The Village of Angola Board of Trustees, hereby declares Wednesday, October 31st 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM as the day for celebration of Halloween for Tricks and Treats.
Supervisor Hosler moved and Councilwoman Macko seconded, WHEREAS, the Evans Town Board declares the celebration of Halloween in the Town of Evans for Wednesday, October 31, 2018; and WHEREAS, the citizens of the Town of Evans are hereby requested to leave an outside light on during the hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm to insure the safety of the children in their Trick or Treat travels and show willingness to participate in the celebration of Halloween with the children of our community. From the Old Photo Album The Cub Scout Pack 398, sponsored by the Farnham Fire Dept. is shown lining up at the corner of Commercial and Perry Streets, Farnham, N.Y. for a Memorial Day Parade. Ed Davis at the far left is Cub Master & Founder of the pack. David Berns the Asst. Cub Master is shown inspecting the line formations. The pack’s mascot, Kevin Davis is the young man in front of the banner. St. Anthony’s Church and steeple can be seen at the far right of the photo. This particular photo was included in the box of items donated to the historical society by Janet (Walker) Reger (and it had the names on the back! YAY!) However, we cannot verify the year the photo was taken. The historical society room, located in the Brant Town Hall, has four Farnham/Brant cub scout and girl scout photo albums from the 1970’s and 1980’s available for viewing and reminiscing. 1964 was the 8th Anniversary of the Brant Strawberry Festival as well as the 125th Anniversary of the Town of Brant. For each of the 15 years it was in existence, the 3 day strawberry festival was an amazing event, packed with daily parades and a tremendous amount of activities to keep the festival goers occupied and interested. It was a huge undertaking for our small town! This was accomplished by a multitude of volunteers; people and committees combined with intense participation, planning, hard work and devotion of time by all those involved. Many “Brantonians” (to quote Angela Pero) worked together tirelessly to ensure the success of the strawberry festivals and in doing so created beloved and happy memories that remain to this day. Take a glance at the photo and note the number of volunteers on the executive committee - and these are not even all the people who played a role! What organization in the year of 2018 wouldn’t welcome this kind of participation and involvement in their own groups and committees? The Angola High School was located in the building that is today recognized as the John T. Waugh Elementary School on High Street, in the village of Angola, N.Y. We discovered information for this article while reading over a year’s worth of the one-time local newspaper known as “The Angola Record”. This weekly newspaper was published each Thursday at the RECORD building which was located at 24 North Main Street, Angola, N.Y., Telephone 58. The subscription cost was $.05 cents per copy, $2 for a full year, $1.10 for 6 months or $.60 cents for 3 months. W. M. Landon and Son were editors and publishers. In the weekly editions for the years 1928 and 1929, our eyes scanned for and stopped at the section entitled ANGOLA HISTORY (which by the way was not only about Angola)! In 1928 and 1929, the history highlights were listed as “5 years ago thru 45 years ago”. Today, in 2018, we would record these as “95 years ago thru 135 years ago”! The history section included various tidbits of information such as: “In 1884 - 45 years ago - Aaron Reeves caught 16 skunks in one hole” and “in 1894 - 35 years ago - the Fenton Post Office was established.” [The Fenton Post Office was located on Milestrip Road in Brant, N.Y.] From this same history section, we chose to focus on the Angola High School information to coincide with our photo of the high school. · 1888 - The Angola High School held its fifth commencement with three graduates. · 1893 - The Angola High School graduated six students. · 1898 - There were five graduates from the A.H.S. · 1903 - Seven graduated from A.H.S. · 1908 - A class of five graduate from A.H.S. · 1913 - Sixteen graduate from A.H.S. · 1923 - Twelve graduate from A.H.S. · 1928 - The 44th commencement of the Angola High School with fourteen graduates. [Walden Krull and Eleanor
Lehley, both from Brant were two of the fourteen.]
The Evans Historical Society has more than a few giantsize books of “The Angola Record” available for review and reading pleasure. A few years back, they donated their duplicate books to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society and we are so pleased that they decided to share them with us!
