Elizabeth J. Ciesla of Angola, NY died Sunday June 14, 2015 in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, she was 67. Loving mother of Joseph and the late Anthony Ciesla; sister of Barbara Kent, Patricia (Jeff) Russell, William Slattery, James (late Ellen) Slattery and the late Lynn (Joseph) Brodzinski.

Mary M. Koessler

Mary M. Koessler of Lakeview, the wife of the late Buffalo printing magnate John W. Koessler Jr. and generous philanthropist to various Western New York charities and organizations, died Tuesday in Hamburg after a short illness. Mrs. Koessler was 87.

Born in Buffalo, the former Mary Pendy was a life-long Western New York resident.

She graduated from Mount St. Mary’s High School in Kenmore and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in business from D’Youville College, which also later awarded her an honorary doctorate in humanities.

Mrs. Koessler was an active Roman Catholic and was involved in the Bishops Committee on Laity, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and was a member of St. John Paul II parish in Lake View.

She earned the St. Joseph the Worker award for her dedication and service to the church.

Her memberships also included the Buffalo Club and Wanakah Country Club.

Mrs. Koessler was the widow of John Koessler, the former CEO of Greater Buffalo Press, who died in April 1997, and she was the daughter-in-law of the late J. Walter Koessler Sr., the namesake of Canisius College’s Koessler Athletic Center.

She is survived by three sons, John W. Koessler III, William and Eugene; three daughters, Mary Clare Smith, Carol A. and Barbara L.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday 6/20 in St. John Paul II Roman Catholic Church, Arrangements by the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home. __________

Southtowns Catholic School Memorial Day Facebook Challenge

In honor of Memorial Day, students at Southtowns Catholic School celebrated our veterans. They kicked off our celebration with a patriotic themed Spring Concert, "I Hear America Singing". Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 students learned songs such as “Yankee Doodle” and “This Land is Your Land” In music class; they created art work that highlighted our national landmarks. In technology, they learned about Digital Citizenship and how digital communication tools such as Facebook and Twitter can reach and impact people all over the world. This photo was posted to Facebook and people were asked to like the post, leave a comment about what city or state they are in and share the post with a veteran, or friend of a veteran to let them know that the students, staff and administration at Southtowns Catholic School say thank you for serving our country! Making Vitamin D Without Sunlight

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about vitamin D-3 pills. How does 400 mg fit into such a tiny pill? I also thought you needed sunlight to make vitamin D. -- A.S. ANSWER: Four hundred mg is very small. Most of the tablet isn’t even vitamin D -- it’s starch and other materials to hold the tablet together.

The skin does make vitamin D-3 from precursors in the presence of sunlight.

However, there are several factors that affect this process. During winter months at moderately high latitudes (above the line from Los Angeles to Atlanta), the sunlight might not be strong enough to efficiently convert enough vitamin D, so many are vitamin-D-deficient during winter.

People who don’t go outside, who usually wear clothing and hats to cover their skin or who have darker skin are less able to create vitamin D. People over 70 also are less able to make their own vitamin D. This is why many foods are supplemented with vitamin D. Even so, a sizable proportion of the population has low levels of vitamin D. There remains great controversy about whether supplementation will improve overall health. Studies are ongoing to test the effect of vitamin D supplementation to reduce fracture risk, improve muscle function or reduce cancer risk. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You mentioned lupus in a recent column. If you mean what I think you do, in terms of overall health and maybe living longer and feeling better, then yes, a brisk walk is nearly as good for you as jogging.

Jogging probably is better for preventing osteoporosis, since it gives more impact to the bones, but on the other hand it is harder on the joints. If your goal is to get faster and win races, then you need to practice going faster.
