Troop 30166 Surprises Local Family
It was a group effort to try to surprise a local family who has been fighting cancer together since Baby Jonah was diagnosed last year. In order to bring some fun home, Evans Girl Scout Troop 30166 surprised them by decorating/ raking outside their home for fall. The people helping out with supplies for the girls were Kwilos Farm Stand, Rob Turnbull, Morgan Theophilus, George Haier, Terri Blasz, and Brandie Woodard. Lions Donate to Christmas Basket Fund
The Evans Township Lions Club, at their regular twice monthly meeting, donated $500.00 to the V.F.W Post 5798 Christmas Food Basket Fund drive. Each year at Christmas time, the V.F.W. distributes over 150 food baskets to needy families in the Evans/Brant area. The Lions club has historically supported this effort with monetary donations. Southtowns Catholic School Crystals
Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 6 Science Class explored the different ways of making crystals. Growing crystals is a fun way to explore interest in chemistry and geology. The crystals were grown from common household substances; salt, epson salt & borax. They also used petri dishes, measuring cups and hot water to see which one made the biggest crystal reaction. Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month
The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Jaylene Baron and Samuel Martinez as September’s Members of the Month. Each month, Club Staff select members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, Daily Challenges, Arts & Crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Library & Nature Clubs, etc.
Jaylene was chosen for MOTM because she is always in good spirits and truly enjoys helping out the staff, often without being called upon to do so.
Jaylene is polite and courteous, and a staple of the Club. She is in third grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary, Mrs. Ware is her favorite teacher, and she really likes math class. At the Club, Jaylene enjoys working on arts and crafts projects with Miss Mickey. When she’s at home, you are most likely to find Jaylene playing with her prized stuffed animals. When it comes to books, she is a fan of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” and her favorite current song is “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes. Jaylene’s role models are Miss Emily and Mr. Justin from the Club, and when she grows up she would like to work here too!
Samuel is in first grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary where he likes gym and Mrs. Whipple. It comes as no surprise that his favorite thing to do at the Club is help the staff with various tasks. Away from the Club, Samuel likes to play Minecraft, and his favorite song is “God’s Not Dead.” He is also a big fan of the “Pete the Cat” books. Samuel’s role models are police officers, and when he grows up he would like to join the Navy. Samuel is extremely polite and well-mannered to staff and kids alike, especially for his young age. Each day he arrives to the Club with a noticeable sense of excite-
ment and joy, and whenever the staff needs a hand he is there to help with tremendous optimism. As a firstyear member, Samuel has been a welcome addition to our Club family.
Along with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Jasmine Carter. Jasmine is one of our everyday members and is adamant about getting her homework done while at the Club. Jasmine leads the homework room with the most “Power Hour Points” for completing assignments and educational activities, but still manages to squeeze in plenty of other fun Club offerings. One of her top activities she likes at the Club is arts and crafts. When she’s not at the Club she likes playing with her friends. Jasmine is currently in 5th grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary where Mrs. Kauzala is her favorite teacher and role model, and she likes art class. Jeff Kinney is her favorite author and “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes is her favorite tune. When she grows up, she would like to be an illustrator.
In addition, we would like to acknowledge our Junior Staff of the Month. Junior Staff are Club members that work at the Snack Shack, as well as assist staff in running daily activities and help with miscellaneous chores. Junior Staff must complete applications and go through an interview in order to be hired. September’s Junior Staff of the Month is Julian Martinez who is new to the Club as an eighth grader from Lake Shore Middle. His favorite teacher is Mr. Tonelli and he enjoys Language Arts. At the Club, Julian loves working at the Snack Shack and he is a dependable model employee. He is exceptionally cordial to customers and has a knack for great customer service. At home, Julian likes to read James Patterson books, play basketball, and listen to his favorite song “Pompei.” Julian’s role model is Jesus, and when he gets older he would like to be a paleon-
tologist.
We are so proud of our Student, Junior Staff, and Members of the Month, and would like to congratulate them on their achievements! There is more to being on the Town Board than attending a work session or a Town Board Meeting. There are approximately 20 municipal meetings a month that a Town representative can attend. These meetings cover specific government information, financial planning, business development, grant opportunities, etc. ...
The greatest benefit from attending these meetings is the networking that takes place. The current Evans Board attends few or none of these meetings. I will attend these meetings, as your councilman, to find answers, solve issues, and plan for the future of Evans. Evans deserves to have a voice and a face because we matter, especially the senior citizens of this community and their senior center and bringing more services to them.

