Immaculata's Elements of Broadcasting class toured the studios of WIVB Channel 4 on October 23rd. Students visited and learned about all of the departments that work together to produce a news broadcast, had an opportunity to take their turn in front of the green screen to give a mock weather forecast, and stand behind the news desk. Angola LSC Alumni Celebrates Homecoming
The Angola Lake Shore Alumni Association Board Members celebrated Homecoming Weekend with the Senior High School students. Past president and current board member Shirley Pfalzgraf and Honorary Member Roslyn Chiappone and Ron Pfalzgraf attended the high school pep rally where they presented the Senior Homecoming King and Queen with trophies. The Alumni Association donates the trophies annually. This year Justin Gajdosz and Emma Franco were awarded with the titles of Homecoming King and Queen. All involved were filled with Lake Shore school spirit! Later that evening the Alumni board members judged the Homecoming parade floats. The homecoming theme was Fairy Tales. A great deal of hard work and creativity was put into the floats and the students were excited to be there. The winning floats were 1st place Seniors with Hansel and Gretel , 2nd place Girls Varsity Volleyball with Peter Pan, 3rd place Transportation Department with Goldilocks and the Three Bears, fourth place Freshmen with Jack and the Beanstalk and fifth place Girls Varsity Swimming with the Sea Maiden . After judging, the Alumni Association joined the parade and handed out candy to the viewers. Everyone proceeded to the High School to enjoy the Homecoming game, which we won! Board members who attended were: Shirley Pfalzgraf, Richard Jasinski, and Joe Chiappone, and, with Honorary members: Ron Pfalzgraf, and Roz Chiappone. Lions Host District Governor
The Evans Township Lions Club hosted the Governor of District 20N, at a dinner meeting in The Most Precious Blood Church Hall on Monday, October 26, 2015. The Evans Club is one of 47 Lions Clubs in District 20N, which encompasses the 5 counties of Western New York. Each annually elected District Governor is required to visit each club within their District during their year of service as District Governor. This insures continuity of purpose and communication between the local Lions Club and the larger state and international organization that make up Lions Clubs International, (www.lci.com), the largest service organization in the world.

The Lake Shore High School Freshman Academy Welcomes the Class of 2019
The Lake Shore Freshman Academy has spent the first weeks of school participating in team building activities to help them acclimate to high school life. By working together, the incoming class has come to understand that they are part of one team - the class of 2019. On this team, everyone matters, no one falls through the cracks, and every student is expected to graduate with their classmates in 2019.
A large part of the Academy's acclimation process is team building and cooperative learning. At the close of September, the entire class participated in the Annual Freshman Team Building Boot Camp where they had to work together and with their teachers in various fun, physical, and mental challenges. Following Boot Camp, they celebrated their first official Homecoming Week participating in many fun school traditions all week long. Over 150 freshmen participated in our hallway decorating challenge earning them first place overall.
The Freshman Academy believes involvement is key to student success in high school, so students are quickly immersed in fun, positive programs that encourage student participation. Statistics show that students who are involved in more than just academics enjoy the high school experience than those who do not. They also more likely to have a strong attendance record; when students have good attendance, they have better grades. The Academy would like to thank the parents of our students as well as the Lake Shore Central School District administrators, faculty and staff for allowing us to provide such great opportunities for our freshmen class.

Lake Shore High School Junior Cary Ignaczak overcame a windy and wet day at Sheridan Park Golf Club to secure a spot in the Section 6 State Qualifier set for May 2016. His round of 82 was good enough for 14th place in the 27 player field and a berth in the tournament. Ignaczak posted a Lake Shore High School record average of 37.80 for the season, proving he belongs within the elite high school golfers of Erie County.

Southtowns Catholic School Visits Hidden Valley
Students in Mrs. Grudzinski's kindergarten class, Mrs. Johnson's Grade 1 class and Mrs. Hill's grade 2 class went on a field trip to Hidden Valley Animal Adventure. It is a family-run and operated animal park with over 300 animals and 40 different exotic species and the kids were able to interact with them and get up close. The kids rode the tram and fed zebras, ostrich, bison, elk, water buffalo and many other kinds of animals. Pictured: kindergarten, grade 1 & grade 2 on the bridge.

On October 17th and 18th, five students from the High School Symphonic Band were selected to perform in the Buffalo State Honors Band under the direction of Dr. Catherine Ann Rand from the University of Southern Mississippi. Victoria Andrews (trumpet), Kennedy Cymerman (clarinet), Mackenzie Fox (clarinet), Ben Hellert (percussion), and Sennie Lay (flute) were among over 100 students from schools from all over Western NY who participated in the event.
Performers attended rehearsals, workshops, and classes throughout the weekend before putting on a concert on Sunday at Buffalo State's Rockwell Hall Center For The Arts. Upon taking office in 2012, we realized how badly the Town of Evans had been mismanaged. It was a difficult challenge to correct the many things that had been neglected or not done at all. Many of them are still being corrected today!

