ANIXTER CENTER: OUR STORY

Lester and Rosalie Anixter Center (Anixter Center) is an innovative not-for-profit organization that serves people throughout Chicago and the surrounding counties.  At Anixter, we believe in driving impactful solutions for people and our communities.

Anixter Center’s story began in 1919, delivering on a promise to provide a home for children orphaned during the 1918 flu pandemic. While our mission has evolved over the years, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving the quality of life for the people we support and the communities where they live. We have always leaned in where our communities needed us most.

Our philosophy is rooted in inclusion and belonging - we believe each individual should have access to the resources they need to thrive. Because when everyone has a seat at the table, our communities become stronger.

Today, Anixter Center stands as a recognized leader in providing comprehensive and quality services for people with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, and people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing.

WE SERVE PEOPLE MOST IN NEED, REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY.

That translates to more than 5,500 children, teens, and adults each year – 90% of whom are living at or below the federal poverty level – in more than 40 programs at more than 30 locations.

CHICAGO HEARING SOCIETY (CHS): OUR STORY

Founded in 1916, the Chicago Hearing Society (CHS) has evolved and grown over the years, merging with Anixter Center in 1997.

Today, our programs and services reach thousands of people throughout the state every year. As a central point of contact for those birth to 100+, our specialized services support and represent the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing communities. We provide services when our neighbors have nowhere else to turn.

CHS is a recognized leader in advocacy efforts; we can be found in schools throughout Chicago guiding children and youth to realize their potential. In addition, CHS partners with more than 400 corporations for sign language interpreters and training services.

DISABI LITY SERVICES

Employment Services | Employment planning, job training, and placement services.

Residential Living | Comprehensive housing including graduated levels of lifestyle living and 24/7 residential services.

Lifelong Learning | Community centers offering enriching day classes and activities.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Residential Living | Comprehensive housing including graduated levels of lifestyle living and 24/7 residential services.

Behavioral Health Clinics | Outpatient mental health clinics offering counseling, therapy, and drop-in supports.

Youth Program | Community-focused program supporting youth navigating the justice system through community resources and partners.

CHICAGO HEARING SOCIETY (CHS)

Audiology Clinics | Hearing health services supporting more than 1500 patients from testing to hearing aid fitting.

Deaf Services | Outreach and advocacy services for the Deaf community including youth programs, ASL classes, and domestic violence protection.

Interpreter Services | High quality certified interpreters are matched with corporate needs as well as events to facilitate communication access.