I can hardly believe it’s been 4 years since being elected as your Town Clerk. A lot has happened in those four years. A few of the changes I made are:
• Adding Saturday hours, allowing those who work during the week to utilize Town Clerk’s services
• Began accepting Credit/Debit cards & e-Checks to allow you more payment options
• Made tax bills available online, and also added online payments for your convenience
• Worked hard to bring the Lakeshore School Tax collection back to the Brant Town Hall
• Secured two NYS Records Mgmnt Grants totaling $80,432. One financed a brand new climate controlled Inactive Records room, the other paid for wide format scanners and labor to digitize Town maps, etc. This Grant also benefits the Village as they are now approved to digitize their records for ease of access and preservation following the adopted resolution I drafted, allowing them to use the scanners.
I accomplished these changes during a hard time in my life. Those who know me are aware of the long term illness my husband of 35 years endured for three of my four years in office. Sadly, he passed away in August 2014. His passing was a difficult time, but it did not stop me from moving forward in my service to you. I am asking for your continued support on November 3rd. I have many ideas to further improve the service you get from the Town Clerk’s Office, and as always, I accept suggestions. Let my 12 years experience be the reason you vote for me on November 3rd.

The race for the Town of Brant Highway Superintendent has unfortunately devolved into the sewer of dirty politics due to a false allegation by challenger, Bill Friend. Mr. Friend has stated to numerous individuals that incumbent Joe Giambrone has been using the town’s backhoe for personal purposes.
In the interest of full disclosure and to protect Joe’s reputation, we will respond to the claim.
It is important to remember that Mr. Friend does not work for or is affiliated with the Town of Brant in any capacity other than being a resident. So any information broadcasted by Mr. Friend related to the highway department is, at best, second hand and, at worst, total fabrication.
Mr. Friend’s claim is a complete fabrication. He is circulating that Joe has used the town’s backhoe for his personal reasons. That is simply bewildering, because Joe has owned his own backhoe for the last 25 years! Mr. Friend’s ignorance or selective omission may stem from his confusion about what backhoe belongs to the town. Joe’s personal backhoe can be found at the town’s maintenance facility from time to time, particularly in the winter. During past winters, Joe leaves his own backhoe at the town’s facility for back up use if needed.
With his vast experience, Joe fully understands that there is always a possibility that the town’s backhoe can break down just when it is really needed. If that does happen during the characteristic snow storms of the area, his salt trucks will be out taking care of the roads uninterrupted. At no cost to the township.
Since Mr. Friend and his advisors are making the accusation, we are sure that it can be backed up by photographs, dates, times and places where the misuse supposedly happened. The use of rumor, innuendo and/or stretching the truth to malign an opponent is a shallow tactic employed by the candidate.
Months ago, Mr. Friend entered the race for highway superintendent. We have yet to hear anything substantive about why he is a better candidate for the job. Joe has always completed any task required during his 30 plus year tenure. Carmen Vacco, Mr. Friend’s political mentor, in an interview with the Buffalo News clearly stated how the job will benefit Mr. Friend (giving him more time on his farm and a shorter commute to work). Interestingly no mention has ever been made of how the Town of Brant would benefit from Bill Friend in the position.
Maybe over the next 2 weeks Mr. Friend can elevate himself by generating new ideas instead of using it to tear down his opponent.

Town of Brant Residents,
The Town has been given an opportunity to purchase approximately 50 acres of Lake front property with 365 feet of sandy beach. The property has 10 acres of untouched old growth forest with eagle nests and wild game. This property is very unique, because it is the only large parcel of woodland from Ohio to Niagara Falls that stretches from Lake Erie without interruption for 50 acres. The owner will not sell the property for development because she wants it to remain preserved and a natural habitat. Therefore there are two options for the owner to sell. 1.) To the State or County in which it would be open to everyone in the State and be run as a state or county park (thus charging a fee to enter) or The Town of Brant purchasing this property and giving our residents free access to the Lake and educational preserve for our future generations to enjoy. The Town board recognizes that we are the only town on Lake Erie that does not have our own beach. The board is in the process of purchasing this land for $600,000 in which we feel is a bargain. Seldom do opportunities come about with this magnitude to better our community and give our children and future generations opportunity like this. According to assessment data Beach front property runs at $1700 per foot ($595,000 just for beach front and 100 foot deep) the property stretches for 44 acres from the beach and runs across old Lake Shore road for 11 more acres. The purchase would not affect the 2016 budget and we foresee no increase in taxes because of this purchase.
In the past 5 years the town purchased and renovated the school to become our town hall for $475,000 also bought $160,000 Kenworth Snow Plow Truck, $35,000 Ford F-450 1 ton dump truck, $28,000 Expedition Police Car & $37,000 crown Victoria Car a total of ($735,000) and your taxes have gone down for the past 8 years in row. The town board is in the planning stages of a master plan that would include 3 Pavilions that could be rented out to town residents also 2 or 3 Gazebo’s for meditation and relaxation and a classroom educational center for our youth recreation program.
We have been discussing this purchase for the past 5 months at Town Board meetings and we have held 3 special meetings during this time. The Sun News Paper printed 2 articles also to inform our residents and we are placing this Pennysaver ad to inform the residents of our intentions to help make the Town of Brant a better place to live.

