Lake Shore Central School District Adopts “Next Generation” Paperless Meeting Technology

The Lake Shore Central School District is leveraging the power of the internet to improve the governance process while saving time, taxpayer dollars and the environment. This new eGovernance initiative will replace the old and costly method of compiling, printing, binding and distributing paper agenda packets by hand. This easy-to-use solution will enable the organization to maximize the effectiveness of their board meetings with increased transparency, providing a basis for better and more open communication with the public, while increasing productivity and saving thousands of dollars annually.

“Our implementation of BoardDocs will greatly improve the efficiency of our Board of Education work,” said Kristine DeMartino, clerk for the Lake Shore Central School District. “Offering meeting agendas and supporting documents on the internet allows our Board members more time to digest large amounts of information before making policy decisions. It also saves time by cutting back on preparing printed documents.”

The paperless meeting solution, called “BoardDocs®”, was developed in the year 2000 for a Georgia school district. Since then, hundreds of governing bodies nationwide have adopted the system. Electronic distribution saves time and resources while providing unprecedented public access via the Lake Shore Central School District website to agenda items and other governing body-related information. This process allows interested parties to review information prior to board meetings.

After meetings, individuals can review agenda items and see what action the governing body took, complete with voting results. All documents associated with a given meeting are automatically archived and can be accessed by date or by using the system’s comprehensive search feature.

The Lake Shore Central School District will also use the BoardDocs technology to publish its policies and procedures online for the public to view. Previously, paper versions of policy manuals were distributed and maintained throughout the organization. Now, by publishing them online, all interested parties can have access to the most current and historical meeting information immediately. Online distribution will also reduce the expense of distributing policies and procedures.

Additionally, BoardDocs increases the amount of time members of the governing body have to review agenda information, enabling them to better prepare for meetings. Under the old paper system, meeting packets could not be distributed until every document had been prepared, submitted and approved. Once all the documents were submitted, staff members would typically spend two days assembling the documents into packets before distributing them to the governing body. Through the MetaSearch feature, members of the governing body will also have access to best practices from other organizations that are using the system, allowing them to gain important knowledge about initiatives other governing bodies have considered and implemented.

BoardDocs uses a structured, collaborative workflow that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs and legal requirements of public school boards, county commissions, municipal governments and a wide variety of other types of governing bodies.

The Town of Evans is fortunate to have citizens volunteering their time to serve on Town Advisory Committees. An example of these committees is the Conservation Board, Economic Development Committee, Planning Board, and Sturgeon Point Advisory Board, just to mention a few.

I respect the dedication and talent of each volunteer, and I look forward to working with every committee to achieve town goals.

The current Supervisor is not communicating with these boards; he fails to listen to their suggestions and execute their ideas.

As a volunteer on the Planning Board for the last eight years, it has been very disappointing that we have only had one meeting in the last 12 months.

The Planning Department and the Building Department should play an integral part in economic development: THAT IS NOT HAPPENING.

I will work with every Advisory Board and every Town Committee to assure that THE TOWN OF EVANS WILL MOVE FORWARD!

It's time for fall! Students in the pre-school four-year-old program at SS. Peter & Paul Community School, recently learned how to make apple sauce. Due to unfavorable weather on the weekend of September 12th, the 6th annual Brian Galfo Memorial Softball Tournament was canceled. Snap Fitness 5K Raises $3,000 For St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Allison Tilert, Manger at Snap Fitness in Derby, NY announced today that their 5K Run/Walk held on Sunday, September 20, 2015 raised just over $3,000 for St Jude Children's Research Hospital in support of local Derby resident 7yr old Evelyn Thuman.

According to Tilert, this is the third year the club has held a 5K race, but the first year proceeds went to St Jude In addition to the race there was a UNYTS Blood Drive and Basket Raffle.

"We are really thankful for everyone who was able to come out to support, volunteer and participate in this great cause. With the help of St Jude, Evelyn was able to not only participate in, but complete her first 5K," said Tilert.

SS. Peter & Paul, a Community School located in Ham burg, recently completed an exciting cafeteria renovation project on their campus.

The space, which was originally created in the early 1950s, has been upgraded to accommodate 21st century needs.

"We are all so very excited to have a wonderfully renovat ed cafeteria for the students of our Saints Peter and Paul, a Community School to enjoy," said Pastor Arthur Mattulke. "It is a true blessing to have a new multi purpose space with air conditioning, handicap accessibility and new tech nology for parish and school meetings. We are very grateful for the generosity and sacrifice of our parishioners and our parent guild who have joined together to make this dream a reality!"

The space will also feature a projector unit that students, faculty, staff, families and parishioners can utilize for presentations and meetings.

Psoriasis Can Precede Psoriatic Arthritis

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male. I had to stop playing golf about two years ago due to joint pain. I had psoriasis from age 15 until I was 40. I am retired from the Navy and had to be hospitalized twice during my time in service due to my skin. Why it disappeared at age 40, I don’t know. Is it possible that I could have psoriatic arthritis? One doctor I saw said that I had to have psoriasis in order to get it. I saw that you said that sometimes the arthritis shows up before the skin lesions. Can it show up after you have quit having the lesions? -- Anon.

ANSWER: Indeed, psoriatic arthritis can show up years after psoriasis starts and when there are no skin lesions. Often, pits in the nails or other nail changes are seen in those with psoriatic arthritis. However, having psoriasis doesn’t protect you from other types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Since psoriatic arthritis is so destructive, you should see an expert, perhaps a rheumatologist. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. DEAR DR. ROACH: Do varicose veins in the leg

still return blood? Does circulation diminish if they are removed? Should the elderly avoid removal? What if a vena cava ﬁlter exists for a one-time DVT 25 years ago? -- S.S.

ANSWER: Varicose veins are dilated veins. They are very common, especially as we get older, and they seem to run in families. They often come because of leaky valves inside the veins. A previous blood clot is a risk factor, and a ﬁlter may make varicose veins and clots somewhat more likely. They do continue to function, returning blood. They should be treated conservatively, with leg elevation, exercise and compression, such as using pressure stockings. I seldom recommend more-aggressive therapy, but if they are symptomatic (pain, tightness, skin irritation) despite a good trial of conservative treatment, they can be treated with laser or radiofrequency ablation, by

injecting medication into or around them, or by vein stripping. A vascular surgeon is the expert on these treatments.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 63-year-old male who had a subarachnoid hemorrhage in 2008. The source of the bleed could not be found, and fortunately I came out of it in good shape, with no adverse effects. My doctor prescribed diclofenac [an NSAID] for joint and muscle pain, and it does help. Do you see a problem with this, considering that it thins the blood? -- T.O.M.

ANSWER: Since the aneurism wasn’t repaired, I would not recommend taking the NSAID unless your consulting neurosurgeon has speciﬁcally told you that it is safe to do so. I wouldn’t be brave enough to prescribe it without that OK, even though there is some evidence saying it may be safe.
