Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first U.S. manned spaceflights. Johnson earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. Johnson’s work included calculating trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the Apollo Lunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon.

Marilyn Monroe was many things, but she was also a trailblazer for women. After only being offered “dumb blonde” roles in Hollywood, Monroe left in 1955 went into business with photographer Milton Greene to establish Marilyn Monroe Productions, and was only the third woman ever to start a production company in the U.S. She also fought for other women in the industry. When an L.A. nightclub owner thought iconic jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald wasn’t glamorous enough to perform, Marilyn promised she’d sit in the front row of each show to get people in the seats, which changed Ella’s career.

Rosa Parks was the brave woman who wouldn’t give up her seat in a Montgomery, Alabama bus. But she was also the first woman to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. After her death in 2005 at the age of 92, the activist was brought to the rotunda at the U.S. Capitol, where she received a final tribute reserved for statesmen and military leaders—the first woman to receive such a tribute and more than 30,000 people paid their respects to her.

Virne “Jackie” Mitchell, a baseball pitcher, was the first woman in the pro game. Mitchell proved they weren’t in the major leagues because they couldn’t play. During an exhibition game, she struck out the legendary Hall of Famers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Her performance supposedly played a part in Major League Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis banning women from the sport later that year.

Amelia Jenks Bloomer didn’t invent the bloomer, but she helped popularize this new article of clothing in the early 1850’s, which now bears her name, that would help women be free in their movement. Unfortunately, the style was much ridiculed and Bloomer had to revert to traditional dresses by 1859, but she remained an active member of suffrage movements throughout her life.

Marie Curie won not one but two Nobel Prizes. The first was in physics for spontaneous radiation, which she shared with her husband. She received her second Nobel award in chemistry, for her extensive studies on radioactivity. But Curie’s studies would eventually cost her life. She contracted a radiation-related blood disease from her research and died in 1934.

Hedy Lamarr, famous actress from the golden age of Hollywood, teamed up with avant-garde composer George Antheil to create a frequency-hopping technology, basing its functionality on player pianos. They received a patent from the National Inventors Council for their idea in 1942 and shared it with the U.S. Navy — but it was never used during World War II and never earned any money from it since the patent expired. Decades later the invention, spread spectrum, became the key technology for anything from mobile phones to wireless computer networks.

Josephine Baker, the famed singer, dancer and actress who was the first African-American to star in a major motion picture, was working in France during World War II, helped liberate France by smuggling numerous messages to French soldiers. She often hid messages inside her dress or concealed with invisible ink on her sheet music.

Kicker Head: emphasis on manufacturing growth in China? For China, the last 30 years have been fraught wit

Interestingly, when we asked about concerns with reports that China no longer has the lowest wage rate – another element that has fueled growth and therefore is slowing China’s rapid progress (BCG, 2014) – that fact was typically dismissed in our conversations as barely relevant, given the sheer enormity of the Chinese market (China’s population is 1.3 billion people, versus 350 million people in the U.S.) compared to any other market. What we experienced in China is what is difficult for the west to understand; namely, how much effort the Chinese are capable of and their sense of urgency. They willingly work every day of the week until all hours. It’s inconceivable for a westerner.

C

hina 2025 takes M4.0 to a whole new level. It is a structured, government-backed initiative that is being driven with urgency and intensity. The Chinese government wants to make Chinese manufacturers more competitive across the board by mandating upgrades in technology and innovation, such as curbing emissions and in the production of electric vehicles in the

auto segment, to increasing production of parts domestically. The government wants Chinese firms be seen as more innovative, moving away from an image of “fast and cheap” to higher quality and innovation as the recognized brand. What is driving the emphasis on manufacturing growth in China? For China, the last 30 years have been fraught with attempts to once again be the world’s economic leader. Struggling from previously low technological capabilities, the Chinese have gone well beyond special economic zones, with government and foreign funding and technology sharing, to fuel growth. But that’s not the key driver. China’s former Chairman Deng Xiaoping, as part of the special economic zone initiatives, urged the people of China to go out and create wealth in order to once again make China a world economic power. The People’s Daily referenced a 2005 study, where two-thirds of Chinese respondents indicated that their top three desires were (1) wealth, (2) travel, and (3) to be the world’s top economic power. Interestingly, when we asked about concerns with reports that China no longer has the lowest wage rate – another element that has fueled growth and therefore is slowing China’s rapid progress (BCG, 2014) – that fact was typically dismissed in our

