ETA Adopt-a-Highway Trash Pick-Up

On Monday, October 19, 2015, several Eden teachers participated in the Eden Teachers’ Association Adopt-aHighway trash pick-up. Twice a year the Eden Teachers’ Association cleans up a section of Route 62 between Eden and North Collins. Eden Girls Volleyball Team Wins State Championship

The 2015 Eden Varsity Girls Volleyball Team won Class C Super Regionals, Saturday, November 14 at Chittenango High School, making this the 17th straight year the Raiders qualified for the state tournament. Eden then headed to Class C NYSPHSAA Championships, Saturday, November 21, at Glen Falls Civic Center where they captured their seventh straight State Championship, and thirteenth overall State Chamionship

Legislator Mills secures $15,000 for Eden-North Collins Food Pantry building fund

Erie County Legislature Chairman John Mills announces that the Legislature has approved $15,000 for the new Eden-North Collins Food Pantry in the 2016 Erie County budget. The funding was approved at today’s annual Budget Meeting to support the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry’s efforts to build a permanent center.

“The towns of Eden and North Collins have been working extremely hard to build the new Eden-North Collins Food Pantry and I am thrilled that Erie County has stepped up to help this effort. Rural poverty is a serious problem facing our community and the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry works tirelessly to meet those needs. A new building is a critical part of the equation and will be a huge help,” said Legislator Mills.

“We are extremely appreciative of Legislator Mills’ efforts to secure this funding for the new Eden-North Collins Food Pantry. This is such an outstanding investment from Erie County and will go a long way in helping us reach our goal to better serve the community,” said Executive Director Don Schasel.

Legislator Mills urges the County Executive to stay his veto power and support this additional funding priority in next year’s budget. It is important to note that the additional funding was added into the 2016 budget without increasing overall spending in the next fiscal year. In fact, the Legislature lowered the property tax rate for the second consecutive year.

Boys & Girls Club News

The Boys and Girls Club of Eden's cooking club put on their first annual family Thanksgiving Dinner Tuesday evening. There were 15 club members that helped staff member Alex Bianchi prepare the dinner. The members prepared mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing, squash, turkey and pies for 35 family members. When the cooking club meets every Thursday, Alex teaches them how to prepare meals, snacks, and drinks. The cooking club members look forward to what they are making every week in addition to the next event they get to prepare. We would like to thank our members, their families, and everyone who has supported and participated in this event.

James M. Hatfield, Sr.

James M. Hatfield, Sr., age 85, of Eden, New York died in his home on Wednesday, November 25, 2015. James was born January 2, 1930 in Gowanda, New York; the son of Clayton and Anna (Mackmer) Hatfield. James attended a one room School House in Collins Center, NY where James said he received the finest education without any computers or electronic devices. He later graduated high school in Gowanda in 1948. James was one of the first graduates of Erie County Technical Institute, which is now known as Erie Community College. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 during the Korean War and served in Germany as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

He was happily married for 65 years to his college sweetheart Wanda H. Steeves. They were married on November 29, 1950 at West Avenue Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York.

James is preceded in death by his parents, a brother George, a brother Clarence and a granddaughter Rachael Poole. He is survived by his wife, Wanda H. (Steeves) Hatfield; a son, Dr. James (Dr. Patricia) Hatfield, Jr. and two daughters; Deborah A. Yancey and Cynthia Koener. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 4, 2015 in the Eden United Methodist Church, 2820 E. Church St., Eden, NY. Flowers gratefully declined. Kurtzworth Jr. November 24, 2015, of Springville, NY, age 67, beloved husband of Robbin (Lowman) Kurtzworth; loving father of Shannon Kurtzworth, Kimberly (Joshua) Hackett, Heather (Jason) Hohman, Breanne (Richard) Eckelberry, Charlene Zylinski, Mary (Maurice) Aiello, Brandon Zylinski and Darrell Zylinski; grandfather of Koa, Justin, Declan, Timothy, Nora, Madelyn, Olivia, Logan and Kendall; brother of Frederick Bodekor, Martha (Clifford) Stone, Michael (MerryAnn) Kurtzworth, Joseph Kurtzworth and the late Robin Kurtzworth, Marilyn Bauerlein and Frank Bodekor; son of the late Leo Sr. and Bernice (Demske) Kurtzworth. James was recently honored for 60 active years in the Masonic Lodge. He was given the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, which was awarded in the Fortune Masonic Lodge #788 F &AM in North Collins, New York, this award will be sealed and given to the Grand Lodge in New York City. He was known for playing the role of Santa Claus for many years for the North Collins Elementary School children. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending over 50 years managing a forest on his property. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood, riding his six wheeler with his great grandson Ollie and his trips to the casino

The Eden Chamber of Commerce Honors 2015 Citizen of the Year and 2015 Business of the Year

The Eden Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday, November 19th, at the Four Corners Café. The event was attended by 70 Chamber members and friends of the Chamber who heard from Erie County Legislator John Mills as the guest speaker. Legislator Mills spoke of his connection to Eden and the progresses Eden has made in Erie County. Mr. Mills presented Proclamations to both honored recipients of the evening.

Absolut Care Eden was chosen by the Chamber Board as 2015 Business of the Year based on the recommendation of the nomination submitted to the Chamber on their behalf. Absolut Care has been a continual resource to our community with their 40- bed home-like facility. They provide a stable work place for a very efficient staff of which 13 were present at the ceremony. Administrator, Matt Hriczko, received the award presented to him by Gabriel Johnson, of Laing Funeral Home, who had nominated Absolut for the award. The Eden Chamber Board is very proud to call Absolut Care Eden their neighbor and fellow Chamber member.

Eden Town Supervisor Glenn Nellis was unanimously chosen as 2015 Citizen of the Year. Members of our community and of organizations that Supervisor Nellis either founded or serves on their board in Eden and throughout the County were present as well. Mr. Nellis’ accomplishments have been remarkable over the past 18 years. To present the award and remind the audience of those accomplishments were his Assistant, Lisa Greiner, Eden Town Councilwoman Mary Lou Pew, and his retired Assistant, Anne Knack.

A special honor was presented to Eden Town Councilman, Ed Krycia by President Paul Zittel for Ed’s 20 plus years of serving on the Eden Chamber Board as the Eden Town Board’s liaison. He has been instrumental in keeping the Chamber connected to the goings on in our Town Hall. The Eden Chamber of Commerce wishes all its recipients health, prosperity, and peace as they enter the New Year. We look forward to continuing to work with our community, our school, and our businesses; and look forward to choosing next year’s recipients of these prestigious awards.
