Tara is a pretty and friendly 2-year-old blue-eyed, white female. She is seeking a home as an only cat.

When someone asks me why our school is special I tell them the story of Mr. Franz. When he worked at our school -Mr. Franz Stadler, known to Southtowns as "Mr. Franz" was always the first person you would see as you arrived at school. He would greet you in front of the school with a smile and a "good morning" as he opened the door. He has two grandchildren who attend Southtowns Catholic. After working at the school for many, many years, Mr. Franz decided to retire. That was in 2011. He was greatly missed until one very sad day, December 15, 2012. This was the day after the tragic events took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. That day Mr. Franz returned to take his post at the doors of the school, and this time he was joined by another man who also had grandchildren in the school, James Trembath.

When asked why he was back Mr. Franz simply said "I need to know our children are safe." Rain, sleet, snow, -10 degrees or in the sunshine the so called grandpa guards have been standing at the doors of the school welcoming every student and parent with a smile and a "good morning." After the last bus drops off the children they make sure the doors of the school are locked and everyone is safely inside before quietly going home. Mr. Franz is a shining example of all who work at Southtowns Catholic School. Like him our number one priority is the children.

Girl Scout Troop 30166 News

Girl Scout Troop 30166 participated in Operation Christmas Child this year. They were able to collect enough items to donate 15 boxes for children in need around the world.

Operation Christmas Child distributes gifts to more than 100 countries and territories. The girls were thankful and excited to be part of such a rewarding experience. Pictured is the girl scout troop with their boxes they donated.

Residents Beware!

Beware of a group of people that are very negative to the growth and progress of our Town (Brant). These individuals like to spread untruths to propagate and foster their personal agendas of deceit and selfishness.

Remember, over my terms of office these past 10 years the town has prospered, despite these nay sayers’ actions to hinder our achievements. They questioned the free solar installment on our highway garage which has saved thousands of dollars. We beautified our Memorial Park and expanded and placed a playground at our town park. We renovated our Sr. / Community & Recreation buildings to name just a few achievements.

A great addition to our town was the purchase and renovation of the closed elementary school into our new town hall which cost $550,000 and it is completely paid off in 5 years. The nay sayers were against this project because they felt it was too much money and the upkeep would raise taxes. Must I remind everyone that our Town Taxes have gone down every single year for 9 straight years and we have not realized a problem with the upkeep.

One of the major projects that I worked on for 7 years was to bring public water to our community; unfortunately the Nay Sayers won out and stopped the program leaving many residents without pure water and the town lost 3 businesses that would have made Brant their home. This would have increased our tax base and employed 100 people if we would have had public water.

My dear friends don’t let this happen again. The purchase of the Lake Front Property will be a great asset for our community now and for future generations to enjoy. Don’t let these individuals rob the only opportunity for our children and grandchildren to enjoy a town beach and pristine natural park.

The costs to the tax payers will be taken out of the taxes you already pay and there will not be an increase. The town has 1478 taxable properties and the cost is $650,000 over 20 years. The cost to the tax payer will be $21.99 per year, less than a steak dinner for 2. PLEASE VOTE YES February 8, 2016 at the Sr. / Community Center. I have never let you down, because I do care about you.

Southtowns Catholic School Bomb Squad Robot Demonstration

The Erie County Sheriff's Bomb Squad held a Robot Demonstration at Southtowns Catholic School on January 11th in the school gym. All students from Preschool to Grade 8 sat and listened to Bomb Technicians, Lieutenant James Welch and Deputy Neal Held, talk about the robots and what they use them for. They also explained how Math, Science and Physics play an important part in what they do. After the school assembly was over, the Southtowns Catholic School Robotics Club was able to drive the robots around the gym. The Bomb Squad consists of 6 FBI certified Hazardous Device Technicians trained in; basic and advanced IED electronics, advanced x-ray interpretation and diagnostics, improvised and homemade explosive remediation, Advanced Hand Entry Techniques, PBIED/ VBIED render safe and countermeasures, explosive forced entry, post-blast investigation, and complete integration with the ECSO SWAT team. Area SUNY Potsdam Students Named to President's List

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 908 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Fall 2015 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by President Kristin G. Esterberg.

The students included Bridget Orth of Lakeview, NY, whose major is Psychology and Shelby Sipos of Lake View, NY, whose major is Music Education.

To achieve the honor of being on the President's List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Students Celebrate the New Year

SS. Peter & Paul School, located in Hamburg, recently held a celebration for the New Year. Our Parochial Vicar Rev. John Adams, Principal Sr. Marilynn Ann Dudek and Assistant Principal Diane Liptak went around to all of the classrooms to celebrate the Epiphany. They spoke to the children about how Christians celebrate the Wise Men (the Magi) coming to the home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph at Epiphany. The tradition is to pray for a blessing on our homes using the symbol 20+C+M+B+16. The breakdown of the equation is that 20 and 16 are the year, C (K), M, B being the initials of the traditional names of the wise men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, they can also stand for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, the Latin words meaning, May Christ bless this home. Monsignor John W. Zeitler

Monsignor John W. Zeitler, retired pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Lake View, now St. John Paul II Parish, died Monday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a short illness. He was 83. Born in Buffalo, he was a 1950 graduate of Bennett High School, where he was an all-city athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Michigan State University, where he was captain of the NCAA champion baseball team. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers and played shortstop in 1954 and 1956 on Tigers farm teams in Jamestown, Valdosta, Ga.; Durham, N.C.; and Palatka, Fla. He also served in the Army during the Korean War. He went on to earn a master’s degree in theology from Collegium Canisianum in Innsbruck, Austria; and a master’s degree in education from Canisius College. After serving as pastor at St. Joseph Parish is Bliss in 1964-65, he became an instructor at Notre Dame High School in Batavia, and went on to serve as coach, athletic director and assistant principal there. In 1978, he was named principal of TurnerCarroll High School in Buffalo. He went on to become parochial vicar for Blessed Sacrament Church in 1980, then served as campus minister at the University at Buffalo Newman Center from 1984 to 1990, when he was assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He retired in 2010. Monsignor Zeitler was dean of students at Collegium Canisianum, a member of the St. Francis High School Board of Education and took part

in the Diocesan mentoring program. He sang with the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and the Bavarian Singers Chorus. He also was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus in Hamburg and the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Holy Name Society. He was inducted into the Bennett High School Sports Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, as well as the Notre Dame High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Harvard Cup Hall of Fame. He received the Christ the King Seminary Cure de Ars Award in 2005, the St. Francis High School Father Justi Award, the Immaculata Academy Mater Christi Award and the Diocesan Youth Department’s Father Nelson Baker Award .Beloved son of late John B., late Mary (nee Schwabl), and late Bertha (nee Butz) Zeitler; devoted brother of Mary Ann (late Murray) Bourdon and late Jeanne Zeitler; cherished uncle of Mark (Marie) Bourdon of Mt. Deana M. King, 62, of Cedar Street, Forestville, formerly of Farnham, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Mercy Hospital, Buffalo, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Syracuse on February 1, 1953, the daughter of the late Kenneth John Paul and Vienna May (MacDougall) Derucher.

She was a devoted wife who loved her family, grandchildren and wildlife animals. Mrs. King also enjoyed doing embroidery and watching hummingbirds.

Survivors include a son, Jerry (Jackie) King, of Forestville; a daughter, Grace (Jim) Frederickson, of Sweet Water, TX; one sister and four brothers.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Cody and Tyler King, Hunter and Cheyenne Brockman, Jessica, Erick and Jamie Frederickson; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, David D. King, whom she married on December 31, 1971 in Gowanda and who died January 29, 2015; and by her sister.
