Southtowns Catholic School US Monuments & Memorials

The students in Miss Cassi Johnson’s Grade 3 class recently had to pick a United States monument or memorial to research for their class. Each child had to right a paper, make a model and then present it to the class. The paper had to include facts and why they chose that monument or memorial. With all the heart that went into the projects, the school sent them on a road trip to local American Legions and VFW Posts so that Veterans can see what the kids made.

DEAR DR. ROACH: This question is just too embarrassing for me to even sign my name. I get many infected pubic hairs that are painful. Is this normal? Do other people get them? I have had them off and on my whole life, but the past two years have been just awful. Some are like boils, and it takes them many weeks to go away. What can I do?

I have never mentioned this to my doctor. I won’t even go for my Pap test if I have one, because I don’t want the doctor to see it. -- Anon.

ANSWER: Infected hair follicles are common, and when they are in the pubic area or in the armpits, they can be quite painful and last a long time. They often are caused by Staphylococcus, which nowadays can be resistant to multiple antibiotics (MRSA).

Please don’t be embarrassed by these. I guarantee you that your doctor has seen them many times before.

The sooner you are seen, the faster you can get relief. And you certainly don’t want to delay important tests like your Pap for these common infections. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 56-year-old female. I recently have been having terrible pain in my joints. It is so bad at night that I can’t sleep. I recently went to a rheumatologist because I had an elevated rheumatoid factor (it wasn’t extremely high). I was told I have arthritis and a high risk for

rheumatoid arthritis. I was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was shocked and embarrassed! I had always thought that fibro was not a real disease. I feel bad and tired almost every day, and I am so sick of it! -- S.S. ANSWER: Some of my colleagues still doubt it, but I think that fibromyalgia certainly is a real disease.

There is no doubt that there are a large number of people with chronic pain in the muscles and soft tissues who meet the diagnostic tests for fibromyalgia, which are all based on history and exam -- there’s no blood test or X-ray for fibromyalgia, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. The current thinking is that fibromyalgia is due to alterations in the perception of pain by the central nervous system.

The most common symptom is aching in the body, usually in the muscles and joints.

Fatigue and poor-quality sleep also are nearly universal in fibromyalgia.

Depression is highly prevalent in people with fibromyalgia, and in my opinion, the depression is more likely caused by the chronic pain and fatigue than the other way around.

My opinion is that it is better to have a diagnosis of fibromyalgia because, even though fibromyalgia isn’t completely understood, it is a starting point for understanding and treating chronic pain.

Tricyclic antidepressants are the most common initial treatment of fibromyalgia, because they affect the way pain is processed. They are usually started at far, far below the effective dose for depression.

Feeling a sense of control over the pain, continuing to work and exercising more are all associated with a better outcome in fibromyalgia.

Southtowns Catholic School Students Friendship Project

Miss Cassi Johnson's Grade 3 class completed a Friendship Project as part of their end of the year Religion Project.

Each student had to choose another classmate out of a basket and that classmate was the main subject of the project.

They had to write a speech that included positive attributes, what brings happiness to that person, why they were grateful for their friendship and why they were proud of them.

When they were done, the student had to create a pin for their classmate. After the speeches were read, they class had a "pinning" ceremony. Pictured: Emma Labby, Delaney Fish, Alex Davis & Cailum Irwin with their pins.

July was a busy month for the Grandview Bay Community Association as it sponsored the 4th of July Patriotic Parade; the Family Picnic at the Town Park; Central Stairs Project; and the Lane Preservation Cleanup. Many wonderful supporters contributed to the Parade success: Lake Erie Beach Cub Pack 262; Ace Hardware, Derby; Town of Evans Police; Town of Evans Highway Department; Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Department; Bluebelle the Clown; GVBCA members who volunteered their time and 200 marchers and spectators! See you all next 4th. The Family Picnic, chaired by Matt and Mary Quinn, provided an opportunity to meet and greet neighbors while sharing a delicious picnic supper at the Town Park. Thanks to Connors Hot Dog Stand and Lakeside Market for contributions in the food department. The Alumidock stairs at Central Lane will be delivered the last week of July thanks to the monumental effort of Robin Kettering and her Team. Appreciation goes to the DEC, and Town of Evans for Project assistance. The Lane Preservation Committee is now beautifying Lanes to the beach for residents of GVB. Lake Shore Central Schools Announces Board of Education Appointments

President, Vice-President re-elected, new member sworn in and student representative appointed Lake Shore Central Schools recently re-elected two standing members of the Board of Education and approved a new member at their annual reorganizational meeting. A new student representative was also appointed at the session.

Jennifer Michalec and Carla Thompson were unanimously re-elected as President and Vice- President, respectively, through 2016 while Kathleen Chiavetta was sworn in as a new member after being elected in May. High school student Emma Franco will serve as the student representative for the upcoming school year.

“We are extremely pleased to retain Ms. Michalec and Ms. Thompson as our current Board of Education leaders,” said James Przepasniak, superintendent of Lake Shore Central Schools. “The Board is also looking forward to the input of two new voices, newly elected member Kathleen Chiavetta, and student representative Emma Franco.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Strangerland” (R) -- In a dusty town in the Australian desert, a mother is pushed into a nightmare when her two teenage children disappear in the middle of the night. Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes play Catherine and Matthew Parker, a couple already dealing with a divide in their marriage and alarmingly provocative behavior from their 15-year-old daughter. After the disappearance, a local policeman (Hugo Weaving) leads the search as an epic dust storm swallows the town.

The cinematography and setting shine, which carries the sense of isolation and smallness you’re supposed to feel. Kidman does a great job maneuvering the heavy emotions set on her character. Unfortunately, the movie struggles with pacing while the script keeps hitting the same notes of dread and anxiety.

SCS held their Middle School Awards during the last week of school. All Middle School Students are eligible and several scholarships were awarded. Congratulations to Charlie Rath on winning the Saint John Paul II Parish Holy Name Scholarship. Charlie is entering the 8th Grade at Southtowns Catholic School. Congratulations to Emma Gian for being awarded The Ace Award from the Saint John Paul II Seniors. Emma is entering 9th Grade at Lakeshore in September.

Southtowns Catholic School Students Friendship Project

Miss Cassi Johnson's Grade 3 class completed a Friendship Project as part of their end of the year Religion Project.

Each student had to choose another classmate out of a basket and that classmate was the main subject of the project.

They had to write a speech that included positive attributes, what brings happiness to that person, why they were grateful for their friendship and why they were proud of them.

When they were done, the student had to create a pin for their classmate. After the speeches were read, they class had a "pinning" ceremony. Pictured: Emma Labby, Delaney Fish, Alex Davis & Cailum Irwin with their pins.
