Local Couple Celebrates 50 Years

Michael and Shirley (Annaccone) Smith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 20, 2015. They were married before friends and family in St. Ambrose in South Buffalo on November 20,1965. They moved to Angola with their three daughters, Lisa, Paula (Todd Eastman), Kelly in November of 1977. Following Mike's retirement from the Ford Stamping Plant, he and Shirley spend winters at their condo in Bradenton, Florida and summers back in Evans spending time with their family. They are active grandparents involved in the activities of their six grandchildren: Logan, Kyle, Austin, Cameron, Collin, and Allison.

Reason: Lake Shore Central School Board Denies Veterans School Tax Exemption

In December 2013 Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law (sect. 458 of the real property tax law) to give military Veterans a school tax exemption.

The law left it up to local school boards to also APPROVE the measure. At the October 22, 2015 Lake Shore School Board Meeting, a group of VETERANS from Evans VFW POST 5798 attended and URGED PASSAGE of the LAW. The president of the School Board read a letter stating that the BOARD HAD ALREADY DENIED ITS APPROVAL!!!

The following area school boards have APPROVED the Veterans exemption: Hamburg, Alden, Tonawanda City, Maryvale, Iroquois, Eden, North Collins, Niagara Wheatfield, Cheektowaga, Forestville, and Orchard Park.

Boys from Preschool to Grade 8 invited their moms & grandmothers to a spaghetti dinner that was held at the school. Lake Shore High School Students Representing Music Program at All State Music Festival

On November 20th and 21st, the Music Department had several students represent our music program at the New York State Zone 1 Area All-State Music Festival at S.U.N.Y. Fredonia. Students selected for this festival are the top student musicians in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus Counties.

To be eligible for consideration, students have to prepare a classical solo and audition at a state-sponsored solo festival in the spring of the previous school year. Scores are compared, and the top scoring students are selected. Kennedy Cymerman (clarinet), Benjamin Hellert (percussion), Melissa Hepple (voice), Jared Himes (trumpet), and Madeline Vail (French horn) were selected as some of the top student musicians in four counties. Erin Atwood (French horn) was selected as an alternate.

Conductors of the Area All-State Band, Orchestra, and Chorus are some of the top conductors in the country and hail from top College and University Music Programs. The concert is open to the public and is one of the top student music events of the year.

JT Waugh Elementary Students Meet Monthly Reading Goals

Students in Mrs. Dinkuhn’s, Mrs. Mion’s, and Mr. Renzo’s second-grade classes at John T. Waugh Elementary School recently participated in our monthly reading incentive. The students were asked to read outside of the classroom, at home with a sibling, a parent, or by themselves. The students then kept a log of the minutes they read during the month of October.
