On behalf of the family, we would like to thank everyone for the tremendous amount of love and and acts of kindness we received during a very difficult time. Bob was a life-long Angola resident, an Eagle Scout, a proud graduate of Lake Shore Senior High School and a tireless community leader and volunteer. He was an excellent and generous woodworker, gifting most things to people both inside and outside his much-loved extended family. He was also a computer geek before the word was probably invented. Right up to almost the end, he was crafting complicated spreadsheets and graphs detailing golf scores, club rosters and the like that most likely only he could understand. He was a master tinkerer and looked at every broken appliance, lamp or coffee pot as a personal challenge. And his “outstanding” sense of humor will be missed.

A special thanks to Father John at Most Precious Blood Church for a lovely service, Maria Szczepanik for her beautiful music and John Kaczor at John Kaczor Funeral Home for his grace.

Lynn Walter’s Photographer’s Tent at WWI National Guard Encampment, Farnham, N.Y.

This photo, developed from a glass plate negative, is one of the many photos donated to the historical society by Jeanne Treat. The photographer, Lynn Walters lived in the town of Brant on the Milestrip and Hammond Roads. He set up a tent at the WWI military National Guard Encampment (we believe it was Camp Hughes), Farnham, N.Y. about 1913 or 1916. Pictured in the photo are: (L-R) Unknown man, Ruth (Walters) Miller, Henry Miller and Lynn Miller who is seated on the Indian Motorcycle. Ruth is the sister of Lynn Walters. Lynn Miller is the son of Ruth and Henry Miller.

Fred W. Brinkman, who was a life-long resident of Farnham, N.Y. wrote the following for our 1964 town of Brant history book: “In 1916, Brant was directly involved in the war when a base for training National Guard troops was built on the shore of Lake Erie, principally on property belonging to the Doyle sisters. Many uniformed troops were discharged from the train station in Farnham and marched in full uniform to this camp.”

The “Doyle property” mentioned by Mr. Brinkman, was previously owned by J. Kelderhouse and according to the 1909 New Century Atlas of Erie County, the J. Kelderhouse land was located in lots 89 & 87 and consisted of approximately 112 acres, bordered on the West by Lake Erie and the North by the Town of Evans.

Because of Jeanne Treat’s generosity, the historical society has a fine photo collection of this military encampment. Some of the photos depict the men at their campsite and in other photos they are on horseback …and all we believe were taken by town of Brant resident and photographer - Lynn Walters.

The Holy Cross Church and schoolhouse on Church Street, Farnham, N.Y. (pre 1930)

From the Holy Cross Lutheran Church 100 year anniversary booklet published in 1964, we found the following comment: “Many people will recall with fond memories the little schoolhouse in which they received their early Christian education. Old pictures show the schoolhouse located north of the church.”

We happened to come across just such a photo in our archives! We enlarged it so we can better see the little school building next to the older wooden church. The wooden church stood on the lot until it was destroyed by fire on August 18, 1930. Less than a year later the Holy Cross Lutheran church was rebuilt as a brick structure. The new church building was dedicated on April 19, 1931 and is still in use today.

The Christian education classes continued through the years and in the same mentioned anniversary book the Holy Cross Sunday School teachers in the year of 1964 were listed as: Nursery: Mrs. LaVerne Heller. Kindergarten: Mrs. Donald Carbeck and Mrs. Ira Dean Bittinger. Primary grades were taught by Mrs. Kenneth Ditcher, Mrs. William Russell, Mrs. Sidney Smith and Miss Diana Voss. Junior classes were taught by Mrs. Earl Beuzenburg, Miss Nadine Grunder, Mr. Richard Hoisington, Mrs. Richard Hoisington, Mr. Robert Russell and Pastor Seibert. Intermediate class teachers were listed as Mr. Donald Carbeck, Mrs. Charles Ray, Mr. Daniel Thomas and Mrs. Charles Wasmund. Weekday Church School Teachers were: Grades 1 & 2 - Mrs. J. A Historical Visit

The Brant-Farnham Historical Society had a special visitor at their meeting held on October 17, 2018. Eighty-four years young Joseph Leone came back to his hometown to reminisce with us about his life in Brant and Farnham, N.Y.

On an earlier September visit with his daughter-in-law Jennifer to the Brant town hall, he was surprised, but thrilled to discover his siblings in some of the school photos which line the hallways. That visit sparked a re-interest in Joe’s early Brant days, so both Joe and Jennifer decided to attend one of our meetings and we are so glad that they did.

During their visit, photos and stories were shared with us of Joe’s family. His brother was Anthony and his sisters were Antoinette, Lena and Irene. Joe was the youngest. He also brought along photos of his parents who grew up and were married in the town of Brant. He even had their original wedding invitation! His mom was Della (Christopher) Leone and his dad was Pasquale Leone. Joe told us that he attended Brant Schools #1 and #2 and also the Farnham Schools (wooden and new), so of course we made sure that he signed the corresponding school photo mats. After another visit to the hallway photos, we believe that his dad Pasquale may be in an early 1910 school photo. We found a photo of Joe in the 1964 Brant history book. He was on the “Dinner and Tickets” committee for the 125th anniversary year for the town of Brant – and he recalls driving a Ford convertible in one of the Brant strawberry festival parades! It was a fun evening and the time just flew by. They promised to visit again! In attendance at this meeting were Joe Leone, Joe’s daughter-in-law Jennifer Leone, Mrs. Joyce Ellis, Dolly Huffnagle and Patty Friend. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society