Joe Giambrone, a 31-year veteran highway superintendent, is asking for your vote to allow him another four years to continue to give back to his birthplace and lifelong residence, with his characteristic selfless dedication.
This year, Joe has an opponent running on the conservative line, Mr. Friend, whom has built his platform on change and choice. Since early July, Mr. Friend has had the opportunity to reasonably explain how he is going to be a better highway superintendent. So far, he has failed to produce any facts relative to his platform.
Mr. Friend has placed several ads in a local publication. In one of them, he pointlessly staggers down memory lane, lamenting about what happened 30 years ago. The next ad he makes a statement referring to snow removal as child’s play. Joe, with his immense experience, will tell anyone that just one of his area’s usual snow storms can take days of intense round the clock work to clear up, making snow removal on this town’s size and scale, serious business!
Well maintained roads are not, as Mr. Friend states, child’s play. We all rely on our roads to go to work, get our kids to school, make doctors’ appointments, etc., as well as allowing free access for emergency vehicles to keep us safe. That ad alone, shows Joe is the only adult in the room, and Joe has a 31-year history of getting the job done.
The truth about this election is that neither candidate has given the residents a good reason to change superintendents. Mr. Friend has yet to give at least one reason to vote for him and nor has Joe given anyone a reason not to vote for him!
Mr. Friend is touting change and choice in this race. His entry into this election has indeed given the voters a choice. Through his use of dirty tactics, ridiculous statements and childish viewpoints of the job, he has proven that Joe Giambrone is the sensible choice for highway superintendent.

Evans Garden Club: The Green Path
Days to close down our gardens for the winter ahead will soon be shorter and fewer. There is still time though so here are some good late fall gardening tips from our good friend Lynn Chimera of East Aurora. Lynn is owner and founder of "Lessons from Nature" and has written a book entitled Five Keys to Better Gardening.
There is still a short time to bring in annuals for the winter or take cuttings. This should be done before it gets much colder. Good garden clean-up is essential to help prevent disease next season. Carefully remove and discard leaves and stems of infected plants and remove. Do not compost any diseased plant material and be sure to disinfect your pruner with a spray of Lysol. Weeding is very important in the fall as many weeds are setting seeds and if you get them out now you will have far fewer to deal with next year.
Contrary to popular belief, fall is not the best time for pruning trees, shrubs and roses. Late winter and early spring are best, the exception being spring blooming shrubs like lilac and forsythia. Those should be pruned after they bloom next spring. Dead branches can be removed anytime. Other perennials like day lilies and huchera can be left to cut back in spring. The plant crowns offer winter protection.
Since we're not sure what type of winter we will be having, give extra protection in the form of leaf mulch (chopped up leaves) to newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials. Spreading a 3" layer of mulched leaves in a circle around each plant, being careful not to touch the stem(s) is very helpful. This should be done after we have a few hard frosts. If you haven't brought in houseplants, tender perennials or annuals to overwinter, you'd better do it soon. The nights are getting cold and the longer you leave them outside the more difficult their transition will be. For plants you have already brought in, it's a good idea to check them for any insects you might have missed. A certain amount of leaf drop is expected so don't be concerned about that.
As your annuals fade, pull them out, roots and all. It is easier to remove them before the frost makes them mushy. Hosta, for example, are much easier to cut back before a frost. If you leave a few blossom stems showing (6 or 8") it's easy to tell where the hosta are next spring.
Most perennials with seed heads like daisy, rudbeckia, Echinacea and astilbe can be left up. The seed heads provide food for winter birds and look great poking through the snow. The exception would be any plants that you want to prevent setting seed all over your garden.
It's late in the season to be transplanting and dividing. Most plants need 4 to 5 weeks for their roots to settle in. At this time in the fall, it would be best to leave them in and divide and move them in the spring. That being said, hardy plants like day lilies and hosta can probably be moved but it should be done soon.
If you have problems getting your hydrangeas to bloom, cover them completely with leaves after the ground freezes. If the shrub is large, you can make a cage around it with chicken wire and fill that.
Even though we've had some rain, don't put your hoses away just get. If it gets dry again, you will need to hydrate anything planted this season, including trees and shrubs. When digging yesterday under some trees, the ground was actually powdery dry - so keep those hoses handy.

By this time, most of you know that I am running for Highway Superintendent.
I have not placed any negative ads against the current superintendent, nor will I respond to negative ads he has placed against me.
The race for Highway Superintendent is not about party loyalty or egos. It is about maintaining Town roads, ditches and related concerns.
All the roads that were plowed in the town will continue to be plowed, the ditches will be cleaned and culverts will be replaced as needed. Tree limbs that hang over the road will be trimmed to remove the hazard and more. These are concerns that have been brought to my attention along with several others during my campaign visits, and I will address them.
