ANIXTER CENTER: OUR STORY Established in 1919, Anixter Center originated as a response to the orphan crisis during the 1918 flu pandemic. Over the years, the organization has evolved while maintaining its dedication to enhancing the lives of the people it serves and the surrounding communities. In 1997, CHS merged with Anixter Center to enhance our community reach. While our mission has evolved over the years, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving the quality of life for the people we support. What hasn’t changed is our passion for helping; we lean-in where support is most needed but often most scarce.
Mission and Philosophy: Our goal is to transform expectations in service provision by making our services accessible to all. We believe everyone who needs support should be able to get access to that support, regardless of their ability to pay. We act with integrity, we lead with respect, and we push ourselves to challenge the status quo in disability services. Comprehensive Services: Anixter Center is a leader in providing comprehensive and quality services for individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, and those who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing. Community Reach: The organization serves over 7,500 children, teens, and adults annually, with 90% of them living at or below the federal poverty level. Anixter Center operates in more than 40 programs at over 30 locations, ensuring a broad impact on the community.
CHICAGO HEARING SOCIETY (CHS) • Audiology Clinics: Serving over 1500 patients with comprehensive audiology services.
• Advocacy and Outreach: Outreach and advocacy services, including youth programs, ASL classes, and domestic violence protection.
• Interpreter and Captioning Services: Our certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters provide high quality on-site, virtual and on-demand services, as well as captioning services, for the community, businesses, and special events. • Community Collaboration: CHS collaborates with over 400 corporations, providing sign language interpreters and training services.
DISABILITY SERVICES • Residential Living: Comprehensive 24/7 housing support.
• Lifelong Learning: Community centers offering enriching day classes and activities.
• Employment Services: Planning, job training, and placement services.
• Literacy Program: Provides adult learners free, one to one tutoring based on individual goals.
• After 22 College to Career: Partnering with City Colleges of Chicago and Special Children’s Charities, After 22 creates a pathway for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to attend college and find employment.
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES • Residential Living: Comprehensive 24/7 housing support.
• Drop-In Center: Community center offering enriching activities and support to find compassion, community, and connection.
• Counseling and Therapy: Outpatient mental health clinics offering counseling, therapy, and drop-in support. • Case Management and Therapeutic Support Groups
PARTNERSHIPS • Research and Demonstration Projects: Partner with leading universities to advance best practice standards for disability inclusion. • Consulting Services: One-stop training and consulting services for comprehensive and carefully curated employment services.
• Non-profit Alliances: Collaborate with non-profit organizations to experiment with various solutions in the pursuit of social and systematic change. • Corporate Social Engagement: Partner with businesses to create opportunities for social initiatives benefiting society