Supervisor Dash paid ONE MILLION DOLLARS for grass cutting on vacant properties over the last 4 years. This work was not put out for competitive bids; instead the work was done by an associate of the building inspector whose address is not in the Town of Evans.
Why did this landscaper make approximately $250,000 EACH year for grass cutting?
NYS General Municipal Law AND the Town’s own purchasing policy states that such expenditures over $30,000 must be competitively bid out.
Why wasn’t this work bid out, who benefited? NOT THE TAXPAYERS!

As your Town Supervisor, I promise to follow the law and will make sure the taxpayers receive maximum value for their tax dollars.

How does a Town Code Enforcement Officer, who is paid a full-time salary with benefits upwards of $100,000 from Evans taxpayers, work for the Village of Fredonia 5 days a week?
Why has Supervisor Dash allowed this to happen?
Why has the Code Enforcement Office been allowed to purchase a third vehicle? Does Supervisor Dash know where the town assigned vehicle is? Is it traveling to Fredonia? And why is it unmarked? That is against Town policy.
This Code Officer is not there for Evans taxpayers’ during Town business hours! (But he donated a hundred dollars to the Supervisor Dash’s campaign.)
As your Town Supervisor, I will monitor how your tax dollars are being spent and ensure you receive the service that YOUR tax dollars are paying for!

Funeral Train Route Postmark

As one of the 16 Post Offices participating in the 150th Anniversary of the Lincoln Funeral Train Route Postmark, the Derby Post Office has been busy hand-stamping all the mailed requests received. June 30th was the first day this unique postmark was available, and the interest since has been amazing! At July 6th, over 153 requests had been processed, with plenty more arriving daily. The Lincoln Train Postmark, designed by Angola native Christian J. LoGrasso, 2” tall, by 4” wide, is specific to Derby, NY. While Derby, NY is not listed on the Buffalo and Erie Rail Road Time Table, we know that Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral Train did indeed pass through the area on April 27, 1865. Derby Postmaster Sandy Snyder, informed us that she received requests for the Postmark from places as far away as Belgium! In addition to Derby, other participating Post Offices are: Buffalo, Athol Springs, Hamburg, Lakeview, North Evans, Angola, Farnham, Irving, Silver Creek, Sheridan, Dunkirk, Brocton, Portland, Westfield and Ripley. The “Lincoln Postmark Project” is initiated by the BrantFarnham Historical Society, in cooperation with the Buffalo Office of the USPS. Evans, Hamburg, Hanover and Brocton Historical Societies have also been strongly supportive and “on board” with this project!!

The Lake Shore Freshman Academy has spent the first weeks of school participating in team building activities to help them acclimate to high school life. By working together, the incoming class has come to understand that they are part of one team - the class of 2019. On this team, everyone matters, no one falls through the cracks, and every student is expected to graduate with their classmates in 2019. A large part of the Academy's acclimation process is team building and cooperative learning. At the close of September, the entire class participated in the Annual Freshman Team Building Boot Camp where they had to work together and with their teachers in various fun, physical, and mental challenges. Following Boot Camp, they celebrated their first official Homecoming Week participating in many fun school traditions all week long. Over 150 freshmen participated in our hallway decorating challenge earning them first place overall.
The Freshman Academy believes involvement is key to student success in high school, so students are quickly immersed in fun, positive programs that encourage student participation. Statistics show that students who are involved in more than just academics enjoy the high school experience than those who do not. They also more likely to have a strong attendance record; when students have good attendance, they have better grades.
