Family Legacy Lives On IN 1906, BROTHERS IN LAW WALTER VAN DE KAMP AND LAWRENCE FRANK OPENED A DUTCH POTATO CHIP STAND AT THE CORNER OF SEVENTH AND GRAND IN WHAT WE NOW KNOW AS DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, WHERE THE MAIN METRO STATION SITS. IT WOULD BE ABOUT ANOTHER 20 YEARS BEFORE THIS WILD WEST TOWN WOULD SEE A CITY HALL.

From there, they grew. Walt Disney built his studio on Hyperion in the 1930s, but it didn’t include a commissary, so there was no place to eat. Tam O’Shanter was the only viable restaurant in the area, so he would come for lunch every day, five days a week. He introduced Frank and Van de Kamp to Hollywood set designer Harry Oliver.

That same year, when Snow White debuted in theaters, in a little test kitchen in the back of Tam O’Shanters, which now serves as the liquor room, the first patch of Lawry’s seasoned salt was born, and in 1938, the partners opened Lawry’s Prime Rib in Beverly Hills with a strict dress code. The family sold the seasoning to Lipton in 1979. By the 1960s, the Tam was a hash house, a diner. It served breakfast, lunch and dinner with an open counter and the kitchen behind it. They changed the name briefly to The Great Scott, and took away the counter and under went a facelift. In July, it will be 100 years since the dusty roadside stop welcomed wayfarers. The Tam O’Shanter has remained in the family, now owned by fourth generation Ryan O’Melveny Wilson, CEO of Lawry’s Restaurants Inc. and great-grandson of Lawrence Frank. A passionate chef by training who spent years in theTam’s kitchen as a dishwasher and prep cook, Wilson now oversees the entire family operation that includes five restau rants domestically stretching to Orange County with the Five Crowns and Side Door, as well

“The brothers and business partners had fallen in love with the Scottish countryside and wanted to do a themed restaurant that looked like a Scottish country manner,” Lindquist tells the story. “Harry Oliver said, ‘I can design that.’ So he did the first designs of the restaurant. The original turret that you now see from the Los Feliz side was part of the original building. Because Disney came here every day, so did the animators. They sketched the buildingand that became Snow White’s house. If you look at pictures of the original building and Snow White’s house in the 1937 Disney film, you’ll see it.”

Then around 1919, they met a fast-talking real estate agent who suggested that because movie stu dios were starting to pop up in Los Feliz, like the Walt Disney studio on Hyperion and Griffith Park where everybody was film ing Westerns, they should set up shop there because it was goingto become downtown Los Angeles. Los Feliz Boulevard wasa dirt“Soroad.the brothers-in-law took his advice and opened a roadside stand on that spot in 1922 and called it Tam O’Shanter,” says the restaurant’s current general manager John Lindquist, who lovingly tells the story of one of L.A.’s old est restaurants. “They sold potato chips, hot dogs and hamburgers. It may have been a dirt road, but it was a busy thoroughfare from the studios to Los Angeles.”

THERE ARE SO MANY DAILY PRESSURES ON OUR LIVES AND THE IDEA OF BEING ABLE TO COME INTO A RESTAURANT LIKE THE TAM O’SHANTER, THE QUINTESSENTIAL PUBLIC HOUSE THAT’S ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, IS IMPORTANT.““

“On a spectrum, there are two approaches to restaurants,” says Wilson, whose business has sur vived two world wars and the last major gas crisis. “You’re either trying to have something with generational staying power or you’re operating much like a nightclub, where it's a very specific time period. You’re trading off what’s super trendy at the moment or a great real estate play, and you’re going to operate for three to five years and you’re out. I’m concerned with people's everdiminishing attention span and the challenge of running restaurants in California, and chef culture, always wanting something fresh and new and hip in that celebrity craze, rather than fundamentally just offering a good dining experience. The key to the longevity ofthe business is a commitment to our coworkers and treating every one fairly. There’s no nepotism here, and we spent a lot of time making sure this is a great place to work in an industry that is diffi cult, challenging and physically demanding. We’ve been here for 100 years and look forward to continuing the tradition of cele brating any of life’s moments.”

