As usual at bull sale catalogue preparation we are dealing with four different calf crops at the same time. We have the “Specifically Held Over” two year olds, we have the yearling bulls and we have the newborns of 2013 coming hard and heavy at the same moment. Now wait a minute you say, that’s only three, what’s the fourth one? Sifting through piles and piles of bull sale catalogues from other breeders trying to decide on one or two of them, making lists of cows and heifers and what to A.I. them to and what pastures they are to go in with what clean-up bulls! So I’m dealing with next year’s calves as well because, just like our customers, our bull buying decisions are at least half the battle!! When you make an informed choice, it’s usually a good choice.

It’s kind of neat to sit here compiling all the data for our 42nd bull sale in Fort Macleod Auction and realize that these bulls selling today will go out there and influence other program’s bottom lines. We take that responsibility very seriously and are very proud to fill the needs of our customers both purebred and especially commercial cattlemen from a wide array of management, environment and financial operations.

I do believe we will have an awesome set of bulls at our bull sale for our customers in 2013. The line-up will include many different and extremely exciting new and old bloodlines for you to expand your genetic base line.

Things are changing at Brylor Ranch with the addition last year of the Get-A-Long cowherd. Our ET work will become a little less and not have quite as many of the ET bulls in the future but rest assured our quality and standards for selection will remain as high, if not higher, in the future years!

I have worked very hard with not putting up with bad feet in my cowherd for a long, long time. That is something I am very proud of and I do believe it shows in our bulls we offer. Also the udders on our cowherd are amazing in my opinion. Come see for yourself sometime ... we’re busy with kids, cows and 4-H projects, but I’m home a lot more nowadays and happy to be a rancher in southern Alberta makin’ a livin’ the only way I know how ... in the cattle business.

Quite possibly the greatest Red Angus bull of all time!!

To qualify you have put forth attributes including great EPD’s – he’s in the Top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, TM and Carcass Wt and Top 10% for Marb and Top 4% for his daughters’ CE. You have to have a show history – he was Canadian Show Bull of the Year twice, and won back to back titles at both Farmfair and Agribition. A bull has to have both great progeny and buyer acceptance all over the world. He is the only bull in Red Angus history to have a sale devoted to him and his progeny. “Mulberry Mayhem” qualifies him there. A son just won the triple crown in Australia for GK. A daughter just sold for $19,000 at the UTI sale. Also not many bulls in the world have ever had an ear notch to clone themselves sell for $37,000 like he had two years ago!

I have often wondered where my program at Brylor Ranch would be if I had not elected to use this bull!! About 1/3 of our cows are his daughters and I plan on using this 19 year old bull some more in the future. Two daughters just sold at the “Under The Influence” sale for $17,000 each last fall. Another sold for $13,500 at “Tradition With A Vision”. A daughter produced the $51,000 Iron Hide Bull of Blair’s. This “Elite” old treasure chest of genetics is in the Top 1% for milk, Total Maternal, Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy EPD’s. Also he is in the Top 6% for YW and 4% for Carcass Weights.

Now deceased but his legacy will live on through his very marketable and accepted sons and beautiful daughters. His females are rapidly becoming some of our most outstanding cows. We have one lone natural calf from him this year, #1A (by Lakme 204S) and she’s maybe as good a heifer we have had at this stage! Top 1% for WW and YW, REA and Carcass Weight, and Top 10% for Marbling as well.

Arson raised the $25,000 second high seller last year to Red Top. Nick Vangaalen has a son up at LaGlace, Arson 40X, that he’s very high on.

Arson’s last semen to sell in the US brought $225 per straw.

We made a very informed decision to use this bull a while back ... with a large dose of luck attached! He’s a maternal brother to Rough Rider who we wanted to use but his semen wasn’t available so we settled for Makin Hay! Pretty good compromise I’d say!

Holy smokes! Almost 130 points!!

Ref Sire G - Makn Waves (pictured as a yearling) This “Young Gun” or “Future Superstar” really and truly is living up to his name! He’s had a huge impact on every herd he has touched so far and the future looks extremely bright! Unfortunately he is going to be very limited in his use as we have only a small quantity of semen on him.

