Can anybody find me…some bunny to love? At Animal Friends, we certainly can find you some bunny to love – it’s our specialty! February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month and the spotlight is on all of our adorable, adoptable bunnies.

What could be nicer on a chilly winter’s night than snuggling with a warm ball of fur? Bunnies make wonderful companions!

Each rabbit has a distinct personality and their own likes and

dislikes. Some bunnies are more active than others and love to play with toys especially made for their needs. Others are calmer and just want to be near you to bask in your attention and love.

Animal Friends is hoppin’ with special rabbit events in February.

On Thursday, December 19 – just 12 days shy of the end of the year – Animal Friends’ Low-Cost Spay/Neuter team completed the 10,000th surgery of the 2013! The lucky cat was Jackie, a young black female, brought in to be spayed by her caregiver Rebecca Lafferty. Rebecca found Jackie as a pregnant stray and brought her into her home so she could have a safe place to nurse and care for her kittens.

Here at Animal Friends, we know that spay and neuter programs are the only way to proactively relieve the pet overpopulation problem in our region. In Allegheny County alone, conservative estimates show that 20,000 homeless animals are euthanized every year. The problem is simple: there are too many pets and not enough homes.

Early this year, Animal Friends set a goal: To alter 10,000 pets in 2013. An unprecedented number for our organization, but one that is made possible through an aggressive lowcost spay/neuter program which includes in-house clinics,

“Within the heart of every senior animal lies the singular desire to be loved,” is the motto of our Red Collar Society at Animal Friends. At 12-years-old, sweet Hannah is a member of that distinguished group of “experienced” pets. She’s wellmannered, jumps in the car for a ride, and easily climbs steps. She loves a nap on the couch, and doesn’t seem to mind other dogs. And because of her advanced age, she only needs light exercise, but plenty of hugs and kisses. Hannah is ready to enjoy the sunset of her life in a loving home.

Ginger was a stray brought to Animal Friends. She’s attentive, very social, confident and smart! She knows a few commands, including sit and shake but she would love to learn more with you. Playful and strong, we recommend an active family with no cats or kids under ten for Ginger.

Ulysses Ulysses is a living example of the work we do at Animal Friends. Our Humane Investigations Department confiscated him from a home where he had been severely neglected. Homeless Hoppers

THumper & Princess

These two friends have been together for a long time and while they might not have committed any felonies, they are true partners in crime and need to go home together. These two were left on Animal Friends’ doorstep in a cardboard box. Louise is the more relaxed, laid-back bunny of the pair while Thelma likes to take charge and is a little more outgoing.

Thelma and Louise would like to thank Leona LaValley who gave in memory of Marcie and in honor of Merlin and Pippin.

Thumper is a wonderful young rabbit who has a sweet personality.

Princess is an adorable rabbit who loves to love. Thumper and Princess have lived their whole lives together. They love each other and must go home together.

These two girls came from another shelter as a transfer. If you would love to give these two ladies a home, please come down and meet them.

Enrichment for Rabbits

By Suzanne Denk, Enrichment Specialist An enrichment program for shelter animals can be essential for their wellness and the benefits to the animals are based in science. However for rabbits, enrichment is all about fun. They do not care that enrichment activities decrease stress, stimulate them physically and mentally, give them a feeling of control over their space, and keep them healthy.

A rabbit’s cage space can be enriched with a ceramic tile to stay cool, a cubby to perch on and observe, and wind chimes in the room for their alert ears to enjoy. Tempt rabbit noses and stimulate their brain with a spritz on their cage floor of strawberry or banana extract mixed with water or a pinch of organic dry botanicals.

Rabbits can briefly free roam together for an

exercise play date, to hide in tunnels and to toss oatmeal containers.

Each day a new toy can be provided giving a rabbit the chance to think, learn, and play. Toy options for rabbits are easy, inexpensive and can be thrown away daily keeping the toys unique.

Enrichment toys can include balls with bells, hay cubes, paper fans clipped to cage bars, cardboard tubes with fringed edges, paper lining from alfalfa pellet bags folded with pellets inside, paper twists with treats, organic apple tree branches (check with a local organic farmer in late winter/early spring when they prune), a hay stuffed cardboard tube ball, or hay wrapped with sisal. The rabbits always play enthusiastically.

Remember, enriching the lives of rabbits in our care is not just fun and games. (Just don’t tell them because buns just want to have fun!)

