ANIXTER CENTER: OUR STORY Lester and Rosalie Anixter Center (Anixter Center) is an innovative not-for-profit organization that serves people throughout Chicago and the surrounding counties. At Anixter Center we believe Inclusion means all – and disability is not the exception. It is a simple philosophy rooted in social change that drives human and community impact. Anixter Center’s story began in 1919, delivering on a promise to provide a home for children orphaned during the 1918 flu pandemic. While our mission has evolved over the years, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving the quality of life for the people we support and the communities where they live. Today, Anixter Center stands as a recognized leader in providing comprehensive and quality services for people with intellectual disabilities, mental health needs, and those who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. WE SERVE PEOPLE MOST IN NEED, REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY. That translates to more than 4,500 children, teens, and adults each year – most of whom are living at or below the federal poverty level – in more than 40 programs at over 30 locations.
CHICAGO HEARING SOCIETY (CHS): OUR STORY Founded in 1916, over the years, Chicago Hearing Society (CHS) has evolved and grown, merging with Anixter Center in 1997. Today, our programs and services reach thousands of people throughout the state every year. As a central point of contact for those birth to 100+, our specialized services support and represent the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing communities. CHS is a recognized leader in advocacy efforts and can be found in schools throughout Chicago guiding children and youth to realize their potential. In addition, CHS partners with more than 400 corporations for sign language interpreters and training services. .

WHAT WE DO DISABILITY SERVICES Residential Living – Comprehensive housing supports 24/7 residential services. Learning Academies – Community centers offering enriching day classes and activities. Employment Services – Employment planning, job training, and placement services.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH Residential Living – Comprehensive housing supports24/7 residential services. Behavioral Health Clinics – Outpatient mental healthclinics offering counseling, therapy, and drop-in supports.
CHICAGO HEARING SOCIETY (CHS) Audiology Clinics – Comprehensive audiology services from testing to hearing aid fitting. Deaf Services – Outreach and advocacy services for the Deaf community including youth programs and domestic violence protection. Interpreter Services – High quality certified interpreters are matched with corporate need as well as events to facilitate communication access.
PARTNERSHIPS We believe collaboration and strategic partnerships are fundamental to our mission and lasting change. Research and Demonstration Projects – Partner with leading universities to advance best practice standards for disability inclusion. Consulting Services - One-stop training and consulting services that are comprehensive and carefully curated employment services to advance disability-forward initiatives. Non-profit Alliances – Collaborate with non-profit organizations to experiment with various solutions in the pursuit of social and systems change. Corporate Social Engagement – Partners with businesses to create opportunities for businesses and their employees to participate in initiatives that benefit society are examples of corporate social engagement.