Since being our high seller in 2011 at $47,500 to JK / 5L / 3 Fires of Kansas he will not collect anymore. He breeds and settles cows naturally very well, though, at JK’s. The first summer in Kansas at 100 and some days of 100o+ F was a little hard on Wave’s nuts apparently as he did put up semen previously at Alta under Terry Whites guidance!

The Waves calves we do have are tremendous – we had 15 or so last winter and never touched one, so the cAlviNG eASe is definitely there and they have continued to grow well and will be great HeifeR BUll PRoSPectS today.

Another ET son out of Olivia but with the great Bieber Roughrider bull. Roughrider and Makin Hay are maternal brothers and both have played big parts at Brylor lately. Both Lots #1 and #2 are really dark colored bulls, too, for an added bonus.

Olivia 706P sold for 1/2 interest to Mark Chriss in Oregon for $24,000 in “Tradition With A Vision” 2011.

She’s had embryos sell for up to $2500 ... apiece ... in Red Round-up!! Now that’s buyer acceptance!

Makin Hay 9913 is now very rare as there is not much semen left. We sold three sons two years ago for a $25,000 average to JK, RACK and Brandls’ and all have been marvelous producers thus far.

Olivia 706P has been a stellar producer with purebred and commercial men alike chasing her sons.

My word, it takes an incredibly long time to incorporate some of these great black outcross genetics into a herd! We bought the black grandsire, 151R, back in 2007 from Stauffers.

You gotta see this bull’s dam, 90U, she’s absolutely a killer! 1/2 interest in her went to Griffin’s in Iowa for $11,000 in 2009 and do they ever have a set of calves from her.

We have 101Z, a natural full brother to this 206Z bull, in our May/June program for next year’s sale who is for real!

I have been stoked on these two Iceman calves since the day 1Z and 8Z were born, so here’s the deal ... ONLY 1 of these two are going anywhere other than breeding some of the Brylor cows. You do, however, get first choice and I’ll take the other one home. I would like to get a jump of semen on the one chosen, though, before going with the new buyer. I had the priviledge of showing our cows to Mr. Kyle Gilchrist of Iowa last summer and he really liked both these bulls as well.

The dam to 8Z is an ET New Trend 22D two year old cow that is a maternal sister to the $92,000 Master Plan 17M bull that was syndicated back in the ‘03 bull sale. Also last year the Fort Knox 100Y bull was from maternal grandam, 66K, too ($14,000 to JASS in Manitoba).

Now that the first Roughrider daughters have calved at our ranch, I like him all the more! They are everything and more I knew and expected them to be.

That’s not surprising to me at all though as I really thought his dam, the Adelle 8958 cow, was pretty special. She also raised the Makin Hay 9913 bull.

The sons of Roughrider have been remarkable too. Last year we had a great one sell to Jeff Fraser in Manitoba at $14,500 and one from ABC Cattle Company sold at Agribition 2012 to WRAZ for a large sum of money I understand.

Roughrider semen is now rare in Canada. We do have 20 straws selling today (A - 10 straws, B - 10 straws, and that’s all folks).

This bull has had my attention for some time now! Every herd tour I gave last summer we had to find tag #57Z for sure – calving ease, pedigree, performance, “the look”, the numbers and the exclusitivity!

There won’t be many of these Waves calves in the future in Canada as semen is very limited. We went back and flushed our very cherished cow, Olivia 706P, to our beloved old Dynastar 19S bull and came up with two heifers 236X and 237X. 237X sold 1/2 interest for $10,500 to Clay Enterprises.

• Selling 1/2 interest & full Possession This bull is very well named, not just because of our partner on his dam (Mark Chriss of the Mark Cattle Co. in Oregon) but because he is just what his name implies! He could have been called “Bang On” or “On Target” or “Spot On” but that wouldn’t have fit too well!

Point is, we’re glad to have Mark as our partner on Olivia 706P at $24,000 for 1/2 of her in “Tradition With A Vision” 2011. Mark is well on the way to paying for her through egg sales alone as some have sold up to $2,500 for frozen goodness supplied by her.

