BSBA Finance & Business Analytics
My name is Anna Helsel and I recently graduated from the Corcoran School of Arts & Design at the George Washington University with a master in Interior Architecture.
Art has always been a creative passion and I’ve always wanted to be a designer. However, it wasn’t until adulthood when interior design sparked my interest. As a veteran spouse, I’ve moved over ten times across the country and overseas. Every move challenged me to create a functional space that fit with the local aesthetics, while still making it feel like a home. It was challenging at times, but I loved the process and was very satisfied with my results. I was also fascinated with how the same piece of furniture can look and feel different in a different space.
I am passionate about sustainable design and healthy buildings focusing especially on human wellbeing. To support my passion, I have earned the LEED Green Associates certification and am in the process of studying for the WELL AP exam.
I am extremely grateful to be a part of this amazing and aspiring design community. I am very excited to make a positive impact by applying what I have learned to create spaces that not only solve problems, but also are functional, inclusive, and mindful of sustainability and the wellbeing of people.

CONCEPT MODELS: SKETCHES:

Nearly 40% of Americans will develop some kind of cancer during their lifetimes and chemotherapy is one of the most popular and common types of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy delivers medicine through an IV infusion or injection with a syringe; the treatment can take up to eight hours. Therefore, it is important to create an environment that feels safe, protected, and fosters comfort and calmness.

CONCEPT
SUSPEND: hang / drape / string

Florence is known for its Chianti wine, which is made from Sangiovese grapes that are endemic to surrounding Tuscany.

My concept is inspired by the way grapes appear to be in a state of suspension from the ground and the propitiously similar way that wine glasses are stored, suspended from a rack.

THE CHILDREN’S INN AT NIH
• GROUP PROJECT: Anna Helsel, Zoe Nystrom, Roozana Petrosian•
The Children’s Inn provides a free “place like a home” to children, teens, and young adults participating in clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health. To help with its renovation and new extension, our studio class was asked to design a tower called “Beacon of Hope” and a courtyard. My team of three proposed a design that was inspired by a lighthouse as a symbol of hope for the patients, families, and staff of the Children’s Inn.

CONCEPT TOWER AXON TOWER DESIGN SOLUTIONS

CARVE:

Inspired by the courage and persistence of the patients and staff of The Children’s Inn, this “beacon of hope” metaphor is realized in a lighthouse that identifies dangerous waters and is a beacon for sailors to navigate to safety. The rocky shore is carved by the presence of water, a consistent tide that always returns to make an impact on the shore. The healing power and strength of water prevails even in the toughest situations.

NEXT
• COMPANION ROBOTICS COMPANY • STEELCASE STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION •
NEXT Companion Robotics is a hypothetical company based in the Seaport District, Boston, MA. The Seaport District, also known as the “Innovation Hub,” is a place where American history meets modern industry and technology. It is also a place where locals and visitors go to spend their leisure time. This design concept was inspired by these overlapping natures and how they co-exist in one place.
The design of the space will support the company’s goal of being an inclusive, flexible, and collaborative organization by offering a user-centered, multi-functional, and adaptable space.

STACKED STUDIO
• MICRO-UNIT APARTMENT •
The STACKED Studio is a diagrammatic study of a house where the main objective was to design a living space intended for one or two users in a small volume space known as a “micro-unit.” The total volume of this space is 270 SQFT.

PLANS CONCEPT

Micro-units are very small apartments, typically less than 350 square foot, with a small bathroom and kichenette. Micro-units are a great choice for young professionals who want to live close to a city center without spending too much money. In a microunit apartment, the ability to optimize space is crucial. My concept was inspired by various methods of maximizing small space and utilizing vertical storage.
