GLOSSARY OF TERMS Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): Is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Birth Weight EPD (BW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk): Is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

In other words, it is that part of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Total Maternal EPD (TM): The expected overall difference in weaning weight pounds of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for total maternal. The total materanl EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indication of the size of calf a bull’s daughter will wean. The maternal milk EPD is combined with half of the weaning growth EPD to produce the total maternal EPD. This is a prediction of the total genetic influence that a sire will have on his daughter’s progeny.

How Do I Use EPD’s?

Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd. You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight (WW) EPD of +10 and Bull B has a WW of +60. What does that mean? How can you use those EPDs to choose between the two bulls? If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50). So, if you were interested in producing heavier calves, Bull B would be the one to choose. Remember, EPDs evaluate group average and offspring’s performance. They cannot predict individual performance or weights.

These are the first calves from our new herdsire HF Kodiak 132W and we are really happy with them. These bulls were all raised on grass and mothers milk except 1Y who we had weaned early to go to local shows. They have the best weaning weights we have ever had and just keep on coming. Two are by one of our own bulls that is out of a dam that produced the top gaining bull at the test station a few years ago. We have been in the Angus business for 47 years and feel that our bulls are predictable and fit into our philosophy of low maintenance cattle raised in a ranch environment, bush pasture in the summer and a hay diet in the winter. These calves have been fed at Lazy B feedlot again as we have for the past seventeen years.

Welcome to the 2nd annual Northern Alliance Bull Sale. We are again proud to be part of this event and partnering with a great group of purebred breeders. Over the years, the cattle business has introduced us to an exceptional group of people, both commercial cattlemen and purebred breeders. It’s these people and their families that make the cattle business in British Columbia; they have been the best we have every worked or learned with. Over the past few months, we have seen some of the best cattle prices since before BSE, we salute those who stayed with the business, knowing it hasn’t been easy.

It is an exciting time to be in the cattle business, cattle numbers are low and demand is high. Many of you have retained heifers and are looking for bulls with calving ease and still maintain performance. We have for your selection this year a great group of heifer bulls. The calves sired by Red Northline Dillinger have hit the ground running with easy birth weights and have gained well in our on farm feed test. The Red Northline Rev bull has produced some really good working females. We are now calving some of his granddaughters and they are showing all the signs of carrying the maternal traits we breed for.

The mothers of our bulls are a sound, no nonsense group of females. This is a maternal herd, we look for calving ease, moderate frames and a profitable weaning weights. While reading the EPD’s and write ups on the bulls you will see a lot of calving ease. As we calve in January and February we have no time for hard calving cows or slow calves. When walking through our herd you will find, good feet, good udders and good temperaments. The traditional Red Angus Cow has proven time and again, she can get her calve up and going faster than any breed out there.

All Red Moon bulls are fed at home. We do not have exaggerated weight gains; we have gains that promote healthy growth and development in our bulls. They are fed a balanced ration not exceeding 1% of the pens average weigh, along with locally grown, dry mixed forage. Our feeding program is geared to a 3lb a day gain, as of the January weigh our bulls are on target with the pen average being 3.18lbs per day. Mineral is fed free choice, all vaccinations are current and the bulls are weighed monthly. Weights can be viewed on our web page www.redmoonangus.com.

The first Northline Dillinger 17W calf born. 10Y comes from one of our best mature mother cows. She is deep bodied and carries the maternal strength we require in our mother cows. This bull has a low birth weight EPD while maintaining a higher than average weaning weight EPD. He is rated in the top 30% for Maternal calving ease EPD and the top 20% for marbling. An average weaning weight gain of 3.36 lbs. The Dam Moon 32R was a prior 4H project for our son’s best friend, she topped the 4H classes as well as the Ranchers Choice classes in Vanderhoof. She has passed her easy doing and great disposition onto this really good yearling bull. The Dam’s birth weight was 63 lbs. and this is her 5th calf.

