Welcome to Benlock Farms Tom and Shawnda’s 2016 Bull and Female Sale promises to be even bigger and better than 2015.

This exciting event will again be held in the loft of the great old hip roofed barn at Benlock. This 2016 edition features an outstanding group of Alaskan sons, also sons of the outcross sire, Scottie; outstanding sons of Panda and Raven Ray. Coming two-year-old Angus bulls developed right and ready for heavy service this spring and summer.

In the female department, a feature will be the fancy 2015 heifers; the first daughters of the exciting new sire Crescent Creek Entrepreneur 105A as well as Alaskan, Scottie and Panda, hand picked from off the top of the replacement heifers.

Also a great set of bred heifers will again be offered; these have been very well accepted in the previous sales.

These 45 breds have all been home raised, are from a cross section of the Benlock herd sires, many of these heifers are safe to the AI service.

Tom and Shawnda’s program is most impressive; these cattle work well for them and their customers.

Tom, a 5th generation Angus Breeder is supplying the cattle industry with genetics that work, proven by Tom and Shawnda’s beef retail business.

Tom and Shawnda have hand picked their best for this unique event. This has become a must attend sale with great food, hospitality and most importantly top Angus Breeding Stock.

Many Blessings…It’s amazing, all the people that play a part of our lives: family, friends, neighbours, day to day workers, loyal customers, sales staff, the only thing that exceeds these folk’s talents is their quality of character.

In 2015 one special moment for me, the surprise of Mike opening last year’s sale with dad’s gavel. A little conspiracy there as I suspect involvement from another blessing of mine. Heartfelt thanks to all from both Shawnda and I. Stand Tall for Agriculture…I really think it’s a case of misery loves company. The bureaucrats and paper pushers out there have done such a great job of their worlds, they want to drag us into their hole. What we need to do is explain to them that it’s industries like Agriculture that actually produce tangible commodities to sell and create wealth and prosperity. This helps to create the world we live in, in which they are enabled to enjoy many luxuries they feel self entitled to and take for granted; while agricultural people, on the other hand, by nature are more about passion, dedication, sacrifice, and hard work. It reminds me of the story Mom told about the old days and Grampa Sam. He’d stick new potential hired men in the chicken barn shovelling chicken manure. If they made the third day, they were worth keeping. Although bureaucrats are good at shovelling it, I think they may have been in for a bit of a rude awakening in Grampa Sam’s day.

Such is the real world we face in agriculture. It certainly produces a lot more than crops and livestock. It produces farm kids that are respected by all those that employ them. It produces character, nothing like mother nature, about the time we’re thinking we’re smart, teaching us humility. And certainly no time for committees or excuses when it’s time to get a weather related job done. And in our world, words like “integrity” aren’t just used when it serves our own purpose; they don’t even understand that defeats the meaning of the word. Anyway I’m carrying on. I guess my point isn’t that we need to get in anybody’s face or sleep with a loaded gun. (There are people that actually do that, and in a heartbeat I’d trust that guy over the paper pusher.) It’s just that we need to be prepared. To just stand up and say, “No, what we’ve got here is good and it needs to be protected.” We’re standing on a slippery slope.

Tongue Tacos…Whether it be tongue tacos or greater depth of quality and bloodlines in our offering, Shawnda and I are very customer driven; what makes us tick is your success and enjoyment. Thanks once again to our loyal customers; it’s your support that drives us forward. Good friends, Vlad and Laura will be helping us this year; their specialty, beef tongue tacos, as well as other Mexican delights. Laura had her own restaurant in Mexico City and can be found in the front part of the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market. These folks are the real deal. Shawnda will also have some of Benlock’s world famous hot dogs. So we can truly say you’ll be getting the whole cow, from one end to the other, nothing but the best. A huge thanks to the many, many good friends that come and help us with food and social, making this more about fun and fellowship, versus just another bull sale.

Greater Depth…Our initial feedback on this year’s offering has been very favourable. More depth of quality than ever, if you missed out last year on a bull purchase, don’t despair we’ve got good ones all through the sale offering. Whether it’s performance or heifer bulls, I feel confident we can fill anyone’s order from any pen on offer; as quality runs deep from top to bottom. Private Treaty Bulls…This program is designed to help customers fill their bull needs on budget at your convenience, without the pressure of an auction sale. Come early for best selection. The sweet part is, if you see a better deal at the sale, we’ll refund your deposit and let you flip to an auction bull. Foundation Style Females…For this year’s offering, we’ve doubled our bred heifers: 1/2 bred Speckle Park and 1/2 bred Angus, a few bred Wagyu. And once again a very solid group, as bottom end heifers work well in our beef retail; you only see the ones we feel will go out and work for our customers. Many of our heifers sell safe to their AI breeding which puts them calving at the end of April. Our 15 purebred heifer calves are indeed fancy. These girls are a true reflection of our program; they were brought in on December 11 with their moms; no grain, clipped and pictured within a week, and still looked good. The kind of cattle we inspire to raise, the kind that survive and thrive in a cowman’s environment. Take advantage of our heifer calf payment plan, as it puts you a step ahead buying these young females today and watching as their value grows by fall.