Animal Friends is pleased to host groups of eight or more children for a guided tour, dog safety lesson, and meet-andgreet with a Humane Education dog. Tours are available during the school day, after school, and on Saturdays through mid-May. As tuition we ask that each student please bring a gift for the animals from our supply drive list. AF 125 Dogs 101 For kids age 5+ and their grown-ups Children and dogs can be best buddies, with a relationship based on mutual respect and communication. Families with dogs or who are considering adopting a dog are encouraged to attend this class. Interact with a kid-friendly dog, learn why dogs don’t like hugs, and learn how to tell when a dog is annoyed, happy, nervous, ready to play or ready to chase. Calling all teachers, librarians, and kids who enjoy good books! Do you love the characters in Cynthia Rylant’s books as much as we do? We’re big fans of the many dogs (Mudge!) and cats (Tabby!) in her books. Join Animal Friends this winter or spring for one of our monthly videoconferences featuring Mr. Putter and

Tabby Fly the Plane. We’ll discuss animals’ feelings (especially Tabby’s), what makes a tabby cat a tabby cat, and kindness towards animals. Plus you’ll get to meet one or more of our residents through the monitor!

This is an interactive discussion session for elementary-aged students, not a readaloud, and students should have read the story in advance. For details and registration information for elementary-aged students in schools and homeschools, please see www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.

Brownie Troops

Troops of animal-loving Brownies are invited to Animal Friends to complete steps towards earning the “Pets” Badge. The “Pets” Badge Day includes a guided tour, meet-and-greet with a Humane Education dog, a lesson about how to keep pets looking good, charades, and activity about how much it costs to care for pets.

Details about tuition, registration information, reservation guidelines, and steps 1-5 of the “Pets” Badge are

Date: Saturday, April 12 TIME: 3 pm – 5 pm TUITION: (1) $3 per Brownie and (2) at least one troop-made blanket (see website for details) per troop AF 122 Canine Courage For families whose child is afraid of dogs Animal Friends’ volunteers with their owned, child-friendly Canine Good Citizen (CGC) dogs are available to assist families whose child is afraid of dogs. Animal Friends will provide a meeting space and CGC dog and handler. The family will provide a therapist who will run the sessions. Parents should contact their child’s pediatrician who may be able to recommend a therapist to work with the family. It will be the family’s financial responsibility to pay the therapist for his/her time. Classes for Young Pet Lovers AF 129 Dog Care Merit Badge

workshop for Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts who love dogs are welcome to earn their Dog Care Merit Badge with Animal Friends. Boy Scouts are invited to attend this workshop this spring so that this upcoming summer they can spend time caring for and training their own dog.

Scouts will be required to (1) complete specific requirements before attending and (2) bring the following to the workshop: their blue card, Dog Care booklet, and workbook. Please see the Animal Friends University webpage for requirements and registration details.

Enrollment is limited to the first eight Boy Scouts who register. Please pack a lunch.

Workshop: Interactive Videoconference for Elementary Students

What are the five things that all pets in Pennsylvania need in order to have a healthy habitat and adequate care? Learn from our “animal cop,” an Animal Friends staff member who is a Humane Society Police Officer.

Meet an animal that the officer rescued and hear about the animal’s story. We’ll make connections to the book Buddy Unchained, a rescue tale by Daisy Bix. (Participants should have read the book before the videoconference. We will mail a complimentary copy of the book to the first five schools who register by April 30.) Students will have the opportunity to ask question of the officer and should prepare them in advance.

Workshop: Interactive Videoconference for Secondary Students

Our “animal cop,” an Animal Friends staff member who is a Humane Society Police Officer, will discuss what she/he uses on the job: equipment, legal knowledge, and skills. The officer will discuss what “21st Century Skills” she/he uses on the job: adapt to change, interact effectively with others, and work effectively with people from a range of backgrounds. The officer will discuss how she/he uses the 4 C’s: critical thinking/problem solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity/innovation. Meet an animal that the officer rescued and hear about the animals’ story, ask questions of the officer (please prepare questions in advance), and participate in a role play scenario.

Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification Prep Class

This six week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people and dog friendly and have basic obedience training. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler.

Focus will be placed on team compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. The class will include a

visit with your dog to a local facility for a therapy visit. This class will prepare you and your dog for the Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification test. An assessment interview is required prior to enrollment in this class. Candlelight Remembrance Services

Companion animals enrich our lives in so many ways and anyone who has lost a beloved pet knows the sadness and emptiness that accompanies that loss. Join others for a candlelight remembrance and celebration ceremony to hear interfaith and spiritual words of comfort and pay tribute to those wonderful animal friends that will be sorely missed. All are invited to remain afterwards for discussion. Children are welcome when accompanied by a parent/guardian. These ceremonies are hosted by a member of the Pittsburgh Clergy. Spooky, a sleek, limber cat, has had it tough the past couple years. His previous owner passed away suddenly and for a while he lived in a house by himself with only short visits from family members to give him food and water. When he came to Animal Friends, he was confused and did not trust people. But with the love and care of our volunteers, Spooky is now a happy, healthy gentleman looking to spend the rest of his life in a loving home.

