BRE AKING MEWS

A Purrfect Partnership Friends, As the days grow shorter and the giving season begins, I find myself reflecting on what giving really looks like at Animal Friends. Often it's a bag of food or an afternoon spent walking dogs. Sometimes it's something less visible but just as powerful: a relationship built over years, with partners who decide that our mission is their mission too. Some of the most meaningful gifts we receive don't arrive in an envelope. They show up as trusted partners through a phone call answered at midnight, a referral that keeps a family and their pets together or a local officer who knows exactly who to call when an animal needs help. Our community partners open doors, spread the word and bring our work into neighborhoods we couldn't reach alone. Our social service partners help us see the whole picture, because when people are struggling, their animals are often struggling too. Our corporate partners invest not only dollars but expertise, time and heart. And our municipal police and other government partners stand with us on the front lines of animal welfare, helping protect animals who can't speak for themselves. I also want to offer special thanks to the veterinary clinic partners who extend our lifesaving reach. Our in-house team does

remarkable work every day, but no shelter can handle every emergency or complex case alone. In these pages, you'll read about our friends at VEG ER for Pets, one of our many trusted veterinary partners. Their emergency care, compassion and generosity make an extraordinary difference for the animals in our care and for pet owners across our region. This one is personal for me. All of us find ourselves needing help at some point, and I'm no exception. In recent weeks I've spent more than one late night at VEG: first with my dog Enzo (did that piece of blanket get stuck, or didn't it?), and then with my cat Manhattan as we worked through end-of-life care. Each time, I was met with patience, honesty and kindness. It reminded me that the care we hope to give every animal and family is exactly the care we all need when it's our turn.

None of the many partnerships we enjoy happen by accident. Each one is built on trust, shared values and a belief that Pittsburgh's animals deserve the very best we can give them, together. That same spirit lives in every one of you. When you give this season, you join a network of people and organizations who refuse to let an animal fall through the cracks. Thank you for being part of it, and for making Animal Friends a place where compassion is always a team effort. With gratitude,

Kathleen Beaver President & CEO

SHELTER ENRICHMENT

Enrichment: Fun, Games and More!

Scan the QR cod to learn more! e

By Suzanne Denk, CSB-C, Dip. FBST, FDM, Animal Enrichment Specialist At Animal Friends, the slogan for our shelter enrichment program is “Enrichment, not just fun and games.” Enrichment is often thought of as an activity that keeps pets occupied, such as a Kong, a walk, a chew item, a toy or a puzzle. However, simply providing an activity does not necessarily make it enrichment. The goal is about much more than keeping pets busy. Enrichment is about meeting an animal’s instinctual needs through their environment, food, sensory experiences, social contact and mental stimulation, just to name a few. If an activity does not meet an individual animal’s needs, then it is not enrichment. Our staff takes the creation, planning and implementation of enrichment activities very seriously. Toys and enrichment activities are provided to shelter pets in their kennels daily. Themed activity spaces offer opportunities to explore, build

confidence, develop skills, solve problems and have fun. Enrichment activities also complement training protocols and may help reduce unwanted behaviors by providing appropriate outlets for instinctual needs. Offering meaningful enrichment is an essential part of the daily routine for our staff and volunteers. When providing enrichment, it is important to observe how an animal responds to an activity. Our staff monitors each pet and adjusts enrichment activities accordingly. If a dog, cat or rabbit appears calm and relaxed after foraging, digging or sniffing through a busy box, the activity may have successfully fulfilled an instinctual need. However, if an animal is physically

exhausted but remains unsettled, or becomes frustrated by an activity, their needs may not have been met. In these cases, our staff adjusts the enrichment offerings to better suit that individual pet. Supporting Animal Friends means supporting much more than fun and games. Your generosity helps us meet the instinctual needs of the animals in our care, reduce boredom and stress, and provide meaningful experiences that support their well-being every day. With your help, we can ensure that while our shelter pets wait to find loving homes, their days are filled with opportunities to learn, explore and thrive.

