Brant I’s School Christmas play of 2002 “The Nutcracker”. Photos clockwise, beginning top left: Sugar Plum Fairies, Main Characters (L-R) Jamie Walker, Michael Muffoletto, Ashley Barker and Ryan Shannon, Candy Flutes with the Arabian Dancers in the background and The Wooden Soldiers.

The Brant I School had a wonderful faculty who, in addition to providing an excellent education in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, would each year put together some amazing Christmas plays! In 2002 the Brant I School play was “The Nutcracker” (adapted from the “Nutcracker Suite” by Peter Tchaikovsky). Each child in the school participates in some way or form. Sue H. Ross, once again outdid herself as Director and the main cast members were: Nutcracker played by Jamie Walker, Fritz played by Michael Muffoletto, Marie played by Ashley Barker and the Judge played by Ryan Shannon. Mrs. Zeffiro’s first graders designed the program cover. Brant I teachers; Mrs. Grennell, Mrs. Zeffiro, Mrs. Danial, Mrs. Free and school secretary Sandy Fininzio assisted in countless ways to keep the production on track as did Helen Butler Accompanist who was also a Student Teacher from Fredonia State.
We all recognize how much work goes into a production of this kind: set designs, choreography, costumes, props, makeup, scripts, music, songs, timing, practice, practice and more practice to be sure to get it just right! The trick is to accomplish the work, yet keep it fun! The entire school, faculty, staff, parents and community were involved including the Brant Fire Department who allowed use of their fire hall for practices and for the final production. In fact, Sonny Catalano and the Brant Fire Department received a very special “shout out” in the program as did Mr. Keipper, Mr. Pericak, Mrs. Bellanti, Claddaugh Personnel and Residents and Tim Fitzgerald for their contribution in the play’s success.
The performance was held on December 2, 2002 at the Brant Fire Hall. The fifth grade band and orchestra, under the direction of Ms. Lynn Streeter, opened the program by providing music for listening and sing-a-longs which included favorites such as “JINGLE BELLS”, “UP ON THE HOUSETOP” and of course “WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS”.

The current pandemic has affected many Americans including some residing in our own Town. Loss of jobs and income, loss of housing and even loss of life are all by-products of this horrible sickness. As a result, Most Precious Blood Church’s yearly warm clothing drive Project Keep Evans Warm will include a food and paper drive. The goal of this effort will be to assist Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) to meet the increasing demand. All collections will be turned over to OGN for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans free of charge. For warm clothing we will accept winter coats, gloves, boots and hats in all sizes, colors and styles. Children’s sizes are very popular. We ask that any clothing donated be clean. For food we will accept dry and canned with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food is in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper so these will be collected also. This is the Project’s 7th year and each year requests for assistance far exceeds what can be collected. This year the pandemic will certainly make matters challenging. This can easily be a community effort and we encourage all work places, churches, volunteer fire departments and schools to participate and directly work with OGN or you can call 481-4480 or 507-6703 to arrange for pick-up of any items donated. Leave a message if no answer. We need all the help we can get. Please help to Keep Evans Warm and Fed during this most difficult time.

In previous years, at the Evans Garden Club Annual Christmas Dinner, members brought personal hygiene items to be be donated to Angola Operation Good Neighbor (OGN). This year COVID cancelled the Christmas dinner, so . . . .
The Evans Garden Club Board headed up a “Drop Off or Pick Up for OGN.” Club members could either drop off personal hygiene items at any of the Board Member homes, or ask for their donation to be picked up.
As you can see, it was tremendously successful (pictured is the EGC Board: Kathy Connolly, Candace Mayer, Nancy Ward, Miriam Oster, Marge Novara)

Welcome Sprague of Farnham, N.Y.; Finds a creative use of horsepower in the 1800’s

Welcome Sprague, the inventor from Farnham N.Y., was born in 1833. In 1892, after years of hard work and ingenuity, he sold out his business and good will to the Sprague Mfg. Co., (later Sprague Canning Machinery Co.) The information of the early life of Welcome Sprague was found in an issue of “CANNERY NOTES” brochure issued by the Sprague Canning Machinery Company in July, 1919. John C. McIntyre (Farnham businessman and the Farnham postmaster of 1892) began the story with these comments: “Today the name Sprague stands for the most practical LABOR SAVING machinery known to the canning trade.” John C. McIntyre continues the tale of his ingenious neighbor Welcome Sprague: “In time the 16 ft. x 20 ft. shop with its foot-power lathe became too small for his business and he built a building 26 ft. by 30 ft. and installed a small power lathe, but as he could not afford to buy an engine and boiler he rigged up a sweep* power back of his shop and his old horse following in a circle, day after day, furnished the power. It was dull uninteresting work for the old horse and the horse would often forget the urgency of his task and loaf on the job.
In order to speed up the revolutions of his machinery it was necessary for Mr. Sprague to go to the back door of the shop and throw a few clods [of dirt] at the old horse who would respond quickly but would soon forget and lapse back into a slow pace. This was trying to Mr. Sprague and he obliged to devise other means to keep in closer and more constant touch with the old horse. This he accomplished, even making it a very personal touch. He arranged a whip on the sweep behind the old horse and attached a cord to it which led into the shop to a point near the lathe and by pulling the cord the old horse would receive a very unexpected whack on his back without seeing the shop door open. This was very mystifying to the old horse but it produced the desired results. Later Mr. Sprague was able to buy and install a small steam boiler and engine in the shop and the old horse was retired on a pension.”
This story seems like good material for an old-time cartoon episode! We can just imagine the expression on the horses face as he wondered from where the “getmoving-whack” originated! A clever man - that Welcome Sprague - seems to be quite the character!

A few years after selling his company, Welcome Sprague lived with his daughter Ella May and her husband Dr. Thomas Hall Johnston in Brant, N.Y near the village of Farnham border. Welcome died in July of 1894 and was laid to rest in the Brant Cemetery on Brant-North Collins Road. (Note: A *“sweep” is a turnstile setup to keep the horse moving in a circle.)