This is another progeny from Dillinger; this calf hit the ground at 72 lbs.; but look at the weaning weight! A good properly proportioned bull with a birth weight EPD in the top 25% and a top 30% weaning EPD. An average daily gain at weaning of 3.31 lbs. The Dam’s birth weight was 72 lbs. The Northline Crush daughters are beautiful long bodied heifers and are turning into great mothers.

MOON SIMMENTAL BULLS Over the years, many of our customers have talked about the great mothers Angus and Simmental produce. In the fall of 2011 Red Moon made a decision to expand into the Simmental business, we have purchased both solid red and solid black Simmental cattle, all are polled. HF COMEBACK 264U HERDSIRE AT BLAST ANGUS

Welcome to our second annual Northern Alliance Bull Sale.

We are very proud of our group of bulls. We have several heifer bulls as well as power cow bulls. With the North American cow shortage it has never been more important to buy good quality bulls. People are keeping more females and need to breed them to top bulls for replacement females.

Our 205 day weights were down this past fall because of lack of pasture. We refenced several areas last summer and battled the mud in July and August to get them done.

Our cow herd has increased to 150 mother cows which consist mainly the black angus purebreds and black baldie commercials.

The bulls have been fed TMR to obtain a 3 lb a day gain. The bulls have done extremely well on test. The bulls have all passed a semen test and are ready to go to work. Bulls were vaccinated in May and October with Ultra Choice 8 and Cattlemaster 5. They will receive a booster prior to our sale as well they will receive the Fusogard foot rot vaccine.

Bulls will be available for viewing at the Lazy B feedlot in Fort Fraser prior to sale. All the dams are available for viewing in Houston.

Adaptor 1429Y was purchased with his dam at the KFC dispersal last spring. In my opinion they were the strongest cow / bull calf combo in the sale. I also purchased his sire Royal Adaptor DRCC 8094U in that sale. He is very strong footed and agile, definitely can cover a lot of ground. Note his light birthweight. I should have more Adaptor calves by sale time to let you know what birth weights and calving ease will be.

Welcome to the 2012 Northern Alliance Bull Sale. I hope that calving is going well for all who are calving and I wish good calving to those who have yet to start.

I have 6 yearling bulls on offer this year. Every bull in this group is structurally correct and comes backed by strong, proven maternal genetics. Two of the bulls, 1Y and 4Y, have dams who are herd matrons that are still going strong. Both calved in early January this year and had heifer calves that are slated to be retained as replacements. Two of the bulls, 7Y and 12Y, have first calf heifers for dams. Both of these calves grew well and are testaments to the maternal and growth traits they will provide to their daughters and sons. 4Y and 16Y have dams that I purchased for their varied genetics, and they have not disappointed me. The bulls and their dams have been fully vaccinated with the Express Vaccine Program, guaranteeing them to be BVD PI free. 4Y is a larger framed bull with great depth and thickness. He has nicely balanced EPD`s with strong maternal numbers as well as good growth numbers. His sire is the great Final Answer known for his calving ease, excellent growth, and strongly maternal daughters. 54T is a cow from the Stewart Cattle Co. of Manitoba. She is very maternal with an excellent udder. I used her first bull calf in herd with very good results; he is the sire of 1Y and 12Y. 4Y has excellent numbers and should sire calves that weigh up well in the fall.

This is a really stout bull. He is a moderate framed bull with exceptional thickness, and depth. He has good muscle expression and is really smooth.

2107M is from the famed Crowfoot herd in southern Alberta. She is good footed with a strong production record. Wise Guy 10W is a home raised bull that has done a great job for me. His calves came easily and were very vigorous. 16Y would work well on cows.

Bids and Disputes Every animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will re-open between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the persons from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such a matter will be final.

Annoucements Any corrections or announcements made from the block on sale day will take precedence over the catalogue.

Purchasers Risk Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as it’s sold or as soon as the auctioneers gavel falls.

Certificate of Registry A certificate of Canadian registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer of each animal sold as a registered animal after settlement is made in a timely manner.

Breeders Guarantee All cattle are sold sound and right with a responsible breeder guarantee of satisfaction. In the event of an unlikely dispute the terms and conditions standard with the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association shall apply.