AFFV

A Bond That Heals. By Melissa Stammely-Park, Community Resource Advocate (AFFV) In the summer of 2025, a local veteran, Harry turned to Animal Friends for Veterans (AFFV) during one of the most difficult chapters of his life. A painful divorce and custody dispute had left him struggling with loneliness, depression and anxiety. With guidance from his mental health provider, Harry knew an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) could offer the comfort and companionship he needed to begin healing. Our AFFV staff and Placements Team carefully considered what Harry needed in a companion: a calm, gentle dog who would be happy simply by his side. Soon, Mickey, a four-year-old Labrador who had endured repeated breeding and confinement, arrived through one of our rescue partners. Despite her difficult past, Mickey remained remarkably gentle, trusting and loving. When Harry and Mickey met, the connection was immediate. Two lives shaped by hardship found comfort in one another, and they went home together that very day. Mickey became more than a companion; her steady presence brought warmth to Harry’s home and comfort as he worked toward healing. But the support didn’t end with adoption. When rising costs made dog food difficult

to afford, AFFV provided monthly food assistance to help Harry continue caring for Mickey. Nearly a year later, our team also connected Harry with free summer vaccine clinics so Mickey could receive the veterinary care she needed. Harry later shared his gratitude, writing, “Animal Friends does so much more than find homes for animals; you also bring hope, healing and companionship to people who need it most. The Veterans Program is a wonderful example of that mission…”

Harry and Mickey’s story is a reminder that the animal-human bond can be lifechanging, and that meaningful support extends far beyond the day an animal finds a home.

Your generosity to the Major Ben Follansbee Fund makes stories like this possible. By supporting Animal Friends for Veterans, you help provide meaningful matches, pet food, veterinary care and ongoing assistance that keep veterans and their beloved companions together when they need each other most.

Could You Be His Happy Ending? Meet Huey! By Kayla O’Leary, Placement Counselor Some dogs have to wait a little longer for life to go their way. For Huey, that wait has been far too long. Huey first arrived at Animal Friends in 2021 through our Humane Investigations department alongside several other dogs. After nearly two years in our care, he was adopted and finally had a family to call his own. But in 2025, he returned to us when his owner was moving and couldn’t find housing that would allow him to come along. Now, another year has passed, and Huey is still waiting for someone to give him the chance he deserves.

Huey can be cautious when meeting new people, and he prefers to take his time building trust. But with patience, kindness and a few tasty treats, you’ll begin to see the sweet boy underneath. Once you’re in his circle of trust, Huey’s affectionate side shines. He may even

‘paw’. He enjoys enrichment activities like lick mats, puzzle feeders and sniffing out hidden treats. Huey is looking for an adult-only home with adopters who have previous experience with Dobermans or Rottweilers and feel confident handling a large, strong dog. He’d prefer to be your only pet so he can be the prince of his castle and enjoy all the love and attention for himself. Huey has experienced the joy of having a home and the heartbreak of losing one due to circumstances beyond his control. Now, he’s waiting for someone willing to give him the patience, stability and understanding he needs to thrive.

Huey has waited long enough for someone to choose him. Could you be the person who finally shows him that he's home to stay?

NESTLE TITO This spunky, high-energy pup came to Animal Friends as a transfer from a partner organization and is ready to find a family that can keep up with his playful spirit. Tito loves outdoor zoomies, playing fetch with stuffies or rope toys and showing off his smarts for tasty treats.

TRIPP This playful dog arrived at Animal Friends in July through our Humane Investigations Department and is ready to find a family to call his own. Tripp loves soft stuffed toys, showing off his epic zoomies and keeping busy with peanut butter lick mats and treat-filled pools. When playtime is over, he’s always happy to settle in for some cozy snuggles and affection. Tripp gives barks of appreciation to Maryann D. Balish for her sponsorship.

This handsome three-year-old arrived at Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations Department and has been winning hearts ever since. Nestle loves soaking up pets and attention from his favorite people. Toys aren’t really his thing, but a relaxing afternoon or a long hike with his human sounds perfect! He’d do best in a home with children ages 13 and older who understand and respect his boundaries. If you’re looking for a loving companion who’s always up for an adventure or a cozy day together, Nestle might be your perfect match.

ROYAL XHARA This sweet one-year-old pup has a big heart and a story that deserves a happy ending. Xhara was rescued by Pittsburgh Police last summer alongside her mother and siblings. After finding a family of her own, she recently returned to Animal Friends when her family could no longer meet her needs. Now, she’s ready for another chance. She needs an adultonly home with experienced adopters of similar guardian breeds. Could you be the experienced, understanding family Xhara needs to thrive?

NETTLE This precious 12-year-old pup came to Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations Department and is currently enjoying some extra love and attention at the Allegheny County Jail as part of the TAILS program. She is a gentle, loving soul who may be hard of hearing, but she still has a playful side and plenty of affection to share. Nettle is looking for a calm home with a patient family where she can relax and enjoy her golden years.