“It’s tremendously important to keep these iconic restaurants alive,” he says. “It is one of the many fabrics of our community. There are so many daily pressures on our lives and the idea of beingable to come into a restaurant like the Tam O’Shanter, the quintes sential public house that’s accessi ble to all, is important. Far too often, restaurants are distant and expensive, and people feel they’re not attainable on a regular basis.”

v

“One of my favorite memories of the Tam O’Shanter is that it was one of the first restaurants I cooked in professionally,” Wilson tells L.A. Weekly. “I worked every Wednesday and Friday night on the line, and learned how a professional kitchen functions, and it gave me my first taste of a career that I am very passionate about. I learned some good habits thereand a few bad habits.”

“With the gasoline prices, it’s just about a tank of gas to get up here from Southern California and once you’re here, you really don’t have to go very far to enjoy yourself,” Sorgenfrei continues. “There’s the wine region and there are tasting rooms within the town itself, and a variety of different kinds of dining.”

Harry’s Night Club and Beach Bar downtown closed a few years ago, but recently reopened under new management and it is completely remodeled and he calls it a “spectacular transformation.” The bar offers nightly live music and a large dance floor. The mayor also mentions the Oyster Loft and Wooly’s Beach Bar and Grill downtown, and that there are many outdoor dining options.

A few years ago, the city helped finance the Pismo Preserve, nearly 900 acres of trails with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean for dawn to dusk walking and biking pleasure. They’ve spruced up their quaint downtown palm tree-lined area as well with pavers instead of sidewalks and new street lighting. There are lots of wonderful new eateries, bars and surf shops – your typical beach town downtown — and in addition to the boutique stores, there’s a mall full of outlet stores where you can purchase 40 of your favorite brands at discounted prices.

Waage says the outdoors was their calling card during the Pandemic when airlines were shuttered and people wanted an escape. It was then that many discovered Pismo Beach. “A lot of places closed down, but we did not. Waage says every one of them has its version ofclam chowder since Pismo was once known as the Clam Capital of the World when clams were in abundance. Waage explains that, although the area’s clams declined about 30 years ago, they are in the process of returning.

“We helped fund a study through Cal Poly State University and they’ve been monitoring the comeback. They’re not big enough to harvest yet, but they are coming back,” Waage says. “But we have the bestclamYouchowder.”canget clam chowder on the newly renovated pier as well. “It’s not quite like the Hollywood sign in Southern California,” the mayor says with a laugh, “but it’s getting close. It’s a popular place where people hang out and relax. There’s a play area forchildren and it’s a gateway to the beach,” Waage says, adding that they’ve installed artwork and new restrooms on the pier. The mayor also mentions the safety of the city with its award-winning police department and wonderful fire department and that they are undertaking the repaving of a third of the roads in the city.

With weather somewhere in between Southern and Northern California, just like its location, it’s the ideal vacation spot, particularly during summer and fall. But if you want to see the Monarch Butterflies during their annual visit, you will want to come from late October to February when the butter flies cluster in the limbs of a grove of Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach. Pismo’s colony is one of the largest in the nation, some years hosting an average of 25,000 butterflies.

Sorgenfrei believes Pismo should be on every-one’s“It’sradar.the perfect place for a romantic getaway for two and it’s a great place for a family,” Sorgenfrei says. v

Pismo was on a lot of big celebrities’ radar. Even Bugs Bunny’s in a 1957 cartoon. After he and Daffy Duck made it through a tunnel he thought he was in Pismo Beach and he said, “all the clams we can eat.”

SOCALLIFEMAG.COM 30 THE GOURMAND OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD Outstanding in the Field A Roaming Restaurant Brings Shared Connection

PULLED OFF ONTO A DUSTY ROAD IN A HARSH LOW desert area I never knew existed until an invite to Outstanding in the Field arrived via email. Myinstructions were to bring my own plate, come hungry, and be ready to break “bread” with strangers.