Olivia 706P has had sons sell up to $15,000 and a couple daughters now at $56,700, $13,500 and $10,500 as well as a son named Stringer at $12,000. She works well for us.

I thought last year it couldn’t possibly get any better than the Arson 55Y bull that Red Top bought for $25,000 (SSS & Arrowsmith also gave him a pretty good run)! Now, in 2013 along comes a calf in 84Z that will blow your mind. It is unbelievable how good he is ... and that is not a sales pitch, it’s the truth! What a hip this calf has, what a profile, what an incredible length of body and what a pedigree.

His Squall dam is a sleeper from the Riley’s dispersal. We also bought her dam, 81S, and her sister, 14P, that day as well! 22U has another Skor heifer calf in 2013 that’s beautiful too.

MEET THE JUDGE FOR 2013... Kurt Schwarz - LaCygne, KS Over the years we’ve had a lot of different cattlemen sort the pens of heifers in the Little Royal but maybe no one with as big a personality as my good friend and partner, Mr. Kurt Schwarz!

Each and every one of my previous judges know what a big deal it is to evaluate my commercial customers’ product. I know for a fact that Kurt is so lookng forward to doing this very important task because he has a vested interest in it! As I mentioned, not only is he one of my very best friends in this cow business, but he is a long term committed partner to our Brylor operation now as a bull supplier. Kurt and his wife, Paula, own and operate JK Cattle / 3 Fires with Kurt’s parents, Jack & Karen Lindstrom and “Uncle Jim” from Topeka, Kansas. They have about 175 Red Angus cows, some of which are Brylor partnership cattle.

Kurt attended “K-State” and was on the judging team there under Mr. Scott Schaake. Kurt grew up in the Shorthorn business and one of the big feathers in his cap is that he won the “All American Shorthorn Nationals Female” back to back years.

My name is Colby Jenkins and I was born and raised 20 miles southeast of Pincher Creek on the Lazy U Ranch, an 8000-acre cow/calf operation. Growing up on a ranch has not only taught me valuable life skills that I will never forget, but has helped to shape me into the person that I am today. I learned so many things from simply going through the day-to-day tasks of helping my dad with ranch work.If we did not do the chores, the horses would not eat, and having the responsibility of a living thing on your hands makes you very accountable for taking care of the duties you are responsible for. Animals and livestock never take a day off, and therefore the work that goes into running an 800 head cow/calf ranch is immense, and I got a taste of it growing up around it. I will forever appreciate the gratifying feeling I get when I know I have a job to do, and instead of neglecting it for something else, I put the work in and finish the task.

With the help from our ranch, my dad taught me how to be smart with my money and invest it instead of spending it on material objects that don’t generate me any money. The year that Ralph Klein gave every Alberta citizen 400 dollars. I remember the conversations at school between students about what they were going to spend their 400 dollars on – new video games, new clothes, a new bike, or a new iPod. I was dreaming up toys that I would buy of my own but my dad told me that my siblings and I would be pooling our money together and investing in some heifers. I didn’t fully understand the concept, but went along with it anyway.

Now I am 20 years old and I am proud to say that my brother, sister, and I have a herd of 32 heifers and steers, COlBY JeNKINS each year growing larger and generating more profit. When we sell our herd in the fall, I take the profit, keep half to use while I am in school, and invest the other half in more “Free grazers” (We call our herd the Free Grazers because they graze for free on my dad’s land, but we pay for all the vaccinations, etc.). The 400 dollars my friends got from the government that year is long gone, but with the help of my dad and the ranch life, I have seen my money grow into much more than a new video game or iPod. This is one of the most valuable lessons I have learned from life on the ranch and the benefits of livestock.

In conclusion, growing up on the Lazy U Ranch is an experience I would not trade for the world, and has taught me many things and even though I have moved away from home, I am still learning things from the ranch every single time I go there, and I do not expect that to end anytime soon.

Hi, my name is Kelsey Park. I am the daughter of Clayton and Kathy Park who own RACK Red Angus. I am also the granddaughter of Doug and Cheryl Lane who owned Meadow Creek Red Angus. I graduated with a High School Diploma in 2011, and I am currently furthering my education to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

It is a full-time two year program. The program requires us to have eight courses when the full-time requirements are only five courses. After I finish the nursing program my goal is to continue my education into Radiology.

