WELCOME
As we head towards the end of another busy year at An Lanntair, it's hard to believe Christmas is almost upon us again! As the winter nights draw in, there’s still plenty to brighten the season, with music, comedy, theatre, exhibitions, cinema and festive fun throughout November and December.
Our gallery programme is equally busy with with 36 artists from the Society of Scottish Artists exhibiting in Perpetual Motion (Main Gallery), Ian McHardy with Naked Gneiss (Café Bar Gallery) followed by an exhibition by Great Bernera artist Jenny Wilson. December sees the return of Grinneas nan Eilean, our much-loved Islands’ Open Exhibition, celebrating island creativity since the 1970s and offering the perfect chance to find a unique Christmas gift. Our Education & Outreach team has another packed programme, from Star Lantern making for the Christmas Lights Switch-On procession to cyanotype workshops, clay sculpture, wreath making and festive activities for younger artists. There's also our exciting Art Garden project, where young people will help design and build an outdoor stage, alongside our new weekly Music Detectives sessions. As Christmas approaches, we have Colin MacLeod performing on 18th Dec, followed by two concerts from the wonderful Western Isles Trad Orchestra on the 19th. For me, the orchestra has been one of the biggest cultural success stories to emerge from these islands in recent years. Bringing together such an incredible range of musical talent, across different ages and communities, it has become something truly special and something we should all be immensely proud of. It's a fantastic celebration of our rich musical heritage, but equally important is the opportunity it creates for musicians to come together, develop their talents and share the joy of making music. I really would encourage you to come along and experience it for yourself. Don't forget our Christmas Eve screening of It's a Wonderful Life, marking the film's 80th anniversary. Jim & the Café Bar team will also be serving up some festive favourites, while our shop is full of lovely gift ideas, displayed on our rather splendid new shelves! We'll then round off the year with our big Hogmanay celebration. Of course, this being our Christmas edition, I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported An Lanntair throughout the year. To our wonderful audiences and visitors, the extraordinary performers who have graced our stage, the talented artists whose work has filled our gallery, and the many facilitators and educators who bring such creativity, energy and imagination to our education and outreach programmes – thank you. A special thank you also to our many funders, whose support makes so much of what we do possible. Without them, much of this work simply wouldn't happen. And to those who no longer fund us, we'll continue making the case for the importance of investing in meaningful, creative and impactful arts programmes across our islands.
And finally, to our local community, who use this building every single day, whether for a coffee, a tasty lunch, a vibrant concert, an exhilarating exhibition, a workshop or simply to catch up with friends – you are at the very heart of An Lanntair. All of you make this place the success it is today. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas & a happy, healthy and creative 2027. Nollaig Chridheil agus Bliadhna Mhath Ùr!

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. So, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years, won 8 awards for performing, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4), written 6 books and 5 play scripts, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, sued the police (and won) 3 times, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours.

So basically expect a taster menu of government and personal mayhem, jokes, rants and a personal state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the f*ck is going on’ into a cogent hour of stand-up.
CEÒL & TACHARTASAN
If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right, there’s more, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at.
