Town of Evans Residents, Thanks for checking in for another Bi-Weekly Brief! Here is an update on our Senior Center: We are currently working on circulating air through the building with an improved HVAC system to keep our Seniors safe. We anticipate the opening of the location before the New Year for meal programs and activities to resume. The digital sign out front of the center will be completed as soon as essential parts are delivered to finish the electronic panel. We have experienced delays, like many other towns, to receive necessary equipment. This sign will be an essential way to keep our residents and guests informed on events and news in the Town. Construction has continued on the corner of the wall at Sturgeon Point Marina. This is an important project in our Town as we continue to preserve the Marina. Part of this project has been reimbursed by FEMA. I am sure many residents have noticed that we have broken ground on the water tower project. The 1.5-million-gallon water tower is being constructed in part with Erie County at the future Ag Park site. Surveyors have been working on site on Eden Evans Center road and the foundations are being put in place. I wish all our residents a very happy and safe Thanksgiving. The Green and White Newspaper Staff - 1941 (80 years ago)!
While reading through the Angola High School yearbook of 1941, we discovered this group photo of “The Green and White” newspaper team. The responsibilities and names of the “The Green and White” newspaper staff student staff picof the Angola High school in 1941 tured are: Editor in Chief - Mary Leone. Faculty Advisor - Mrs. Genevieve Ehmke. Business Manager - Dorothy Rodak. Circulating Manager - Louise Sack. Literary - Ida Catalino, Carolyn Dash, Virginia Gugino, James Close. Sports - Jane Heath, Helen Ziembec, Eilleen Kelley. Art - Gwendolyn Woodman, Louise Werner, Shirley Miller, Mary Ann Hepfinger. General Reporters - Peggy Boyer, Marjorie Schnell, Ruth Bogardus, Laura DiSarno. Typists - Grace Sack, Josephine Paternostro, Concetta Muscarella, Josephine Leone, Dorothy Rodak, Betty Loebs, Jean LoGrasso. Mimeograph - Howard Gouyd, Gordon Zoeller and Robert Heimburg. At that time, the High School was located in what is known today as the John T. Waugh School, on High Street in the village. Along with the photo, the following description was provided: “The Green and White, our school paper is published by an enthusiastic staff headed by an annually elected editor in chief.” Reading further we learn that the newspaper included general content such as sports, humor, cartoons and grade activities. We need to recall that EIGHTY years ago, computers with options of spell check, delete, add and copy/paste were not yet invented! Creating a newspaper involved face to face interviews and conversations, taking notes, creating and writing articles and typing on a manual typewriter. Spell checkers were real live people and dictionaries, encyclopedias and a thesaurus were the equivalent of the “online” resources of today. Once the editor approved, multiple copies were printed on a mimeograph machine. The finished newspaper was then distributed and - we are sure - enjoyed by many!