SOCALLIFEMAG.COM 31 THE GOURMAND OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD

For many years I admired these long table dinnerson social media with hundreds of people celebrating thegood life in destinations all over the world. Today I wasarriving for a meal at an unusual farm namedSomewhere in the Desert, in arid land north of Palm Springs near trendy Yucca Valley. This Mojave Desertlandscape had me wondering how anything could surviveand grow here.In the early 1990s, Outstanding in the Field was anovel idea showcasing farms on the menu. Today,Outstanding in the Field pairs with farms and chefs toset the table at farms, beaches, vineyards, mountain tops, city streets, fishing docks, and other extraordinary sites, offering shared connection for one time in one place –an experience that will never be replicated. Almost like an ephemeral piece of art, the experience is a celebration of humanity encouraging a family-style meal and livelydiscussion at the table.

Farmers and hosts of the day, Gardenia Ramirez andEric Wilson of Somewhere in the Desert, shared how they combat the local climate to grow produce by building soil health - capturing the moisture with hay bales

Founded by Santa Cruz-based chef and environmental artist Jim Denevan, the one-night pop-up restaurantsare brought to source ingredients while helping dinersconnect to the land and sea and learn where their food comes from, all while celebrating the hard workers whomake the meal possible – chefs, farmers, vintners, brewers, and more. To date, Outstanding in the Field has hostedmeals in more than 18 different countries. Greeted by beauties in country straw hats and prairie-style dresses with a Pinot Noir Rose from Sonoma County’s Ernest Vineyards, I snapped photos of a barn that framed the dreamy land and table-scape while mingling with others over more libations like a 54French Saison from Las Palmas, our favorite local beer and wine bar in Palm Springs. An entourage of pre-dinnerbites ensued in and around the farm, like fried plantains stuffed with mozzarella and beet aguachile atop cucumber Asslices.Iadmired the surrounding San BernardinoMountains, I chatted with an older couple from Michigan over Baja-style fish tacos. The pair follow thedinners all over California. Nearby, a happy couple who got engaged right before the event was surrounded by alltheir elated friends who surprised them by showing upfor this special communal dinner. During a farm tour Imet several pairs of girlfriends who flew in to celebrate -perhaps the end of pandemic fatigue or socializing in anoutdoor “safe” setting.

Thirty minutes north of Kailua-Kona International Airport, the Ocean Tower Hilton Grand Vacation on the grounds of the Hilton Waikoloa Village affords you all the amenities of home with a complete kitchen, stacked washer and dryer and upgraded and modern furnishings. It’s on the north end of the resort and is a little bit of a hike from where you will either self-park ($39/night) or valet ($55/night). However, a convenient(slow moving) tram or boat provides you an alternativeto walking. The MAKAI, Palace Tower, Suites and Ocean Tower are all connected by covered walkways. Known as the museum walkway, you’ll find much of the 1,800 pieces of exquisite artwork depicting the cultures of Polynesia, Melanesia, Burma, Indonesia, China and Thailand. There’s more artwork scattered throughoutvarious areas on the resort.

The Kona pool area affords a great sunset viewing point. This is also one of the access points to the beach. Just past the buoys of the resort’s saltwater lagoon is an inlet cove teeming with colorful fish swim ming around the coral. It is best to avoid stepping on the coral; rather aspire to stay afloat so as not to damage the reef. Be mindful of tide times to avoid high tide, riptides and Resortcurrents.activities include Paddleboard Yoga, Hawaiian cultural classes, Spin, Core, Tai Chi and a host of fitness and craft classes throughout the day. The Kohala Spa, a fully-equipped fitness center, Legends of Hawaiian Luau and two championship golf courses round out the resort amenities and offerings.

If you’re not inclined to be exposed to UV rays all day, cabanas are available to rent. A huge bonus of this prop erty is the Dolphin Learning Ce nter located adjacent to the Lagoon Grill. Here you can enjoy watching the Dolphins frolicking while you enjoy a bite. For a grab-and-go kind of meal (think pre-packaged poke, chickentenders and fries or pizza), check out the OrchardMarketplace.

