ERIE 2 BOCES Carrier Educational Center Students Place at SkillsUSA State Conference

The Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Carrier Educational Center is proud to announce two students recently placed in the top three in their specific competitions at the New York State SkillsUSA Conference in Syracuse, New York. Chrisitan Kortum (Lake Shore) and Justin Miller (Silver Creek) took 2nd place in the Wed Design competition. Both are students Greg Cole’s Information Technology/Computer Systems class.

“The hard work and dedication these students put forth in the classroom culminates with this competition, and it shows not only in results but what they learn in a hands-on setting,” said Jaime Venning, director of career and technical education at Erie 2 BOCES. “They are representative of the high-caliber education they getting in each of their individual programs, and everyone at the Carrier Center is very pleased with their efforts.”

SkillsUSA contests are timed, and each contestant is judged on a number of subject-specific criteria including knowledge of safe work processes, proper use of tools where applicable and the ability to follow plans and directions. Contestants are judged on their overall quality of work and finished products. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations including health careers.

All students attending the Hewes Educational Center are eligible to participate in SkillsUSA per their course regulations.

In the event the first place finishers decide not to move on to the National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri next month, Kortum and Miller would be eligible to participate. “I am very proud of these students and the hard work they show in the lab and in the field,” said Cole. “They are very dedicated and driven individuals, which is evident in their second place finish this year. Christian and Justin are just two examples of the great work going on at the Carrier Center and all of our students have very bright futures ahead of them.”

The Carrier Center offers seven two-year CTE programs that allow high school juniors and seniors to gain experience and technical knowledge in highly specialized fields while earning a Regents Diploma. Students who complete program requirements receive a Technical Endorsement on their diplomas and are prepared to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation or pursue more advanced levels of study at post-secondary educational institutions. Lake Shore Music Teacher Named as Recipient of Prestigious Award and Erie County Music Educators Association

Eric Blodgett has been named a recipient of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Erie County Music Educators Association Award for Excellence in Music Education. This award was given to Eric Blodgett to recognize his hard work and dedication to the profession and his passion for fostering the love of music within our students. The award was presented at the BPO’s Celebration of Music Education Concert at Kleinhan’s Music Hall on May 14, 2016.

Mr. Blodgett graduated from the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Percussion Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Acoustical Physics and received his Masters in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia. In his 21 years of teaching at Lake Shore, he has served as the Music Department Chairman, has directed the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Musical Pit, Pep and Marching Bands, and instrumental lessons. He spent four years as the district’s Elementary Band Director before assuming the High School responsibilities in 1999.

Mr. Blodgett received the Lake Shore Board of Education Outstanding Service Award in 2011, was recognized as one of the top 25 teachers in Western NY by Business First in 2013, and has been included in “Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers.” He has served as ECMEA Librarian, Chairperson for ECMEA and NYSSMA events and groups, has hosted All-County performances at Lake Shore, is a former member of the Maelstrom Percussion Ensemble, and ran a successful private percussion studio working with students from all over Erie County for over 20 years.

Mr. Blodgett’s bands consistently perform at state, local, and national music festivals receiving Gold, Gold with Distinction, and Superior designations. The Lake Shore Bands are two-time Grand Champions at the Performing Arts Consultants New York City Music Festival. He has had students recognized as the Top Instrumental Soloists at P.A.C. and Festival Disney. While on tour in New York City, two of his students were selected to sit in with the musical pit of the Broadway Show, “Chicago” during a live performance.

The Town of Evans designated May 6th as “Lake Shore Senior High Bands Day” and the Lake Shore Bands have been recognized in the School Band and Orchestra Magazine. His students have worked with the BPO, the late Maynard Ferguson, and his Big Bop Nouveau Band, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and the Dallas Brass in addition to multiple guest solo artists for their yearly District Jazz concert.

Mr. Blodgett’s career has only been possible through the continued support of his wife Tracey and their children Brooke, Zach, Jolie, and Cole. He would like to thank his colleagues, the Lake Shore High School Band Boosters, and the Lake Shore School Administration and Community for their continued support.

Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Gabrielle Siegel and John Haskins as March’s Members of the Month. Club Staff select members that have positive character values, are respectful, responsible, caring, and good citizens. The MOTM should also participate in various Club programs such as sports, games, arts & crafts, power hour, project learn, cooking club, club council, library and nature clubs, etc.

