Asthe days become longer and the weather improves, the ANGUSalive team has a fantastic selection of activities and events for all ages and interests this Spring and Summer. Here are just a few of our highlights across culture, sport and leisure from the season’s action packed What’s On. We also invite you to visit our new website to check out our activities and services which are available for you to enjoy throughout the year.

Everyone is invited to Race into a Book with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Angus Libraries. As well as the satisfaction of reading six books throughout the summer holidays, successful readers will also be rewarded with a medal for crossing the finishing line!

Families can Time Trek through Museums in Angus with a brand-new backpack that’s packed full of activities to capture kids imaginations while they learn more about our local heritage and culture.

Quiet family swim sessions have become a permanent fixture as part of the Biba (Be Inspired Be Active) programme at Forfar Community Campus. This is one of many Disability & Inclusion activities on offer, along with football, cycling, wheelchair sport sessions and much more; there’s plenty of opportunity to learn new skills, try new sports and meet new friends.

Open Water Swimming at Monikie Country Park gives swimmers the chance to take the plunge in the freedom of the great outdoors, with the safety of our qualified team nearby. This is the perfect chance to try an open water dook if it’s something you’ve thought about but haven’t been brave enough to try or if you’re a regular – welcome back.

For those who enjoyed Neighbours back in the day, Dr Karl Kennedy invites you to look back at Ramsay Street’s best moments in The Doctor Will See You Now at The Webster Memorial Theatre. If you fancy a night of foot stomping, dancing and singing, Old Time Sailors could be the show for you! There’s loads of laughter and music a’plenty in our upcoming programme.

Arbroath Signal Tower Museum

Built in 1813, Signal Tower Museum is located near Arbroath’s picturesque and busy harbour and enables residents and visitors to hear the story of the magnificent Bell Rock Lighthouse and its influence on the town’s social and industrial history. The galleries will allow you to explore the Spotlight on Arbroath’s Fishing Heritage’ exhibition as well as the changing displays in our cottage gallery. Visits are also available to the Tower room (booking required). The ground floor is accessible with virtual access to the first floor galleries and tower.

Brechin Town House Museum

Immerse yourself in Brechin’s history and people with a fantastic selection of objects, photographs, and archival material. Displays focus on its ancient beginnings as an ecclesiastical city of great note. Diorama displays include a cleric in the Cathedral Scriptorium and the cattle rustler John Gall, in the ‘Black Hole’ of Brechin.

You can also find out about the Picts, the Jacobites and 20th century history. There’s also a miniature model of the town, a gallery dedicated to the artist David Waterson and a fascinating collection of Pictish Stones. The ground floor is accessible with a lift providing access to the first-floor galleries. Accessible toilets. Free parking available nearby.

Meffan Museum and Art Gallery

Built in 1898, visitors to the Meffan today can walk between an incredible collection of early carved stones found at ancient sites across Angus.

Immerse yourself in the story of Forfar by wandering through a recreation of Forfar’s old narrow cobbled street, peer inside Peter Reid’s sweet shop, a clockmaker’s workshop, and see the baker who was famous for Forfar Bridies. Finally step into the crowd staring at the horrific 17th century trial of a witch. Two large galleries are devoted to art exhibitions. The ground floor is accessible with a lift providing access to the first-floor galleries

Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum

The Town House | 32 High Street | Kirriemuir | DD8 4BB

This award-winning museum celebrates the history, culture and natural environment of the ‘Little Red Town’ and the western Angus glens.

On the ground floor we look at the town’s history, including the origins of Kirriemuir’s name, its history as a weaving town and famous Kirriemarians such as the creator of Peter Pan; J. M. Barrie and rock star Bon Scott. Upstairs the people, natural history, geology, legends and archaeology of rural Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Clova and Glen Doll are explored. A wildlife diorama brings the visitor face to face with some of the wilder inhabitants. The ground floor is accessible with virtual access to first floor.

Montrose Museum and Art Gallery

Montrose Museum opened in 1842, making it one of the first purpose-built museums in Scotland. The museum tells the story of Montrose and its people. From the earliest archaeological finds, the Marquis of Montrose to the Jacobite uprisings and the harbour and maritime trade. It houses a series of displays in the neo-classical building’s spacious atrium, mezzanine and galleries. It was originally designed to resemble a true temple of learning!

The art gallery hosts changing exhibitions as well as a series of afternoon talks, children’s activities and occasional evening events on-site.

Angus Archives is a treasure trove of fascinating written and photographic records covering 800 years of history of Angus and its communities. With extensive archives and photographic collections there is plenty of Angus history to explore.

Conquer the Tower!

Climb the dramatic spiral staircase and visit the tower room during our guided Tower tours, find out how Light Keepers at the Signal Tower shore station communicated with the Bell Rock Lighthouse 11 miles out to sea before radio. Try our virtual tours in Gaelic, Polish, Romanian and English - Brilliant for those who don’t want to climb the 70 steps to the top of the tower! Booking is required due to the limited number of spaces available on each tour.