Fountain Fountain was not well socialized as a kitten and can be quite shy at times, but will eventually warm up to you as you spend time with her. Piñata This four-year-old sweetheart was rescued, along with many others, from an overcrowded and unsanitary home. She has some scarring on her eyes, but she seems to see pretty well. She’s tiny, gentle and quiet, but she’s getting braver by the day. She loves a good scratch on the head, a tasty treat, and playing laser tag. Piñata is asking for a chance to have a normal life.

Ve t e r i n a r y I n f o Students from the Veterinary Assistant program at the Beaver County Career and Technology Center visited Animal Friends to learn about our life-saving work and the role of veterinary technicians in shelter medicine. We enjoyed having such an animal-loving group of teens here to meet some of our residents!

Animal Friends recently became a partner in the Veterinary Science Initiative (VSI). VSI, developed by Dr. Brittany Watson Tisa and De Daltorio of the Charleston Animal Society, teaches PA state standards through the lens of veterinary medicine. This program can be adapted to meet the needs of any high school classroom (components include science, reading, art, and role play) and will appeal to all animal lovers, not just those intending a career in the field. Here at Animal Friends we are fortunate to meet many animal-loving kids and teens, and one of their more common career interests is veterinary medicine. Students looking to learn more will enjoy two books:

ER Vets: Life in an Animal Emergency Room

by Donna M. Jackson With over 80 pages, this book includes details about emergency cases, the role of an emergency room veterinarian and veterinary technician, and many photos – of animals, x-rays, and even surgeries. Horse lovers will enjoy the chapter about a newborn foal, and readers will cheer for the happy endings of the dogs and cats who receive life-saving care. (The level of detail in the surgery photos and one case without a happy ending make this book a recommended read for teens.)

Vet Emergencies 24/7 by Susan Evento This photo-packed book will appeal to ages 9-12.

Most of the cases involve a great variety of dogs and cats but also feature a rabbit, ferret, hamster, turtle, python, and hedgehog. The fantastic layout – pages that look like a vet’s files – makes this an interesting read!

Animal Friends’ Therapets Beowulf: A Big Fan of the Therapets Program

By Sandy Mulligan, Animal Friends Volunteer Ever since he was a puppy, our Great Pyrenees, Beowulf, has been a rock star in fur. He has a larger than life stature and a personality to match. People stop their cars in the middle of the street to watch him walk past; tourists from foreign countries take their picture with him.

Since being adored is what Beowulf does best, I often wondered about training him to become a therapy dog. But, I knew being irresistible wasn’t enough.

He’d need to be comfortable and calm in new situations and environments.

When I learned about Animal Friends’ prep classes for the new Therapets program, I decided it was now or never.

An initial evaluation confirmed my hunch that Beowulf had the temperament to excel as a therapy dog. Then we went to work in the classroom, brushing up on obedience commands and practicing exposure to things like wheelchairs, walkers, unexpected noises and erratic behavior. The instructors gave each

Our favorite part of the class was the site visit, when we got to try out the experience of being a therapy team. We went to Chatham University to visit students who were feeling homesick or stressed.

Beowulf bypassed the nose-level lunch buffet – thanks to the obedience practice – and immediately began working the room. He got an invitation to snuggle in a dorm, and I’m pretty sure he ended up in a few Facebook posts. The interaction was meaningful for me, too.

Beowulf and I are very excited about becoming certified and working as a Therapets team. Bringing a smile to someone who’s lonely, sad or struggling is a wonderful experience. But doing it with your best friend at your side?

We know how daunting it can be when you lose or find a pet.

We are pleased to offer a new and unique community resource for lost pets in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. Animal Friends is proud to present www.LostMyPet. org.

Through this FREE resource, Animal Friends is able to help dogs, cats, and

If you have lost or found a pet, simply fill out an online form by completing these few easy steps: • Click on corresponding “lost my pet” or “found a pet” links, which will direct you to a page to register your lost or found pet report • You will be asked to provide contact information as well as animal information • Enter as many details as possible about the pet you are looking for or have found. Including a picture is very helpful.

With the help of technology, potential matches for your lost or found animal will automatically be sent directly to your email, round the clock!

Most importantly, always tag your pet and license your dog! Dog licenses are required by law. And, licensing your dog increases the chance that you will be reunited in the unfortunate event that he or she is lost. Make sure that all of your pets have an appropriate collar, identification tag and license on at all times. You should purchase a license for your dog every year – it’s the best $8 you may ever spend!