This sweet two-year-old gal first arrived at Animal Friends as a transfer from a partner organization before finding a family of her own. Unfortunately, she returned to us when her previous family could no longer care for her. Now, Royal is ready for another chance. She adores being petted and receiving affection from her favorite people, but she also has a playful side and loves showing off her favorite toys. Royal wants to be the queen of her kingdom, so she’ll need to be your one and only pet. Royal gives barks of appreciation to Marilyn Weber for her sponsorship. ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org

FE ATURED C AT

Meet Xian: Your Future Coworker and Cuddle Buddy.

By Kayla O’Leary, Placement Counselor At eight years old, Xian has perfected the art of winning hearts, making friends and keeping everyone around him entertained. This affectionate gentleman has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite thanks to his playful personality and love of attention. In fact, Xian is such a people cat that he even enjoyed lending a paw to our medical team with their desk work. Whether he’s keeping you company throughout the workday or settling in for some well-deserved affection, Xian is sure to make every day a little brighter.

Xian does have some special needs to consider. He has a stress-induced condition called PICA, which means he sometimes eats non-food items. Because of this, he’ll need a home where his environment can be carefully managed to help keep him safe, and a home with children ages 13 and older. The good news? Xian won’t have to navigate these needs alone. Through our Yana’s Special Feline Fund, his adoption donation is underwritten, and he’ll receive lifelong support from our Behavior Department to help him thrive in his new home.

To help these special cats find the right families, their requested adoption donations have been underwritten and each of them will be sent home with an individualized starter kit of supplies and other support based on their unique needs.

12

Petsburgh Magazine

Xian has so much love and personality to share, and he’s ready to find someone who will appreciate all the wonderful things that make him unique. Could this charming guy be your new favorite coworker and cuddle buddy?

Meet Xian at Animal Friends and discover just how special this sweet boy can be.

ALICE This gorgeous tortie is ready to rule a home of her own. Her foster mamma says she’s the sweetest girl who enjoys being petted—but she’ll let you know when she’s had enough attention. She’s looking for someone who understands her independent spirit and is happy to let her be the queen she was born to be. Could Alice be your perfect match?

TORTILLA This three-year-old dilute tortie may be suspicious at first, but once you earn her trust, her sweet personality begins to shine! The way to her heart? Churu treats, shoelace playtime and tasty tuna served straight off a spoon. Tortilla gets along well with other cats but would love a calm, adult-only home where she can blossom at her own pace. With a little patience and lots of love, this sweet girl is ready to come out of her ‘Tortilla’ shell!

ADOPTABLE C ATS

SPARKLER This three-year-old sweetheart was abandoned in our lobby, and now she’s ready to find a patient home where her charming quirks can shine. Once she knows you, she’ll become your shadow, following you wherever you go. Sparkler loves chin and neck scratches and might even flop across your keyboard to demand a much-needed cuddle break. Sparkler wants to be the star of your world, so she’ll need to be your one and only cat.

RASCAL

POP SMOKE & CHLOE

This clever four-year-old tortie arrived at Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations department in July and is ready to find a home that appreciates her big personality. She loves keeping her mind busy, whether she’s chasing teaser wands, scratching to her heart’s content or showing off her puzzlesolving skills for some tasty treats. Rascal is a classic Tortoiseshell with ‘tude and enjoys seeking out attention, but she can occasionally become overstimulated. She’ll do best in an adult-only home.

These sweet two-year-old girls were found together as strays. Chloe is the more confident of the pair, but both girls know that tasty treats are a great way to make new friends. As a bonded pair, Pop Smoke and Chloe must be adopted together. They’re looking for a calm, adult-only home where they can continue building confidence at their own pace. Pop Smoke and Chloe meow "Thank You" to Karen J. Courson for her sponsorship.

WHISTLE This six-year-old was surrendered to us when his owners were moving and he was unable to go with them. He loves attention and loves to play, but he can be a bit nervous with new people and new environments. If you're interested in being his new best friend, adopt him today. Whistle gives purrs of gratitude to Elaine E. Tokosh for her sponsorship.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Partners in Care:

