THE CHILDREN’S INN AT NIH

• GROUP PROJECT: Anna Helsel, Zoe Nystrom, Roozana Petrosian•

The Children’s Inn provides a free “place like a home” to children, teens, and young adults participating in clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health. To help with its renovation and new extension, our studio class was asked to design a tower called “Beacon of Hope” and a courtyard. My team of three proposed a design that was inspired by a lighthouse as a symbol of hope for the patients, families, and staff of the Children’s Inn.

CARVE:

Inspired by the courage and persistence of the patients and staff of The Children’s Inn, this “beacon of hope” metaphor is realized in a lighthouse that identifies dangerous waters and is a beacon for sailors to navigate to safety. The rocky shore is carved by the presence of water, a consistent tide that always returns to make an impact on the shore. The healing power and strength of water prevails even in the toughest situations.