A half mile walk from the main lobby of the Hilton will lead you to the Kings Shops on Waikoloa Beach Drive where you can have authentic Hawaiian Shave Ice, grab some fish and chips or even shop at Tiffany’s. The adjacent Queen’s Marketplace has groceries, more shopsand restaurants and even a movie theater. Exploring the area without leaving the resort is easi ly accomplished by heading up the walkway past the Kona Pool and Kamuela Provision Company and takingthe stairs onto the black sand and coral-filled beach to explore the tidepools during low tide. If you’re luckyyou’ll see a sea turtle (or two) lazily floating in the shallows. The rocks and corals make for treacherous walk

WHERE TO STAY

WHERE TO PLAY With its myriad of pools and even a salt water lagoon to snorkel with colorful fish and turtle sightings, you never have to leave the resort grounds. The Kona pool boasts a 175 foot water slide, with smaller slides for kids of all ages available at the Kohala pool. Pool-side cocktails and smoothies are available at the Lagoon Grill, Kona Barand the Kohala Bar (only Friday - Sunday for Kohala).

Be sure to hit up Nui Breakfast at the Hilton Waikoloa Village for their delectable fluffy (large) pancakessmothered in Nutella and topped with chopped macadamia nuts. For a lighter fare, consider their locally-made granola served in a half-papaya with lilikoi (passion fruit) yogurt and a drizzle of local honey. If you’re inthe mood for a mimosa, give their POG (passion fruit, orange juice, guava juice) mimosa a try. Their coffee is,but naturally, 100% Kona. Pool-side fare for those hanging-around-at-theresort-all-day days includes burgers, Hawaiian bowls, and salads. Think of this food like amusement park food; convenient, overpriced and fairly forgettable. Want something light yet substantial? Try the Lagoon Salad, a hearty portion of garbanzo beans, beets, mixed greens, tomatoes, avocado and cucumber with furikake chicken bites and a tasty papaya seed dressing. Thirsty? Check out Lawrence’s 180 Seconds, a combination of mango rum, coconut rum, tropical juices and grenadine; caution - it goes down fast and smooth! Be sure to try the coconut smoothie for a nonalcoholic option. While the Mai Tais are typical of resort-style cocktails, they are the best bang for your buck; at $15 a pop, the piñacoladas and other blended drinks drink (and taste) likea non-alcoholic smoothie and leave you wanting more.

WHERE TO EAT

For an off-the-beaten-path exceptional coffee (orcocktails, depending on your mood), try HiCOHawaiian Coffee Company in Kailua-Kona. Tucked away in an industrial part of town, be sure to try their Ube Latte with their house-made Ube (purple sweetpotato) syrup and save room for their delicious Avo

Consider Buddha’s Cup Coffee and Tea Farm on Bishop Road in Holualoa. On your way up the mountain, you’ll encounter at least a couple of other coffee farms should you want to compare. You can call ahead for a tour, or simply wander around their expansive grounds that are home to more than just coffee plants. Chickens, a couple of peacocks, a handful of parrots, goats, miniature horses and even a couple of cats rule the roost in these parts.

The owner, Manny, might remind you of a pirate if you can picture him with a parrot on his shoulder. But don’t let appearances be deceptive. He knows his coffee and has been lauded for the quality and flavor profile of his Budda’s Cup 100% pure Kona coffee. DAY TRIPPING TO HILO

Downtown Hilo is working on being quaint withits assortment of stores and restaurants. It’s a bit rundown looking, but it boasts a fabulous Farmers Market (open from 7am - 3pm, 7 days a week, with ‘Big Market Days’ on Wednesday and Saturday) withdelectable tropical fruits and vegetables, locally sourced BBQ sauces and rubs, fresh honey and any number of handmade jewelry and your typically touristy wraps and t-shirts. Be sure to try coconut water from a coconut chopped open in front of you. If you’ve never tried it before, definitely ask for a coconut that has flesh that can be scraped off the sides once you’re done drinking the water. Not as sweet as the Indian or Southeast Asian coconut water, this is nevertheless a refreshing drink on a hot day. Even though Italian food is probably the last thing you’d think of getting in an oceanfront Hawaiiantown, check out Cafe Pesto, Hilo Bay in the historic S. Hata building. The farmers market vegetable saffron risotto features roasted red pepper, artichoke, caper olives and rainbow chard all sourced from the Farmer’s Market two doors down. The heritage pork bolognese with Kaunamano pork, local beef and red wine marinara with basil linguini is sure to satisfy the most picky of palates while the woodfired Luau Pizza; wood-fired personal pizza with Kalua pork, smoked mozzarella, grilled pineapple and sweet onion received a nod on Guy Fieri’s Diners Drive Ins and Dives. The pork was perfectly cooked and crispy, but the pizza dough was bland and didn’t have enough ‘spring.’ The grilled pineapple chunks were a goodfoil for the sweet onion.