o these chinese manufacturers know so much about M4.0 already when North American manufacturers are just beginning to understand and implement it? Because in China, the government has issued its own colossal version of M4.0 called “Made in China 2025.” This is an initiative to comprehensively upgrade the Chinese manufacturing industry. The initiative is similar to M4.0, which emanated from Germany as Industry 4.0 in 2013. The crux of M4.0 is applying digital “smart” technology and the Internet of Things in order to leverage data across functions, not only to increase production efficiency but to just as easily and efficiently customize products to meet constantly changing customer demands. he quote by author Dan Brown, “History is always written by the winners… the winner writes the history books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe,” comes to mind when considering the life of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner. In 2009 the documentary Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel was released. In 2017, a few months before he died, Amazon Prime debuted American Playboy, a ponderous ten-episode documentary series mixing vintage interviews with Hefner, as well as re-enactments by somewhat lookalike actors of him and many in his circle. These were far from impartial productions, with the producers reportedly receiving complete cooperation and access to clips and files from Playboy Enterprises, Hefner and his family. But maybe Brown might be incorrect in this case. As Hefner got older, and definitely after his death, many commented on the self-righteous pomposity of the man’s life. In his review of the 2009 documentary New York

Times critic Stephen Holder encapsulated what the probable goal of these productions were: “The movie wants us to forget the girls (although a fair number are shown in the buff) and contemplate the man behind the centerfolds as a heroic defender of freedom of the press and equal rights.” When he died many of Hefner’s obituaries were respectful, speaking of his support of civil rights, featuring both black and white jazz, folk and rock stars on his syndicated 1960s TV show, “Playboy After Dark,” the Who’s Who of interviews with world leaders, intellectuals and artists in the pages of the magazine that made news, plus major fiction and non-fiction pieces by top authors in Playboy and, his many liberal and progressive pursuits. "Let Them Eat Cake"

Marie Antoinette

arie Antoinette, the flashy 18th century Queen of France who spawned hundreds of Halloween costumes and a litany of “let them eat cake” merchandise, remains one of those historical figures who continues to attract loyal fans and fierce critics centuries after her death. The 15th child of a royal Hapsburg family in Austria, the young Maria Antonia was thrust into the diplomatic spotlight when she was married to Louis XVI at the age of 14. At first, the young princess — and later, the queen — took to royal life, becoming a fashion trendsetter for European royals while spending fortunes on any frivolity that piqued her fancy, including a small estate built in Versailles where she could pretend to be a peasant. The young queen’s reign would be short-lived, however, as tensions had long been building in France over the dictatorial reign of the noblemen above the peasant classes. Years of poor agricultural harvests, coupled with rising anger about taxes and the extravagant spending on the part of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, led to a revolt that would blossom into revolution in 1789. By 1793, the queen of France would be dead by guillotine, though her legacy still lives on today in Paris, Vienna, and of course, the Palace of Versailles. Sofia Coppola’s 2006 movie on the royal diva provides a mere glimpse into the lavish world of the Queen before facing the guillotine, with outfits featuring balloon-like skirts and other outrageous styles that continue to inspire designers today. Two centuries after her execution Marie’s controversial life and demise still impacts popular culture especially in fashion. As Scott described his creations out of the Moschino salon when it was introduced to a world that desperately needs a major distraction, “All I can do is offer respite. Even if you continue to fight, you need that moment of joy. We all need something uplifting. My role on this earth has only ever been to spread joy and bring happiness.” Who knew that this designer, and others, would turn to Marie Antoinette as a muse to help calm society’s turbulence in this century? Biking across the Pont Alexandre III on a beautiful day is the ultimate experience. How did the most beautiful city in the world become the city of bicycles?