An exhibition of large scale works by artist Niall Campbell that explore “the unconscious mind”. Process led creation where a colour randomly placed on the surface invites a response and a journey begins. The works are intuitive, and serendipity plays a role, as for part of the process the work is put away and revisited after a period of time, invariably this means that a different viewpoint might emerge.

A link between humanity, the landscape and the dreaming, which is created via dance and costume, painting and singing. Corroboree is a form of ritual carried out by indigenous peoples across Australia, inspiring this incredible exhibition by artist Kym Needle which highlights the link between culture and landscape at a time where so many of humanity’s connections to the earth are being threatened.

An art exhibition showing the works of Kinga Elliott, created as a response to the items in the collection of the Glenesk Folk Museum, where she is currently the artist in residence.

Focusing on manifestations of light, colour, dynamism, balance and interconnectedness, her inspirations are based on everyday objects, natural forms, geometry and mathematical theorems.

Kinga’s works can be found in various collections and have been recently exhibited at the British Art Fair in the Saatchi Gallery.

SWEET SPOT is a large scale photography project taking place across vacant shop units in Arbroath during August – October and includes this specially designed installation which features work produced during workshops with schools and community groups. ANGUSalive Countryside Adventure

Crombie Country Park: Monikie, Angus, DD5 3QL

There is plenty to do at Crombie Country Park. The park has a wide range of walks and trails suitable for both walkers and cyclists. Wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers can check out the accessible ponds and the bird hides and squirrel feeding area. Picnic and BBQ facilities are available. Dogs, under control, are welcomed all year round except in the children’s play park. Please observe signs for restrictions.

Forfar Loch: Craig o’ Loch Road, Forfar, DD8 1BT

Walk, run, cycle, horseback, there are many ways to enjoy Forfar Loch Country Park. The circular route around the Loch is 4 kms (2.5 miles) long. Rangers run a nature club for children every second month. Let the children explore the local wildlife and a variety of habitats in the Wildlife Garden. They can also play in the children’s playpark. There are plenty of picnic tables and seating to enjoy the park and stop for refreshments. Dogs, under control, are welcomed all year round except in the children’s play park. Please observe signs for restrictions.

Glen Doll Visitor Centre: Glen Clova, Kirriemuir, Angus, DD8 4RD

A Visitor Information Centre with wildlife, botanical and landscape interpretation lying in a Special Area of Conservation in the southern Cairngorms National Park. This is a fantastic starting point for further exploration of the outstanding scenery of the Angus Glens home to iconic Scottish wildlife such as Red Deer, Golden Eagles and Red Squirrels. Short way marked walks and routes leading to Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve, Munros, Braemar, Lochnagar and Ballater all start here. Dogs, under control, are welcomed all year round. Please observe signs for restrictions especially during nesting season.

Monikie Country Park: Panmure Rd, Monikie, Angus, DD5 3QA

Monikie Country Park boasts beautiful woodland and parkland with a variety of things for the family to see and do. Monikie Country Park’s many attractions include adventurous land and water activities, selfled trails, marquee and BBQ hire and an adventure play park for the kids. Adventurous activities available within the park include: team building, rafting, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and mountain biking. Qualified staff are available for sessions and RYA courses, watersports equipment can also be hired throughout the summer in the park. Denfind Bird Sanctuary, with its bird hides, is an ideal place to view a wide variety of wetland birds throughout the year. Dogs, under control, are welcomed all year round except in the children’s play park. Please observe signs for restrictions.

Montrose Basin: Rossie Braes, Montrose, Angus, DD10 9TJ

Just minutes from the centre of Montrose, this unique wildlife attraction combines the sights and sounds of birds such as kingfishers, ducks, geese, and mammals including seals and otters, with a host of childfriendly activities within the Visitor Centre. The Basin, the estuary of the South Esk, covers 750 hectares, is a site of international importance for visiting and resident birds. As well as being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the reserve is a designated Local Nature Reserve (LNR) giving greater recognition and protection to its wildlife.

Monikie Maniacs is part of a nationwide network of windsurfing clubs where young people aged 10 years to 16 years, get together to learn new windsurfing skills and have a laugh with their mates on the water. Since the same faces come back regularly, you’ll make new friends as well.

Whatever your skill level, regular windsurfing sessions will improve your windsurfing ability very quickly. If you’ve never tried it before, you’ll have the basics mastered in no time. From first time windsurfer to a relative expert, Monikie Maniacs clubs welcome all levels.

Health Walks are regular, short, free, low level walks led by trained staff and/or volunteers. Suitable for those who are currently inactive, living with long term conditions or in recovery from illness or injury, and/or at risk of isolation or just want to come and participate in fun physical activity, connect with nature and make new friends. Through this programme we aim, in collaboration with partners, to promote existing Health Walks and increase the offerings across Angus.