No trip to the island of Hawai’i is complete without a day trip to Hilo. Consider taking the ocean route, which might add anywhere from 15 - 25 minutes to your drive time but is well worth the expansive ocean views and innumerable gorgeous gulches with rushing rivers and verdant foliage in greens so vibrant youwould think it fake.

Toast on sweet bread and topped with pickled car rots, hemp seeds and furikake along with the requisite Foravocado.dinner, consider heading over to the Queen’sMarketplace to Kuleana Rum Shack best known for its Big Island-made Rum Agricole; rum made with pressed cane sugar juice instead of molasses. If you think you know Mai Tais - think again. You haven’t had a ‘proper’ Mai Tai, unless you’ve tried theirs. Featuring three of their rums- Huihui, Nanea and Rum Agricole, this perfectly balanced, no-fruit juice containing Kuleana Mai Tai will tickle your tastebuds and leave you wanting seconds in no time. If a Mai Tai doesn’t float your boat, consider the Waikoloa Sour. Another flawlessly mixed, perfectly balanced explosion of flavor for your palate. Alternatively, con sider their mojitos on draft! For starters, consider the Mochiko chicken, korean-inspired perfectly crisped boneless chicken thighsin mochiko flour (flour made from mochi rice whichis sticky and glutinous and naturally gluten free) andBig Island Cauliflower Wings which have a zingy bitethanks to their house-made buffalo sauce which is complemented by the house dill ranch dressing.

Follow this with the Puhelu Steak and Mash; a 12 oz (best cooked medium rare) Black Angus strip loinwith mushrooms and cracked peppercorns, a Nanea (rum) demi-glace and a kiawe (Hawaii’s mesquite)smoked mash with just the perfect touch of smoki ness without being overwhelming. To satisfy yoursweet tooth, check out the Lilikoi (passion fruit)crème brûlée for a creamy, dreamy bite of perfection. If you’re looking for something more casual, con sider the food stall along the side of MamalohoaHighway called Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs. The line of people at any point of the day and the delec tably fragrant smoke smells will give it away! Smoked brisket and ribs and delicious BBQ chicken areserved either a la carte or as a combo with rice, corn and even with their smoked chicken mac and cheese or potato mac salad. Your tastebuds will be singing before this meal is over. More than likely the owner, Randy, will be the one taking your order and welcom ing you to his little corner of the Highway with a smile and a quip. His homemade seasonings and BBQ sauce is something you’ll want to pack up and take with you, so plan to check your luggage so you can stock up on delicious, sweet and tart BBQ sauce. This is a must-do stop on your Big Island adventure.

A week is not nearly enough time to see all there is to see on this prolific Island. With its different weather systems, it is a wise idea to pack at least a light jacket or sweatshirt. While Kailua-Kona boasts of the tropical balmy 80-degree weather we expect of Hawaii, a mere 30-40 minutes away, Waimea could be rainy and windy. Similarly, the weather at Volcano National Park can be 15-20 degrees cooler. Before heading off the Big Island, Hawaii’s Agricultural Inspection will be scanning your checked bags at the airport on behalf of the US Department of Agriculture to ensure that no banned items (fruits, plants, live snails etc.) make it back to the mainland, bringing with them any fruit flies or other hazardous plant insects or diseases.