Gabby is a very good, well-mannered member who is always respectful to the staff and others. Despite only being a member since February, she has made quite an impression. She has a very positive attitude and is eager to participate in many of the Club’s activities. Gabby is a first grader at Highland Elementary, Mrs. Wild is her favorite teacher, and she really likes ELA class. At the Club, Gabby enjoys playing in the gym the most, especially any games with the wubble bubble. Away from the Club, her favorite thing to do is play soccer, of which she is a diehard fan. She likes to read Dr. Seuss books, and her favorite musical artist is Taylor Swift. Gabby’s role model is her older brother Jacob, and when she grows up she would like to be a rock star.

John is in first grade at A.J. Schmidt Elementary where he likes physical education and Mrs. Zeffiro is his favorite teacher. His absolute favorite spot in the Club is the gym where “basketball knock-out” is his favorite active game. John is extremely even-keeled and always very pleasant. He listens to staff and follows all the Club rules. Even though John is on the quiet side, he gets along with all other members and is very well-liked. In his free time, John likes to play outside, especially football. He is a big fan of reading Minecraft books, and someday would like to be a police officer! John likes listening to rock and roll music and his role model is basketball all-star LeBron James.

Lucie Scarpine is the Club’s Student of the Month. Lucie is very diligent in completing school work in the Power Hour (homework) room each day that she attends the Club. She is very responsible in that regard and her hard work shows. Lucie still manages to carve out time to play in her other favorite rooms too including the gym, where she is a big fan of the “basketball knock-out” game. Away from the Club she likes to shoot hoops, or play with her family and friends who she loves very much! Lucie attends J.T. Waugh Elementary where Mrs. Amoia is her favorite teacher, she is in third grade, and she loves ELA class. Lucie likes country music and her favorite song out right now is “Die A Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett. She loves reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, her role model is U.S. women’s soccer player Alex Morgan, and when she grows up she would like to be a doctor, dentist, or professional soccer player.

Our Junior Staff of the Month is Rachel Schaner, a sixth grader at Lake Shore Middle School. Junior Staff work the Snack Shack and assist Club staff with chores and running activities. Though she just joined the Club recently, our staff immediately recognized Rachel as a perfect Jr. Staff candidate due to her extremely helpful nature. Rachel’s desire to please and assist others simply for the satisfaction of helping is what sets her apart, and it’s no surprise that helping around the Club is her favorite thing to do while she’s here. She constantly seeks opportunities to lighten the load for the staff and other members. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Quiter and she says math is her class of choice. In her free time, Rachel enjoys playing soccer and listening to country music, especially Carrie Underwood. Rachel’s role models are her siblings, Corey and Tammy, and when she gets older she would like to become a veterinarian.

Carrier Center Students Take Top Honors at Annual Computer Science Competition

Students from the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB) Carrier Educational Center recently traveled to SUNY Fredonia to compete in the 13th Annual Fredonia State Computer Science Competition. They participated in contests in computer programming, electronic spreadsheets, web programming, and a quiz bowl contest going head to head with students from Chautauqua Lake, Dunkirk, Fredonia, and Gowanda.

Christian Kortum (Lake Shore) and Justin Miller (Silver Creek) won the web design contest fresh off their second place finish in the same category at the New York State SkillsUSA Conference in Syracuse, New York. This competition in Fredonia involved designing a professional web page and coding a page using the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Their work was judged based upon appearance and functionality. The contest was sponsored by the Fredonia State Department of Computer Science.

“Christian and Justin are exceptionally talented individuals, that’s for certain,” commented Greg Cole, IT/CS instructor at the Carrier Center. “The hard work they show in class continues to be put on display in contests like this one at Fredonia. They have very bright futures ahead of them.”

The Carrier Educational Center offers seven two-year CTE programs that allow high school juniors and seniors to gain experience and technical knowledge in highly specialized fields while earning a Regents Diploma. Students who complete program requirements receive a Technical Endorsement on their diplomas and are prepared to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation or pursue more advanced levels of study at post-secondary educational institutions.

Plant species were picked as a continuation of what the village has along South Buffalo Street, like day lilies and honey locus in addition to boxwoods and dogwoods. Isalko was also careful to choose salt resistant plants.

From the flowers to the walkways, presenters made it clear they plan to make the square a seamless “ex-
