Welcome to the 4th Annual Working Man’s Bull and Commercial Heifer Sale We would like to thank all of our return buyers as well as those of you who are choosing to attend our sale for the first time.

2013 was a pivotal year for Lazy E Bar Ranching. Ryan was born in July bringing the total of grandchildren up to 6! We were also fortunate last fall to have been given the opportunity to have purchased Mike Earley’s cow herd from Earley Bros of Ontario as well as a select load of top cows from Edmund & Shirley Kolesar Loma Lanes Angus herd. They are both herds with decades of quality breeding behind them and we feel quite thankful that we could acquire such great cows to complement our herd.

We feel we are bringing a great group of bulls to you again this year. We have been able to hold over such a strong group of bulls that we will be selling strictly 2 year olds this year. This has been a goal we have been working towards for the past few years. We are proud to bring you the culmination of our hard work in a structurally correct, good performing set of bulls.

They have been fed a nutritionally balanced silage and grain ration, ensuring good development and growth without sacrificing the longevity of the feet and legs. All bulls will pass a semen test prior to sale day.

We are once again happy to offer the mystery heifer lot. Your choice of our 2013 born heifer calves from our replacement pen, to be chosen by the buyer, any time before the 10th of May 2014.

NUTRITIONIST’S COMMENTS A whole load of fat bull It has always been said by the wise that “a fat bull is no good”, however this seems to go out the window on auction day where the fattest bull gets the highest price. Is this a problem? Not necessarily, it depends on how and when the bull got fat in the first place. A bull should be grown to full development, reach some level of maturity and then fatten nicely with a little trim.

Like me, they should reach a little age prior to finish. So the answer must be to feed some starch and proteins in a manner that aids in the digestion of fiber so the animal can use the entire diet. Protein source, lots to be said on that point. Natural sources of protein are generally better as lower starch diets won’t have the energy to convert urea to protein in the rumen. The amount is more important though. If a bull is grown with insufficient muscle mass (read protein here) he will “melt” during the breeding season. This is bound to happen anyway, right? A good looking fat bull comes home, and gets turned out to chase cows around a pasture, he is going to lose weight. The problem comes when the bull doesn’t have muscle to sustain him through this period. A fat bull with no underlying muscle melts away flooding the liver with fat to convert to sugar, damaging the liver in the worst case scenario, and causing ketosis induced aggression in the best. Now you have a skinny bull, that looks like crap, and unless you have separate feeding facilities for your young bulls he will never look good again! Bulls must be fed then as calves to allow “protein accretion”, good term there right! In other words we must feed the bulls relatively high protein feeds during early growth to make good two year old bulls that will stand the test of breeding time.

We have selected a package of heifers this year to sell and they should make a really good set of cows. They are age verified and were given 8 way vaccinations in the spring as well as an IBR, 8 Way and Ivomec after weaning in Dec. We made the choice to have our heifers fed at Lazy E Bar Ranching this winter again to have them on the same feed and nutrition program as last year.

D & B SIMMENTALS We would like to thank the Bleakleys for the invitation to consign heifers to their annual sale. These home raised heifers were born in March and April, weaned in October put onto swath grazing and supplemented with an alfalfa silage ration. These heifers are on a full herd health program having received Pyramid 5 and 8-Way in the spring and Ivomec in December. We have selected heifers that are sound, easy temperament and will be functional in any operation.

GENERAL INFORMATION TERMS OF SALE: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in case of disputes, the auctioneer's decision will be final. We reserve the right to withhold animals from export shipment for whom payments have not been received prior to departure times.

BREEDING GUARANTEE: All purebred cattle are sound and right and sell with a responsible breeder guarantee of satisfaction. In the event of any unlikely dispute, the regular terms and conditions, standard with the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association, shall apply. The consignors will not, however, provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. We therefore stress the importance of insurance on bulls. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of any animal.

CATTLE INSPECTION: All carry identity tags, corresponding to Sale Lot Numbers.

All shall be available for inspection prior to the sale.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected from the auction stand at sale time and will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.
