On Monday, May 25, 2015, Newcomb-Long Post 928 of the American Legion and the Evans Township Post 5798 Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold their annual MEMORIAL DAY PARADE and SERVICE in the Village of Angola. Line up for the parade will be at the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street at 9:30 AM. The Parade will start at 10:00 AM. We will march to the Forest Avenue Cemetery for special services and then back to the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street. We invite Gold Star Mothers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Firefighters, all organizations, Public Officials and all Veterans from all wars to join us for this important parade and service. We also encourage decorated bikes, etc.

Guest Speak at J.T. Waugh

The fourth grade students at J. T. Waugh hosted a guest speaker to culminate Career Month. Mr. Ron Friend a father of one of the fourth grade students came in to speak about his job. He works for Gernatt’s. He discussed with the students how Math, Science, ELA and Social Studies fit in his job. Christian Laettner Basketball Academy donates to boys basketball club.

AJ Schmidt Elementary, located in Angola, NY, is pleased to announce the partnership between the Christian Laettner Basketball Academy and the AJ Schmidt Boys Basketball Club. The inaugural AJ Schmidt Boys Basketball Club is sponsored by Angola’s own Olympic Gold Medal Winner and back-to-back NCAA Champion, Christian Laettner. The Christian Laettner Basketball Academy has generously donated 4 brand new basketballs to get the program off to a running start. Additionally, Mr. Laettner contributed CLBA tee shirts to all of the boys.

The basketball club is instructed by 5th Grade teacher Mr. Adams and is open to all 5th Grade boys at AJ Schmidt.

The morning practice sessions include running, conditioning, passing and dribbling drills, instruction and scrimmaging. After burning some calories, the boys end their practice with water and a healthy snack. The club promotes fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship and makes a hometo-school connection through the use of entrance tickets.

These tickets gain admittance to each session and are signed by both parent and homeroom teacher under the condition that the student has shown good character traits.

The Christian Laettner Summer Basketball Camp is coming to Buffalo, NY and will be held from July 13-15.

Surprise Visitor Makes an Impact at AJS

Students at AJ Schmidt had a very special visitor on April 20 with an important message for students.

Buffalo Bills Running Pack Fred Jackson surprised students at AJ Schmidt Elementary School when he spoke during a student assembly.

Fred Jackson’s message was loud and clear, that good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are needed to be on top of your game. He discussed the NFL’s PLAY 60, which is the National Football League's campaign to encourage kids to be active for 60 minutes a day in order to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity. He told our students that running, playing chase, running around the couch during TV commercials and DANCING all are forms of exercise. He spoke of his 4 children and what they do as a family to keep Play 60 alive at their house. Students then had the opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Jackson. Upon, leaving Mr. Jackson complimented the students on being such a great audience and left each student with a gift, an autographed photo. Thank you to FRED JACKSON! This was a day to remember for each and every child (and adult).