I am very excited to finish my education and continue to grow a purebred Red Angus herd of my own. I love going to school and to have the ability to help people in need. Nursing is something that I am very passionate about, but I am also very passionate about ranching, and passing the love and knowledge on to future generations. My Grandpa Doug taught my dad many valuable things that my dad then taught me while I grew up on the ranch. I hope to pass that knowledge down to my kids one day. With living in the city I don’t get to help out as much on the ranch but every day spent in the city is to get me further in life so that I can have a ranch of my own.

I was a member in the Claresholm 4-H Club for nine years as well as a member of the Southern Alberta Judging Club for three years. I held every position in the 4-H club over the years and learnt many valuable skills that have assisted me in becoming a confident individual. From learning how to make a halter to public speaking KelSeY PaRK I have relied heavily on the skills. I can get up in a crowd when needed and talk without being nervous, as well as judge many things from cereal boxes to cattle. 4-H teaches many things that at the time seem unimportant but as life goes on you begin to use the skills more and more without realizing it.

Whether it’s been knowledge that I’ve gained from my family, 4-H, or school I cannot wait until I can give back to my community. Everything that has been taught to me over the years has made me who I am today. I will never stop learning but that’s what makes the cattle industry so exciting, there is always something new to learn.

Your scholarship would be greatly appreciated to help me obtain my goals in the future.

My name is Jamie Carey. I am the 22-year-old daughter of Brent and Peggy Carey of Stavely, AB. My whole life I have grown up on a farm west of Stavely. Stavely and the small towns surrounding it are all very involved in the agriculture industry. As walking by Dad’s side as a little girl, I did anything from checking cows, to feeding, to helping hold the tail of a cow calving, and sometimes if I was lucky I would even get to help drive the tractor. As I got to be more mature in age, eventually those jobs became full time to take on as my own along with my brothers. I have never lost my passion of working with animals and being able to spend more time with them.

After 21 years being around the Agriculture lifestyle and being part of 4-H and what it had to offer, I have now decided to go to Lethbridge College to take Agricultural Technology, with a major in Animal Science. I am very excited to learn more about the agriculture lifestyle, but even more exited for the future I will have after school. Two to four years on learning anything from crops, to irrigation, to accounting, nutrition, even sheep sheering, could hand me a life full of opportunities. Studying this topic could give me the option to many things such as, being a sells rep for local vet clinics, feed rep for Viterra, or for higher up brand names, such as Ivomec. I could also be in places such as dairy’s, different feedlots, pig and sheep farms, even Cargill selling f different feed additives that could change the daily living of animals. Studying ways to improve a healthy food balance for farm animals could make a life impact for any farmer or rancher, from having healthy looking cattle JaMIe CaReY that could raise up the market price, to having a world champion bull that could drastically improve the income for the owner in breeding and semen sales. Who knows? I could even be that “drug dealer”.

I plan to take advantage of these options and help make a difference in the ranching and farming lifestyle. I hope to travel to different places and meet different faces in this business than I already have. I have a great opportunity to learn how different cultures deal with certain sicknesses, diseases, and or diets, and maybe I could even help those cultures by supplying them with the knowledge that I know. But most of all I would love to support my hometown to help further educate, guide or even give some advice to the people that I grew up around and support the idea of more people getting into this exciting agricultural business, as well as to give back what they gave to me, which was giving me a great lifestyle that I have a passion for doing.

Curve is the newest Brylor Herd sire acquisition.

When I saw him go into the ring at Agribition last fall beside his beauty of a 2 year old mother I knew I had to go talk to Brett and Traci about buying a piece of him. He had as much scope and dimension as any calf in the barn and was way better thru his heart and front one third than all the other calves in the barn that day.

He also has got a set of nuts on him that were tremendous for a calf in November Lots of hair, good birth weight and was the highest WPDA of all the bull calves there as well!

We are looking forward to using this calf because I never have “trouble with the CURVE”. He will be at Alta for collection in late February and thru March so we can hopefully get him down for display at the sale.
