The following excerpt is from “Brant Volunteer Fire Company #1, Inc,. A look at the past 50 years by Herman J. Ciminesi” as published in our 175 year history book of Brant, N.Y.: “In 1966 we purchased our second new truck, a 750 GPM pumper with a 3000 gallon tank at a cost of $33,000 with the help of a loan from Evans National Bank.” Looking over the new Brant fire truck on December 1st, 1966 are (L-R) First two men are unknown, Chief Pete Pero, Charlie Minor and David Pero Sr.

Robert W Captain of Scio and Angola NY, passed away December 15, 2019 in Buffalo Veterans Hospital, he was 75. Beloved Soul mate, loving companion and partner of Gail Kilburn. He was born in Buffalo March 4, 1944 to the late James and Olive (Bergum) Captain. Bob served in the Army from March of 1970 to October 1971 stationed at Chu Lai, Viet Nam. After an Honorable discharge he returned to Buffalo then eventually settled in Scio NY where he pursued his passion of stock car racing then customizing his 1955 Dodge Royal Lancer, and going to many car shows. He could always be found at any local car shows visiting with many old friends or making new ones. He was a Lifetime Member of the Cuba VFW Post 2721, and a member of ACVVO Wellsville NY. Bob graduated from SUNY Alfred in 1996 with a degree in Mechanical Tool Engineering. He was a joker and a big kid on holidays. His favorites being 4th of July and Christmas. One of his more favorite pastimes was the Irving Casino. Bob is survived by his sons Robert (Laurie) Captain of Darien, Alexander Captain of Scio, and Bly Captain of Great Falls, Montana. Grandfather of Heather, Tanya, Holly and Cody, also survived by 4 great grandchildren, 2 nephews and 1 niece. He was predeceased by his brother James K Captain. He was adopted father to Jackie and Jill Kilburn as well as Tennille and Trysha Underwood. This making him the adopted “Papa Bob” to 11 more grandchildren. There was a special bond between Papa and “His Jerek”. There will be a Memorial service with Military Honors in the spring, at date, time and place to be announced. It means more than you know at this difficult time. Mom was close to her 99th birthday when she passed. She had a great life and will be greatly missed.

Celebrate St. Nicholas Day
Students in Spanish 5 portrayed characters from St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6. Throughout Europe and the Americas, St. Nicholas comes to visit the good boys and girls to give toys, candies and oranges in shoes that are left out overnight. He does not come down the chimney and he comes with a donkey, not reindeer. In France, a menacing character named Pere Fouettard comes to spank bad children. In Germany, a scary faced person named Krampus carries away misbehaving kids. Of course, at Lake Shore High School there were all good children who received candy! These characters were students from Senora Kowal’s level 5 Spanish class.
