Southtowns Catholic School held a Mother & Son Dinner & Game Night on Saturday, November 14th. Boys from Preschool to Grade 8 invited their moms & grandmothers to a spaghetti dinner that was held at the school. Before and after dinner the boys and their dates played classic board games, did puzzles, stacked cups, did the limbo and participated in a giant twister game. Pictured: Joyce & Gregory Jones

Tea in the Country

Ladies from Gowanda and the surrounding area attended a calming afternoon delight with “Tea In The Country,” Sunday, November 8, sponsored by the Pathways to Wellness Center. The ladies were adorned with long lovely dresses, fancy hats and lace gloves to up hold the high tea tradition. They indulged in traditional scones, delectable tea sandwiches, fancy desserts and sipped a variety of teas. In this calming rustic atmosphere the ladies engaged in conversation with friends while soothing and relaxing music played in the background promoting a sense of well being and renewed spirit. Tea places tend to invite leisure. The country tea parlor was adorned with tables covered with linen covered table cloths and the finest china to make this occasion special. Howard and Carol Allen, owners of the Pathways to Wellness Center located at 11417 Eden Rd., N. Collins, strive to promote a variety of opportunities to promote wellness.

We can be proud of Councilman Mark DeCarlo for being the first to acknowledge that the people should have a vote on the nature woods, and he was the one who called for a show of hands at the last Board Meeting. Rose (nee Barone) Markello

Rose (nee Barone) Markello of West Seneca, NY, formerly of North Collins, passed November 12, 2015, at the age of 93. She was born May 18, 1922. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Carl Markello; loving sister of the late Clara Castiglia; sister-in-law of James (Rhea), Ross (Grace), Anthony (Nancy), Samuel (June) Markello and the late Connie (Lewellyn) Howels and Joseph (Nina) Prescher; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St., North Collins, and a Mass of Christian Burial was offered from Holy Spirit Church, North Collins.

NYSEG and RG&E Pick Up 50,000th Refrigerator for Recycling Since 2011

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, will mark a milestone somewhere in upstate New York this month as the 50,000th refrigerator or freezer is picked up for environmentally-responsible recycling through the companies’ recycling program that began in May 2011. “Energy is a valuable commodity and using it wisely has become a way of life for our customers,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “Older refrigerators and freezers use up to three times the energy of newer models. We commend our customers who have participated in the recycling program that takes these energy-wasting units off the grid.” The recycling program pays customers $50 for an energy-wasting refrigerator or freezer still in working condition. Customers can also save up to $150 a year in electricity costs by removing energywasting units from their homes. Stacked on top of one another, 50,000 refrigerators or freezers would reach 52 miles high, just 10 miles shy of outer space, and weigh approximately 5,000 tons. But for RG&E and NYSEG customers, those 50,000 refrigerators and freezers represent annual electricity savings of tens of millions of kilowatthours. Customers with NYSEG or RG&E electricity service can call 1.877.691.0021 toll-free to schedule a free pick-up of an old, working, energy-inefficient refrigerator or freezer picked at their home. They can also schedule a pick-up online at www.nyseg.com/energyefficiencyprograms/recycle/ (for NYSEG customers) and www.rge.com/energyefficiencyprograms/recycle/ (for RG&E customers). Units bound for recycling are transported to an appliance recycling facility operated by JACO Environmental. JACO safely removes harmful materials from the old, inefficient units, reclaiming 95 percent of the materials for reuse in manufacturing new products. Even the foam insulation is safely incinerated to generate electricity.

Houghton senior women's soccer player Darlene Eckhardt (Eden, NY,) has been named the NCCAA Division I Women's Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 14.

Eckhardt helped lead the Highlanders' attack in Houghton's 3-0 win over Lancaster Bible College in the NCCAA Midwest Region Semifinal on Saturday.

After assisting on the team's first two goals, she continued to make runs down the right flank and sent numerous dangerous crosses into the opposing box. Her teammates just missed converting on several of her passes as the Highlanders outshot the Chargers, 39-1, on the afternoon. Eckhardt also finished with two shots on goal.