BY ANITA V. CRUZ

A

s I used to consider the people who biked around this city to be members of a fearless warrior tribe. Mostly men, they dressed for battle in helmets, chain locks and reflective gear. The city’s few cycling lanes were shared with swerving buses or sandwiched between rows of pitiless drivers and were known as “les couloirs de la mort” — corridors of death. I’m risk averse, and I have

three kids. For the first 16 years I lived here, I never got on a bike. But something changed recently, and it’s not just because I fear catching the coronavirus on the Métro. In a feat of urban chutzpah, Paris — though not yet a cyclists’ paradise — is becoming a cycling town. Of course, cities like Brussels and Berlin have been improving too. And Paris is still far behind Europe’s true cycling capitals, like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, which have been building their bike infrastructures since the 1970s. But Paris is notable for the speed of its makeover. When visitors kept away by the pandemic finally come back, they’ll see that cordoned-off bike routes now crisscross the capital and connect it to nearby suburbs. Rue de Rivoli, the wide street that runs past the Louvre, has been entirely closed to private cars. Parisian drivers now expect to see bikes, and some even try not to hit them. What happened? biking felt suicidal to one where even neurotics like me pedal around town? Much credit goes to Anne Hidalgo, who became the city’s mayor in 2014. Shortly after her election, the city government passed the five-year Plan Vélo (Bike Plan) to carve out cycling-only lanes, separated from traffic.

February 2022 Soon, major boulevards became construction sites for months. Police warned that the project was pas possible. A growing pro-bike lobby complained that the plan was far behind schedule, while car advocates warned of a coming “Tour de France, in Paris, every day.”And yet it kept advancing. “It’s easy to draw up a plan to put bicycles everywhere,” said Jean-Sebastien Catier, head of the bike association Paris en Selle (Paris in the Saddle). “But it doesn’t get done unless the

political power says, ‘Yes, OK, I understand, but we’re going to do it anyway.’” key moment came in December 2019, when a national transit-workers strike shut down many buses and trains for months. The Plan Vélo was far from done, but enough routes were ready that record numbers of commuters pedaled to work instead. Soon the city unveiled cobblestoned cycling routes along the Champs-Élysées.Then came the coronavirus and a national lockdown. With practically no traffic, even non-urbanists like me suddenly realized how much space we’d given over to cars, and we envisioned these same streets as quieter, cleaner public spaces that could contain something else. We also saw how tiny and mostly flat Paris is. The city proper is

(In 2018 the city’s bike-sharing program, called Vélib’, added electric bikes and opened more suburban stations. While citizens like me were having urban epiphanies, city officials were facing an epidemiological fact: When Parisians emerged from lockdown, they couldn’t just crowd back into buses and Métros again. screw into the street. Suddenly there were bike-only lanes branching west to the La Defense business district and north to Seine-Saint-Denis, the Activists who’d spent years pressing for their plans to be enacted suddenly saw lanes appearing before their eyes. “It was like in a dream,” said Stein van Oosteren, spokesman for the Greater-Paris Bicycle Collective. “In a matter of 10 days, I think we did more than we would have done for maybe 10 years.” When Parisians emerged from confinement in May, fear of the virus and the new safer routes prompted a psychological shift. The number of female cyclists jumped. During rush hour, some streets had more cyclists than cars. Electric bikes made longer commutes viable, so the new paths weren’t just for urban hipsters. Even I bought a bike and soon discovered that cycling wasn’t just practical; I liked the exercise, the screen-free time and my new closeness to Paris’s “terroir.” After 16 years in cars and underground, or walking, I discovered that pedaling across the Seine on a sunny day is a peak experience.

I wasn’t alone. French advocates urge cyclists to feel more connected to the weather and to other humans. (“Vélo is an anagram for ‘love,’” Didier Tronchet wrote in his new illustrated book, “Short Treatise on Vélosophie.”) It’s not all poetry here. Many bike routes remain treacherous or incomplete. I still won’t let my kids ride alone. But I expect it to keep improving. Reaching a critical mass of bike routes is arduous, but after that “it’s a snowball effect,” Mr. van Oosteren said. “Once you have those voters on bicycles, you’re more inclined as a politician to create more bicycle lanes, and that’s what happening now in Paris. Now it’s going all over the place.” ayor Hidalgo has made the city’s “coronapistes” permanent and vows to make Paris “100 percent bikeable” before it hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics, with the Olympic Village in Seine-SaintI look forward to pedaling over to have a look. slowing China’s rapid progress (BCG, 2014) – that fact was typically dismissed in our conversations as
