoulder; why can 't I?

2. Was Ballast a conscious attempt to reexamine the South? Amongotherthings, yeah. I'm from California, but I'd spent close to ten years traveling through the South. I

became really taken with the geography of Mississippi: all these muddy, fallow fields and skeletal below-gray skies. It's a horizontal existence. I felt like I was on a lunar landscape , and yet it's both sad and beautiful at the same time . So itwas more of capturing that emotion as opposed to creating some sort of oountermythology.

3. Why did you decide to go the self· distribut ion rout e instead of sticking with IFe? It was a matter of control , to be honest. It's nothing against IFC; they're one ofthe good guys. But there were certain things, like going after the film in Southern markets, that would have been taken out of my hands , and I didn 'twant that.