At Animal Friends, every life saved is the work of many hands. Our staff, volunteers and donors are the heart of that work, and our corporate partners extend our reach in ways we could never manage alone. In this issue, we are proud to shine a light on one of those partners: VEG ER for Pets, known to many simply as VEG. VEG was a generous sponsor of our Black Tie & Tails gala, and we are deeply thankful for that support. But the true measure of this partnership can't be captured on a sponsor banner. It shows up in the hardest moments, often in the middle of the night, when an animal in our care needs more than we can give in-house. When Minutes Matter VEG is one of our most trusted emergency partners, one that we rely on for critical, emergent and complex cases. The three regional VEG hospitals -- Pittsburgh, Cranberry and Bridgeville (opening early 2027) -- are open around the clock, every day of the year. When a dog arrives with injuries that need specialized surgery, or a cat takes a sudden turn after hours, our team

knows that at VEG, that animal will be met with skill and compassion. For our staff and in-house veterinarians, that certainly is invaluable. No shelter can be equipped for every emergency. Having a trusted partner ready to step in means our veterinarians can make decisions based on what is best for the animal, not only on what is within reach. It eases the weight our caregivers carry, and it means no animal in our care is left without a path forward. A Shared Commitment Through our affordable veterinary clinic, Animal Friends is committed to making care accessible, because no one should have to choose between their budget and a beloved companion. But no single organization can meet every need. We are grateful that clinics like VEG step up too, helping financially strapped pet owners, good Samaritans who stop for an injured stray, and families facing critical situations that demand both expertise and kindness. That spirit runs through VEG Cares, the company's national charitable program, run with the nonprofit Veterinary Care Foundation. Funded entirely by donations, VEG Cares lets emergency teams say yes to treatment for pets whose families face financial hardship, animals displaced by natural disasters, police and service animals, and pets in the care of shelters and rescues. Since 2019, VEG Cares has helped over 25,000 people and their pets. “At VEG, our commitment to the greater Pittsburgh community extends beyond the walls of our

14

Petsburgh Magazine

hospitals. It means being there for local shelters and rescues, the animals they care for, and families facing an unexpected emergency,” says Hospital Manager Colby Edson. “Partners like Animal Friends share our belief that every animal deserves compassion and every person deserves kindness. By working together, we can help more animals get the care they need and support the people who love and advocate for them.” VEG's own team members drive much of that giving. On the annual VEG Cares Share Day, participating hospitals donate all of the day's proceeds, half to their local VEG Cares fund and half to charities chosen by staff. In October 2025 alone, 38 VEG hospitals participated in VEG Cares Day and raised close to $500,000, which was matched by VEG to generate close to $1M fundraised to support people and their pets. VEG also offers scholarships to veterinary students and has launched a canine blood bank program in select cities. To everyone at VEG Pittsburgh, Cranberry and (soon to open) Bridgeville: thank you. Your partnership saves lives, steadies our team, and reminds us that caring for animals is truly a community effort. Is your business ready to make a difference for Pittsburgh's animals? We'd love to welcome you as a partner. Contact Mike at MWarren@Thinking OutsideTheCage.org or scan the code below to learn more.

opportunities to have fun while making a difference. Every activity, every donation and every act of compassion helped animals in need. This year's theme, It's All Fun & Games, celebrated something we see every day at Animal Friends: play helps animals heal. Enrichment, engagement and positive experiences build confidence, reduce stress and help animals prepare for loving homes. While the games are over, the impact of this incredible evening will continue for months and years to come because of you.

Together, we didn't just reach our goal. We made history for the animals who need us most. Thank you for playing. Thank you for caring. And thank you for helping animals win. Saving lives. It's what we do.

comfortable. Keller is the more reserved sister, but she has her own special ways of showing happiness. Helena, on the other hand, is the adventurous one who loves exploring her surroundings. Together, they’re an adorable duo who can often be found showing off their impressive binkie skills or flopping down, side by side for a relaxing afternoon nap. Because Keller and Helena need time to build trust and adjust to new surroundings, they’re looking for a

quieter home with children ages six and older who can respect their space and boundaries as they settle in. With a little patience and lots of love, these lovely sisters will have the chance to blossom at their own pace.

Double the personality and double the love! Keller and Helena are ready to bring their special kind of bunny magic to a home of their own. Could you be the one to welcome this inseparable pair into your life?

LEPRECHAUN

This four-year-old bun arrived at Animal Friends in December 2025 when his previous owner could no longer afford his care. He’s now living in a loving foster home while waiting for his next adventure. He has a big personality and isn’t afraid to show it, whether he’s racing around the room in victory laps or boxing and grunting to demand his meals.

This sweet five-year-old bun returned to Animal Friends when his previous family no longer had the time to care for him. Leprechaun has showed everyone just how mellow and easygoing he is. He’s perfectly happy lounging the day away and soaking up attention. When he wants a little extra affection, he’ll rest his head against your hand.