If you’re short on time, consider doing a 12-mileloop of Falls, Caves and Gardens. Just under two miles from downtown Hilo, start with Rainbow Falls; named so because of the way the sun bounces off the water casting rainbows. These are best seen first thing in the morning but are majestic any time of day. Nexthop over to Pe'epe'e Falls; just a few miles down the road and be sure to read about the story of the Demigod Maui and his mother Hina. From the falls, head toward Kaumana Caves; parking is on the south side of the road, but the cave entrance is via a steep staircase which is actually the collapsed skylight of a lava tube known to be 25 miles long as a result of the 188 eruptions of the volcano Mauna Loa, is on the right. Water dripping from the ceiling of the lava tube is typical, making for a treache rous trek in nearly pitch darkness. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight if you want to explore. This is not for the weak of ankle. Finish your tour with a trip tothe 24-acre Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens by the bay, named after Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani. These peaceful gardens offer the largest Edo-style ornamental gardens outside of Japan with ponds, stone lanterns, bridges, pagodas and a Japanese teahouse all surrounded by sprawling, majestic Banyan trees. Banyan Tree Drive is a canopyof Banyan Trees along the Waiākea Peninsula along the coast of Hilo that were intentionally planted by the Hilo Parks Commission dating back to 1933. These have plaques bearing the name of the celebrity who planted the tree and the date that the tree was planted. Names you’ll find are FDR, Amelia Earhart and even Richard Nixon among others. If driving up a mountain to see an active volcano isn’t your jam, consider touring the nearby familyowned Kona Coffee plantations. Bishop Road in Holualoa boasts a handful of Kona coffee plantations, most of which offer tours and tastings. Be sure to con-tinue up the drive (slowly - most of this is along a sin-gle lane wide road) to The Buddha’s Cup Plantation.Reservations for the tours can be made online in advance. But you can also just choose to wander onto their grounds, take your own little tour, interact withthe menagerie of animals (cats, parrots, miniaturehorses, goats, chickens or even peacocks) that theyhave on the property. Ask to try the Hibiscus tea and be sure to sample their macadamia nut rum cake. This delectably moist cake is the perfect complement to a hot cup of their award-winning Kona!

I’ve found it’s no secret that an essential quality of any successful business lies within its ability to not only forge new relationships, but to maintain and grow them as well, Rosemary has done that throughout her career. Rosemary Allison is the reminder that relationships matter, being an advocate for her clients and their homes matters. There is NO OTHER REALTOR that you should call to represent you in selling your home. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture... Once we listed our home with Rosemary, she not only found our buyer within 2 weeks from her steller advertising, but her connections provided our buyer the lender who could help her purchase our home in less than 30 days. Rosemary Allison, we cannot “thank you and your team” enough for your professionalism in not only to the end. Your work ethic and tenacity to get the job done was incredible. My family and I are forever indebted to you for seeing this through.

As corny as it sounds, Pleasanton is aptly named. Walking to the car rental location, it’s understandable why people live here. If you want see what the American Dream looks like, walk three blocks in any direction, and you will find it, white picket fences and all. It’s fun walking down main street during the day or night, visiting shops and eateries. We happened to land our visit during one of the classic car hot rod weekends held at the local fair grounds, so not only did we get to enjoy the town’s charm, we had the added bonus of dudes showing off their vehicles like a scene out of “American Graffiti.”

A must-stop is the drivethrough Meadowlark Dairy which is known for its soft serve ice cream flavors. No matter the time of day,

We ate dinner at Oyo’s – a lively restaurant and bar featuring South American tapas and Latin Style dishes of Guyanese heritage. They are known for their paella, jerk chicken, and Guyanese cook-up rice (what self-respecting carnivore would pass up a dish including chicken, brisket and pig tail?).

