Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer Weekly Recap

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated visiting Eden by a score of 4-1 on Friday night, Septmeber 19th.

Captain AJ Bergum scored twice for the Eagles, while German foreign exchange student Fabian Stephan scored his first goal of the season, and Max Eastman also scored his first varsity goal. Chris Beckley added two assists and John Park turned in a strong game in goal to earn his first varsity victory. Lake Shore turned in a determined effort following a lopsided 8-0 loss at Hamburg days earlier.

On Monday, Septmeber 22nd, the team lost to visiting Williamsville South by a score of 5-1. German foreign exchange student Simon Lemhofer scored his first goal of the season on a nice set up from captain Andrew McDonagh.

The Eagles fought hard in this match up, but fell short at the end.

On Wednesday, September 24 the team lost to visiting Iroquois by a score of 1-0. The Eagles played well in this closely contested match, but conceded the only goal of the game with nine minutes remaining.

Pack 591 Discovers Flight

Cub Scouts from Pack 591 discovered the principles of lift, flight and aeronautics at their weekly pack meeting on Tuesday Night. The Cubs used the fun of planes, helicopters and helium balloons to learn a little about what keeps those big machines up in the air.

Several students from Southtowns Catholic School came to Woodlawn Beach on Saturday, September 20 to participate in the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. The Beach Sweep is part of the International Coastal Cleanup & Ocean Conservancy. The kids collected and recorded the garbage that they found in a 2 hour time period and all the information will be sent to the Ocean Conservancy. Chamber of Commerce Participates in Great Lakes Beach Sweep

Pictured above are directors and friends of the Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce, who participated in the Great Lakes Beach Sweep on Saturday September 20th. The event, which is designed to clean up shorelines of various man-made refuse, was held from 10 AM- Noon. Lake Erie Coordinator Sharon Trembath led volunteers cleaning up waste from area shorelines from Westfield to Woodlawn State Park in Hamburg. It was the 29th year that the Great Lakes Beach Sweep has joined forces with the International Coastal Cleanup. Last year, more than 5600 volunteers removed 62,633 pounds of debris from about 250 miles of shoreline across New York State.

AN OPEN LETTER OF WARNING TO MY NEIGHBORS; The recent change over from the Evans Water Authority to the Erie County Water Authority has caused me some concern. I recently suffered a casualty loss of well over three thousand dollars due to what my excavation and plumbing contractor labeled; "... a compression fitting on the new water line never having been sufficiently tightened during the original installation." The repair required no new parts. What we had to do was to dig up the line and properly install the compression fitting.

This could be put down to my personal bad luck. Some worker just had a lapse which I am sure has happened to anyone who has ever worked. Neither of the agencies was any help. The Evans Water Authority is defunct and the Erie County Water Authority "has no responsibility for the water lines after the meter."

The reason behind this letter is not to ask for help in this matter. I have taken care of my immediate problem and already have borne all of the costs and responsibilities. I have water and a debt that I will feel- but manage. What prompts this letter is the hope that those of you who are my neighbors will take a warning and a good look at the realities of your water supply.

You are now responsible for the lines that you did not install; and if as in my case the meter is now located some distance from your home, that can be several hundred feet or more. You probably did not request the line, contract to have it done or, oversee its installation. It was all done to the specifications of the Erie County Water Authority as a precondition for the turn over.

"My" meter is now located across someone other citizen's property and I am responsible for that line up to the meter according to the Erie County Water Authority spokespersons with whom I had contact. Two of my neighbors are even further away from their meters. I wonder if they would need to procure an easement from me merely to replace a defective line. I expect that is one "property right" that has not as yet been taken from us.

Replacing these deep water lines could be a catastrophic eventuality. Even careless digging by one's neighbors, on their own property, could entail major financial and legal costs. Few of us possess the skills and equipment to do the jobs ourselves. The disruption to service would add urgency to the equation. It is difficult to imagine sound reasoning under such conditions.

When the lines were installed, the Evans Water Authority contracted someone who used a horizontal drilling technique to install the new lines. They were, of course, able to access the taxpayer base to finance the operation. Most of us do not have individual pockets that are that deep.

I hope that I am not unduly alarmed about the hardships that such conferred responsibility entails for all the other hapless citizens out there; but I suspect that if your experience in relating to Town and County parallels mine, it is something to consider and ask questions about.

It was my understanding that we organized ourselves into governments to share the load of infrastructure projects that should benefit most of us most of the time. What ever happened to make us sole providers; and can we even do it alone?

I have lived in the Evans area for over half a century and have witnessed the inevitable changes wrought by time.

Naturally there are good and bad changes and the Eleventh commandment: "Thou shalt not whine." has been the one I have most tried to keep.

I have seen unproven economic theories raised to the status of religious belief; a continuous growth in technology and physical convenience and the steady growth of outsourcing as "good for us" in the long run. While I remain unconvinced of what is considered by many as obvious truth, I have kept my own counsel; voted my conscience and taken the losses of our folly with the best grace that I can muster. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Edge of Tomorrow” (PG13) -- Tom Cruise gets ripped apart by space aliens and resurrected over and over again until he gets it right. In this unfortunate futuristic setting, a powerful alien army is spreading over Earth. Cruise plays a military officer who’s more of a spokesman than a rifleman -- until he mouths off and gets sent to the front line. He doesn’t last long in combat, but whenever he dies, he just wakes up at the beginning of the day. Using his Groundhog Day power, Cruise does a little better each time.

The whole time, I wished I was the one with the videogame controller, and not watching somebody else play. The upside is that the movie looks like a game worth playing. The core gimmick of the movie is used to good effect, generating a rhythm of intense action.

“A Million Ways to Die in the West” (R) -- This Western parody shows that people didn’t need epic gunfights and wild horse chases to die spectacularly in the Wild West, there were plenty of awful ways to die a humiliating and mundane death.