PE T RE TENT ION

Keeping Families Together, One Bowl at a Time. By Gayle Bair, Community Resource Advocate

As the year draws to a close, we’re reminded of what matters most: family, community and compassion. For 95% of families, pets are part of the family. But when finances become tight, even providing everyday essentials like pet food can become a challenge. Animal Friends’ Chow Wagon Pet Food Pantry helps bridge that gap by providing nutritious pet food to community members experiencing financial hardship. By easing the burden of pet care expenses, we help families keep their beloved companions at home, where they belong.

our Chow Wagon Pet Food Pantry and ensure assistance remains available to neighbors who need it.

Together, we can help make sure that a difficult season doesn’t mean choosing between caring for a beloved pet and meeting other essential needs. Because every family deserves the chance to stay together.

The need for assistance doesn’t disappear during the holidays. In fact, seasonal expenses can stretch household budgets even further, making a bag of pet food or a case of canned food an especially meaningful gift. Community generosity helps keep Chow Wagon stocked and ready to support families when they need it most. For families facing difficult choices, pet food assistance provides more than nourishment. It offers reassurance, preserves dignity and helps ensure that financial hardship doesn’t force someone to give up a cherished companion. Pets provide unconditional love, comfort and companionship. Helping families care for them is one way we can return that love. Each month, Chow Wagon supports approximately 3,000 families by distributing more than 15,000 pounds of pet food. Through onsite distribution, community outreach events and a network of 40 partner pantries, rescues and social service agencies, this vital resource reaches families throughout the greater Pittsburgh region. You can help keep the bowls full and families together. Donations of pet food and other needed supplies help sustain 20

KINDNESS CORNER

Kindness Is a Gift We Can All Give!

Learn more!

By Kelly Spanos, Humane Educator and Therapets Training Coordinator What comes to mind when you hear the word giving? Maybe presents, holiday surprises or helping someone you love. But did you know that giving doesn’t always mean purchasing something? Sometimes, the best gifts are the little things we do to make life better for others. Humane Education teaches children how to be kind to animals and people. We learn to think about how others feel and what they might need. This is called empathy, and it’s a superpower we can all practice.

Your Kindness Challenge.

What’s one way you can help an animal this week? Share your idea with your family and see if you can do it together. You don’t have to be big to make a BIG difference. Ever y act of kindness counts.

22

Petsburgh Magazine

Here are five ways YOU can spread kindness to animals this holiday season:

1

Share what you can. With help from a grown-up, donate pet food, toys or gently used supplies to help animals and the people who care for them.

2

Be a pet detective. Watch your pet’s body language. Is your dog ready to play, or is your cat looking for a quiet place? Giving animals space when they need it is a kind thing to do.

Help at home. Fill your pet’s water bowl, measure their food or gather their

3 toys with help from an adult.

Be a kindness helper. Thank someone who cares for animals, help a friend

4 or do something thoughtful for a neighbor.

Give your time. Read quietly near your pet, play a favorite game or spend

5 time together when they want attention.

Remember, kindne ss isn't just for the holidays. Animal need love, care ans d respect every day.

A Little Patience, a Lot of Love: Mickie’s Story

Maddie Aicher, Placement Manager

For fearful shelter dogs, finding the right person can take time. While confident, outgoing dogs may quickly catch an adopter’s eye, shy dogs often need something different: patience, understanding and someone willing to see the incredible companion beneath their fear.

When Mickie arrived at Animal Friends, she struggled to feel safe. She trembled in her kennel, startled at sudden noises and relied on a strict routine and familiar faces to feel secure. Finding a foster home that could meet her needs proved difficult, so staff and volunteers worked patiently to earn her trust. With time, gentle encouragement and plenty of treats, Mickie began to show everyone who she really was. She was playful, chasing balls and racing around with the zoomies. She was affectionate, snuggling beside trusted friends. And she was certainly strong-willed, never hesitating to let her handlers know when she wasn’t interested in their plans. Despite all these wonderful qualities, Mickie continued to wait. For 771 days, she hoped someone would look beyond her fear and see her potential. Then came Candice. Through Animal Friends’ Foster-to-Adopt program, Candice welcomed Mickie into

her home. Within days, Mickie was eating her meals, sleeping soundly in her cozy bed and showing off her speed in the backyard. She quickly bonded with Candice, becoming an affectionate companion who always wanted to be close. There were still challenges along the way, but Candice met them with patience and love. After just 22 days in foster care, Mickie officially became an Animal Friends alumna! Now known as “Princess Mickie,” she is thriving alongside the person who gave her a chance. Her story reminds us that progress doesn’t always happen overnight and the most rewarding connections can begin with a little uncertainty. We hope more adopters will open their hearts to shy and fearful dogs. They may need extra time to feel safe, but beneath that fear are wonderful personalities waiting to shine.

Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to see what a dog can become.