Adam, an engineer who has spent the last 15 years working and raising his family in Livermore, happens to live across from one of the wineries we will visit. Little did I know that Livermore is home to the Lawrence Livermore & Sandia National Laboratories, government organizations whose main job is to maintain the nuclear stockpile so that it is ready if necessary. It’s one of only two national security labs in the U.S., the other one being in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The labs are a city of just under 100,000 people tasked with protecting our country. Adam gives us insight into the Tri-Valley area and the stops on our itinerary that he likes, includ ing where we are staying, The Rose Hotel, which was developed and owned by the now late John Madden and his brothers. After a short 50-minute flight, we arrive at almost 1:00am, and thankfully my partner had the foresight to get a car service. It’s worth the money to have the driver waiting for us to take our luggage and sweep us off in the comfortable roomy Suburban at this time of morning, arriving in Pleasanton in record time. STAY The Rose Hotel is even nicer in person than in its photos. The hotel is situated in the historic district, Victorian in style, and appropriate considering this town was founded in 1892. It’s only 3-stories and even in the late hour, I couldn’t help taking the welcom ing curved staircase in the middle of lobby up to the second floor where our room awaited. What surprised me most about the spacious, well-appointed rooms was the abundance of amenities.

www.oyopleasanton.com

www.rosehotel.net

Everything is well conceived. The plethora of charging stations; the French press coffee set-up in the room, a sanitary and pleasant variation from the usual coffee makers; the ear plugs, gift packaged chocolate mints and water bottles by our bedside; the wine opener at-the-ready with the ice bucket, water and wine glasses in the foyer of the room; the matches with a tea candle in the bathroom among the sewing kit, nail file, cotton pads and Q-tips in glass dispensaries in lieu of the usual paper and plastic packaged boxes; weather cards; and a desk complete with a proper pen, and branded notebook and letter opener for guests to use. Peet’s coffee awaits us in the lobby in the morning, with a European-style breakfast.

We started our day with a ride to Danville, one the of the wealth iest suburbs of San Francisco and Oakland. It’s pristine and clearly well thought out. The Blackhawk Museum, established in 1988, includes a classic car exhibit where Adam’s father, a car enthusiast, would frequent every week, developing a bond with the other regu lars. Figuring we’d hit this section first, there are impressive twin Duesenbergs at the entrance. I don’t personally know a lot about cars, but even I enjoyed the dis play of historically significant automobiles, specialty collector cars and vehicles from movies. The museum rotates the display of cars, so guests will see new vehicles when they visit. There is something for every interest at this museum that houses five galleries of exhibits. The Spirit of the Old West Gallery explores the life of the Plains Indians up through the 19th century westward expansion of settlers into the frontier with exhibitions devoted to indigenous culture and heritage. This includes the largest dioroma that I’ve ever seen. The Art of Africa Gallery showcases subSaharan African culture through wooden sculpture, ceremonial ritual, and music. The Into China Gallery features reproductions and fine works of art from China, including the Imperial Dragon Throne and an intricate model of the Forbidden City. And the World of Nature gallery is an expansive collection of more than 600 species of carefullycurated animals on display. www.blackhawkmuseum.org

The town of Danville is a combination of historic buildings blended in with contemporary shops. There is a Saturday Farmer’s Market by the old train tracks, and the streets are lined with one eatery after another. We lunched at Cocina Hermanas, a Mexican food restaurant with a California influence. Everything is fresh, local and homemade, includ ing the chorizo in the most delicious breakfast burrito I’ve ever had. We can highly recommend the Agua Chile tuna tartare and the Birria soft tacos as well.

there is always a long line up for the sweet treat. The receptionist at the Rose says there wouldn’t be any traffic in Pleasanton if it weren’t for the dairy. www.meadowlarkdairy.com

Livermore is home to 60 winer ies and 96,000 acres of vineyards. In 1844, Livermore Valley was established by Robert Livermore, a British sailor, who planted grapes and began making wine. Wente followed with its vine yard in the 1880s. Charles Wetmore, the first Valedictorian from Cal, got a job as a journalist on the wine beat. From there, he met the Wente family, who hired him to run their fledgling operation. Today the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family operate 2,000 acres of vineyards and carry the honor of being recognized as the

Another winery of note is Las Positas. Their 20 acres of vines, under the tutelage of winemaker Brent Amos, has 17 different varietals growing and yields an impressive 5,000 cases a year. Each wine in their tasting flight was as good as the next, and how they display them is unique.
